iTunes controller?

I'm not sure if I was searching for the right key words, but I was planning on building a desk with all of my computer components built into it, save the monitor keyboard and mouse, and I wanted to make like a little controller for iTunes that controlls random, repeat, next song, previous song, pause, and play. Like, would it be possible to take apart a spare remote control and use the circuitry and buttons from that to do it? Is it even possible? Also, this will be on a Windows 7 PC

iTunes to Arduino

I was wondering if someone could help me find a way to display the name of a song currently playing on itunes with a scrolling 24x6 led display. im thinking of using the display from this instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Make-a-24X6-LED-matrix/ it is coded to accept serial text input and display it on the matrix. my question is: how can i retrieve currently playing song's name and output it via serial to the arduino. btw, i know oe or two people have asked this before, but they were on macs and used AppleScript, which i cannot use because im on a windows pc

iTunes suxxors

I'm just going through my music now and I removed my entire library so I could go through my music and delete duplicates and whatnot without iTunes shitting itself because it's missing files. For this example I'll use my Tupac Shakur discography as an example. I had downloaded two Tupac discography's to go through and mix and match them (Example: Albums I don't have, or one discography has a high bit rate version of an album then what's in my music folder). That all done and said, which took a while, I dragged just my Tupac folder (updated one) into the itunes window, it says I have 1.83 gigs of music (remember just the Tupac stuff) yet the finder says the folder weighs 2gigs exactly. There's quite a difference between 1.83 gigs and 2, roughly 240mb or more. Anyone else notice this problem with their library, another reason to hate apple more? All together my music folder reads 9.96gb but in itunes it only comes to like 6.52 something? I call fuckin shenanigans, anyone else? Grab your pitchforks...

I need an iTunes-style database solution for all my videos...

Hello, Newby to Instructables, read about it in the newspaper today.  Looking forward to some help/input on this project of mine... I have a huge (and growing) volume of video media. pushing 5 TB, and I'll be buying another 2 TB drive before autumn.  Now, having all this media at my fingertips on my PC without having to rifle through my DVD library is great, but it's only half the battle.  What I really want to be able to do is search through all my videos and TV episodes with the same ease that I go through my music library in iTunes. So, what I need is some way to list each video, and list each "tag" that applies to that video (SciFi, TV, comedy, romance, etc., you get the picture).  So, Excel serves well enough for that part, though I'm not married to it as a long-term solution. And, Excel fails completely as a searchable database, where I can just type in, say, "SciFi" and get the database to present me with every single Start Trek, Stargate, B5, etc. TV episode and movie that I own. So, can anyone suggest a program that would already be able to do this for me? iTunes itself isn't a solution, because although I could  make a plethora of empty MP3 files, import them into iTunes, and assign all the metadata I want to them, there wouldn't be anyway to click on the empty MP3 entry and have the movie/video pop up and play. Also, my videos are either direct DVD rips or mkv files, so I can't import either of those into iTunes either. Thanks in advance!

Anyone know of some professional DSP Software for mac os x?

Does anyone know of really good dsp software for mac os x? I tried iwow plugin for itunes but it added a nasty crackly sound in the music, almost like it was lower bit rate (Resampleing it?). I've got a nice stereo, a decent mac, and good cables, so I wanna be able to tweak my sound. Any ideas? -Punk

Delete those unwanted iTunes songs from your computer

Please keep ion mind I am a complete newbe with Perl. I keyed in the Perl script(?) to do exactly what the title says. I down loaded and installed ActivePerl, Then downloaded EnginSite Lite Perl editor. When I click on the "Run" and "Out Put Warning" I am getting errors on the print statements: example - print("-I-: XML file: $xml_file\n"; -. I believe I have done a careful character by character comparison and found my typing bugs. Could someone point out what I might be doing wrong. I am running this on a PC not a MAC, but I don't think that is an issue at this point. I have not tried compling yet. Many many thanks in advance.

Itunes is stuck?

Apparently my itunes refuses to work for me anymore and I cannot access my 20 gig music collection. It opens for like 5 seconds and then just locks the entire computer up and I have to force it off. Oh yeah and it's a ibook G4 has anyone had any similar problems?

Modify iTunes rating/advisory warning in mp3s on Mac?

I have searched and searched online for a solution and have found nothing that works.  I want to add & modify the CLEAN and EXPLICIT content advisory warning labels displayed in iTunes on mp3s using my Mac. Yes, I know I could just type in explicit or clean in the comments field using get info, but that does not work with the built in parental controls.  Also, I get a little OCD with my music and would much prefer to use the correct label since there is one. For anyone who says mp3 files cannot store this type of information, that is incorrect.  See the screenshot below for proof of the contrary.   I purchased the song below in the iTunes store but later converted it to mp3 so I could use the song on a device/program (can't remember which) that could not play the original file type.  The content advisory label was transferred to the mp3. Here are some proposed solutions I found online that do NOT work: - Atomic Parsley - Does not work with mp3s.  Yes, I could potentially convert my entire library to AAC and then use this but I do not want AAC files, I want mp3 files.  Mp3s are more compatible with other programs and devices.  I suppose I could also convert my entire library to AAC, adjust the content advisory warning labels, then convert the entire library back to mp3.  I do not want to do this, however, because of the potential to reduce the audio quality of almost every song I own.  - Lostify - This program is for mp4 files. - Atomic Parsley based programs - Again, they do not work with mp3s. I may be asking for a miracle here but if anyone knows how to do this, an Instructable would be much appreciated. On a somewhat irrelevant note, here is my take on the parental advisory warnings:  In an ideal iTunes world, these could be easily modified and protected by password so parents could make inappropriate songs not purchased on iTunes inaccessible to their children using the parental controls.  It seems ridiculous to me that this is not possible, as Apple knows that the majority of people do not have a library of songs 100% from the iTunes store.  Also some songs are mislabeled (oftentimes if one song on an album has an f-bomb, the entire album is marked explicit).

Mechanical Cover Flow

I was thinking of a project for a type of shelf for your CD jewel cases. It would be a way of presenting CD covers in a similar way to iTunes 7's cover flow. (see http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/aa/CoverFlow_Screenshot.png) You could mount the cases and have a slider to flip through your CDs. Anyone know how this could be achieved?

A new series started on CBC Radio this week, here in Canada. All of you should give this a listen. The link is to the shows home page for the first episode, but can be had through Itunes to receive it automatically. This first one concerns the "God Light" and what the inventor went through. iTouch not syncing?

*I don't have it with me now, but tomorrow I WILL!* One of the kids in my class has got a problem. Her first iTouch's screen broke (I know how to fix that), but her replacement iPod wont sync with her computer. Could this be because iTunes can't sync with 2 iPod's on its "list"? I just want to know of any fixes so I don't go stumbling along.

How To Get Music From an IPod (all models)

Here's how you do it. 1. Hook the iPod up to the computer. If iTunes pops up and asks you if you want to replace anything, say no. You can hit ctrl-shift-esc and go to processes, then close the iPodService.exe to get you more time. 2. Go to My Computer. It should list the iPod as whatever you named the iPod (like Joe's iPod). Click on the drive. 3. You should see some folders. If you don't see one named iPod_Control, go to the Tools option at the top of the window (its on the bar with File and Edit). Click on the "Folder Options" selection at the bottom. When that opens, click the View tab at the top, then scroll down the list and choose the "show hidden files and folders" button under the Hidden Files and Folders folder. The iPod_Control should show up. If not, go to the address bar and type it in. 4. Under iPod_Control, you should see a Music folder. From here, you can either copy the whole folder and paste it somewhere on the computer and put them in iTunes later, or you can find songs. If you do a search, you should be able to find songs by putting in what to search full under "word or phrase in file". If you want to put in music that will play in the iPod directly, you're going to have to go into one of the folders in the music folder (usually like f00 or f01 or something), find a file (usually with a random 4 letter name like MLKJ), take the song you want to play, rename it as the song you're replacing, then copy and paste it in there. Usually you want to reaname the song you're replacing first, then find it later. If you want to make sure you don't replace something you want, view the folder with details, right-click the top of the window in the bar that says "name" and check Author or Title. This will show what you're replacing. 5. If you want to put music on the iPod but don't want to have to lose anything, your best bet is to take the songs you want, put them in a folder on the iPod, and take them back to your home computer, add them to iTunes, then put them on your iPod. 6. To add songs to iTunes from a folder, go to File, click Add Folder, then find the folder you want and go. It automatically keeps the names and usually the album art with the songs. :B-Rad

Ipod Issue

Okay, I am having some weird issues with my Ipod Issue number one: My Ipod won't sync correcting. My plugged it into a different computer with Itunes installed, but it won't sync to it, even though it says, syncing or w/e. Why is this happening? (I put this in the forums because all my answers I submitted days ago still isn't on the list, so I figured this would be better)

Letter from the editor: Say Hello to eBooks!

Happy New Year to all! It's been an exciting time at Instructables HQ, with the release of over 60 new eBooks currently available in the iBooks store on iTunes! As many of you know, we've been furiously working on putting together some fantastic guides of projects that span the content of the website in order to share our work with an even broader audience. Many of your projects have been featured in these eBooks and you have already checked them out. For those of you who haven't, you can peruse the iTunes bookstore and download free previews of all of the books we publish by searching for Instructables within the iBooks App on iPads, iPods, or iPhones. If you don't have a device that natively reads EPUB files, you can read them on your computer using a free EPUB reader such as Calibre. Click here to get Amazing Cakes for the iPad or iPhone Lots of interesting questions and ideas have come up in the creation of these books. While we want to offer as much of our content for free as we can, it's also true that people tend to value objects more when there's a price tag attached. To test out this theory, we did add some nominal fees (between $0.99 and $2.99 USD) to some of the more niche titles we created – the rest of our books remain free on the iTunes market. However, all of our PRO members will soon be able to download every eBook we produce for free, and every author featured in one will receive a code to share with their friends and family as well. Some of the titles are available to the Nook audience, though their publishing restrictions were tighter than iTunes' (the Nook doesn't allow us to offer eBooks for free!), so we were limited to what we could share through that market. Now that we know more about their process, we'll be able to share more with them in the future! And we're still brainstorming the best way to bring these books to your Kindle (as much as I love my Kindle, I just don't like the way our guides look in e-ink). Of course, you can still upload pdfs of the Instructables you love to any portable reader you have. Click here to get Survival for the Nook We hope you're having a great new year, and that you're as excited as we are about this new venture!  Click here to check out all the rest of our new ebooks! All the best, Sarah

Linux, ubuntu, and the like

Ok, so I'm tired of my windows system. It is starting to get boring to look at AND VERY VERY CLUTTERED. I would like to switch to ubuntu, but I'm not sure if it will play my windows games that have a lot of code and/or are graphically intensive. I know it has dual boot, and the other thing, but idk if it will play AOE3, Risk, Itunes, Windows Media player, or any of the windows programs. One of the reasons I would like to switch to ubuntu is because they have a download just for media and music production, and me being a wanna be music superstar, that is what I want and/or need right now.

One Terabyte Ipod!

I want to take a regular 3.5" hard drive and make a franken- pod of sorts using an ipod. basically, replace an ipod's hard drive with a terabyte hard drive. its a basic concept i know it can be done  here is a link to one that has been done. but im surprised across the whole internet i could only find one or two... http://www.command-tab.com/2005/03/13/ipod-super/ i can get a new Western Digital terabyte hard drive here- this is an ebay link so i dont know if it will work very well... http://cgi.ebay.com/new-Western-Digital-1-terabyte-tb-WD-internal-3-5-hdd-/270666732766?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item3f04fe94de i know this franken-pod will be a bit of a brick, but im fine with that.  i plan on using this in my truck to play through the stereo, and having it portable for long trips/ other cars etc... QUESTIONS- -can it be done? -im sure the power from the ipod internal battery will be insufficient... what can i do about this? -when this franken-pod is wired up correctly, will it just be a matter of plugging it into itunes and formatting the drive? or do i need to use windows to format the drive to FAT32 or whatever the ipod drives are then letting itunes format it again and add the firmware? help me out please!

Youtube is horrible now

So, when I went to Youtube one day, I watched a Rockband video. And I'm like... okay, why did this person put different music on the video? Then I realized it was on most youtube videos. THEN, my favorite Youtube account was suspended. Why was all of this happening? Copywriting. I mean, most people probably bought the song off of Zune or Itunes. Most videos that look awesome are ruined because of the earache-cheap-cheesy garbage youtube puts onto videos. I think we should start a boycott or someone should start a petition or something! Does anyone have any other ideas?

I want to get more out of my sound

I've been getting kinda bored with how my music sounds, and I have LOTS of it on my computer. Some is really pushing the line as far as the quality (128kbps bleh), but most of my music is fairly good quality, some of it flac rips of my cds. I can listen to a good cd on a good cd player on my stereo and it has clean basslines and no distortion in the treble, and no crackle unless it was recorded right into the track. But on my mac, mostly only the high bit rate stuff sounds okay on my stereo. Stuff at 192kb/s or vbr sounds crackely and I can't stand it. I often found a lot of the times it was the EQ in iTunes, if I turned it off, sometimes the crackle would go away, has anyone found this with their mac? I have the volume down 4 notches from full, so I know it's not clipping or it would show on my stereo. I've tried surfing the inter webs for DSP software or something of that sort for my mac, but apparently all there is, is like professional mixer board software and just stuff I didn't want to get into. Why can't there be a program made for even a PC that gives you any amount of access to sliders to adjust the EQ of the sound, that doesn't sound like crap? Im not talking itunes what? 10 sliders? I want to be able to adjust like 30-60 sliders per channel, does anyone make eq software like that????

Music Managment Soloution ?

Hello Ok, i have a problem. My iTunes library has 1200 songs in it, not a massive number i know, But the thing is all this music is spread over so many genres and many time periods. Personally i think the way we view music is appalling, iTunes looks like a spreadsheet, my playlists are alphabetical and i cant reorganise them. Its a very boring system and for a creative person its almost impossible to find, group and remember what i like and what i want to listen to. Anyway i cant change that. So my problem is as i have grown up I've been through a number of phases. I used to like rock then heavy metal, briefly pop, then rock and now for the last two years I've been very big on electronic. I love everything about this genre and its grown massively since i have grown up. Now I only like a few of the old rock songs. Its really annoying trying to navigate this library, since all my music is mixed up. ACTUAL QUESTION Do i go through my library and keep all my favorite songs, deleting everything else ? or... Do I keep all the music I don't listen to and invest alot of time into constantly managing the playlists, and never use shuffle ? BONUS QUESTION How do you manage your music, and do you listen to one genre or multiple ? Hopefully soon someone will design a visual, personal way of listening to music, because i'm not an accountant, and my music isn't financial data...

Ibook going totally bezerk

Is there some reason why every time I reinstall osx on my ibook eventually it gets to the point of not working that I have to do it all over again. Now it's starting again after having being reinstalled not that many months ago. I'll just be in the middle of a webpage I use all the time or using itunes looking for a song I always play and the applications just freeze up and close on here, not all the time but sometimes. I take good care of this machine, there's plenty free space, I haven't installed anything that could have done this and it seems to happen to random apps. It's not even broken permissions because whenever I go to repair them there's usually only like 2 that have nothing to do with th system, something like a font or some silly system file. Does this happen to anyone else?

Instructables iOS App Released!

The Instructables iOS app was just released in Apple's iTunes Store.  You can also find it by searching for "instructables.com" within the app store.  The free app helps you find inspiration by browsing all the Instructables, and then share your projects by creating and authoring your own Instructables.  All from your phone, you can take pictures, organize your pictures into steps, add more information, publish, and enter contests.  You can even start an Instructable on your phone, save it to your Instructables account, and finish it on your computer.   The best camera is the one that's already in your pocket, and we're really happy that the best way to document and share your projects is now there too!   We also have an Android version that we're currently testing.      Download it and let us know how you like it.

Unjailbreaking Help

I have a 4th generation ipod touch that is jailbroken. I jailbroke it by using redsnow. Some of the apps cash now so i can't use them, and its a little slower than usual. So, i've decided to unjailbreak it. If I restore it on itunes, will it go back to normal? If I restore it and put on the backed up data, will it include all of the save data on apps, bookmarks on safari, contacts data, and other stuff like that? Do I need to uninstall redsnow from my computer before I restore it? Is there anything that could happen that could possibly make my ipod forever unusable and broken? And does it take a couple hours for it to restore and put on all of the back up data, because I have about 28 gigs of stuff on my ipod? Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm just really concerned that if i try to restore it, something will happen and it will just be a $300 paperweight. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer these questions.

MIT Open-couseware Helps Physics Professor Become a Web Star

Open-courseware is helping some MIT professors gain much deserved recognition. While I never took a class from Walter Lewin, I did watch a Nobel laureate (before he won the prize!) ride that same rocket-powered tricycle across the stage of 26-100 (I wrote a little bit about that here in a comment). At 71, Physics Professor Is a Web StarCAMBRIDGE, Mass. Walter H. G. Lewin, 71, a physics professor, has long had a cult following at M.I.T. And he has now emerged as an international Internet guru, thanks to the global classroom the institute created to spread knowledge through cyberspace.Professor Lewin's videotaped physics lectures, free online on the OpenCourseWare of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, have won him devotees across the country and beyond who stuff his e-mail in-box with praise."Through your inspiring video lectures i have managed to see just how BEAUTIFUL Physics is, both astounding and simple," a 17-year-old from India e-mailed recently.Steve Boigon, 62, a florist from San Diego, wrote, "I walk with a new spring in my step and I look at life through physics-colored eyes."Professor Lewin delivers his lectures with the panache of Julia Child bringing French cooking to amateurs and the zany theatricality of YouTube's greatest hits. He is part of a new generation of academic stars who hold forth in cyberspace on their college Web sites and even, without charge, on iTunes U, which went up in May on Apple's iTunes Store. In his lectures at ocw.mit.edu, Professor Lewin beats a student with cat fur to demonstrate electrostatics. Wearing shorts, sandals with socks and a pith helmet -- nerd safari garb -- he fires a cannon loaded with a golf ball at a stuffed monkey wearing a bulletproof vest to demonstrate the trajectories of objects in free fall.He rides a fire-extinguisher-propelled tricycle across his classroom to show how a rocket lifts off.

LED Room Lighting with Ambient Music Change

Hi guys,  I have been reading through this site a lot and have wanted to get into a bit of electronics but I never really had a project that I wanted to start.  After months of deliberation I have decided on what I want to be my first project. The idea is to have light bars constructed with LEDs quite like the following Instructable https://www.instructables.com/id/Light-Bar-Ambient-Lighting/?ALLSTEPS .  Where my project changes is I would like the lights to 'dance?' to the music.  Now my idea isn't dependant on music volume, for the LEDs to light up but colour change as well.  The only way I could describe it, is quite like the iTunes visualiser. Now both my electronic/programming skills are very basic.  The electronics bit is relatively simple it's more the latter part of the project.  If anyone could steer me in the right direction, it would greatly be appreciated.

Hulu App For Iphone!

Big news for the iPhone and iPod touch owners! Hulu is finally developing an app for the iPhone. From cNet news...Silicon Alley Insider is reporting that a dedicated Hulu application is indeed on its way to the iPhone and should be here in just a few months.SAI says the application will work over Wi-Fi and AT&T;'s 3G network, meaning that users will be able to view programming anywhere with a fast data connection.Rumors suggesting that an iPhone-friendly version of Hulu swirled around this time last year, however, they predated the launch of the App Store, and Hulu flat-out denied that one was being worked on.This time around, though, it's far more plausible, with the upcoming iPhone OS 3.0 software update, which lets developers bake streaming media into their applications. For Hulu, this means that the advertising could be stuck into the mobile stream and that users would be able to watch videos without leaving the application. One of the things that keep this rumor from holding water is that Hulu is in direct competition with Apple's iTunes business. Users of Hulu can watch ad-supported, full-length television shows and movies on their personal computers for free, instead of paying Apple to download a copy for offline viewing. If such an app were available on the iPhone, it would also offer portable TV and movie watching, something not yet offered in Apple's own mobile iTunes app, which is limited to video podcasts. In past instances of this, the company has simply denied applications such as Podcaster from making it through the app approval process, only to launch it as a first party feature later on.On the other hand, some of Hulu's competitors have already gotten a foot in the door, including Joost and CBS-owned TV.com, which has its own iPhone application that streams in content in chunks. In addition, Google's YouTube, whose application comes preinstalled on the iPhone, has recently reached an agreement with major studios, including Sony Pictures, Lions Gate Entertainment, and CBS (publisher of CNET News), to offer visitors full-length TV shows and feature films. If Hulu can't manage to pull off getting advertisements in the stream, using this system, it would be fairly simple to force users to sit through advertisements between clips.Link.
