What ever happened to NOT LIABLE?

Remember the old site that had a "cover page"? Before all of this flash stuff, there was a "Not Liable" section for supposedly dangerous Instructables. What ever happened to it? The majority of Instructables that I like would go in this category, and now it's a hassle to find them. I think the staff should bring back the Not Liable section, and automatically put a disclaimer at the beginning of any Instructable entered in the category.

Is there a durable, waterproof UHF HT that will accept AA batteries?

By waterproof, I of course mean "weather-resistant." I'm looking for an UHF HT that will be just fine if it gets dropped into a lake or falls off an ATV. It doesn't need to float; I can attach a floating keychain to it if necessary. It should also have a AA battery tray that is available from the manufacturer, and still be waterproof with the AA tray. Ideally it would have a keypad. Do you have personal experience with a HT that meets these requirements?

I'll turn your technical drawings into files for 3D printing. [$5 per part]

I have access to Autodesk Inventor Pro and I can convert technical drawings into 3D models that can then be printed using a 3D printer.  If you are interested, please email plans for a small test piece (cube or similar simple object) that I will draw and send for free to make sure everything is compatible. The most common filetype is .STL. I accept payments via PayPal after the model has been reviewed by the customer.

Why are car windshields laminated? Answered

Side and rear windows are tempered so that they shatter into relatively harmless chunks on impact. But windshields are laminated, so that even though they shatter, all of the pieces are kept in place. Why is this? It seems that if a laminated windshield shatters/spiderwebs and remains in place, it would completely obscure the driver's vision while he is trying to control the car. Additionally, if someone is thrown from the car, through the windshield, they would be cut by the glass shards that are stuck to the laminate. So why are windshields laminated, or more importantly, why aren't all windows in a car made of the same type of glass?

I built a gun.

Over the summer, I designed and built an extremely simple single-shot .22 pistol. Below is a video showing all of the parts and the first shots fired. I did this as a design exercise and to see how hard it would be to build a reliable firearm, going from idea to 3D model to working prototype in about three weeks. So far I've fired over 200 rounds with 0 malfunctions, however some parts still need to be heat treated and I need to apply a finish and maybe add some sights. When it's completely finished, I'll port my blog posts into an instructable.

Should I publish this?

I just finished building a RepRap Huxley, and I took time lapse video of each build day. You can see everything on my blog post here. Instructables is a kind of showcase for my work and I was wondering if it would be appropriate to publish each video (there are four) as a step in an instructable. I didn't design the Huxley, and it would be difficult to reproduce my results just from watching the videos, but I did build it myself. That's why I can't decide if I should post it. I wouldn't want people to think I posted build instructions for the whole thing. So what you you think? I would love to get the opinion of some higher-ups.

How do you make an Inventor assembly with parts that interact? Answered

Currently, I can use constraints to assemble parts, but when they are moved around, they simply go through each other. How can I make the parts push each other around? For example, I'm designing a paintball marker, and it has a body, bolt, trigger assembly, and various pins. How would I make the bolt catch on the trigger when it is moved rearward? How would I make the bolt go forward when the trigger is moved rearward? I'm using AutoDesk Inventor Professional 2012. Also, I have access to most current Autodesk programs if they are required.

The Ice King's Crown

It's my take on the Ice King's crown. For the "gold" part, I first tried gluing plastic paint buckets together, but they were too thin. I ended up covering the outside of one bucket in Bondo and then cutting in the peaks with a jeweler's saw. For the jewels, I cut a positive mold for each one out of a scrap of cutting board, then pressed them into clay to make a negative mold. Then I mixed up some casting resin and red dye and cast the jewels. They were epoxied onto the crown before I locked them in with Bondo bezels. If I were to do it again, I would use a more acute conic shape and make the peaks taller. I might also use fiberglass-reinforced Bondo and try a different gold paint. If I'm real adventurous I'll cast the thing out of scrap aluminum.

Witnessing Human Flight

First posted here. Last Friday, I drove up to Maryland to see UMD's Gamera II human-powered quadrotor. They are currently pursuing the Sikorsky Prize, established in 1980. Here's the team testing a new control system. http://youtu.be/3B2of4V35d0 (sorry, the embed function isn't working)   During this test, Gamera II flew for approximately 65 seconds, unofficially tying the endurance record that the team previously set. This flight time, plus the ability to remain within a specific boundary, satisfies two requirements of the Sikorsky Prize. Because the rotors are so close to the ground, the helicopter is benefiting from a cushioning effect of the air between the rotor blades and the ground. This effect will diminish exponentially when the team attempts sustained flight at the required 3 meters. The helicopter transfers the pilot's pedal power by unspooling cable from pulleys, mounted on the shafts of each of the four rotors. Flight time is limited by the pilot's stamina and the amount of cable stored in each pulley. The rotors are constructed of carbon fiber, balsa, and foam, and are covered in a plastic film.  All in all, it was a cool experience. I've never seen so much carbon fiber in my life! I look forward to seeing the team win the Prize.

General New Homepage Improvements

Hey Everyone, It has recently come to my attention though the forums that many of my fellow Instructabrarians, or as caitlinsdad will have it 'Iblers, are not at all happy with the current homepage layout of the website. Now, I'll admit, I'm quite biased towards this. As a new member of the Instructables Staff, I actually got to beta test the new site a week ago and as a long time user of the site, and I quite honestly didn't see anything glaringly wrong with it. Sure it wasn't the original homepage, but I felt the white background and interchanging instructables gave it a much more "Apple-esque" feel. But, after browsing through the forums this morning, I can tell I'm slightly in the minority on this. So, I was really hoping we could start an General All Purpose Site Improvements page with constructive criticism of what you think could be improved. JamesRPatrick has already suggested what kind of things could be improved with the site, and I would really love to hear more. Rather than complain about what you don't like, please tell me what you would like to see improved with the new homepage or features you think could make it better. Look, I'm a fan of the site just like everyone else is and I've been a fan much longer than I've been working here. So if there's something on the homepage you want changed, please tell me because I want to know. As new member of the Instructables team and admin, I can't make any promises that anything can or will be changed on our homepage but I can promise you I will at least bring all of your comments to our next staff meeting. -SHIFT! Total Views Tracker - 06/01/2011

Here's this week's run of total views. Sorry I missed the last two runs over Christmas, was too busy having fun and didn't have the script with me where I was. We have LOTS of new members since the last time I ran it, about 40 more I think! And lots more in the high totals, Fungus Amungus  and Randofo have joined the group so next week we'll be able to see if they're gaining on Canida and whether Fungus is getting enough weekly views to stay ahead of Scoochmaroo. Total Views Tracker - 13/01/2011

Here's this week's tally! The group's now got over 150 members, 50 of which joined since mid December! I didn't get around to making the changes to the script I promised last week, I hope to add links to the list and automatic patch giving soon; I just haven't had time recently! This forum topic is a printout of the results of a Perl script I run weekly. To be included in it, join this  group. The Perl script visits the profile page of each member of the group and extracts their Total Views then saves them to a file that can be opened by me in Excel. I then post the last 3 columns so everyone can compare their weekly gain with their friends. Total Views Count - 20/01/2011 - UPDATED!

Here's this week's total views count. As requested by a few members, all of the names of members are now links to their profiles so you can compare and subscribe to your favourite members more easily. Yay! While you can easily see this data for you on the You page, this script allows people to compare their success/gain with their friends. I hand out patches as achievements when members of the group reach 50k, 100k, 250k, 500k and 1m views.
