Jobs?

Hey everyone...what's up... I was wondering about a few things, I found instructables about a year ago through readymade magazine and website, I love creative things like this. Except I'm not so creative. I kind of come to this website to cheat, I just make things people have posted and show you how to make, lol. Anyways, I'm 20 years old, live in Kansas, and I'm going to school currently to get my degree in Entrepreneurship, I couldn't think of anything more exciting. I'm in the process of a business startup involving a t-shirt line, and even if it doesn't work out in the end, I'd love to have my own business one day.... Which brings me to my question, where do all of you amazing DIYers work? Boring places, just to pay the bills, or somewhere cool where your DIY skills got you the hook up?

Jobs for the Creative Techs?

I love studying electronics and doing creative things with electricity. I was an artist/musician throughout all of my youth and decided to switch over to creative electronics after discovering the art of circuit bending. I want to get a degree involving creative applications of electricity, but I'm having trouble getting a clear picture of what the job market is going to be like after i graduate. I am wondering what creative positions are available, not just with Instructables but in general. Are there any particular companies that would be good to look into? I'm trying to plan my degree so that it will be appealing to the companies i want to work for. I was an artist before i was a tech/engineer so I'm particularily interested in things such as product design, creative tech projects, animatronics, sculpture and art/music installations. Any advice would be great, I'm eager to find a job that will require my creativity and that isn't mundane. Is creativity something that is reserved to be expressed in my spare time or can it exist within the job market as well?

How do I write a resume without any job experience?

I have a slew of jobs to apply for on my school campus, but they're all requiring a resume and cover letter. But, I don't have any job experience! Ugh! For the past year I've been mercilessly attacking every retail outlet and restaurant with my job apps that even I can't keep up (slight exageration). But only 2 fruitless interviews came of it. So what the hell do you do when you have to write a resume when you really have nothing to put on it?

i have a question:

Unfortunately, this question is completely unrelated to instructables and it's DIY nature. i am turning 16 in april and was wondering about getting a job over the summer. if possible i wanted to get a job at the apple store near where i live (is it true you get a free iphone/laptop if you work there?) i would never pay for an iphone or macbook or anything expensive for that matter (i have no money) but seeing as it would be free, a job there would be awesome. anyway, i was wondering what kind of experience you would need in order to work there. i was assuming that they'd want me to have some sort of experience around apple gadgets and mac software. the only one im familiar wiht is the ipod. :-) the apple store iw ant to work at is in the mall. i was wondering if i'd be able to be a stock boy at least or something (if they even have one) anyway, i was just curious....oh and best buy too. there's one coming in and was wondering what kind of experience i'd need. it's a big store so i assumed id just stock things all day. if anyone knows about working at the apple store or best b uy, thanks for answering my question if you do. other (funny) comments are welcome, too. and for all you photographers out there: i want to buy a cheap slr and buy a nice lense for it. i want a canon rebel xti then later on buy a super awesome lense for it (seeing as the lense is much more important) is this a good idea? i'm really fond of canon and like the xti becuase it's decent and it's fairly cheap. what wouild be a good lense? i'd be using it for everyday camera taking and occasional art picturizing. am i making the right decision in doing this?

So I'm Totally Official Now

This is a bit belated, but a few weeks ago I became an official employee here at Instructables. Today is the end of my third week here. I've been busy digging in to all of the duties and learning all of the behind-the-scenes stuff, but it's better late than never to make some kind of announcement, right? I think that Instructables is an awesome place and I'm totally grateful that Eric hired me on. To be able to use your skills in an area where you want to use them is a rare thing. That is why I've been able to spend a lot more time on the site and the forums. So feel free to ask me any questions about what's going on. I also promise to get back on doing some Instructables really soon. This summer has been busy for me. I got married in Italy, got a new job, and am moving to a new house next weekend. So I've been a bit preoccupied. But I'll soon be working through my queue of at least a dozen projects and get them up soon. Cheers.

Looking for someone in NYC who is savvy with electronics & physical construction for a window display project

Help Remedies has envisioned three window displays at a prominent beauty and health chain retailer in NYC. We're looking for someone to realize the ideas into physical window installations including sourcing the materials, building the various components, and installing the elements. The three different displays contain the following elements: 1. an interactive window wherein passersby initiate the activity by pressing a sensor on the window. This activates two small objects to release from the ceiling and fall into a receptacle. 2. two monitors or displays of some sort (could be a projection) which display two Facebook pages with live updating. 3. a large-scale printout with attractively merchandised objects. This is a contract/short-term freelance opportunity. Applicants should have relevant experience in electronics and physical construction. Email melinda@helpineedhelp.com if interested. Thank you.

Getting Teenage Cash

I am 14 and currently living in South Africa. The problem with South Africa is it's major security issues. I could only do the "traditional" (Mowing lawns, babysitting) with family friends, but the problem is in South Africa all families earning above a certain amount are required to hire a maid and a gardener, so that removes all of the "traditional" methods of earning money.

Creative Electrician or Consultant Wanted for Short-Term Project (Good money.)

I'm the owner of a 3-story commercial building in New York City. I basically have 2 tenants: One using the ground floor and basement, the other using the 2nd and 3rd floors. I am trying to sub-meter the electrical use of each tenant so they can pay for their own usage (and have an incentive to conserve). For the last several months I have been interviewing licensed electricians. Apparently, though there are two separate fuse boxes (It's an old building.) they each have both upstairs and downstairs circuits mixed up in them. This, I have been told, will make sub-metering a more complicated and expensive job than it should be (potentially over 5 figures.) as it will involve rewiring. Now, in my experience, most licensed electricians think Arduino is a kind of pasta. They are not hackers, not creative, and never look for unconventional solutions to solving problems. (I'm not knocking the guys, but this is what joining the rat race for survival does to people--especially in NYC.) It never even occurred to me that there might be an unconventional solution to my problem until I spotted this 'ible. If you: Have the skills to implement an adaption of this set-up, or have a proposal of your own as to how to solve my problem; are close to New York; and would be willing to consult with a licensed electrician and myself, you may very well be able to save me $5k or $6k, 60% of which would go to you if the plan was adopted and worked. (Otherwise I'd still compensate you for your time at a rate we both agree in advance to be fair.) Anyone interested please PM me.  Thanks. PS I don't think of myself as a businessman or landlord. I inherited the building, would sell it in a heartbeat if my brother (who I co-own it with) let me, and I'd rather be writing and making stuff out things I find dumpster-diving than collecting rent checks. But since I'm currently stuck in the role, I'm trying to make the building as green as I can.

"Green" jobs in Dallas Texas?

Hey everyone, I'm a 21 year old female college student from Kansas, I just got laid off in December, and looking to move soon to the McKinney, Texas area. My unemployment from Kansas ends in June, at which point I plan on moving permanently to Texas. I'm trying to take this opportunity to find something new and branch out, I've really been wondering if there are any "green" jobs out there that would be willing to give me a shot...I'm kind of a blank canvas, but I guarantee you I'm a hard worker, and I can learn fast. How much should I sell 30 kgs of knex for?

I want to sell my knex in time for christmas to put it towards a Christmas present (GTX 590) and I have pretty much dead on 30 kgs. I was looking on ebay and the average price seemed to be about £10 per kilo. I think £300 seems a bit too much so I was thinking in the region of somewhere around £250. This is just my opinion but I want yours.

Dimension Engineering needs an intern or fulltime thingermajiggerbuilder

Lets pretend that you, intrepid reader-of-postings, have won the lottery. What are you going to blow it on? Beer? Collections of earwaxes from around the world? Bottle-feeding orphan baby whales? Heck no. You're gonna buy you some welders and a CNC machine and a whole slew of electronic bits and bobs. You'll have laser cutters and plasma cutters and nail cutters and cutters to put a cutting edge on your other cutters. You're gonna have goddamn robots that make MORE robots. A drill? _singular_??? I'll take nine, thank you very much! If not, then this isn't really a job posting for you. Still here? Here's the deal. We're desperately dull people. Wretched, really. All we want in life is to make electronic components. No no, not flying electric cars. Just the parts, thank you very much. Our CUSTOMERS, on the other hand, won't stop taking our parts and doing progressively sillier things with them.  They couldn't be content to make a house. They want a WALKING house. "Hello, yes, I have this robot cow that we use to train for rodeo. Its been on the shelf for ten years since the robo-goring..." they say. My poor children get launched into orbit, sunk to the bottom of the ocean, dragged across antarctica. They've powered chairs, couches, bomb disposal robots and bomberman replicas. I shudder to think what ill-advised schemes we'll be helping to perpetrate when my top secret new (and entirely wholesome) projects are done. It fills me with apoplexy just to consider it. Obviously uninteresting people like we lot can't test products for interesting circumstances. What we need is someone who would salivate at the directive of "Find some new way to use these shelves full of robot parts. Make it dramatic. Make it a great writeup. The machine shop is to the left. CNCs on the right. Welding is down the hall, electronics is in the middle. Woodworking shop is at the end of the building. Climbing wall is by the bathroom if you get bored. Here's some budget. Do crazier mechatronic things than our customers do. Report back immediately if you accidentally make a roller coaster or a doomsday device." We certainly do not already have bumper cars, go kart tanks, flame throwers, radio control office chairs, orbotrons and/or backyard roller coasters here. Because those might be interesting. Which we are not.  Anyway, that is a real job posting. For a real job. For which you could be paid. An intern would be okay, a full time creator-of-things would be even better. You could submit a resume, but afor real consideration I'd need to see a portfolio of projects. We don't really have every tool ever made, but that's just because I took some of them home for the weekend and haven't brought them back. Honestly. We're an electronics manufacturer with a mortising machine. Um, because mortises are good, solid, red blooded American woodworking joints. Very boring. Yup. Downsides? We're in beautiful Ohio, home of the low cost of living and, um, did I mention the cost of living is low? Anyway, company website is www.dimensionengineering.com It is a very boring website. Because, you know, very boring people. jobs@ to send portfolios, resumes, or well wishes.

So Excited!

Hey Instructabrarians!  Guess what?  After literally asking and asking and asking for so long now, they've finally agreed and I've finally got my summer dream job.  That's right, starting tomorrow  I get to work as an intern at Instructables, the #1 most awesome show and tell on the net!  This is so cool, and if it wasn't that I need to pace myself for DIY PIXAR at Maker Faire 2011, I might spontaneously combust at any second!  I've been a gigantic fan of this website for more than 4 years now and this is quite literally a dream come true for me.  Not only do I get to work at Instructables but I also get to meet the amazing founders of this awesome website!  Not to mention being able to commute to San Francisco on a daily basis!  This is Awesome and I'm so excited! Anyway, I will be keeping a photo diary for anyone who's interested (as well as updating my personal Flickr page) with weekly activities with the company on my new Nintendo 3DS.  So if anyone's got an .mpo viewer you might be able to see what Instructables is like in more than two dimensions! Well, got to go to bed, lots of commuting to be done tomorrow.  Just thank you to all of the great Instructables employees and to anyone who was nice enough to enjoy the random builds I've created on Instructables. -M.E. PS sorry if it sounds like I'm being overly arrongant about this.  It's just that for people who know me know that this sort of thing never happens for me, so I'm just going to enjoy it while I can.

Ch, 4 In Which Mikeasaurus comes to Instructables and I Build Portal Stuff

Hey Instructabrarians! SHIFT! here to give you all of the semi-recent goings on at Instructables Laboratories!  Last week, our facility opened it's doors to our newest team member Mikeasaurus!  He's been a long time user and fan of the site (you might remember him from such classic 'ibles like Wristwatch Turntables, the very Blade Runner-esque Umbrella Light, and most recently the popular Magnetic Putty ) and we are pleased to have him join us.  So far, he's done a terrific job helping me out with shipping out packages as well as being a fantastic go to guy for any Photoshop editing needs!  As for me, awhile ago for one of our in-house contests, I was looking for unique ways to liven up our lab at Instructables HQ. My inspiration finally from a picture of the iconic cake, from the first Portal game, that hangs – on our bathroom door. I thought it would be really fun to create some kind of companion piece alongside it, and decided to make a couple of themed papercraft models based on the game.  For my first craft I decided to make something that would help protect Instructables’ top secret information from unwanted intruders and rogue test subjects. “Hey”, I thought, “why not the militaristic Turret defenses?” This deadly craft was designed by deviantart’s billybob884 using Pepakura software. He has done some amazing work with papercrafts and Portal and was responsible for designing my amazing GLaDOS papercraft I enlarged 24 X for our recent Game.Life Contest. (“Oh, So NOW you’re going to mention Me? [[=REDACTED=]], you Monster.”) Next, I constructed a tiny 1- inch craft, the fan favorite friendly Companion Cube, desktop edition for our editor-in-chief zazenergy. This craft was designed by user Moony for the /po/ board on 4chan.com Just the thing to help zazenergy with some normal day to day testing!  Finally I created the FrankenTurret that was featured in Portal 2 which (spoiler alert) is a horrific combination of the Aperture Science Weighted Storage Cube. This cool miniature craft, however, came from digitprop.com and was given to Mikeasaurus, who is another fellow Portal fan of our lab. I also have future plans for a fully functioning one and plan to submit it to our Simplebots curator and designer Randofo sometime soon. Anyway, I love Portal and Papercrafts so this seemed like a perfect combination to me. I have a few more Full-Scale versions for some of our upcoming contests, so that should be really interesting. -SHIFT! EDIT: I had pictures of Mike in our office, but can't seem to find them anywhere, sadly.
