Battery packs keeps melting? Answered

Right now i'm trying to build a circuit that goes from a two AA pack to a switch to a potentiometer to a motor but every time I try to add a resistor of any size it always stops working. When I don't add the resistor the battery pack just melts and I have to buy a new one. Does anyone know how I can stop this from happening?

Hello, I have a current problem with creating an instructable. Right now the draft keeps saving. this means I can't go to another step but I can add photo's and text to the page I am currently on. If I create a new tab with instructables he sees only the beginning of my draft which is a shame since that means I need to make the instructable all over again and I was very far. I am using chrome internet browser on a windows laptop I was simply saving what I had wrote down and now it keeps saving for already an hour and I can't do a thing.

We have 12v batteries to support our solar power.  our problem is keeping them warm when we are not at home.  does anyone have any suggestions?  we are often gone for work for 3 - 5 weeks, so we can't do wood or waste oil, and days without sun wont help our batteries.  this year it is very cold, night time wind chills below -10

How to keep door ajar for winter. Cat keeps opening it.

Winter is approaching in Australia. I work in my home office and my computers and sometimes heater [or bread machine :)] keep the office warm. My cat likes to visit for a scratch several times a day. For this, the door must be openable otherwise i have to let the cat in and out. I have been keeping the door nearly closed which keeps the warmth in. However, my cat arrives and virtually bashes it open. The heat in the room is sucked out within minutes if I am distracted by work enough to not close the door ajar on entry or exit of cat. How can I add an upgrade to the door which will keep it closed-ajar if a cat or human uses the door. I would like to solution that can be disabled as in summer I would like the door to be open (which is working and does not need a solution to keep it open). The door is on equal balance (if that makes sense) and I would not like to modify the door hinges. (I had attached an image but must not have enough trust with this site for it to display). The door is a colonial door if you see pictures on google images.

keep a papermodel in good condition? Answered

I've just finished a paper model boat, it's a fishing boat with a lot of small detail, and especially rigging with thread. can anyone suggest any ways to keep it from getting broken/ and i don't mean, 'make sure you don't sit on it' or something, but maybe a spray on adhesive that would keep all the joints stiff, but wouldn't damage the paper.

Keeping my equipment warm

Recently i went to take pictures in the middle of the night at Subfreezing temperatures and the front of my lens formed ice. so i need to keep the lens warm, there are many solutions but the one i thought would be fun to use is the use of a heating element. I found resistance heating wire, i would like to make an object that could fit around my lens and keep it warm. to prevent overheating i will use a microcontroller with temperature sensors to cut of the supply of electricity at a certain temperature. i just want to keep the lens at more than 5 degrees centigrade. I think my 12v lead acid battery will be enough for this kind of project. My question is how to do it, how much heating wire should i use? how much heat will it make? what wire should i use? Will it work? Any other ideas are welcome.

Comment boxes keep moving? Answered

Hi!  I'm currently writing my first instructable, and I am trying to comment on some of the pictures, however, on some of the pictures the comment boxes keep moving to a different spot and resizing whenever I am in full preview mode.  It isn't on all of them, but it is pretty important to have these comments in the right spot as my instructable is on rappelling, and the slightest error can be very dangerous.  Has anyone else ever run into this before, and if so, how did you fix it? I've already tried moving them in edit mode, as well as the comment edit mode provided in full preview. Thanks in advance!

Don't keep rats as pet !

When my brother decided to travel around the country, he has been forced to leave the white rat he kept as pet ... and I've been forced to adopt this little animal.Rats as pets quickly become cute, funny, and show a personality that make them even more endearing ... In other words, "la souris" (the mouse), as I renamed it because I was unable to remember the name my bro gave her formerly, quickly found her place in my home and my life. So, happy end ??No !No, because rats pets quickly develop lot of weird diseases :- dermatitis - mange- bumble feet- cysts- tumors- etc- and various infections and self-injuries because the rat scratches or bites itself because of one or several of the above diseases. The health and the life of your rat will quickly become a nightmare, and, if like me, you tend to consider your pets like full members of your family, your rat pet will become a great source of worries ... and if you're not cruel, you'll be forced to give an end to its agony. Because that's a real slow and cruel agony. Most people who adopt a rat as pet seems not to be aware of all the problems this little animal will have, neither how expensive it will be to look after it.The internet is full of sites dedicated to the diseases of rats pet. My advice : If you love pets, don't adopt or give a rat as pet !20080225 update :Despite what I said, if you still want to adopt a rat, then, you should better document yourself a lot before commitment.Member Please wrote a tiny instructable about How to take care of a rat the right way. Keeping Argentine ants out of a home?

Does anyone have firsthand experience at keeping Argentine ants out of a home? I've read several websites that all seem to give a laundry list of household substances one can use to keep them at bay, but nothing saying "I've tried this for Argentine ants, and it works". I've tried ant traps, which work for a little while, and I've tried pepper, which didn't really work at all. Ideally, I'd like to put something around doors and windows to keep them out, but if there are other methods, I'm open to those too. Any help is appreciated!

They (the people that take our money) don't post anything that interests me and they won't allow people to view other peoples projects unless we pay. I think it's a rip off that shouldn't be. These people are greedy and don't contribute anything except for a place to view this on the net. A lot of the projects here are crap and nobody here does anything to verify the projects. They started out with a free website and now it's a rip off....

We need a "keep in sight" button

Often an instructable or a comment is enough interesting to deserve our attention during certain time. In this case, a "keep in sight" button could be very useful, to receive an email for any newness with it. Example: recently wilgubeast published an "featured author" about me. I must enter to look it each day to see and answer all new comments. This is not the only case, other topics or discussions have that need for me, too.

LEDs keep on taking over. Excellent.

It's no secret that we love using LEDs for our projects. They sip power and are fantastically tiny. You can even get an introduction to how they work with just an LED and a coin battery. If you haven't used one yet, make it a new year's resolution to make one light up this year. If you want to complete any resolutions, that'll be one of the easiest.Yesterday's announcement of the Macbook Air in San Francisco pushes the LEDs further. This isn't the first laptop to have it, but it's a dramatic display of how far the tech has come and how far it needs to go. LEDs aren't perfect for every use, but they hopefully will be someday.According to this article some of the current goals are for better whites, deep-UV, and quantum cryptography. All of which sound pretty tasty. But what about you? What do you want from LEDs that you don't see just yet?

iTunes keeps "Re-buffering stream"?

Hello! lately i have had a lot of troubles with iTunes, mostly it doesn't want to load or won't allow me to purchase things. i've tried reloading Itunes twice and that works for a day or two then its back to not working. i have got the latest version and a good internet connection. the most common problem lately is when i try to listen to a preview of a song it will play it for a few seconds then stop and say "opening URL Re-Buffering Stream" and that happens on every preview I've tried? it continually does it, saying that every few seconds... it worked fine yesterday and i was able to listen to previews without any trouble but this morning its back to the Re-buffering thing? i don't really want to call Apple help as there doesn't appear to be a section for this kind of thing and they ask for personal information... has anyone else had this problem and know how i can fix it? thank you! from AAG

BUG: Keeps changing log-ins

OK, a weird bug - Roger-X was editing his first instructable, and when he changed steps it suddenly changed from being logged in as him, to being logged in as me. No strange messages or useful screen-shots - it was just the bit at the top that changed. The page also locked, so that in the end we had to shut down Firefox and re-start it. Later, when I was looking at my comments, the login suddenly jumed back to Roger-X's. Again, no odd messages, and this time it didn't lock - I could access all his account quite easily. Additionally - we are experiencing problems logging in and out - if one of us logs out, the other can't log in until we shut down FF and re-start (yes, we've tried flushing the cookies etc). We type in our username and password, and it just jumps back to the login option. It's bleedin' annoying, folks.

Mozzies and how to keep them outside....

Down here the winter was too short and not cold enough, meaning insect life is literally exploding in numbers already. The house I moved in has badly installed flyscreens on the doors and windows, most likely due to the fact that the house is moving up and down in several points... Anyway, due to the gaps everywhere I found myself with the problem that the mozzies covered my entire front and back door areas. With an unsupporting landlord not even allowing me to replace the bad flysreens with proper ones at my cost I was left with less invasive options to tackle the problem. Before you ask: No I am not even allowed to fix holes in the flyscreens covering the windows :( My next step was to check the local garden center for some natural solutions. Lemon grass seems to do the trick for the inside, the smell also keeps flies away really good. But I had to put the pots in the garden as the ongoing smell gives me headaches. It also did very little to prevent the mozzies from coming inside when I opened any outside door for a few moments. Only way out was to get rid of the mozzie population having daily meeting around my doors. At the local hardware store I found several "surface sprays" and they all stated to be very effective against cockroaches, spiders and other crawling insects - too bad I don't have a problem with them LOL After asking I was informed that those sprays do little to nothing for flying insects, including mozzies and that I would waste my money. During my next shopping trip I got desperate and grabbed a can of surface spray from Aldi. Was under 3 bucks, so I had nothing to loose compared to the 40-80 bucks for a canister of "the good stuff" from the hardware store. At the checkout an old lady asked if I moved into a new house with cockroaches when she saw the spray and I said that I only have a problem with mozzies. She recommended to eat more bananas ROFL Back home it was already too sunny at the front door for the mozzies to show up so I waited till the late afternoon and sure enough I found the area covered with them again. The spray annoyed them badly but I kept spraying all cracks, surfaces and also the gaps at the roof line. Kept checking for a while but could not see any real effect on the mozzies other than swarming around me and trying to suck my blood. Next morning I found the floor at the door covered by a carpet of dead mozzies! I don't mean a few, I am talking enough to take the brrom to clear them up :) Now for the past 5 days the body count is going down quite fast while my door stays free of mozzies. Still have them flying around in "normal" numbers but I can get in and out without a swarm of them following me. Since the product is plant based and considered to be without any side effects on humans or pets I will see how long it lasts and then just spray again - this three dollar can should last throughout the summer... You might wonder why I go through all these troubles... Long story short, I am quite allergic to the bites. Happened as a kid when during a warm summer night at a friends place I got so many bites that the doc gave up counting. He reached over 200 just by counting my head and face to the shoulders... Now I am allergic to the bites, the itch lasts over a week and thebite area swells up to the size of a 50 cent coin with blisters forming after 2 days. You might not get it hat bad but if you do suffer from the bites I found two remedies that help with the itch and reaction: a)  BBQ igniter (the manual push type without batteries)! They work like the expensive clickers you get at the pharmacy but last much longer - plus they require more force. The rounded tip is placed directly onto the bite and when you push the button in to "get shocked" two things happen. First the pressure forces the soliver that causes the reaction into deeper skin layers where there are less receptors for the itch. Secondly the high voltage breaks down certain parts of the soliver making it far less effective to cause harm. Downside is that you might like the shock in certain areas and that you should shock at least 10 to 15 times to get a real benefit from it. b)  Hydrogen Peroxide (3%) You put a drop of H2O2 directly onto the bite or for difficult areas use a soaked cotton bud. Rubbing it in with a cotton bud for a minute or two works best IMHO. You might see your skin turn white or feel a slight burn right where the bite is - that is normal and harmless. The hydrogen peroxide releases oxygen into the skin - this turns the skin white for short period of time. But the oxygen also breaks down the soliver and the byproducts of the body reaction to it. Works great for horse fly bites too. Downside here is that you should not overdo things and that you should test first how sensitive you are to the reaction. A good test is to apply it onto a small cut or scratch to clean it. If you tolerate that then won't even feel it on a mozzie bite. I hope some of this will help you through the summer ;)
