The Kinetic Warbow (in progress)

So I got a lot of responses and It seemed to me that the TR would be the best choice for a gun to integrate with my semi auto.  However I would have to do this in a way that did not obstruct the firing process of the semi auto, and therefore I had to put the turret off to the side.  Using techniques from the D-TAB, I was able to integrate the same bow and, with a turret on each side.  These turrets do not sag like in the original D-TAB, and they can be wound in the same way that KILLERK's most recent TR is wound.  If I can, I will use a Swagboss-like trigger in order to isolate each shot, though only one pin will be pulled back.  Let me know what you think!

Swinging Kinetic Energy Sticks

Good day everyone. Thanks for making this one of the best sites on the net.I love the stuff I've been browsing through here - truly awesome. I've been searching the net to try to find a "how to" on the swinging sticks desktop sculpture as shown in Iron Man 2.It looks super cool and the science behind it makes it even more interesting. I cannot find these anywhere locally , I am from South Africa.Perhaps someone here would be able to put together some details on how I can make one ? Thanks and have great day.

The Kinetic Rifle V.1

Here it is: the bullpup, tube mag, bolt-action, pump-action, sling semi-repeater.  This is by far my most favorite gun I have ever built.   The reason I call it a "semi-repeater" is because while it has a magazine, loading it involves a two-step process of pulling back the rubber band and then pulling the pump.  Therefore you don't have to load each individual bullet into the barrel by hand, the pump does that for you, but the band still has to be pulled back manually.  The gun was originally intended to have the pump bull back the band as well, but to do so the pullback distance would have to be greater, requiring a larger barrel to house a longer pullback, requiring pieces I just don't have.  When I get the pieces I am going to make the pump pull the band back, and I will post that as the V.2. What I love about this gun is that it takes many concepts and combines them to work in sync with one another.  I also like the fact that there is almost no limit to how powerful you can make this gun, since the ratchet can hold an incredible amount of tension.  Overall it is an incredible gun, averaging ~60ft with the 1 band used in the video.  Though it isn't the most reasonable choice for a war (it only holds 4 shots in the mag and is huge), it is well on its way to becoming the most efficient knex repeater out there. -Kinetic iMovie wrecks.

Ideas for how to make a kinetic pin wall door

Http://youtu.be/F88D-eQMC9c The concept was to take the pin walls that you see at museums and science centers and make a kid's bedroom door out of these push pins.   From talking to manufacturers it appears to be a pretty pricey proposition (.25 cents per pin / approx 55,000 pins per 4x4 area). I was wondering if anyone had any ideas how to make this more economical?  Or if it had already been done and there was an instructable already out there? Thanks!

How do I build a faraday /kinetic battery with 2 coil wraps in series for added voltage?

I have seen a few projects on building a faraday battery for powering projects, but there is nothing on how to build one from scratch. There is no info how to determine output, choose the proper magnet, etc. I have also heard that you can build one with multiple coil sectors in series for a higher max output.

Marbles in a funnel?

Does anyone remember the museum piece that described angular momentum or some such thing? It looked like a large wooden funnel with marbles that were augered up from below and let loose to roll around and down, spinning up the lower they got? Has anyone made a home version of this? Can something like this be made into a coffee table?

How to balance a mobile... and attach its parts?

I've always been interested in making mobiles, or at least making the various parts that I would like to balance in a mobile. I've only really made one, which was a real hack job. I want them to look nice, so...two questions: 1) Is there a scientific method for achieving balance in a mobile apart from guessing? In the one that I did make, I used a fairly thick flower-wrapping wire, tied the parts to each end, and then found the fulcrum by balancing it on my finger. This is an awfully rough approach and is only so accurate. It worked okay, but I'd like to know how you've found success in doing this. 2) As far as attaching the parts to the end of the wire, how do you do it? I'm not very happy with the flower-wrapping wire because it's so tender and warps so easily. It's impractical for shipping or moving the mobile. Not at all durable. So what material do you use for the wire portion, and HOW do you attach your parts to it? I've tried twisting loops into the wire, but it really messes up the general straightness of the wire. I've tried tying fishing line onto the wire and adding a dollop of glue. But that's just ugly. If you have a good online source for making simple mobiles, and the materials one should use, I'd love that too!

water-based kinetic LED lamp

I want to mak a kinetic light using high-powered LEDs to produce glitter line through a thin layer of agitated turbulent water in a wall mounted shelf. So, this gives me a few questions, but let me start with the idea I've got. I want to seperate a shelving unit (preferably solid wood not particleboard with some decent HxDxW) into two compartments. A glass sheet would be slid into grooves onto the side supports. The upper portion of the shelving unit would then be wood, waterproofed with some thin styrene plastic sheets. The bottom would then be composed of a large aluminum sheet (recessed slightly upwards for astheatics) which would house several LEDs in addition to the power adapter and voltage regulator. This would likely follow the "powering high powered LED" tutorial's alternate power source to the pucks. At this point a small pump would be placed into the upper compartment along with just enough water to submerge the pump to a safe level. Perhaps a small recess would be included in the top to allow instant colour shifts by using stained clear plastic sheets (this would reduce total illumination, but these are to be mood/ambient accents not primary lighting source) to avoid any of the more expensive/complex colour shifting lamps. The big question I have at this point is how thermally safe this would be, and how much LED I would actually need to achieve decent brightness. Also, I would prefer if the bottom was modular enough I could remove and work on it without dissasembling the entire assembly, but this may not be possible. Finally, I was wondering if I could run the heatsink material up the ront of the shelf, past the glass, and into the water (this should give great heat dissipation) and have a SAFE and STABLE waterproof join between a flush glass-metal joint with possible use of epoxy and/or silicone caulking. Anything not specified in here I'm uncertain of how to do exactly. So! If anyone has any ideas, suggestions, or awareness that this is pure madness (or has a better way t oget those glitter lines i lust for) please let me know.

Off To College

Greetings fellow iblers! Well, the summer has come to a rapid close, and in 4 days (!!!) I am going to be off to the University of Rhode Island, studying the arts of Mechanical Engineering, Philosophy, and the Spanish language.   First off, I want to thank this awesome community (new members and old) for an awesome 4 year experience.  Despite some drawbacks, this is a community that has greatly matured as mechanical designers, and more importantly, as members of a team, throughout the years, and I am proud to have been a part of it.  Now, although I won't have access to K'nex, I will have access to a computer, to a pencil and paper, and to the resources that will strengthen and broaden my understanding of mechanical functions.  This is not goodbye quite yet.  I will still be very active among the community with comments and plan to continue my "Guide to the next generation of K'nex Guns" as long as I can find the time.  I will also be thinking up new mechanisms and concepts (that's going to be my job in college anyways) and will post designs as much as I can.  And who knows, I might just surprise you guys with something over Christmas break. *hint hint* I am going to try and get instructions up for my improved Kinno-2 within the next couple days.  It now holds 8 shots, has a locking mag release, and will feature a much better bullet mag, so keep an eye out for it. Again, thanks to everybody who has made this such a great experience, and while my methods may change a bit, I will keep working to engineer a stronger community, no matter where I may find myself!

A Challenge: DIY gravity lamp

I have decided to power the lighting in my house with gravity alone starting next year. The idea started here: Greener Gadgets: Gravity LampI have some ideas about how to make it possible using some existing instructables and I though I would share this to get people thinking about new ways to use gravity as a power source. Think about it, gravity is clean, constant, eternal and EVERYWHERE. I think that this instructable has some of the essential components: Cordless Drill Crank Charge BatteriesIt gives a basic example of kinetic energy being converted into electricity, but for this application the kinetic energy will be supplied by gravity instead of the hand crank. The real fun with this project, I think, is the different ways that the kinetic energy of the weight can be harnessed. The screw used by the Gravity Lamp is just one method. A weight on a rope that is wrapped around a spool or crank is another option or even something based on the mechanism of a grandfather clock. One could even imagine a single massive weight that the whole family would hoist, with the help of pulleys, every evening to power their home lighting. Who knows.....It's time to start a gravity revolution.

Vice CKG Bolt Action Rifle

I haven't posted anything for a few months, and I decided to begin work on something that would blow everyone away.  My goal was to create the most efficient, most power, most versatile mag fed knex rifle ever.  I discovered a way to do that when I came up with the Bullet Transfer System (BTS) that you saw in my BTPA pump action rifle.  However, the BTPA had a several drawbacks.  The first was the size of it.  It was just way too big.  Second was that the ammo it shot was connector ammo, and would start spinning out very quickly.  Last was that the ram barely had any time to accelerate,  as the bullet was placed right above the handle.  I suddenly thought of a design that would solve these problems, quickly drew them out, and began work.  The result was the most efficient, versatile, and powerful mag fed gun ever made, the Vice CKG.  CKG stands for Compact Knex Gun, and I am truly proud if it.  The trigger is a variation of Zak's so I give him credit for that.  So exactly how efficient is this gun?  I was able to get 60+ feet with a string of two #64s with the long range round.  The yellow rods get around 50 feet, only because they spin out after a while, but with two #64s unsharpened yellows can go right through a box from a few feet away.  What's the secret to this incredible efficiency?  First off, the firing pin is a grey rod+a gray connector long, giving it that extra room to accelerate.  Second, the trigger is as far back as possible.  Third, the rods are placed as far away from the ram, giving it time to accelerate.  Finally, the BTS allows the bullet to stay in place with nearly no contact between the bullet and the gun.   THIS IS THE MOST POWERFUL, EFFICIENT, AND VERSATILE MAG FED GUN OUT THERE. (I know that statement may sound a little bold, but I am very confident in saying it) Pros 60+ feet range single shot with two #64s 50 feet range with yellows with two #64s Extremely versatile (perfect for long and close range) Looks great 15 yellow rod mag capacity You will dominate the battlefield Cons Reload time (for me anyways)   This video is a little out of date, I have made some upgrades since it was made/

Is it possible to use the fan in a laptop or computer to produce kinetic energy that will produce extra energy for power

Its not like powering a windturbine with lots of desk fans because obviously thats pointless but we need the fan in the computer and we could also use the thermal energy that usually escapes the computer as extra energy. what do you think? im guessing this is gonna have a simple answer why not because someonme should have allready thought of this, a car powered by kinetic energy from the wheels and or wind power outside the car. the ultimate green peace kinda car should be powered by wind rotation, wheel rotation, solar power on the bonnet or roof. iv heard some electric cars do use the motor spin to produce extra energy, when i said the spin of the wheels i also ment the spin of the motor, would using the wheels produce more power than juist the motor, thanks for any help instructables-ers ?

BTPA-7

This is my newest project-the BTPA-7.  BTPA stands for bullet transfer pump action.  This gun brings out the new year of innovation, as it is my most innovative and successful gun yet.  It is a bolt action gun, making for superior efficiency, combined with a pump, making for a high ROF.  Unlike other bolt action guns, however, this gun uses a pusher to transfer the bullet to the firing chamber, and also unique to other bolt action guns, the bullet stays there until it is fired, no matter how you shake or tilt it.  Right now I have most of it done, but do not have the pieces for the ram guide, which is crucial to making the gun fire successfully, keeping the ram in tact as it is pulled back.   Here is a video of the bullet transfer system: And here is a video of the gun with the pump (I also removed some pieces that were getting in the way of the trigger so now it works perfectly) Let me know what you think.

What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? Answered

I had the idea to have the kids at my favorite summer camp group to "pump" their own electricity because one of the more primitive camps in that group already pumps their own water, but doesn't use electricity. What's the best way to put kinetic energy in batteries? When i say best i mean highest mechanical advantage.   The ways i can think of are: -shaking a magnet through a coil of wires -spinning a wheel to shake  "          " -pedaling to spin the wheel to "       '' -using a lawn mower sort of wheel. Also to refresh my memory what are the other ways (with a higher mechanical advantage) to move a magnet with coils to generate electricity?

The KLS V.2 *Updated*

Can I get a W00T for summer??? Now that summer is here I have had a bit of extra time to dedicate to my gun building, and I have completed my Semi Auto.  The Kinetic Last Stand is a small, compact semi auto rifle that utilizes 4-shot low cap removable mags and has a firing mechanism that originated from Louis XIV's semi auto, just a bit more complex.  My idea of this has been around since christmas when I posted pictures of my first attempt of this gun, however It required too much energy to pull the trigger that was necessary, and so I created the V.2, which uses a simpler, more efficient trigger that allows you to utilize the energy of 2 #64's with little effort.  The only downside is the mag capacity, which can be improved by a about 1.5 for every half moon connector that the mag, and in turn, stock, is extended.   Thats about it...the video will demonstrate just how impressive this gun is. Maxed out means the maximum amount of power I would use for a war for the sake of keeping a high rate of fire. Let me know what you think!

Physics question? Why doesn't this work? Answered

So included I have the original "troll physics magnet car" that supposedly would use magnets for propulsion. I know that it doesn't work since the front magnet pulls the car and the car pulls the front magnet, so the energy is evened out. But if you put a stronger magnet on the front, then the smaller magnet on the car wouldn't have enough strength to equalize the larger magnet, so why wouldn't the car move forward?  What if you applied the same idea to a generator? (look at the picture with the circles and rectangles) Wouldn't the bar magnets continue to repel each other and make the generator wheel would spin forever? If the wheel was balanced and was given a little push to get things going, I don't see what the problem would be. I'm not planning on building this machine, so trial and error is out of the question for me.  Please help!

Because I am attached to both (embarrassing, isn't it?) I want to ask you guys which one you think I should take apart: 1)  The Kinetic Rifle               or 2)  The KLS v.2 Either one should give me enough pieces, so don't take size into your consideration.  Thank you for helping me out and I promise I will have something great for you guys within the month. -Kinetic

What i've been up to: the bolt action, bullpup, tube mag, pump action, dual shot, sling repeater. Got your attention yet?

Ok, for those of you who had seen my shotgun design, you could probably tell it was over before it had even started.  I had tried 5 different layouts and I couldn't get past the frontmost barrel without running into problems.  I think it was a cool design, but it was just too much for K'nex. Most of my best get designs just pop into my head at the most random times.  Is it just me, or does this happen to other people too?  Anyways I was trying to make it until the bell in pre-cal (my teacher is a crazy cat woman who enjoys talking about her imaginary husband) and I just started drawing this design.  Not only did it kill 10 minutes but it may just be the best thing I've come up with in terms of K'nex. The magazine looking thing in front of the handle is actually the driving mechanism in this gun.  Shots are housed in the stock pressing up against the pusher.  When the pump is pulled, the pusher moves down, allowing two bullets (one shot) into the chamber.  When the pump is released, the pusher pushes the bullets up against an upper section, where they wait for the trigger so be pulled, releasing the ratchet and the rubber band, launching the two bullets with a decent (I hope) spread.   Even though it doesn't shoot yet it is fun to just load the ammo (thats just how cool this gun it).  It is probably going to be a little different than what is shown in the video by the time I post it, but right now I'm just going with what I have.  I hope you like it and please let me know of any improvements you can come up with. -Kinetic

Kinetic art help...

Hi! Longtime lurker,1st time poster. I am wanting to make a kinetic work that kinda resembles ghosts... fabric that moves similar to this but more covered like it's someone with a sheet over themselves... I have bought nitinol (.15" gauge), burnt my fingers applying electricity directly (LOL) and thought I'd try a mechanism to pop up similar to a jack in the box or whack a mole, or a cam and follower. I really love the NiTi but I am open to any suggestions from any resourceful peeps here. I am gonna go shopping for toys to open up sometime this week for ideas but in the meantime... The main features I want are: random activation, pop up go back to original position, inexpensive... Thank you in advance for ANY insight, ideas. Much appreciated. Yours truly, The Lurk
