What would you do with a big laser?

I may soon come into the possession of three 250 watt laser heads (class 4/IIIb). I have a few ideas for projects and the like (yes, some involve fire), but I want to throw the net out. If it doesn't require multiple engineering degrees, I'm all ears. What would you do with even one big laser? What about three of 'em? Let me know!

I didn't know where else to post this - let me know if I should repost it elsewhere. I'm looking for plans{?} for a laser beam "expander" that doesn't cost hundreds of US dollars. {I'm on a BUDGET.} Short version of why: If you read my profile, my hobbies include 'Kite Aerial Video'. Basically, it's aerial video shot by a camera suspended from a kite line. {Usually done that way versus putting the cam directly on the kite.} I'm 'researching' using a laser {or lasers} for night time illumination with a miniature low-light video camera for wildlife / nature observation. Most of the stuff I need - including the vid cam and laser - aren't too expensive. However, the cheapest expander I have found was over $300 USD. I was hoping I could find something cheaper here. I know someone who did something similar with a Generation 3 night vision monocular. However, a Gen 3 night vision imager is too expensive for me. And for KAV, the cheaper Gen 1 & 2 imagers won't work. Thanks in advance. -Allan, aka RocKiteman N.E. North Carolina, USA

Laser square projector

I work in a manufacturing facility and we've got a lot of forklifts that are buzzing around everywhere all the time. there's an initiative to make it safer for forklifts to interact with pedestrians. one of the ideas someone had came from another facility where they have these blue spot lights on top of the truck that project a blue dot in front of and behind the truck. you see the blue dot and you know a truck is coming. there's some concern that this might get missed by a pedestrian. a thought came to me, being a nerd, that we could use something maybe a little easier to see. I looked in to some disco type laser displays that you can display custom graphics with, but there's concern about how sturdy they are or how long you'd actually be able to use one (whatever it is would basically have to be on almost 24/7). we've got several Motorola barcode scanners, and the long range models (mc 9190) have a feature where it projects a red square to show the area where the scanning will take place. it's a solid red square, not just a perimeter, that scales up with distance (it's like 4"x4" if you're within 2' and goes up to a pretty large size the farther out you're pointing it). These scan guns are way more expensive than this project calls for of course. Does anyone know of a source for JUST the imagers for these things? or could anyone suggest a way to replicate the effect...a big red square on the floor, with other equipment. needs to be able to run for a long time, hopefully could be powered by a 24-36v DC source, possibly motion detection (though not really necessary)

Laser engraving slate

Hi all Thinking about putting a project together based on some of the great instructables on here. Can anyone shed any light on how much power I will need for a laser that will engrave slate? I am not sure whether a diode laser will be up to the job or whether it will have to b a co2 laser. Any info would be appreciated.

DIY Laser pointer

Battery power

I have a battery powered laser on top of a spinning disc. This laser runs out of battery fairly quickly, I need to make it last longer somehow. Could I wire the laser to multiple batteries to make it last longer? If i manage to find a mains powered laser then it spinning constantly wouldn't work as it would have a wire. I ideally need to find a way to power this laser (probably 2 lasers) for most of a day with something that fits on a fairly small spinning disc. Any ideas? Cheers

Laser burn to the eyes

On Saturday morning my eyelids will be pulled back by retractors and held open, ethanol will be poured into my eyes, a flap of epithelial (outer layer of the eye) will be peeled back to reveal the cornea, then an Eximer laser will burn the surface of the cornea. Apparently, the burning smell can be quite unpleasant :-/ Has anyone else had laser eye surgery? Cheers, Pat. Pending

Dividing a laser beam

I'm working on a project that utilizes a series of laser beams, about 8. Instead of having 8 separate laser pointers/diodes, I think it would be easier if I were to find a way of splitting the beam of light from one into 8 beams of light. Does anyone have any ideas? Something like shining it through angled Plexiglas or some kind of prism?

Ipod laser pointer hack...

bought a laser pointer that plugs into a 2nd gen iPod nano (hey it was $2), and since I don't own one, (3rd gen FTW) I took it apart. Now I've got some problems: a) How much power does an Ipod put out? I cant just hook this sucker up to a AA? I don't wish to power it through an iPod. b) The negative wire wasn't soldered, I think i know where it goes but I'd like to be sure All I know is it's a red laser pointer laser, and there wasn't any info on the packaging other than don't shine in your eye...

Just connecting power to it, last i heard, is bad to do. What's the best way to connect this diode? Here's the specs: Diode Package Type: 5.6mm Max Output: ~150mW CW Max Current: ~110mA Lase Threshold: ~31mA Lase Voltage: ~4 volts Operating Voltage: ~5 volts Wavelength: ~407.5nm How to make a circuit to power this?

project idea: "Laser" hair regrowth comb

(I apologize if this is not the right place to post this) Long time Instructables fan. Anyway, I had been reading about those laser hair combs that claim to regrow hair and realized, this is a perfect opportunity to DIY. For reference, this is the device in question: I don't know anyone personally who's used it, so I don't know if the thing actually works or not, but I'm not going to spend $450 to find out. Does anyone have any advice for proceeding? Take about a dozen computer mice, remove the LEDs and lasers, place on comb? Where would one go about purchasing the right parts?

Laser Cutting Fabric

I study product design and I'm designing a home craft laser cutter machine, I was hoping anyone who has experimented with laser cutting fabric/ clothing/accessories could share what tips they found made the process easier or the problems that occurred whilst doing this. I would appreciate if you could help me with a few questions  I have :) What did you use to keep the fabric straight whilst laser cutting? What would be the best material to put in between the fabric to prevent cutting through for example both sides of a t shirt, plastic sheet or cardboard or.. ? Would you find it beneficial if you could have a small machine to cut out smaller sized fabric to attach for dresses, tops etc of for accessories? If there is any aspect of the process that you think would benefit from being made simpler what would it be? Thank you for your time Any feedback would be much appreciated Kelly-Ann Moore Staffordshire University Student

Laser TV Anyone?

While echo_anomie's laser projector is a finalist in the Laser Cutter Contest, a full-color laser projection TV was announced at CES. The LaserTV is coming from Mitsubishi and even though it's a 65-inch beast and is rear projection the footprint isn't that bad and the price is set to be on par with LCDs and plasmas of the same size.At home I watch movies on a 20" Daewoo that I picked up from Best Buy a few years ago because I needed it for work. It works fine enough for me, but I do like to keep tabs on the new tech so I occasionally go and check out the monster TVs that Best Buy likes to push. So far the colors and viewing angles haven't completely sold me enough to drop several hundred or a couple thousand just so I can enjoy the occasional DVD a little more.Still, I'm curious as to how these will look and maybe, just maybe, in a few years I might buy one. What do you guys think? And no discussing the depth please because these aren't that deep and nobody really moves their huge TVs around. link with slightly NSFW pics

Light Gun Duck Shooter.. Gone?

Does anyone know why hand held light guns are not all that common..? I spent literally years as a child on the Master System (he he, that name still makes me laugh) playing light gun games like duck shooting etc... These guns were remarkably accurate and fun to play with!! So why did they go out of fashion? I mean c'mon I know they are available for SOME games but these are limited.... How could people not want a hand held weapons to make games such as halo more interactive... Is it that it is just to expensive for the general market, or is it true was it really the Master system?? P.S did anyone every finish "Alex the kid" the built in game?
