layout of the site

why does instructables have to change the layout for the worse every time i get used to the old one? this most rescent one is horrible! it just might make me quit the site. ***edit***  i didnt realize how whiny this sounded until after i posted it. i dont like that there is a drop-down for the different channels in the catergories. and the tape around the pictures in the instructables are annoying. the main screen doesnt fit onto my internet window any more, i have to use a scrollbar at the bottom to see it all

New Layout

I'm a very compulsive browser, and when I noticed that all the categories were no longer laid out in a neat little row at the top of the page, well i left and went here .. check the lay out.. kinda looks like the old one instructables had.. everything easy to find with out jumping through hoops. That's my $0.02

New Layout?

I, being a freak who reads every new instructable, don't like the new layout. I used to hit "ALL", then sort by "RECENT" so I could see all the new stuff for the day... Now when I hit "ALL" it just stays on the home page, and there is no "RECENT" section. I am not about to go through every tab "All, Art, Craft, etc etc" and scroll to the bottom to find the "RECENT" header for each and every page. Thats a lot more work than many are willing to do. Really, folks, I would love to have the old functionality back. Is there a way to view it the old way?

There doesn't seem to be any layout formatting in PMs any more, not even line-breaks. If a message is more than a line or two long, or involves several replies back and forth, it gets very annoying.

Wow a new layout again! Nice. I'm not sure which i actually prefer. Which did you like best? by the way: Look for my instructable among the other great instructables in the photojojo contest! I dont watn to tell you the name or give you a link, that way, you'll look through other i'bles first! There's a LOT of great i'bles there. As much as I'd like and need that wifi card, there are others much more deserving. so go out there and vote vote vote! May the best instructable win!

Bug in the Instructables Layout

On my computer, when I am on an Instructable, slideshow, or video the main layout of the Instructables website changes. The righthand sidebar moves down to below the last comment and makes the page a lot longer. Also the drop down bars at the top are longer because they only allow one link per row.I don't know if this is just the new layout of the Instructables or if it is just something with my computer. Whatever it is it has just gotten annoying and I had to tell someone. Could someone (Preferably the admins)tell me what's wrong.EDIT 6/22/08It is fixedit has been fixed for weeks so stop giving me useless advice

Protoboard Layout Software?

I'm looking for recommendations for good software for making schematics and layouts for protoboard (you know, the copper clad perf board). I've tried expressPCB and looked at Eagle, but they're designed for etching a board - not as helpful as I'd hoped. I want one that allows you to easily create a schematic, generate netlists, lay out your parts, and create connections. ExpressPCB does this, but it is missing something I would really really like - the ability to view the reverse side of the board (for when you're wiring the board). What do you use? Do you like it? What is it missing? Oh yeah, and I don't want to pay anything, either. I'm cheap!

New site layout?!

Well, i got to work this morning, and went on to check ibles, and i get hit with a paper wallet, i just checked it, and ive found a new layout, and a 'customise' feature! Also, i am able to create a new topic inside of safari instead of having to use firefox! What does everyone think to it? Personally i love the customize feature, it lets me put in direct links to where i want to go. But i must say i miss the drop down box feature, especially on the 'submit' link And i preffered the old location of the links (in the orange band) - I never use the 'categories' It does seem to look a bit squashed up top, (as a graphic designer its a bit unpleasing) But overall, i like the new style!

Contest Layout and more

The latest changes are mostly around the layouts and inner workings of contests.  We've arranged all the contest information in tabs on one page, minimizing the work you need to do to find out all the contest details.  We also made some backend changes to allow the contest manager a bit more flexibility in how the contest looks, especially for contests with sponsors. Additionally, we have published for the first time our detailed Privacy Policy.  There's a lot of detail there but the important bit is about halfway down: "Instructables will not rent or sell potentially personally-identifying and personally-identifying information to anyone." We've always had that policy internally, but now it's published and official.  It's linked on every page, in the footer, along with the other "About Us" links. Finally, we've done a bit more tweaking of the header - avid Answerers will be pleased to note, we took your advice and returned the Answers link to the top level navigation.  Also we're trying out having the search box just up under the login bits, to save a little vertical space.

Layout change in instructable?

I don't know if this is a bug or a new feature and I've only seen it in one instructable so far ( The secondary images are not smaller and are interspersed with text.  For example in step 2 there are 3 large images.  Is this a new format? If so I like it, how do I make mine look like that? or is this just a unique author/instructable?

Posted by ChrysN 8 years ago  |  last reply 8 years ago

Go back to the old layout.

I've noticed that in the attempts websites make to become more and more advanced, they always somehow mess up and make their layout WORSE than the last one.  The one we had before was good.  The one before that was better.  Same thing for any other site.  Google has had the same layout for who knows how long, I respect them for that.  They made a simple interface, clearly laid out buttons, and they left out all the garbage.  When the stats and related ibles were on the right of the instructable, it centered the instructable currently being viewed on the screen which was good for my eyes.  I don't know why you guys decided to change it, it was fine the way it was before. Just my honest opinion here... Update: Thanks for taking my advice guys!

Site layout and taging problems

Today i've noticed that the bottom of the page has been thrown back to the late 90's in the way its showing displaying. The whole site layout has suddenly changed it little ways. What once use to be buttons are now hyper links. Are you in the middle of a site update here? The discussion tab in your profile view has also changed. Almost like its trying to show the recent comments in 2 different ways. Every once in a while when i try to change tabs in the profile page it gives me a pop up saying the site is having trouble. I have to say this HTML throwback look isn't working for me.

Posted by mpilchfamily 6 years ago  |  last reply 6 years ago

Layout and page down function

The banner or top frame is enormous.  Why?  When I'm reading the instructable I admit I have the zoom enlarged.  the problem is the banner enlarges.  Now it occupies about 25-35% of the vertical space.  Why am I seeing this thing when I hit page down?  There's absolutely nothing of value on that banner.  Most of us (unless we have zero short term memory) don't need to see this space wasting thing.  Why not have an "opt out" option for it?  Give your readers a choice.  Readers like choices.  When I use Page Down using Firefox on Win7 it doesn't work accurately.  It goes too far so I'm missing a line or 2.  This has been like this for years.  Its because of that banner.  This happens often on many websites.  ----------------------- PDF downloads are nice but an HTML download would be far more useful as then the line could have an adjustable wrap width.  With the PDF the image size is locked.  This is very restricting and so last century.  Consider an HTML download  (minus that space wasting banner...duh) and that would preserve formatting and allow good user control.  ----------------------- You have one of the most informative and useful websites on the planet.  You should be proud of it.  I hope you are because its well deserved.  So now lets get it functioning more logically!

Not crazy about the new picture layout.

It's been a few days now & I've viewed quite a few things in that time both on my laptop & mobile and having given it some thought and a few days to get used to it I have to say that the new picture layout really does not tick the boxes for me. I can understand the desire to improve the layout where possible & I can understand wanting to show off the pictures at their best but it has been done at the cost of ease of use of the site. it works fine on 'ibles with only two or three pictures to a step but what seems to have been forgotten is that many 'ibles have a large number of pictures to each step meaning that the viewer has to scroll through all the pictures before getting to any text then scroll all the way back up again to refer to any pictures being described, on some 'ibles this may not be a problem but on many others I predict it will. The reason for the change has been given that "We wanted something that emphasizes your images in a format that is a bit more contemporary." which is all very well but I feel that the end result may well be that many images get overlooked altogether in an effort to get to the actual text of the 'ible & some 'ibles may simply get clicked away from because viewer's get tired of scrolling through image upon image to find out just what the 'ible is really about, I know I have already been guilty of this on at least one occasion in the last few days. I guess if the layout remains members will have to bear this in mind & decide on that basis how many images they will use but I can see 'ibles that have large numbers of images particularly in the introduction getting fewer repeat visits than when we could simply click & choose the images we wanted to view in greater detail. If I were able to choose between the old layout & the new one both to view & create 'ibles  I'm afraid I have to say that based on what I have seen over the last few days I would choose the old layout. i appreciate that HQ is constantly looking for ways to improve the site & a lot of hard work & thought is put into these things but on this occasion for me at least it has had a negative impact.

New "Contemperary" Layout of Pics Doesn't Quite Work

On I devices, such as the iPad I am using currently, the new picture layout gets messed up. I can't quite describe it but it takes a while to load, and if you tap certain pics it opens up another window and sometimes takes you to the users profile page. I would highly appreciate, along with others, if there was a option in the profile (like the option for all steps on one page) to be able to switch to the older version. I myself liked it much more than the new layout, because I can choose which picture I want to see, and not have to see them all. Thanks! MackeFeet

New profile layouts -- good things and bad things

So Rachel deployed the server updates this morning. There are a lot of nice features, but at least one bug(?) and a couple of things I wish were different...Like the bigger patches :-)Like the icon format for my I'bles, favorites, and groups (on the /member/... version)Like the no-longer-present "(0)" in the INBOX link at the top of my pageDon't like the no-longer-present "(1)" "(2)" etc. in the INBOX link at the top of the pagePossible bug: Why are there "short lines" in the icon layout of my I'bles? Why don't the icons have the "featured" or "winner" banners?Would like the icon format on the /you/ page as wellWould like the "icon vs. long-line" toggle buttons for both viewOverall, the changes are light and subtle, but give things a look more consistent with the rest of the site.

New PDF Layouts on the way

Hi all, Just a quick heads up for pro members: in our continuing efforts this year to add value to pro memberships, we're releasing changes shortly that should make the PDF downloads much simpler to download, and much more attractive and readable once you do. They feature two-column layout for more readable text, and accommodate much more of the formatting that makes each Instructable unique. To begin with, these new PDF layouts will only appear for newly generated PDFs. As we receive your feedback on them and iron out any kinks, we'll expand to include more projects, replacing the old PDF layouts over time. Big changes like this always come with some unpredictable parts, so if you notice anything that's a little off, please let us know! ~Devs

My Feedback on the Instructables Layout

The new layout of the website totally rocks!! The homepage is nifty and easy to use. I just love the huge search bar in the middle. The background suits the website perfectly, and I love the automatic typing when you first arrive at the webpage! The bar at the top now has you click on it instead of rolling over. This solves my original problem I mentioned in the forums before of the roll over function not working on an iPad. I love every bit of the new layout, great job Instructables team! :)

I created them from the eagle files provided from the Arduino website and exported each layer in monochrome with help from this Instructable. Hello All. I'm trying to etch a board created in Eagle.  2 Questions: When I export the image, the "plastic part" of the pin headers on my board are showing up in the exported image. Is this image really "doable" using a toner transfer method due to the thin clearances and trace widths? Exports of the schematic and board images are attached. Thanks! Cam

General layout all a bit Pete Tongue

The general layout seems to be all over the place :-( I have noticed that the list of something that includes the Kit Design Challange! on the home page is layed out over the How to add EL wire to a coat tab. the explore channels also keeps converting itself into a list that goes straight down going off the page. The search is over the Robotics - ACE Quick Fixes area and is not shown as the search. The notes on the images are not in the correct place, they have been moved over to the right. Win XP with IE8, tried with compatibility mode on with no difference. Also tried IE8 on Win7, also on Xoom with Android whatsit browser. And when I went into competitions and view entries I get logged out, when you try and vote it gives you the popup to log in, enter details and it takes you back to the competition main page. How can I win if I can't keep voting for myself??? ;-) Erm, forget I mentioned that last bit....... Other than that, top job!

New layout of comments meta-data seems compressed and cluttered

I don't think I like the tweaks that were done to the comments format.  The user's avatar, date/time stamp, and username are all mashed together with no spacing between them.  I liked having the date/time in the upper right corner, but I know that a lot of users missed the information (leading to silly bumps and year+ late replies).  Perhaps you could do something like: [Avatar] wrote on : with some spaces to keep the formatting nice?

Two bugs with Instructables layout update -- Step 1 is inescapable

In a recent post, I mentioned that the presentation of Instructables had changed slightly.  Instead of the first ten steps in a "table of contents", now you see the Intro and Step 1 in full.  It turns out that there are two bugs associated with this change. First, Step 1 seems to  always show up, whether you've viewing the Intro, or viewing Step 17. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  This has been fixed. Second, when you click on the links for either the Intro or Step 1,  you see the same thing, those two steps together in full. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  Actually, if you click on the Step 1 icon in this case, the page jump-scrolls to the start of the Step 1 text.  This is a feature, not a bug. There's no problem with "View All Steps" (for paid users).  That behaves the same way it always has. UPDATE 17 Aug 2010:  "View All Steps" now uses jump-scrolling.  If you click on any of the step icons at the top of the I'ble, your browser will scroll to the start of that step on the same page, rather than loading a new page.    This is a feature, not a bug.

New/swapped columns in Instructables -- restored

On Monday 8 Feb 2010, I wrote: I'm not sure that I like the swapped page layout -- with the author info, staff feature options, and so forth on the left side.  Since English is read left-to-right, this means that administrative info is given "top billing", while the actual Instructable content is relegated to second place.  It also means that some of that content is cut off of the viewer's display, depending on how they have chosen to size their browser window.  The fact that I'bles makes assumptions about browser size and shape is, of course, wrong in the first place, but the new layout makes that wrongness even more obvious to the casual user. UPDATE:  Tuesday morning, 9 Feb 2010, the administrative info is back on the right side of the page.

PM Formatting

It's been asked before, many times, but still has not happened. Can we please have formatting preserved in PMs? I've had a number of long PMs recently, and all very hard to read because they were in a single block of text. Yes, I know we can type in code ourselves, but I'm on my iPod right now, and a single line break in a PM takes 10 key-strokes!!

Where do I put my latest knitting / soldering / home renovation project?

There have been a lot of changes here at, and we're about all of the great feedback we've received. While you're still getting used to the new categories and channels, take some time to poke around and familiarize yourself with what goes where. Living, for example, can mean a lot of things - recipes, sewing, finances, health & beauty, travel, and a whole lot more. Workshop is another great category to browse through.  We have new home renovation, metalworking and tools channels, just to name a few! So while you're cranking out more awesome new projects, and scoping all of the great new stuff, take some time to look around. ***My secret insider tip is to click the Browse link at the top of the page next to the Robot.  Then, when you click on a category listed on the left, it will give you a list of all the new channels therein! Happy hunting, and as always, feel free to contact us with your questions and praise.

Layout changes not mentioned in Rachel's update

There were two fairly substantial (from the user's perspective) changes that Rachel forgot to mention in her Site Update post. First, by moving the search box and button up to the masthead, they have also eliminated the old-style "graphical search" interface completely.  It doesn't even show up as an alternative when a Google-driven search is made.  This has already led to two user complaints (here and here). Could the old-style interfce at least be put back on the search results page? UPDATE 17 Aug 2010: The "graphical search" link is back on the search-results page. Second, the interface when you first read an Instructable has been cleaned up substantially. All the steps, with photos and hover-text, are still there, but instead of a truncated table of contents (only the first ten steps), now the full intro and first step are shown immediately. It'll take a bit of getting use to for the old-timers, but I think it's a better interface for new users. Thanks to Rachel for getting these updates out, and especially for answering (pun intended) some of the requests from the community!

New contest page layout; no recent, popular or views buttons

I just noticed the new layout for the contest pages, and I think they look great. However, one thing I noticed was that you can no longer sort entries by views, featured, etc. I miss that; you could see how successful the instructables were, and it gave you the chance to see more than just the most recent entries at a glance. Is there any chance of bringing back the sorting feature?

Tempted to leave instructables just because of the new layouts

I may have only been here for 2 years but this site is changing a bit too much for my tastes. In those 2 years most of the major changes have been pretty recent. Why they haven't implemented legacy views yet baffles me. Or allowing us to customize our own personal layout. By personal layout I mean that each person can customize how the site looks to HIM OR HER. If they implemented that I would be willing to put up with the bugs and glitches it would cause just for the fact that it pleases my eye. What they seem to be doing is copying facebook's style. This absolutely sickens me. I HATE facebook and the only reason I got it was to see just how bad it is. The layout for facebook form over function. It is needlessly over complicated  I am a function over form guy. I bet most of the people here are function over form too.  Don't be a facebook. If you do I will take my 10$ worth of advertising else where. Maybe if a couple thousand leave you will get it.

Occasional page layout bug -- giant hole in banner-ad section

I've noticed this happening occasionally for the past few days.  The space where the "banner ad" appears, between the masthead and actual useful content, gets made extra large.  There's still a normal sized banner ad in place, but a lot of blank space below that.  A page refresh usually gets rid of it (and changes the banner ad).

Instructables layout is all messed up on my browser-bug report

Recently when I have gone onto instructables, the layout has been all messed up. First of all, the toolbar that is black that says "Share what you make" and has links to techshop and others is blocking the drop down log-in list. I try to log-on, but the button is not accessable for reasons unknown. All other drop down lists (like "you", "contests", "explore", etc.) are blocked by the bar too. The "favorite" button and "follow" button are not clickable. There is just a yellow block smaller than usual next to the number of followers a user has. When I go to a user profile the instructables on the page are enlarged and stuck together. The views, date member joined, and others that are usually at the top are down the side. On the contests page the column with the description of the contest is empty at the top, then the description is at the very bottom of the page. Operating system: Windows Vista computer Version: [ORJ-100000031] Browser: Internet Explorer It is all over the website, mostly buttons and dropdown menus and lists. I don't know if it is just my computer or if it has to do with the browser.
