Question concerning legality

Hey guys, quick question, I figured this would be a good place to ask it. I have a setup that allows me to record streamed music from, say, Spotify (yes, this is legal, as long as I don't use the recordings commercially) and basically get free mp3 files. If I wanted to use one of these recordings non-commercially in a video on Instructables or anywhere else, would it be legal? Danke schon in advance to any help you guys can give!

Legal and copyrights confusion.

Hey everyone, I love instructables and I've been working on my own tutorial for the last few weeks. I am not far from publishing the instructables. Recently it came to my attention that I might have some legal/copyright issues. I built my DIY using some parts I took down from other products that are still on sale. One of these parts is copyrighted but not patented. I was wondering, due to the DIY and instructables nature if that would be an issue for me? I am not reselling the DIY or pushing people to do the same as me and even give indication to future makers about how to obtain that part legally. I cite all the sources of the original product from which I borrowed the parts. Would it be ok if I publish my instructables like this or should I avoid talking at all about the "borrowed" parts? Also, if a newspaper or magazine wanted to publish an article about my instructables, would granting them sole publishing rights interfere with using the "borrowed parts" that I talk about above? Would I even be able at all to grant them these rights, given the general terms of the CC license (Non-commercial share-alike)? Does this CC license allow anyone to publish an article about my instructables without my written consent (print and online), so long as they cite the sources? Thanks in advance for helping me out, I'm a bit confused!

Stratasys hack, legal??

Hi , I  think of making an instructable about how to hack  3D printer cartridges, so they can easily be refilled with cheap material. I got an old Stratasys Dimension BST 3D printer from 2005 or something and these printers need chip protected filament cartridges to operate- and these cartridges are quite expensive (~200$ per kg filament...) There is a way to hack these cartridges using a small arduino based programmer to refill them with generic ABS and HIPS, each about 20$ per kg. So its 200$ vs. 20$ , and 15 minutes of work. And I would like to make a small instructable about how to do that. But I don`t know whether this is legal. My question: whats the policy of Instructables here? And if Stratasys starts legal action (I seriously doubt that, because the printers are out of production) who is liable, would that be me or Instructables?

Legalizing hobby distilling

Would you take a minute to contact your US Representatives about HR-2903 and US senators about S-1562?  It's a pair of bills that would enable small-time and hobby folk to distill small amounts of alcohol legally. Here's a link to the legislation itself (below).  There's a nice executive summary with a few bullet points.           https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/house-bill/2903 Here's a link to contact information for your representatives:           https://www.govtrack.us/congress/members/ Oh, you need your full ZIP code to contact most of these politicians.  Look yours up here:           https://tools.usps.com/go/ZipLookupAction!input.action YOU CAN DO IT!

Am I A Reverend ? ( UK only question ). Answered

Hello, I was given this certificate as a Christmas present. I thought it was just a novelty but was assured that I could, if I wished, now sign legal forms/change my bankbook/change my passport to utilise the prefix Rev, because this is an officially recognized church. I was overjoyed but very, very skeptical. I Googled but can only find one site under The International Church Of Atheism, which is  very basic and without contact details. http://internationalchurcho.fatcow.com/ Reading around the subject it seems that this kind of thing is legal in the US of A ( such as the First Church of Atheism ) and even allows you to perform weddings but I can't find any useful info on how much weight this carries in the UK. I know that it will not give legal status to performing marriages or any heavyweight duties here but I do like the idea of having Rev. on my driving licence; would anyone know if it at least allows that ? Does anybody with actual legal knowledge know ? No guesses or opinions please, I've found enough of those while Googling. Thank you for your help. Rev. Friend Of Humanity. UPDATE After Kiteman's comment I feel that I should state that I Photoshopped my real name out in order to illustrate this question. And just to clarify: I am asking if I can legally use this prefix on my passport etc. I do not have any plans to use it in any practical way such as performing/witnessing marriages.

Can I be held liable if someone injures themselves as a result of trying to duplicate my project ?

Example: I post a project of mine that explains an improved way to inflate water bottle rockets with co2 cartridges and the specific parts they will need and can get from their local hardware store.Someone then follows my instructions and is injured as a result of not following instructions, not taking the proper safety precautions,or just an unforeseen potential for injury that was overlooked by myself. Question? Can I be held legally responsible for this injury as I was the one who posted the project in question?

Is it legal to make mods for Minecraft?

I am a Minecraft modder, and I have a youtube channel teaching other people how to make mods for Minecraft (www.youtube.com/henrythecoder). Recently, youtube has offered me to participate in "revenue sharing", where basically youtube puts ads on my videos, and in turn I get paid a small amount of money per view. However, in order for me to qualify for this, I have to certify that I own the rights to everything I do in the video, and that what I am doing is legal. Thus, I need to find out if it is actually legal to make mods for Minecraft. For those of you who may not know Minecraft very well, it's a game with a very large modding community. I don't know if the makers of Minecraft "officially" support people making mods (Minecraft isn't open source), but they certainly make no effort whatsoever to stop it. In the next update of Minecraft, the makers of the game have also revealed that the game may include built in mod support (making it easier to install mods). Anybody know the answer?

We have been using potato cannons in a BSA camporee and someone just told us that these cannons are illegal. When they are used they are in a safe place, like a rifle range. Pirate Bay Legal Responses

I love the Pirate Bay's responses to threats of legal action.Since they're based in Sweden, home of the Pirate Party1, their responses can get pretty entertaining. Here's part of their response to a takedown notice from EA:Hello and thank you for contacting us. We have shut down the website in question.Oh wait, just kidding. We haven't, since the site in question is fully legal. Unlike certain other countries, such as the one you're in, we have sane copyright laws here. But we also have polar bears roaming the streets and attacking people :-(.And selection from the response to Warner Bros. et al:We are well aware of the fact that The Pirate Bay falls outside the scope of the DMCA - after all, the DMCA is a US-specific legislation, and TPB is hosted in the land of vikings, reindeers, Aurora Borealis and cute blonde girls.> I make this declaration conscientiously, believing it to be true and> correct, and in accordance with the laws of each of the countries> listed> above. I am aware and agree that the contents of this statement may> be relied upon against me in any court or arbitration proceeding. So it's OK with you if we bring legal action against you for a) claiming that we host any infringing files, which we don't,b) claiming that DMCA has any relation what so ever to the activites of the site, andc) making my eyes bleed by writing in UPPERCASE, underlined, and red text?Good stuff. Read and enjoy.1 I heard Rickhard Falkvinge speak at OSCON this past year- the talk was clear and eloquent, and he's quite engaging. I could barely suppress the urge to immediately hand him a donation for the Piratpartiet.

How does saying you are not liable make you not liable?

A whole bunch of instructables want to go out of their way to say "I'm not liable". Is that all there is to legal liability, just say you're not liable and that makes you not liable? Or is that just sort of a 'hocus pocus don't sue me', no legal ramifications whatsoever?

What are the restirctions/requirements to play with model rockets in your country?

I wanted to start again with an old hobby of mine and buy some rocket motors and one or two easy rocket models. Just for the fun of seeing things to fly high and come down slow you know? Depending on which country you can call your residency now you might luagh about what happened to me: I went to first model building shop I could find nearby in my Yellow pages. Of course that had no clue about rockets, not even remote controlled cars as they only build build models for multiplayer board games. Next shop was selected a bit better with a focus on all things remote controlled. Here I was told that only a few shops actually sell any rocket related stuff due to the tough legal requirements of storage, handling and selling - WTF?? (excuse the language!) But at least I got an address for a shop that would be abe to help me figuring it all out. Last but not least I finally entered a shop filled with all sorts of model rockets, from simple to realist replicas of Saturn 5 engines. "Can I see your permit please?" "Do you have a club memebrship card stating you can buy engines?" "Can you provide the required details on your storage facilities and fire control system?" That were just a few of the questions thrown at me when I went to the checkout with 3 little rockets asking on where to find the engines and ingintion kits..... Turns out here in AU it is far easier to obtain a firearm and license than to get what you need to shoot a plastic rocket 100 or 200m high in the air.... Without being a member of a recognised model rocket club you won't have access to a legal launch area. Without your club permit you can't obtain a license required to buy a model rocket engine - yes we are taking about these paper tubes every kid uses.... Without the license, club membership and the required club permits you will never (legally) buy a rocket motor... To make things worse the 4 clubs I contacted only supply motors they buy to their members, at about 20% above market price of course and you won't get a card to buy your own until you are a member for at least three years... I already know in Germany and the US things are quite different but I would still like to know how exactly it works in your contry or if your face similar problems outside US and EU territory.

Legal/moral issue about a contest entry.

I am planning on using a previously made papercraft in one of my upcoming projects for a contest entry. I believe in giving credit where credit is due, and I was going to gain permission to use this papercraft in my project from the original creator.  Unfortunately, the site where it was originally posted, and any potential communication with the creator, has ceased to exist.   I was planning on using this papercraft in a similar fashion quite a few years ago, sent and email, and recieved permission, but because it has been so long, I was going to do it again. Is it alright to use the papercraft (giving credit to the author) in my contest entry?  What should I do?

80.000 nose dive autopiloted

Hi all, I'm planning to drop a glider from a weather balloon from about 80.000 feet. I want to let the airplane gain speed and then glide to the launching place or at least as close as possible to it. The idea is to do a nose dive (nose heavy) until enough speed is reached and slowly turn the airplane towards the launching site. Is this achievable with ardupilot software? I'm already sending a bunch of instruments like gyro, gps and magnetometer and I could use their readings on a Raspberry pi to run ardupilot , at least until video range is available to switch to manual. If possible I want to avoid buying the autopilot hardware 1. Any idea if this could be achievable the way I'm going about it? 2. Is this even legal? (I know it has been done already but I'm planning on doing this many times) Thank you in advance for any answer backed up by facts.

Torrenting a movie you own (Legality)? Answered

So, i have been wondering this for a while now, and thought to ask here before I did something stupid and got the feds at my door :) Is it legal to torrent a movie I own? For example, I have an old copy of the Incredibles, but since it was released in 2004, the movie has seen its fair share of use, and at the moment is too scratched to be played (Unfortunately I did not rip a backup...).  So under these circumstances, would it be legal to torrent the movie file, as I have the actual, physical disk of the movie? What about VHS tapes (got my fair share of those). Getting these on my computer would just be some $70 software/recording equipment... it would be faster and cheaper to download them instead of getting shoddy quality off of a 15 year old VHS.  What about for a disc that has been solen? We had our car broken into at one point, and got some 10 DVDs stolen out of it (around 8 of which didnt have a backup)... I would like to be able to get those back, legally, without having to spend $150 re-buying movies already purchased...
