I think I am starting to really lose it....

I was building the "Evasive Beeping Thing" from Make. A search through all of my "parts" finally got me resistors and caps of approximately the correct values I wanted *even though they are not specified in the article :-( ". After nearly a fortnight, I finally was ready to test it. hooked up a nine volt battery, and.....nothing. Fearing the worse, I touched the 555 IC...and it was hot as blazes. 2 days of inspecting the circuit and trying to make sure no shorts were occurring, I finally gave up and unsoldered the whole thing. I then through together a quick 555 timer circuit using an ic socket, in order to test if I had destroyed my IC. That didn't work at first (but just in case, I tried a 555 I knew was good, and that did work). Just before throwing out the assumed defunct 555, I looked at it under a brighter light (and low and behold, on the IC was written in very small worn type: 741. It was an op-amp ! I could have screamed....*sigh*. Oh well, at least I got a tester out of the deal LOL *sigh*

Bug? Instructable losing views.

One of my instructables, decided to lose 100 views or so on it's own on both the 'ible stat and my published page, for no apparent reason.  I only noticed as gmjhowe and I are in a views race so I've been paying particular attention to them but it's definitely and odd problem.

Tips for exercising?

Since I'm entering a new school for the 2010-2011 school year, ( which means 3 schools will combine into one) I thought I might lose weight. Me, a bit tubby at 92.5 pounds, (As of August 17, 2010) So I decided to run. Everyday, I do half a mile running, and half a mile walking. I started 3 days ago, and I've already seen improvement. I was 93.5 lbs after 1 run. After a bit of cool down, I do sit ups. I've got my MP3 player going (The Rocky Theme-ULTIMATE MOTIVATOR) as I run. Any tips? I don't do sports, and I try not to eat after 8:00. I've got running shoes and a appropriate outfit. I'd like to see what everybody can say to me. -NYPA

Voltage Stabilizer Efficiency Loss (Extra power consumption)

Hello All, I am using an 1KVA Voltage stabilizer for my Fridge. The power quality is really poor here in India, and these things are mandatory. I learnt the lesson hard way :-(.... Well that aside, i would like to know what would be the power loss or Extra consumption these devices use when regulating power. Actually,i could use a general lecture on how Stabilizers work!

Drill Torque Loss

Hi, I am having some trouble with torque loss from a drill motor and gearbox I harvested for a project. I followed the steps in this instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/Hacking-Drills-CheapPowerful-GearboxMotors-for-/) to get the motor and gearbox. I then hooked it up to a motorshield and an arduino. Originally the drill (Rigid 18v Cordless) States that it can deliver close to 500 lb-in of torque. However when I hook it up to my apparatus I am able to stop the spinning with my hand. I use PWM to control the speed but upping the speed still does not produce the required torque. If anyone has any ideas as to why it dropped in torque I would be very appreciative. Thank you in advanced.

LEDs Driveway Solar Setup

Help with LEDs (2 Part Question- Answer what you can) I got a reel of 5 Meters SMD 3528 Epistar LEDs Power Source: 12 Volts DC Wattage: 60 Watts Power Consumption (W/m):18 Watts / Meter LED Chip Model: SMD 5630 LEDs Number/M: 60 pcs / Meter How many Amps needed in a charge controller? Solar Cells Average Power (Watts): 2.6 Wp Average Current (Amps): 5.2 Imax Average Voltage (Volts): 0.5 Vmax Do I need to wire the solar cells 3 in series to reach 15.6 volts (Calculated loss so not 12v) and then parallel to reach 60 watts for the LEDs? (I plan to have around 70 watts just for incase and rely on the charge controller to lower voltage to 12V.) ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ (I am using a standard car battery. An old one that has lost a lot of juice, but I tested the LEDs on it and it still works.) Is this okay? Am I doing things right? Thank you all for your help!!! :o)

Automotive Power Loss Annunciator

The photo shows what I'm dealing with: a sound module ($2.50 including shipping from China) and an automotive auxiliary power cord (cigarette lighter.) The sound module has a "play" button at the end of the yellow wires. The "black box" has two tasks:                 - detect loss of power on the 12V cord                 - momentarily connect the two yellow wires (as if the button switch had been pressed.) So far I’ve been told that some sort of relay and a timer could be involved, but since I’m not a Electrical Engineer, I don’t know the specifics. I know that in the automotive world, there are big, bulky relays, but I'm wondering if there are relays in the integrated circuit world? I really need specifics like part numbers and circuit diagrams. Thanking you in advance for your help.

power loss in battery chargers...USB

A transformer, being a pair of electromagnets, such that it reduces the voltage of household power to whatever voltage your battery powered device needs, will cost you somethin if its plugged into the wall, even if yoour phone, laptop, etc isn't plugged in. but it seems that these 5v usb chargers are too small to contain a transformer. I dont think they get warm when they are idly plugged in.  I imagine they may just have a rectifier and zener diode. Is that the case?  Do they waste power when left in an outlet?

Adding more speakers to hi fi stereo?!

Hi, i was just wondering whether anyone knew of anything that will allow me to add more speakers to my sony hi-fi without losing in volume. my stereo only allows me to add 2 speakers, and i have seen that you can get stereo speaker splitter allowing to add more speakers but i don't know whether one of those leads to a loss in volume aswell. I was wondering whether there is anything like a booster/amplifier to prevent the loss (almost like an aerial booster for TV's). Any help would be great thanks! Dan

Comparative Environmental Friendliness of Internal Combustion and Electric Vehicles

I would like to know which type of vehicle is more environmentally friendly. Electric and hybrid vehicles are gaining in popularity and they are touted as green, but they clearly require more energy and resources in their manufacture due to their battery packs, rare earth metals and electric motors. On the other hand, traditional internal combustion vehicles require fewer resources to manufacture. However, I imagine that it converts fossil fuels to energy less efficiently than electrics because the conversion process is smaller, unlike in large scale power plants (not sure if this is true). Electric === More resources to create (-) Power Plant (Generates energy efficiently?) (+) -> Power Lines (A: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,-,- Gas === Fewer Resources to create (+) Combustion Motor (Generates energy inefficiently? B: energy loss) (-) -> Motion +,- I'm pretty terrible at explaining this, but is the energy loss at A or B worse when comparing the two systems? For electrics to be viable, it must offset the higher creation cost. Just wondering which one is actually more "green" when you factor in production (disregard cost of transporting fossil fuels to gas stations and power plants).

Dual boot

I am looking towards creating a dual boot scenario on my computer (XP, and Ubuntu) and I am in need of a bit of assistance. Some background and foundation: Present OS = XP SP2The main partition is NTFS, however the "backup" partition is FAT(16 or 32, I am not sure)Now, to my main question: I realize I can partition this further so I can have a dual boot situation, but I am worried about losses that may occur. I haven't had much time lately to read up on the process, but I have seen warnings about loss of data files, etc. and my being cautious to a fault, I haven't proceeded any further in my quest. So, what precautions should I take, and what is going to be the process I need to follow to get to where I want to be?

RIP Sir Patrick Moore

The greatest British populariser of astronomy and space science, Sir Patrick Moore died today at 89. I would suggest that nearly 100% of British astronomers were influenced by Moore and his TV programme, The Sky at Night - of which, Sir Patrick was the longest serving presenter of any TV series anywhere. It is hard to imagine any more iconic figure in science media than Patrick Moore. A great loss.

Sculptural Crochet Primer

Here SuperNaturale features a curiosity cabinet of crochet figures, thus illustrating the basic elements which combine to form sculptural crochet.Much like a traditional Wunderkammer, the pieces are divided into subgroups, each of which explores a certain variable.I'm struck by the beauty obtained by using simple stitches and one color to make a striking, strangely biologically-evocative piece of artcraft. It's obviously left me with a loss for words.

maintain initial and end position stepper motor without energy loss

Hi all, In a project of automated vertically folding curtain I have the problem that whatever the position of my curtain (8 kg) is, the motor is always drawing current. Let's say the curtain stays for 8 hours in the same position, then during these 8 hours the motor is wasting lots of energy. Is there a method/mechanical system which can be used to make sure the motor only uses energy ("works") if the position of the curtain has to change? Thanks in advance

ONE of my new projects requires a DOME: I need a simple way to make one. Any Help?

I need a dome, and it need not be really big.  It DOES need to be made of a thin enough material to have multiple hole poked or drilled into it (fairly SMALL holes actually).  I am at a loss as to what to use.  It needs to be opaque (even if the light beneath it is very bright).  I would like to create a kind of a planetarium in my room, but have it mobile so I can move it into another room if need be.

50 LED Light String

Im trying to wire a string of 50 LED's that are 200mA each. They are all connected in one long string, end to end (in series, I think). I'm having trouble trying to figure out what kind of power source and resistors to use and how to wire the resistors in. In the past I've wired 1 or 2 LED's to a 12 volt power source using a couple of resistors in parallel, but this project is much bigger and I'm worried about current loss and the very high voltage needed to power a string of 50 2 or 4 volt LED's in series... is that like, 100000 volts, or what?? Any guidance would be appreciated.

15" LCD monitor. What to do?

So, I got this old ThinkPad 600, I really want to take the monitor off and make some use of it, but Im not quite sure what to do. So far, what I've thought is Digital Picture Frame. Possible screen for my Xbox 360? (Good idea?) Another monitor for my PC but I kind want to just use it for widgets like time, RAM usage, calendar and organizer. and extra window space. (good idea?) Other than that, I'm not sure. It's not often I get to do something with a monitor, so I'm at a loss of what to do. Any suggestions would be great.

How to make your own fat optical fiber for solar device?

I'm prototyping a solar energy device, and need to transport a concentrated light beam a couple of meters without loss or, ideally, burning anyone's hand off. I was thinking of some kind of 'total internal reflection' medium, such as glass, but it needs to be cheap and easy to make/find, and it would be great if it had at least a little flexibility. Is there any way to make your own? Some kind of gel, or crystal, or maybe water if it wouldn't attenuate or absorb too much of the energy? Failing that, is there some existing material I could wrench out the back of something? Cheers, Daniel.

Excellent Forum, Glad I Joined

I just recently joined as a Pro member, but I've received a lot out of Instructables over the years. The last "prank" instructable that I participated in were those cell phone zappers. I don't know what kind of experience or success rate other members had with this, but I just wanted to die laughing at times when in stores, doctors offices, etc..., and someone would either call or receive a call, and 'ye olde zapper' went into action, and I'd estimate a good 90+% of the time, the call was terminated very shortly because of a dropped [or loss of] signal. My unit was rigged  up in a book, so it was really drew no attention.

Instructable Request - Commercial foil/wrap hanger

I would like something like this for my kitchen at home. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000YOM6O/ref=asc_df_B0000YOM6O1514313?ie=UTF8∣=A2OXZP811GUDWF&tag;=dealtmp3666-20&linkCode;=asn&creative;=395105&creativeASIN;=B0000YOM6O I did a search of the site and I was unable to find something like it. I would rather not pay $166 for something that could likely be made at home with little effort. I would settle for a hack of a different product. My goal really is to get the foil off the counter. I know I would be able to reuse the cutter that's on the box. past that  I'm at a loss

SF's Hybrid Buses are Easy to Shut Off

This is an odd one! Apparently, kids have been playing around with the hybrid buses as they roll along -- by turning them off. The off switch is apparently just under a unlocked panel on the side of the bus."When that happens, the drivers can't accelerate, they lose radio contact with dispatchers and the interior lights on the buses go out. The power loss does not affect the brakes."They say that they're working on locking the compartments -- which seems like a good start -- as well as increasing patrol among the areas, as other attacks were common.Chronicle via Gizmondo

do I need to isolate a negative ion generator?

I am looking to build a negative ion generator based spark gap... I need to limit dielectric loss, and need to use 8" of small gauge wire to and from the switch to turn it on. do I need to isolate the switch electronically from the rest of the circuit? if so, would a reed relay do the trick? if I use a reed relay, could I run it from the same power source, in parallel, or do I need to isolate power sources as well? my setup will be slightly similar to the Electrifried shoe diagram below. (no, that's not the project)
