Bug while searching main page

Hello,  I am using Google Chrome 26.0.1410.43 m on Windows XP I was on the Home page trying to search when you type in the search bar the characters are invisible. They are only visible if you highlight them. Sorry if I am a little short to the point but I am half asleep.  Thanks Conrad

Search engine @ main page

Hi I'm using 1. a laptop, ubuntu 12.04 LTS, 2. Chrome vers. 36.0.1985.143 3-5. The last couple of days I haven't been able to use the big search engine at the main page with all its suggestions. As soon as I click the box to enter my search terms, I'm directly transported to whatever suggestion is coming up, such as beer or the alphabet. This was something I could do at the latest last week. The positive part is that I found the small one in the upper right corner after several years as a member. Got kind off invisible with the main one being so big. Keep up the ever so great job You're doing! Kind regards Oscar

Closed contests not being featured.

I was wondering why closed contests are no longer on the front page, since the most recent format change. Don't some f them still need members to vote for winners? I think members should be encouraged to check out the entries.

Firefox won't work with pages on main Instructables page

I have Firefox 3.6 on WinXP. I have Javascript enabled but not Java. On the main Ible page are rows of Ibles. Each row is a category which shows 4 Ibls, followed by some page numbers, and a ">>" button for Next Page. Whenever I clikc a page number, or the >> Next Page button that row disappears. Sometimes the same Ibles appear in that row again even though multiple page number buttons are displayed. This function used to work, but stopped working about 2-4 weeks ago. Any ideas how to fix this? I have no other problems with any other website or forum. I do have Adblock but that only blocks images matching certain servers. I also have Flashblock. Featured instructable never made the main page?

Do all featured instructables go on the main page? usually, when I get a feature, It is featured right away, and for the next day or so, I see it on the main page. I posted a cutting board a couple days ago that got featured about 24 hours later. The problem is that when it was featured it was too late to go on the main page... Is this common? I get a lot of views while on the main page...

Main photo being cropped on 'explore' pages.

The main photo of an Instructable is being cropped by a few percent at the edges on the 'explore' pages.  The images are fine when the Instructable is clicked to view it, but for myself and others who take photos to fill the whole frame it is annoying to have the edges of the 'content' chopped off.  (I always intend to take a more loosely framed photo as the title image but never seem to remember.) Is this a bug in the image handling or is it done by intent? Edit : I've just realised what's happening - It's cropping to make a square aspect ratio for the thumbnails. Looks like I'll have to compose the photo accordingly.

What is going on with the new format for the different pages?  All I can find is featured "ibles" with large pictures, wheres the zeitgist, recent, popular etc that used to be on the main page of each section (ride, outdoors, offbeat, green, life, etc etc?) Page redirecting problem?

Hey, I'm wondering if anyone else is having this problem.  I use Firefox 3.6.16 at work, and since last Friday have been getting this message on the main index page: The page isn't redirecting properly Firefox has detected that the server is redirecting the request for this address in a way that will never complete.   *   This problem can sometimes be caused by disabling or refusing to accept           cookies. I have all cookies enabled.  I've disabled them, refreshed, logged out, rebooted, and reeneabled in so many combination's that my head now hurts and my computer is dizzy.  I had another tab open to an 'ible, and am able to browse through various forums that way (thus I'm able to post this), but whenever I go to the main index page I get this error.  I tried using Internet Explorer (shudder), but it just gives the ever-helpful "can't connect" standard IE error message.  I haven't tried using FF4 yet (I have that running at home).

Paging through "Your Forum Topics" -- weird page layout

I have been noticing a bug paging through the list of Forum Topic in my account (under "You"). The screen shots below show the "first" ten (most recent) topics, as part of the main page. When I hit [next], I get the second screen shot. Topics 11-20 are up at the very top of the page, and the Istructables banner and rest of my account info is down below! It's just a layout issue, but weird.

Instructable page not centering in Internet Explorer

When I login to Instructables.com the main page comes up OK with content centered on the page. There is a selection of currently featured Instructables showing ready for me to select. When I select one of the individual instructables the page comes up with no left margin at all. All the text is totally left justified. I have looked every where I can thank of to center this page and cannot make anything work to do it. I believe this has been going on for 2 or 3 days. If anyone can help with this I would be very thankful. Oh, by the way I am writing this message on the FoxFire explorer and the problem does not happen on FoxFire. The problem only happens when I use Internet Explorer 9 which is my normal internet access device. Lester

How do I browse popular/recent instructables in all categories?

I just visited the instructables main page, and I wanted to just browse some popular instructables from the last few weeks or so.  However, I can't seem to find a  way to do this.  From what I can tell, the main page seems to force me to browse only within a certain category.  Maybe I'm missing something. How do I look at a list of recent & popular instructables?  Is there a way to browse without having to choose a category first? Thanks!

Main Featured Nav Broken Link (Gardening links to wrong page)

There appears to be an incorrect URL for the "Gardening" section of the top 33 featured channels. Windows 10, Chrome 49.0.2 (problem also occurs in Firefox and seems to be browser-independent) Steps to Reproduce: 1) Visit Instructables.com 2) Click "Explore" (next to the search box) 3) Click "featured" 4) Hover over "everything" 5) From "Top Channels" click "Gardening" (see "navigation" screenshot: http://imgur.com/nMcSTMV) Clicking the link will result in reaching this page: https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-workshop/channel-gardening/ However, that gardening page only has 3 entries and is listed under the "Workshop" category. It seems to be the incorrect result given that the list of top 33 channels is based on the total number of entries in a channel, and the gardening channel under the "Home" category has approximately 5,900 entries as opposed to 3 :) Thus, the correct URL for the "Gardening" link in the Top 33 navigation should be: https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/category-home/channel-gardening/ The location where the link should be updated in the source is line 158 when viewing with the Chrome source viewer (see "source" screenshot: http://imgur.com/v1PMoNc)

Two Bugs With My Profile Page

Alright, I've managed to discover two bugs with my profile page. First off, (as you can see in the picture) In my profile it says I've recieved 2 DIY Patches from other members, but then right below the patches it says that my profile has only one patch on it. Can anyone explain this? One more, when I click on the link where it says "You've Posted 19 Forum Topics" it takes me to a page showing the forum topics I've posted. But when I try to click on page two to see the rest of them it puts me back at my main profile page instead of displaying page two.

Randomly rotate entries in contest pages.

Here's a suggestion for how Instructables are displayed when viewing contest pages. It seems to me that all of the top-rated Instructables get all the face time at the contest's main page, while others get pushed to the back. If you're like me and have little time during breaks at work to spend time on the site, then often you don't get past that first page. Thus other entries further back, which may be just as good, never get viewed (or rated, or commented, or voted for). I suggest that at the top level, all of the entries on a contest page should be completely randomized each time the page is refreshed. There should still be the option to sort based on views, ratings or votes, but none of these should be the default.

Some php trouble with Dreamweaver

I'm giving my sister a hand with her pharmacy website for the university she goes to. And we got a link on the main page: Pharmacy main page . The link is for the phrosh (frosh with a p due to it being "pharmacy" har har, I know). If you look on the phrosh page itself: Phrosh information . The thing is that it's supposed to have the same grey tile as the main page, and on my sister's computer (she sent me a screenshot) she's got the background on there, but you can't actually see it online.. Any ideas guys? Thanks.

Non-solar, non-mains power in the garden?

Looking for advice on low-tech ways of solving a prob, hope someone can help. I really want to create a very small waterfall in my mini-garden, maybe 6” at the most.  I can’t use solar power, as my tiny garden only gets about an hour or so of direct sun around noon (I found out that less then direct sun doesn‘t work; I have a floor-standing 4-bowl cascade that stops the instant a shred of cloud gets in the way). I can’t have mains electricity outside, partly because most of the area is paved and I can’t get the cables safely out of the way; I could get cable around the wall, but it’d have to go round three walls to get it where I need it, and I’m not sure about having the cable overhead. I’ve been searching for some time for some kind of power-pack that I could charge up on the mains, then plug into the feature; I don’t think household batteries would run for very long, I was thinking of something with a bit more punch. Either they don’t make anything like this, or I’ve not yet been able to find the right keywords to track it down; I get untold pages of “solar power” options.  So, basically, people, I’m asking: is there such a thing, or anything that would solve my prob?  I’d have to buy a tiny pump and all the rest of the stuff, but if I can’t power it, what’s the point? Some background: I’m visually impaired, so intricate work is out of the question; I’m not so much low-tech as no-tech; my only power tool is a small cordless drill/screwdriver;  I’m not confident about messing with electricity I live in rented accommodation so I can’t do too much to the structure (ie get the paving lifted and cables put under them, or even running round the walls)

Somewhat misleading link for bug reports on Submit page

I think that the link for "Submit new Bug Report" on the main Submit page is a bit misleading, especially to inexperienced users.  Instead of going directly to a page for creating a new forum topic in bugs (i.e., https://www.instructables.com/edit/new?type=forumTopic&categoryGroup;=help&category;=bugs) the URL associated with that button just goes to the top-level Help forums list. I'd like to suggest that the URL be changed.

Why cant i post my instructable? Answered

So i have about 10 finished ibles saved as drafts, and today ive been wanting to post at least one of them since there are a few applicable contests running. So i went into edit and clicked publish, it took me to screen where you have to add channel, category, license keywords etc... I used  attribution noncommercial share-alike which is the default it automatically brings up, i clicked 'publish now!' and nothing happened, the url didnt change, there was no loading icon, nothing looked like it had changed at all. So i tried clicking the 'Yes, publish my instructables' at the bottom of the page and still nothing happened. I tried both entering and not entering the ible into 3 contests, but no luck. Ive tried 3 times today, ive turned my internet and computer off and on twice. I really have no idea whats going on, ive posted 28 ibles over the course of 3 years and i dont think ive had this trouble before. The main contests i need to enter all end in about 2 weeks and i have a ton of ibles i need to enter so if anyone could proivide an answer ASAP that would be great

When I switch pages in answers there is a 7 second delay.  I'm using Firefox 3.62 and it does this on two systems running on different providers. If I go to a question page the page comes up and I don't have control of the cursor for 7 seconds.  The only error message I've been able to see said there was a script that was not finished.  I've checked for virus and malware.  When I go back to the main questions page the same thing happens. Login status doesn't seem to persist among pages

I'm using firfefox 3.6.8 under winxp.  I opened the "https://www.instructables.com/id/Secret-Poster-Stash/" url from my instructables email this morning, and the site didn't recognize me, so I entered my login info at the top of the page.  The header didn't update to show my logged in status, and I was still unable to do pro things to the instructable itself (view all on a single page).  If I clicked the link to the main page, I showed up as logged in.  I tried reloading the poster stash page, and killing that tab and entering it as a new link from a new tab still got the same result. I waited a while and then opened it as a new page again, and finally it showed me as logged in. Not sure what's going on, but I figured I'd mention it. --Regis

Contest archive bug

I found a bug in the contest archive. I want to get ideas for the upcoming Make It Fly contest, so I went to the archive and found all the past contests with a fly theme. I clicked on them, but it just sends you to instructables' main page. There is no error or anything, just like if you went to the main page. With a little investigating, I found out that the contests that are in 2017 work fine. All the ones older than 17 don't work and act as stated above. I use Chrome, and wondered if that was the problem. I went to FireFox, but it worked! You could click on a contest in 16, and it would come up fine, but then I clicked on one in 15, and it went to the main page again. Does it do this to anyone else?

It's a minor bug, but I've noticed that there is a mis-match in the comment totals shown on a member's page. New Interactive Collaboration Page & UI (Instructabook - social ible)

Bricobart has proposed a collaboration contest, read more: here. I guess it would be great to introduce the less-noticed collaboration feature of instructables.  Problem: I think one of the main reasons why the collaboration feature is ignored is because it's difficult to use. Difficult in a way that two or more ible members are having a hard time exchanging ideas through email. Emails are are slow and bulky compared to social networking. Also one of the problem with collabs is that the people who contributed to the write-up doesn't show-up on the credits. My Experience: My former classmate and I had the same problem. We both did the same thing, e-mailing. It also took us hours to finish a write-up. Months after my first collab another friend of mine encouraged me to do another collab, this time with the help of Facebook. The chat and group feature of FB blended perfectly with instructable's collab feature. Proposal: I think that it would be good to have a new social collaboration feature in ibles without using Facebook as a seperate medium for planning and for discussing ideas. ____________________________________________ Concept: The concept includes a designated page for social ible collaboration. The page has six main parts, the six main parts are the following. 1st.) Proposal Page: Imagine this as the forum page, it's divided into all the possible channel categories. People can post ideas of their dream project (like starting a new thread in forums).  2nd.) Find Partners: The project proposal threads are now being viewed by fellow ible members (members willing to discuss and build the project). The project proposal thread should have a "COUNT ME IN" button. Those who wants to join the project should press the "COUNT ME IN" button. 3rd.) Discussion Page: Now that you have found fellow ible members who are willing to build the proposed project, it's now time to close the thread. The thread's status is switched to "In Progress", the "COUNT ME IN" button is now greyed-out. During the discussion, collab members are redirected to a new page, the private discussion page. This page should look like a private group of Facebook. In this page, you can share photos, videos, ideas with one another. You can post on the group's wall and comment on the posts. Notifications shall be sent automatically to the "you page" once a member posts something on the group page. We need to know if everyone is ready to build the project. Once everyone has checked the "I'm Ready" check box, the project advances to the next step. *The discussion page can be accessed by fellow collab members anytime.  4th.) Write-up/ Editing Stage: This is where the traditional instructable text-editor comes in. This time with the presence of a  live chatbox, similar to FB. The chat box should also have a "upload/ attach an image" feature.  5th.) Add Contest: bricobart's idea comes in here. Collab members can join regular and special contests (collab contests). 6th.) Publish: The collab members can now publish the guide! Credits should be given to the collab members. Ex. Designer:_____, Builder:_____ , Programmer:_____, etc..... ______________________________________ I hope this helps. If the idea is too blurry, just tell me. I'll make a HTML-PHP dummy page of how it looks like.

Feature request: "Sorting" choice in topics lists under Groups

It isn't obvious to me how the page-generator chooses the order in which forum topics are listed on a Group's main page. It would be Really Nice if the section bar include choices for the order in which topics are presented (by date posted, by date of last reply, by number of replies, by author, etc.).

The search bar does not work!

From the explore page (https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/) I tried to use the search bubble at the top right. I typed USB charger for example, and it takes me to a search page (https://www.instructables.com/tag/type-id/?sort=none&q;=usb+charger) but that page only has a grey bar with the words "Let's make 'USB charger' with an option to choose different categories, e.g. everything, technology, etc... That page doesn't show any search results. It appears to be the main search page, because it has a little magnifying glass button after the text, but when I click it, it just returns me back to the "Explore" page cited above. I can't figure out how to search the site.  Also I tried to attach a screenshot but neither the new uploader nor the "old" uploader are responding to my clicks.

Missing Instructable and time out issues

As usual i'm still having problems with my session timing out after about 15 to 20 minutes on Win XP and Google chrome. Now one of my instructables is not showing up anywhere other then my profile. It was posted on the 15th, featured minutes later as was on the main page on the 16th. Now it doesn't show up on the technology main page or the USB sub page like it should.  https://www.instructables.com/id/Universal-USB-Power-Supply-Kit/ I've done all the usual things of clearing the cache, restarting the browser and all of that. Still the timeout issues persists. At work i don't seem to have this problem with session timing out. But i'm on Win 7 systems running fire fox. I would be running Chrome but have been unable to install it on the work PCs.

How fast is an Instructable featured? Answered

I received an email that my Instructable has been featured. 16 hours later, it isn't labeled as "featured" yet, nor has it appeared on the main page. Am I too impatient?

Browsing frustration

There seems to be at least 3 different formats for browsing Instructables. The frustration I have is, if I want to spend any amount of time browsing a specific searched subject, I don't dare wander off the main page to view an Instuctable. Once I do, I have to start at the beginning of the many pages I have preciously browsed and scroll through dozens of pages to return to my spot. A similar thing happens with the contest pages. It keeps loading more entries on the same page as I get to the bottom of the page. If I view an entry, I have to start at the beginning again. When a contest has over 600 entries like one of the current contests, I find myself not looking at ibles I'd like to see because I don't want to find my place again after the back button returns me to the beginning of the first page. When I browse the featured page, it's much better because I can flip through a page at a time and return to my most recent page when I hit the back button after checking out a great Instructable. If this could be changed, it would extend my browsing time and also give members who have made instructables, every opportunity to get well deserved views. If I'm missing something obvious, please let me know.
