Talking Clock

Hi Everybody, I'm new to the forum of inscrutables, but I've been bored at work recently and been thinking of things to brighten the place up. I've come up with an idea, but have very limited technical skills, if somebody could just point me in the right direction so that I could start this project I would be really appreciative and would post up pictures and videos of the final product. Idea: Essentially, I work at a pool where the lifeguards rotate every 15 mins, which they forget to do OFTEN! Me and a few others have decided to make a clock to replace our current one that would, every 15 mins make a noise, or say "rotate" to remind them to rotate on time. It would also be fun if we could have several different voices saying "rotate" of different employees. I'm pretty sure this can be done because I've seen clocks that make bird chirping noises, But I can't figure out how they work. Any help would be awesome, I really want to learn new things, which I think is everybody's reason for being on instructables anyway. Thanks, George

Things a plant would say...

I'm working on something fun... We'll leave it at that for now. I need a nice, long list of things a plant would say to a human. Humor and biology geekiness are welcome! Patches to folks who come up with the most phrases or the best phrases. Keep it PG though, ok? Here are some examples: "I think you should become a meatatarian" "So when are you going to evolve and run on sunshine, like I do?" "Gahhh! Aphids! Get 'em off! Get 'em off!" "I'm thirsty. Water Me!" "Audrey II is my hero." "No worries, baby - I'm organic!" "When you belch it's like a breath of fresh air." "My pistol is useless against insects!" "If you kill me, I think you should try a rock garden next."

Talk at Google

Thanks to an invite from Cat Allman, who I met on a train back to the airport after OSCON, Tetranitrate, T3h_Muffinator, and I headed down to Google yesterday to talk about Instructables. The first bit didn't make the video; it starts at slide 22 of 34, so I've attached the .pdf of my slides below. I ran through the slides as an intro, then we answered questions and showed off some projects and videos from the site. There were lots of things I wanted to talk about that either didn't fit or were forgotten- particularly about the issue of intellectual property- but I guess that's a great excuse for another visit!

Things that make me happy

So every now and then, someone says something like "that won't work."Now, depending on who or s/he is and what it is that "won't work" - I'll accept or try to make it work. Typically, it's the latter - exceptions for cases of heavy machinery and obvious scenarios that may involve sudden and imminent death. So I had a bus driver tell me my bike won't fit on the bike rack... I do ride a recumbent - but it's a high racer. Recumbents have all the same bike parts - just in different locations. High racers happen to have two big wheels (26" in my case) - and they're located in the same spots as any other bike. Well, I'm posting here - so obviously it worked... And that makes me happy :)In other news, I've been riding that 'bent for about a month - and I noticed today that my legs don't burn as much after my commute to/from school while keeping a decent pace :) <---when you convert from an upright to a 'bent, you need to retrain your muscles. This also makes me happy, but I've been purposefully training for a cycling event in a few months...Anyone have a similar story that makes them happy?

Three things

If you were to be stuck in the wilderness, and needed to survive, what three things would you want to have? No cars, phones, complete survival kits, etc. those just make it less fun. Only put single, survival type things in your list..you should be able to tell if it's "cheating" or not. If you choose food, don't be outrageous in it...an energy bar, not a case of them from costco. Guns can count, but bullets are separate...maybe ten bullets if you choose to have them as one of your three things.Mine:knifeflintWater bottleAlso, what "Creature Comfort" would you want? This can be something like a book, harmonica, stuffed animal, etc. Pets are allowed, as long as it's not your hunting dog, or your giraffe who gathers coconuts for you.Mine is my dog, Buck. =]Have fun, and be creative!

Thing-a-day Round 2

February is Thing-a-day month. Sign up to make something every day for the whole month and post photos or video to the blog. There are no prizes, just the sheer momentum of being a part of a huge group of creative folks egging each other on to keep producing no matter what.Sign-up is open to anyone and starts on January 21st. The deadline to commit to the sprint is January 31st at midnight. From the site: - Thing-a-day a month long online event where people take on the challenge to create one new thing every day for a month and post their work on this blog. It's also a place to exchange thoughts, ideas and comments on the nature of this creative process. - Anyone can participate and no one will bug you if you don't post every day. You're free to sign up, you're free to give up and you're free to succeed. - No rewards or prizes but the pleasure of knowing you'll have made 29 brand new things by the end of February and a few new friends (or fans) if you're lucky. - Daily creations can be in any medium. Is anybody else getting talking ads that cannot be turned off on their instructables articles. To me, this is a complete no-no. I appreciate that the instructables team have to make money, but there is already enough ads without this. It is invasive of other people who happen to be around you and invasive of you too.

Hackduino-like thing help!? Answered

First a little background to help you understand whats going on... I live in the Philippines, i grew up here and part of my hobby is Electronics. I usually scrounge up parts due to the fact that parts are kinda outta my reach and it's a shame to let all that money go to waste when i can find salvaged parts. Recently, i got the idea of programming and searched around 'ibles for pojects on TI's MCUs. Finding none, i thought it wouldn't be worth the effort to try to program one of these with lack of info so i thought "what about the arduino?". Arduinos are kinda popular here but one thing sets me back. Getting one. So since my mom won't let me get an arduino (i'm a High school student), i need to resort to making one. Most of my sample requests from Atmel have been denied so it's time to quit being a cheapskate just for arduino! (and for science yay!) I sourced some parts, haven't bought the most important ATmega328 (it's kinda big but better get it than upgrading) and i'm starting to prepare. I read the HackDuino and i just need some help and info such as: * How do i make an arduino using common electronic parts? * What schematic will i use that will allow me to upload using a serial port? * How will i prepare the chip without another arduino? (I heard about bootloaders and stuff) I have lots of questions, but if you know some arduino tips and facts, you may throw it in Thanks in advance

Talk me into Linux

I've been considering the switch to linux. I have currently loaded SimplyMEPIS onto an old laptop to give it a try, I was impressed. I think I like the Ubuntu Distro a little better but I'm teetering on the edge of a complete switch. I need a push over the edge. My issues at the moment is that the old crapy laptop is just kinda, what I call, my beater book. its the laptop I don't worry about to much and use for word proccesing on the run and simple Internet tasks. SimplyMEPIS works excellent for these purposes. My concern is compatibility with my everyday computer needs....... and my not so ordinary endevors. I would consider myself an Expert when it comes to Windows XP......... a step above Expert if there is such a thing...... I know it inside and out and I can manipulate it like a dirty 5 dollar crack whore. I realize there will be a learning curve but will it be compatible with everything I use in windows? ........ I do a lot of media editing and music recording....... is this a possibility in linux? (I realize Mac pro tools is my overall best option) somebody please convince me to switch beyond a shadow of a doubt. or talk me down from the ledge.

Obama gives props to "the makers of things"

This isn't a political post - just an observation. I took note of the phrase "makers of things" during Obama's inauguration speech. Go Makers!"In reaffirming the greatness of our nation, we understand that greatness is never a given. It must be earned. Our journey has never been one of short-cuts or settling for less. It has not been the path for the faint-hearted - for those who prefer leisure over work, or seek only the pleasures of riches and fame. Rather, it has been the risk-takers, the doers, the makers of things - some celebrated but more often men and women obscure in their labor, who have carried us up the long, rugged path towards prosperity and freedom."

Communication system for Race Car

I have been looking at a number of racing supply web sites for the parts and am astonished at some of the prices. I am wondering if there is money to be saved by making these ourselves? And, if so, where should I start? Well this " I like x " thing became complicated Answered

TL;DR version at the bottom, below the line Oh you know, just one of those " I like x " situations, except with a twist. So yeah, I like this girl, we talk for short the small short talk (lasts for about 0.8 seconds). She might know that I have a crush on her (since about 30% of the class knows, of which 80% are friends with this person), but I'm uncertain. Either way, I'm not shy about that. The problem lies in the fact that the 24% of the class that's friends with her knows. Normally, they're always with / around her, which makes talking with her (in the first place) already challenging. Imagine maybe 4 people interrupting your conversation only 2 seconds in. It's like trying to play a video game with the worst ping ever; your talk getting interrupted and all. I would just like to have a chat with her that lasts over 15 seconds, at least, that doesn't involve official business (all talks with her so far involved school projects and such). To my assessment, she's astoundingly similar yet the opposite of me... She's simple, yet highly organized (that's me). She doesn't wanna stand out (like me). Generally silent, shy and reserved (somewhat like me, most of the time anyways). Now here's the part I would like to relate to, but I don't know how: music. She plays the piano, and I play the violin. Now, these are performing arts; you perform these in front of people. We don't play the same instruments, therefore we can't talk about it. Composing a piece? Not a chance. That's my work mode wherein I become secluded from the world (bad impression). Intention: I would just like to make friends, thank you very much (did it last year, too, though without the complications) Age: 13 turning 14 (me) and she's 13 More details: -Freshmen -I can control myself, thank you Additionally: I don't know if she likes me or not. I just need to become friends with her to clear some things up and... make more friends? I'm not bringing my hopes up, though. I have an opportunity to start off our friendship (which is due in less than a week), since we have this Christmas party going and we're supposed to have a gift exchange with a "randomly chosen" person which is done by just pulling out folded pieces of paper and.. yeah, there's the name. The wishlist is simple, yet a tad pricey (just roughly $10, but compared to my allowance). This is getting too long Questions: -How do I make friends now? -How do I sustain this? I'm not good at making friends. I either attract them to me or it was a need that developed. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ TL;DR version: I like a girl and I want to make friends with her, but then I can't talk with her because of massive external social pressure from her ever-present friends that know I have a crush on her. How can I approach her and sustain our friendship? Thank you.

Smallest thing to make an LED flicker?

I'm just wondering what's the smallest thing I can use to make an 0603 smt LED flicker (not blink/flash)? I love the look of simply having a bad connection to the battery, but sadly that's not a very good or reliable method. I suppose I could use an AVR chip, but I've never done that before an it looks expensive to start. Any chance there's something like a flicker resister that I could just solder into my wire?

Talking about my Summer

I have to admit that I was skeptical before starting my Residency at Instructables. I never felt comfortable calling myself a "Maker" and here I was, walking into the belly of the beast at Pier 9. I felt like the term "Maker" was starting to read as cold, technical, robotic and...frankly...stuff really geared towards young boys. I felt as though I was coming into the program as a spy, an outsider looking to infiltrate and be critical of the hype around 3D printing. My project was really my attempt to talk openly about how I felt about these things in a way that people who design and use these machines might take notice. I was expecting to walk into an office full of dudes that wanted to make crazy things just because they could but I was created by quite another experience. The other AiRs were all interesting, questioning, infiltrating. The entire company was full of creative, open-minded, artsty folk and I can't tell you how good it felt to be in the electronics lab one day with all these different amazing and creative women coming in and out. I end my residency (the full-time part anyway) with a different attitude and the realization that people are pretty open-minded, excited and down-right nice! I never imagined people would go to the lengths they did just to help see the project along and it felt great to help and encourage others to see their ideas though. I think I leave the summer with a few new friends. On my presentation day, I felt like I wanted people to sign my year-book - it's that kind of place. My favorite thing about the residency was also made the residency difficult. The space and people are so interesting and engaging that conversations start all the time. It's so great, but also makes it really hard to get work done! There is so much going on that its hard to stay on top of what people are working on - especially with the residents that aren't around everyday. It would be interesting to find ways to facilitate feedback and collaboration in different ways. We do an exercise in a class I help with at Berkeley where people put their projects on the wall and the other students add post-its with feedback. Maybe if we had a wall like that in the Air-ea it could be a way to keep tabs of all the work and also give short snippets of feedback without interrupting someone's flow. It wouldn't be a way to replace other ways of sharing what we're working on, but a sounding board for just quick, "have you seen X" kind of ideas. I can't say thank you enough. I had a great, productive summer and I'm excited to be sticking around for a bit longer and seeing the new AiRs that come in and out. I would (and have) recommend the program to anyone - it was a really wonderful experience!

Electric synthesized talk box? Answered

This is find of a run off of a previous question, where someone came up with the idea of making my voice sound like that in song Technoloigic by Daft Punk. Reason being, I'l be wearing one of their helmets. My question is: does anyone know of a way to make a talkbox that will work off of my plan voice with no outside noise? IE, I talk into a mic and the output is the sound from a talkbox. It would have to be small enough to fix into a coat pocket (so roughly the size of a pack of cards).

The Internet is a Big Thing.

Really.Really. Big.So I was bored. So bored, in fact, that I decided to Google myself. I clicked the text box of my Google search bar and typed in Labot2001. Just to see what comes up, what web sites I've forgotten about, who spies on me, etc. It wasn't until I Googled myself that I realized how big the Internet actually was.For example, my mousetrap car showed up on MAKE. And about 50 million other places. Same with a handful of my other ibles. It's weird to think that the Internet just loops around, through, and under itself a million times. Sometimes without even realizing it.So try it. Google yourself. Share what you find.

I have this thing? Answered

I have this thing. I got it from a bag of obsolete parts where my dad works. It's a component, with a black plastic body. It's about 24 mm wide and 19 mm long. It has five leads, two coming out of the right and three coming out of the left. The text on it is as follows: AMF POTTER & BRUMFIELD 109P471 JRE-4011 MADE IN U.S.A. (Out here it has a symbol like "SA" inside the letter C) 02-07-75 The last one is obviously a date, it was made in the seventies. AMF used to make all kinds of things in the 60's and 70's apparently, so this must just be one of their products. My dad and I think it's a relay, but I've Googled it to no avail. Are there any old-time electronics nuts who can help me out here? Thanks a lot.

The big list of things that I hate. (yes, I'm feeling down)

The big list of things that I hate (inspired off of Keith Kid's "50 things that I hate"): - Waking up at 7:00 AM - Mom hating rap - Going to school - Nobody seeing how awesome Maddox is - little computer time - even less time to play with knex - even less knex to play with (well, I don't think this applies anymore, thanks to berkin.) - Mom - Dad - Pep rallies - Football games - Wait, I think its all sports on TV. - Rain - The 80's (It has a weird relation to pep rallies) - The fact that everything on TV sucks - My uncle never coming over anymore - Foreign languages (Ironically, I am half asian) - People asking me to speak Chinese - The fact that I left KI off this list. (yes, this is a joke) - The Jonas brothers - Oh wait a minute, I think it's everyone who works for Disney, not just the fail bros - Halloween - Mondays - The fact that I sweat too much. - The fact that I am bored - Myspace - Facebook - Twitter - The fact that Biggie and 2pac are dead - The fact that I don't have an xbox to play halo on. - Mom threatening to cut my internet off - Cops. - School - The fact that half the stuff people tell me is stuff that I don't give a crap about. - Dogs and dog owners. - The fact that I don't have money to make my own site where I can post this list. Now that I got that out of my chest....

Kiteman, out in public...

Dorkbot Anglia is a regular evening of talks and conversations with "people doing strange things with electricity" in the East Anglian area. We are delighted to announce our seventh meeting as the guests of the CSV Media Clubhouse on Thursday 24th November. Entry is free. Thursday 24th November 2011, 7:30-10pm CSV Media Clubhouse, 120 Princes Street, Ipswich, Suffolk, IP1 1RS (About five or ten minute's walk from Ipswich railway station) This time, there's a special guest ... Edit: It was a grand night, lots of folk went home with a determination to try the site, plus a new t-shirt. Even better, Tim Hunkin was in the audience! Afterwards, we speakers and the organisers adjourned to a pub called St Jude's for some excellent beer and, frankly, a rather random conversation. Some interesting ideas about mixing the concepts of 3d printer and laser-cutter, though...

What are these two things for? Answered

They are pieces of a video player from a DIY store (you know the little tv thingies playing commercials 24/7) I got when they moved part of the store out. I want to make a dvd player out of it to hang in my dorm but I have a problem (well not a really big one but still). The dvd player has a side way hatch where you can plug an SD card and/or usb drive into. When you do that and the USB or SD contains a movie the player immediatly starts playing the movie when you plug it in. But when you don't put in an SD card or USB drive you get a start menu with: photo camera (just an icon of a photo camera nothing stating camera), music, photo + music, movie, setup, calendar, clock, alarm, auto-power, edit, favorite But I can't select anything in this menu because I don't see any buttons! Also this is not a touch screen (I checked) So my question is, what are these things for, if they are the buttons how do they work and if not where would the buttons be?
