Maker

Hi Everyone,  Not too sure if this is the right forum for this, so apologies if not! We're a small startup based in the UK that's looking to make Edtech products to push engineering and making skills to 12+ (and big kids too!). We've got a prototype device called the Carduino (http://www.cardino.co.uk) but need a little feedback on it from the making community - if any of you could fill in our 2 minute survey, it would make us very happy! Plus, you could win an early version of your very very own. Here's the link! : https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X3YF6PF XXXX

Makers sought

I'm a book editor based in the UK and am seeking a maker to construct a large (ie 4 ft or larger) balloon/inflatable/dirigible and to provide instructional how-to for a book project (the end result needs to be photograph-able). Fee is payable, but time is tight - need help within the next two to three weeks. Can e-mail reply if it's easier than posting - mail@scollins.demon.co.uk.

Maker milestones?

What are some tools you've acquired or things you've learned that have shaped your maker ways? Yesterday my first dress form came in the mail, and this morning Jace and I took my measurements and I set it up. Now I have an accurate representation of myself. :D I'm really excited. I'm making a mermaid costume this year for halloween, and now I can really get started! Plus, I've been wanting to sew my own clothes forever and this will help me! As far as other milestones for me: - Inheriting my gramma's fabric stash and sewing tools - buying my first Wusthof knife - buying my first set of pots and pans - a really nice stainless steel Cuisinart set - been using them now for six years! - investing in a hand saw! (And subsequently sawing the legs off my old craft table to make us a really nice coffee table.)

Maker as business

I have a question that has been bugging me.  is it unethical to open a business that caters to makers? I have a million and one hobbies and some of them run along with my work studies and i was just wondering if its been done to just open up a shop where people can get together to build projects together, or to sell items that are made as a business. it would seem to be a good idea from my perspective and seems to help all.

maker freecycle?

Would anybody be interested in joining a gorup dedicated to helping you find the tools or parts your looking for, free, donated to you by someone whose done with it? it might be too much to ask you to part with your stuff, we all have our attachments to out junk, but if your not doing anything with it, maybe someone else can. And you never know; maybe they will create the trends of the future with your blender... i will create one if there are some possitive responses...

Maker's License?

I have a few Instructables I'm working on - none posted yet - but i'm debating on what would be the best licensing...On the simple project, I'm going to go with the Creative Commons (attribution, share-alike) license. The other project is a different creature - I'm looking at creating a general purpose widget - then others can adapt the widget to their specific use. To get others involved in adapting the widget, i would start a contest here and offer a prize to the best adapted (or 'remixed') widget. Here's the dilemma that haunts me a little...1) A man or women that is 17 years old adapts the widget to fulfill a need that many people can use. Everyone is happy. Then, 6 months later, their adapted widget is being sold at the local hardware store. Great! Except that the Maker isn't getting any kind of design fee for the commercial product - and could have used that money to help with their college expenses...2) A man or women that is 67 years old adapts the widget that becomes the 'must have' item for seniors. This time it's being sold on QVC and being promoted in AARP magazine. Great! Except that the Maker isn't getting any kind of design fee for the commercial product - and could have used that money to help with health expenses...As for me - i'm looking at only attribution for the general purpose widget and waive any kind of design fee for commercial use for myself...BUT -If someone designs and makes an adaptive widget that really takes off - then i would like them to get credit and at least reap a little fiscal reward for their blood, sweat, and tears that they put into it if it takes off as a huge commercial success.Again - just attribution for me (it's a general purpose widget!) - the thoughtfulness in making comes from adapting it to a specific use - it's fun - but it takes work too. When i get ready to post - I was thinking of a...Makers License 1) Attribution, share alike, I waive any and all commercial fees for the general purpose widget2) Remix Fee: a) Remix Makers fee: You can build a Remix Design for yourself - however - if you intend to sell the remix to others then a remix fee applies. The remix fee to the author is limited to $1.00 per item you sell. Contact Author for fee arrangement before selling.OR b) Remix Maker waives all fees.I don't know - am i over thinking this?Any help, advice, or suggestions - Please Post!Thank You,-MM

Maker Course

So -  I'd like what basically amounts to a course of things you can make in an evening, starting from near scratch in tools, materials, and skills, gradually building up to established in tools, materials and skills. The format would simply be an ordered list of things to make, each of which take an afternoon, that when you've built them all you've built some cool stuff and learned to make stuff. More importantly, that you really can "just make something". I think that I can order the list, but I don't really know good things to put on it... Is this making sense? The idea started when I realized that I could, in fact, just go make that thing I thought of a while ago, and that maybe there's something in my head that makes me think I can't "just make things". So - what if I got up every day and said, "I can!" - and then followed through by doing something I didn't think I could just get up and do? That would be awesome! Alright - now, what could those things be? Prominently - made things. And that means (among a few other places...) Instructables! So - post things that take an evening to make, and what kind of skills, tools and materials they take, and then we'll worry about putting them into a course-like-order PS - Suggest tags, or a better place in the forums? PPS - Or I just didn't pick good search terms looking for this, it already exists, and here's a link....?

A Maker's Musician!

I'm not hugely into music, but I have just come across Seasick Steve (after an appearance on Top Gear!). The CD of I started Out With Nothing and I Still Got Most of it Left arrived in the mail this morning, and is now playing on my Zen, filed next to Walter Trout. I am gobsmacked. This man has been playing this stuff all my life, and I only just find out?  That's forty years of enjoyment I have missed out on! Not only is he, frankly, amazing, but he'd fit right in here, because he makes and modifies his own instruments : From wikipedia: As well as an electric guitar and self electrified acoustic guitar, Wold owns (and plays) several obscure and personalised instruments, including: The Three-String Trance Wonder - This is a normal guitar that resembles a Fender Coronado, but with only three strings. It has an old Harmony pickup added (with duct tape) and is tuned to G, G and B using an E string in the A position, a D in the G position and a G in the B position. At his gigs, he often tells the story that he bought it for $75 in this condition in Como, Mississippi from a man named Sherman, who later told him he only paid $25 for it the day before. Wold vowed never to add another string, and that he would tour the world telling his story of how Sherman ripped him off. All in good fun as Sherman Cooper is a good buddy, who gave him the guitar having had it nailed to the wall as a decoration. A lot of the time he also adds (while picking up or putting away the guitar) that it is the "...biggest piece of [poo] in the world, I swear". The One-Stringed Diddley Bow - This is a one stringed string instrument played with a slide (He uses an old screwdriver for this purpose). It consists of a 2 foot long 2x4, with a semi-loose piece of broom wire nailed to it at both ends. It was made especially for him by James 'Super Chikan' Johnson. The 'MDM' (Mississippi Drum Machine) - A small wooden box that is stomped upon, providing percussion. It is decorated with a Mississippi motorcycle license plate ("MC33583"), and a small piece of carpet. Roland Cube Amplifier - Placed on a chair to his left and set to the 'tweed' setting. The Morris Minor Guitar - When on the TV show Top Gear, presenter Jeremy Clarkson commented that Steve's car history of over 100 cars included a Morris Minor. Steve then produced a 4-string guitar that his friend had made out of two old hub caps from the Minor joined back-to-back, playing it a little in the episode. Why are still reading this?  Go, listen to it.  Now.

Check out the new Makers Market by Make:!

Make: has created the Makers Market which is basically an online farmers market for makers!  There are some awesome products that people are selling, so check it out!  It is sort of Etsy-esque, but Make chooses who is allowed to sell.  They call is a "curated marketplace."  As Make: describes it: A collaboration between MAKE and Boing Boing, Makers Market brings together our favorite entrepreneurial makers and artists selling products and services directly to DIY enthusiasts.  The products are "Maker-Made," either made by, rebuilt by, or substantially produced by the maker selling them. The market is currently in beta, but it is fully functional and ready for you to start shopping.  If you are interested in selling in the market, submit your application:makersmarket.com/manage/messages/new And while you are at it, check out my personal storefront: makersmarket.com/sellers/24

Makers and Creators! Every year artists and engineers from the NY community gather their illuminated installations and wearables together in a celebration of optics and artistry known as the Black & Light Ball.  This year's theme honors the work of Leonardo DaVinci, and we can think of no better group of innovators and artists than you to invite to display your work, and epitomize the inventive spirit of the quintessntial Renaissance Man. Black & Light Ball has always been akin to a Psychadelic Maker Fair with a mix of amazing visuals emanating from all angles (along with DJs, projections, and performances) --- and this year we are going to make it even more so--- WITH YOUR PARTICIPATION... Budgets available for works that embody glowy, trippy, blinky amazement -- if you would like to display on May 21 please submit here: http://goo.gl/forms/giRMkz2Iyw The Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1670167269900365/

Collaboration, Innovation

I have a nice, (almost!) ready to use house in sub-urban Tampa close to everything! with a huge yard, garage, roof, EMPTY that I have tried to offer to a few small groups of semi-makers, who immediately put a contract under my nose limiting access to all others for 5 years while they make money there. NO NO NO     Where are all the woodworking, electronic robotic/arduino contolling aqua/permaculturist  hackers with great organizational skills that want to collaborate, innovate, grow their own food while mentoring their own and others' kids in S T E A M and maybe incubating new businesses like rainwater diverting, alternative energy material, exploring new and old skills and practices that make sense and keep our money home.? My son and I attended a conference put on by the extension service of the U of FL which basically told of so many opportunities available right now for back yard businesses to be allowed under the Best Management Practices umbrella. But noone is telling the citizens about this. We have to seek and find ourselves. I'm ready. Any farmers or fisherman out there that want to try something different for a season?

Start a makerspace in Tampa?

I have been trying to turn a 3bedroom house with a big yard into a makerspace but the only 2 interested groups wanted an exclusive agreement, despite FREE rent, and didn't seem to want to do much except collect fees from other people. How can I get creative people who want to collaborate, innovate, and learn and DO? It could certainly be an incubation for sustainable business that need a place to experiment, or a lab or anything, I just don't want it to be a constant power struggle with no plan, and no results.
