Easy Computer Mouse Modification / Repair

The first time I did this modification was about 10 years ago, and this is my second attempt. Both times it was done as a repair and not strictly as a modification. There are actually many advantages to a newly "rewired" mouse such as the mouse button being easier and more convenient to press.  (possibly an inexpensive and simple method to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome?) Anyway, the modification is located on one of my website pages: http://www.1728.org/mousemod.htm I've seen a lot of mouse modifications on the Internet and I doubt I was the first one to think of this. **************************************************************************** Edited to Add I finally uploaded a picture to this posting.

Nerf N-Strike CS magazine mode

To keep a long story short, here is the problem I'm trying solve:  I'm in the process of moding  a Nerf N-Strike into  a coil gun.  My "ammo" for this are steel archery tips that measure 8mm in diameter.  Since I'm overseas right now and have to order the gun online, while I wait for it to show up, I'd like some input as to how I might increase the magazine's spring strength while narrowing the inside width of the magazine to accomodate the diameter of the of new round.  In the past I've tried small pieces of foam board and plexiglass, but that has a tendancy to get messy and cause too much friction.  I'm sure once I have the gun to look at and play with some "great idea" will come to me, but until them I'm stuck imagining.  Any help would be appreciated.

A/V Cord to Typical Stereo Wires? Answered

I have a surround sound speaker system that only takes the typical stereo wires (you know, positive and negative electrode inputs for left and right side). I also have a stereo reciever that only provides A/V outputs. I was pondering how I could make these work when I realized that, even with an A/V cord, it still needs to make a complete circuit. Thus the cord needs to have two wires going through it, and the plug had a way to complete that circuit. Now that I know this, I want to know if I can cut the plug off of one end, strip the wires apart, and plug those wire ends in my subwoofer? If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know! And please help me determine which wires are positive and negative current. THANKS!

Lately I've been looking for vacuum cleaner mods. I've done several Google searches and Instructables searches, and found only this one bag-to-bagless conversion. I expected there to be at least a handful of pages on vacuum cleaner modification on the Web. Does anybody have any suggestions on where to look?

TV Aerial Modification

Hi, I have a Yaggi style tv aerial (vertical polarisation, wideband) in the loft I pick up the main signals from a sub-transmitter (forgotten the right word) to the front of the aerial - good reception. I receive some weak signals, depending upon the weather conditions, from the main transmitter at the rear of the aerial. I receive these signals by reflections from the landscape, etc. I am thinking of attempting to boost the reception from the rear by placing horizontal directors alongside the vertical directors. Do you think this idea will increase, decrease, or make little difference to the reflected/direct receptions. Thanks A PS.  Before you ask, Yes I have tried pointing the aerial towards the main transmitter, but I get no signals, due to geographical considerations. I get better reception from the main transmitter when the aerial points 90 degreesaway from it.

Can I modify my hi-fi so that the cassette deck becomes a USB port?

I want to add a USB port to my stereo system (Home Hi-Fi). I want to keep the CD drawer, so getting rid of that is a definate no-no. It also has two cassette decks, which i'd be more than happy to modify. I know the tech exists, but can't find any schematics for it (probably for a good reason, but still). Any help would be much appreciated Allyn ~ FreakWorx

Firefly Flashlight Mod

I have figured out something useful without making the firefly ugly. First, take out all of the screws, and start mapping them by the nerf's shape. Sorry I have no pics, but I want this to not take three days. Take out the pieces that support the barrel. Draw a map if you have to, because this can get very annoying to put back. take out the barrel with the supporting orange piece and throw away the orange front piece. This may reduce slight accuracy, but you can now use sonic micro darts, and you need to to do my 3rd to next mod. Unscrew the back of the barrel. take out the piece. Unscrew the 3 screws on the back, too. Make sure to keep mapping. Unsrew the last front screws. Get small pliers or a large screwdriver and pry it open, going all around. Take out the springs and the 3-pronged pieces. Put the barrel back together. Take out the air pump and stretch the spring. Put back the gun, using your mapping. Now, for the fun part. Drill a hole through the center of the barrel, big enough for your flashlight. You are done. Have fun.

can you grid a saw into the back of a knife? Answered

Want a sawback knife, not willing to spend 70$ on one just yet. So with a file, a hacksaw, and some sharpening stones, could one easily make a "saw" or some very coarse serrations on the back of a knife suitable for bush craft and basic survival/trap/shelter construction? wouldn't need to cut down a tree, just make notches in branches for traps, and basic things like that.

I have an old Toshiba satellite laptop with a bad motherboard; is there anything I can do with it?

The original problem was that the laptop wasn't getting power. The shop I took it to said it was the motherboard and that it wasn't worth the price of a replacement. So, I'm not 100% positive that this is the actual problem, since i declined repair, but that's what they said. Everything else is in good working condition as far as I know (including the power supply and battery--we tested those). I'm now running snow leopard on a macbook--I was hoping that the screen might be turned into an external monitor without using the motherboard, but i've seen all the answers about needing a controller and all, so I don't expect that. Still, getting any use from this thing would be great. Any ideas?

Help building slimline portable speaker mod?

I am trying to build a portable slimline speaker set for my Ipod. I have to sets of computer speakers that I can use. One consists of 2 separate speakers with 3.5mm jacks. I worry that they may draw more power than the Ipod can supply. The other set has a USB and a 3.5mm jack for input. Is it possible to build (or buy) a battery pack (or somthing similar) to power the usb? Please give any and all suggestions on how to build and how to get best results. (I am open to buying parts or new speakers that would work better) I am doing this for kicks (but i do want to get a good setup out of it) so please don't say: "just go to such and such website and buy such and such portable slimline speakers" Thanks

Assassin's Creed Hidden blade *MODIFICATION*?

So i, like many others, have some strange obsession with Hidden Blades and really want one. However, i do not have the machines to make one from scratch like most of the walk thoughs on here, and since i do not have enough time at the moment, heres what i was wondering: Is there anyone out there with enough time, money, brains and skill to convert a shop bought hidden blade from spring loaded mechanism to the more realistic ring pull mechanism? I think it could potentially be quite a challenge, working around the already existing parts. I am talking about the blades on sites such as Forbidden Planet, and also i have found iconiccollectables.com selling them.

How can I use my IBM Profile or my laptop LCD screen as just a monitor for my desktop machine? Answered

I have very limited space to work out of and would like do away with big monitor. Even more limited is money. But parts, inngenuity and creativity abound! I love to make cool stuff out of found crap. Can I use my IBM Profile, (flat screen with whole computer housed within the screen), as just a monitor for my desktop machine. (Compaq Pavillion, XP sp3)? Can I make a monitor out of my laptop LCD screen? ( Acer Travelmate- it fried due to frequent overheating, not sure yet what is good/bad internally, gets stuck trying to boot, screen is fine) What is essential to a monitors' functioning, (hardware, driver, software, emmulation)? I've researched the subject a little bit, but havent found definitively the minimum of parts or features I need to make it work. I found more info on how much more you can get it to do, other than just BE A SCREEN for my desktop machine, and most of the info seems to take for granted that the reader has done this kind of mod or adaptation before. I'm clever and have some skills but it is not my profession, just a DIY that interests and challenges me to DO IT, and it would give me back my work surface. So? Can it be done? Is it practical? Better ideas maybe? Thanx All.

Servo Mod help

Hi Every one thanks for looking at my post. I have a specific project where I need 8 servos which would need to rotate up to 360 degrees. Please note I do not need continuous rotation mod, which would make me loose servo angle control. Given that i ended up with 3 options 1. Buy a winch or sail servo - these are costly about $40 and not sure if they suite my need. 2. Add an additional gear with 1:2 or 2:1 ratio (not sure about the terminology) of the main servo gear ( attached to pot); Servo rotates about 230 degrees now, so limiting it to 180 degrees from code and with the additional gear and modification I can get a 360 rotation on the added gear and use that as my main servo drive. 3. Replace current potentiometer with a multi-turn one ( available for around $2) with similar resistance value, this along with the potentiometer gear stop peg removal would give more than 360 degree rotation. Servo control would not be effected as resistance value is same and angle must be limited from code to keep the potentiometer from going to the end limits. I am just preparing and calculating the current gear values to decide on the specs needs for the gear mod. I need to measure servo pot values to find a suitable multi-turn pot. I would really appreciate if any one could comment on my approach and any alternatives. I wish some one had tried these before and could share their experience. Thanks Satya

Guitar Hero Drums Mod for PS2?

I have Guitar Hero III for playstation2 and I don't want to get rock band. I know the Rock Band drums don't work for guitar hero. Maybe i could take apart a Guitar hero controller and make it into a drum set. I want it to be able to wammy and use star power (maybe pedals or something). and i want to be able to press 3 buttons at the same time (another pedal?). I also want to be able to hit it repeatedly to hold a note (like in rock band). I guess it should "strum" automatically when i hit a note. I don't have any idea on how to make it, but i know it's possible, and that there is a simple way of doing it. it doesn't have to look nice. it should just work. Anyway, I hope someone could help me out and make an Instructable or a youtube video or something. I'm sure many others would love to do it. thanks, schetleft

PC USB steering wheel 180 degrees 1080?

I've got a GEMBIRD STR-SHOCKFORCE-M Multi Interface steering wheel which I bought new about a month ago. It is pretty much "you get what you pay for" as far as it goes, and its not nearly as good (nor did I expect it to be) as, lets say a G27. Now, I have never used a G27 but I saw some videos, and it seems that it can do a full turn, while this one only does 90 degrees to each side - 180 in total. I'd like to modify it somehow so it can be rotated 1080 degrees like in a real car, or atleast somewhat more than 180. I found it useful in some racing games where turning needed to be quick and sharp, but in some simulation games it just jerked the ingame steering wheel like it were out of cardboard and ultimately I end up parked inside a wall or on top of a tree.(adjusting the steering wheel AND ingame sensitivity setting to lowest didn't help) If anyone needs pictures I'll post them later today.
