Physics question has me stumped

A large crate sits on a pickup truck which has coefficients of friction mu(s) =0.6 and mu(k) =0.4 . My question is how do I calculate the impact velocity if the truck accelerates (-8.0 m/s^2) and the crate slides forward 1.5 m to impact the back of the truck? Can anyone please walk me through this problem whenever you get the chance? Thank you.

According to physics, does driving with a heavy load increase traction in winter?

Many Canadians enjoy adding weight to their vehicles over the winter to increase traction. How does it work? Since friction is force normal times mu, thus having a greater force normal means more friction. However since mu is usually so small, the increase in friction is negligible as compared to momentum. The momentum from added weight, mass times velocity would be dramatically increases, meaning longer distances to stop and easier fish tails around corners. Therefore less weight is more benficial. This is my logic, and I may be wrong. I don't know, thats why I'm asking...

Magnetic field redirection? Answered

Hi, I've never seen a community so welcoming and intuitive than the instructables community, so I decided this website is the best place to ask my question. I'm sure there is someone hidden deep within the fathoms of instructables that is versed in the matter of magnetic field redirection. I'm working on a project that I will post an 'ible of, (truly wireless speakers ;)) but I need some method of redirecting a magnetic field so it doesn't interfere with the speakers. I have heard of some methods, i.e. Mu metals, MagnetShield, but these are not easy to come by, especially in the UK. I have considered ordering from the manufacturer, but I am not willing to pay the exorbitant shipping costs. I would firstly like to know if such a material exists, or if alternative/better/cheaper methods are available, secondly, whether or not it can be procured in the UK, and if so, where, and thirdly, proper application of such a material. I have done lots of research into the matter, but have been left fruitless. I'm sure someone can help.                                                                 Merry Christmas,                                                                                             icyseptember

old idea new twist, want to build a programmable music box can't figure out the hinge circuit

I'm converting a chest into a large music box i need to find a way to have a specific song downloaded to a chip or maybe a old cellphone i thought ,then set up to play when the box opens.I'd really like to know the name of the circuit that works on the principles of two objects separating to complete the circuit. Thanks to anyone who tries

Question by 9 years ago  |  last reply 9 years ago

Do you think this circuit will work?

Ok, for a robot I'm designing, I need to control some USB motors via software. I want to do this without using a microcontroller, as the computer should already have all the fundamentals. I have designed a simple circuit and attached an image below, do you think this will work? What I want to do is send a signal to the motor, that, as long as it is on, will keep the motor on.

The dummies are full of fireworks, and went lit on at 1 or 2 am on the first day of January. Here is midsummer, with great heat. Burning New Year dolls is a tradition that has decades in the city. Almost every neighborhood makes its dummy, some very good, some acceptable, others ugly, but the task helps the boys (and many adults) to experience the problems of organization, design, implementation, coexistence, getting resources, etc. This country and its people deserve a better government that it has today. UTF-8 Bugs

Adding extended UTF-8 characters to Instructables works the first time, but if I edit the page, the editor replaces them all with broken characters instead. I have to manually edit all the characters back before hitting save, or the broken characters are propagated to the web. The characters that I have tried are capital omega (Ω) and the degree sign (°), and I plan to use lower-case mu (μ) in the future. Also, the bug posting form seems to be much more broken in this regard.

Is it possible to virtually install from recovery discs?

I have a new macbook pro that comes preinstalled with snow leopard. Upon digging in the attic, my brother found mac os 9 and the recovery discs for my dad's macbook pro (the old model, 2006, preinstalled with tiger). I was curious if there was a way to virtually install tiger (like using virtualbox). The reason I want this is because I want the classic environment to play some old games, and I tried Sheep Shaver for mac os 9, but it crashed when I tried to play the game. From what I understand, tiger was the last to support the classic environment.

How do I change my desktop without spending too much money?

I found a nice desk that fits perfectly in the small space I have for it, yet it's big enough for my multiple monitors. The problem is that the veneer (a plasticky thin top) has a horrible color and it's also stained. So I want to change the desktop color (to white) by using some sort of contact or adhesive paper, but I went to Home Depot and Lowes, and they only have that thin kitchen contact paper, which is very prone to scratches. Is there something I can use to put on top of my desktop to change the color, but resistant enough to use it without any protection. I don't want to spend too much money and I don't have the room to actually change the veneer. Any suggestions?

Cheap CD Player + Good Speakers = Not Very Load Music...Help!!!

Not really sure if this is the right place to post this as im new to the site but heres my problem. Im off to a festival soon and i always take my own music for before and after the bands. This year however im broke and only have a small cheap portable CD player of about 2 Watts. I have some nice big powerful speakers, but the volume for the CD player just isn't load enough and im only getting so much volume out of the speakers. Can anyone let me in on what i need to make an amp to boost the sound, or maybe something else that would help get more sound out of a small crappy CD player. Im not that technically minded and as i said i don't have much cash to spend, but im willing to give it a shot, any help would be appreciated thanks.

Topic/comment editing -- HTML entities not handled correctly

I've been updating one of my forum topics today, and I have seen some annoying bugs in the handling of HTML entities and special characters. In the original topic text, I made use of three HTML entities (&...;): the open and close square brackets (numeric entities #91 and #93) and the Greek letter mu (entity "micro"). In the initial posting, all these entities are translated correctly. What I have seen is that if I then "Edit Topic", the text is not "inverted" correctly: The entities are preserved as their corresponding ASCII characters. For the square brackets, which I had entered as entities specifically so they would not be interpreted as signaling a hyperlink, that interpretation occurs and messes up my text. For the micro entity, a sequence of invalid additional characters (angstrom and question mark) get prepended to it on each edit/publish cycle.Obviously I can (and did, half a dozen times) go through and re-repair all of these mistakes, but it's pretty annoying :-(

What material works best as a CORE for a small coil at about 500 hertz?

I am building a small coil with 1000 turns of 36 gauge wire wound around it.  A 12 volt/ 500 hertz squarewave will feed the coil.   I want to receive this 500 hertz tone a few feet away using a sensitive receiver that i have.   However, i am having trouble figuring out what kind of CORE to use and where to purchase it.  I built several coils using various items such as steel, iron, and ferrite from a flyback transformer.  So far, the plain old STEEL works the best, but I keep thinking something else might work better.   I searched the internet, but it starts to get really confusing because of all the terminology like "flux density", permeability, field strength, mu, etc etc.  It must be something that does not retain magnetism when the coil is de-energized.  Any help would be appreciated !

Farewell my community

I just want to take this chance to say goodbye. As most (if not all) of you, probably don't know, I am a mormon of missionary age. I received my call to Billings, Montana and report on the 24th of July, though I don't know how much I'll be on the site between now and then. Thank you to all the awesome people on this site who have put up with and answered the questions I've asked when not thinking (really, go back and read them), and all you awesome people who have commented on my instructables and given feedback. I will be gone for the next two years, so if it seems like I've gone comatose, it's because for all intents and purposes, I have. If you have any questions regarding my instructables, I won't be able to answer them after I report, but other members of the community, and my brother (should he choose to reveal himself) should be able to answer your questions. Till we meet again in two years, I fare thee well.

Help with repairing a Microsoft Sidewinder X4?

Hello all! I recently moved in my recently made desk, only mu keyboard sustained some damage in transit, from a lamp falling upon it. Neither a re-plug in nor a reboot would et it working again. It wasn't being detected by the computer at all. I opened it up, (off warranty anyway) to check for anything obvious. I checked all the connections, and re-seated them. Then examined all the wiring for any defects. I reassembled everything, and checked it to see if it would work. Alas, ir did not. I swapped back in my old keyboard, but after some jostling, the Sidewinder was re-detected. It remained functional for only around five minutes, after which the space-bar seemed to be repeatedly being pressed multiple times a second, then it stopped cold. I redid all my software fixes, including a reboot, but it did not regain any functionality. Any help would be appreciated, and I'm hopeful.
