Vises, The Instructables' Newsletter, & Top 5's

This is a forum topic that I've been wanting to publish for the past week, but I wasn't able to because of a bug. 18 emails to service later, here I am: I recently published two Instructables: How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise, and Top 10 Vise Hacks!. After being featured in the newsletter, How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise got ~20K views, and Top 10 Vise Hacks. got ~50K views. Now that makes no sense (to me. Wouldn't someone that was interested in an Instructable about tips, tricks, and hacks for your vise wouldn't be interested in how to make a vise? 1.5X more? That makes no sense... (I would think that there would be a difference of 10-20%, but 200%?) Also, speaking of the newsletter, it would be awesome to receive an email at the end of the year, that shows the most viewed Instructables that were posted this year. This could be a nice feature... In my opinion, the thumbnail for How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise was taken on a white background and is really good, and the thumbnail for Top 10 Vise Hacks doesn't have text, and isn't very good. I think you'll agree with me on this... After the views from the newsletter had started to slow down to about 1000 every day, Top 10 Vise Hacks was featured again, in the "top 5 most viewed Instructables of the week" which has brought it to 98K views already. Does that mean that SO MANY people have missed it from the newsletter? That's also weird... Another thing is that my Instructable on How to Build a Wooden Drill-Press Vise has a fairly good thumbnail, and was put on the Homepage. However, my Instructable on How to Make a Wooden 6" Bench-Vise wasn't, while I think the thumbnail is WAAAY better.  What do you think? :)

link follow from 'Advertise on Instructables' page

When on the Advertise on Instructables page, there's a section of text after the graph "Instructables offers rich media display ads ... We also offer custom campaigns opportunities that include: highly integrated homepage skins, brand centric contests and newsletter placements". The hyperlink for newsletter doesn't work as intended. When I follow the link the page reloads with the top navigation bar and the channels on the side, with white space where content should be. The title reads "exploring: community_blog", here's the url displayed in my address bar: https://www.instructables.com/tag/category-community_blog/keyword-newsletter/ I think the link should be for the forum category Newsletter Archive: https://www.instructables.com/community?categoryGroup=forums&category;=newsletter_archive, but this also comes back weird. Title bar only, no navagation on the side and small font reading "no topics yet" (But the Newsletter Archive reads as having 99 posts and 93 replies). Using FF 3.6.13

This is what happens when you're on the frontpage

Here are graphs of the stats of two of my instructables. They clearly shows that being on the frontpage or featured in the weekly newsletter really gives you a boost. The Marble Clock (the graph with 0-5000 as the scale for pageviews) got in the frontpage as Popular in the afternoon the 14'th, you can clearly see the rate increase of pageviews. The Spooky Led Lamp (the graph with 0-10000 as the scale for pagevews) made it to the Weekly Newsletter sent to the subscribers in the eventing the 14'th. As can be seen on the graph the numbers of pageviews increased really fast at the next few hours then went back to the normal pace again. In contrast to what happened with the Marble Clock this instructable also got a real boost in the ratings due to the newsletter. Here's a link to the Instrugraph Instructable.

Heads up - we're sending out extra Halloween-themed newsletter this October!

Esteemed Instructabots, For the month of October, your favorite yellow robot will be sending out some extra newsletters with special Halloween content. We’re trying to get the best Halloween costume, props, and decoration projects out to you in enough time for you to make something for yourself before All Hallows’ Eve at the end of October. We normally send general interest newsletters on Sunday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Those will still arrive in your inbox and will continue to show off awesome recent projects. We will also be running one Halloween-themed newsletter every day of the week throughout October. They’ll feature themed collections of projects like “Couples costumes,” “Halloween Makeup,” and “Epic Costumes” with the best content from the past several years. Check your email, get inspired, and make something awesome this Halloween. You’ve got 31 days to make something awesome. Not to mention contests for Food, Decorations, Props, and Costumes. You could win a DSLR, tablet or other awesome things just for sharing what you made! You’re welcome to sift through all 2000 projects on your own (and make a collection of your favorites using our tools or Pinterest’s) if our themes don’t quite match what you’re looking for.

Dual Emai Messages

Why is it that I get an email with the instructable from... Instructables newsletter@instructables.com Then usually within the same day I get a duplicate message from Instructables newsletter@instructables.com via me-ss2-6zuaan.mailengine1.com The duplicated message shows up as BLANK from Google Gmail... unless I click on DETAILS... but then it is the exact same email I got from Instructables newsletter@instructables.com Why is that? And how do I stop it? It started a month or so ago... it's annoying. Thanks, Jerry

Subscription Email

I love this website and enjoy my weekly newsletter of new Instructables. Originally, I had them going to my spam-catcher email (I do that when I sign up for something new), but want it to come to my regular email now. My main account settings now has my regular email address, but the newsletter still went to the old one. Private messages and comment updates go to the new email just fine. Finally, I turned off the subscriptions to that old email address. Oops... Now I don't get the weekly at all! I tried to find where to subscribe to the newsletter and all I get is a page that is essentially for new accounts: it wants a NEW address and won't accept my current email address, saying it's already in use. Well no kidding! It's my email address and that's where I want the newsletter to go!!! So how the heck do I subscribe to the weekly newsletter using my current account settings' regular email address?

Newsletter via gmail and then into wlmail

I'd like to keep receiving e newsletters but they have always been 'bad'. They never come out correctly in my wlmail client. It is basically a series of boxes with a cross at top. When I press a cross it opens up IE which I never use (FF only) and here is the page it takes me to with various instructions as to why something went wrong. Yours is the only newsletter this happens to. here is the link. wlmailhtml:{48885E4E-20F8-40C1-884E-4419D44A59F6}mid://00000337/!x-usc:http://app.streamsend.com/c/17630013/448983/9rLucy9/Bfu4?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.instructables.com%2F for design square I got this in IE wlmailhtml:{48885E4E-20F8-40C1-884E-4419D44A59F6}mid://00000337/!x-usc:http://app.streamsend.com/c/17630013/448985/9rLucy9/Bfu4?redirect_to=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.instructables.com%2Fcontest%2Fdesign2012%2F

OPENDNS is blocking access to streamsend links in your mailings

The OPENDNS DNS lookup and anti-phishing service I've used for the last few years has suddenly  decided that the streamsend redirected links in the Instructables weekly newsletters are an attempt at phishing.  I am able to access the instructables web site directly, but I can't follow links from your emails any more. I receive the weekly newsletter through Yahoo email. My older Instructables newsletters that I was previously able to read are having their streamsend links blocked too. This is a problem between streamsend and OPENDNS.  However, Instructables is affected by this if they're a customer of streamsend.

A couple of months back my Newsletter started apparing with red x images and links that click to "Address not Valid". ?

Instructables is on my safe sender list, Outlook Express is set to allow images.  Other emails with images get through fine.  Only Instructables has problems. Any ideas to get things back to "normal"?

E-mail Newsletter

I am unable to access interesting topics from the newsletter directly.  I get this message when I click on a link: "Due to the presence of characters known to be used in Cross Site Scripting attacks, access is forbidden. This web site does not allow Urls which might include embedded HTML tags." I am using a web mail (cox) and chrome.  Your e-mail doesn't have a link on top for "if you can't see this in your browser", which would be nice as going to the home page doesn't show the current e-mail information.  ie Sonic Screwdriver by MrTinkerer   I've never seen the above warning before and it doesn't sound like one I want to see.  ;-}

Information page not accurate?

I noticed on another author's information page (accessed when you double click on stat card) that he had an achievement patch for being in the newsletter. I also noticed that his featured articles were marked with a banner. I had an instructible shown in the 9/30/2010 newsletter and have had one instructible featured (at least at the technology level). How do you get the achievement patch and featured instructibles marked?

Valentine's Day Inspiration

After getting our first newsletter, Roger sent me this really nice thank you note and pictures of his project. Maybe his inspiration can inspire you? There's still a little time left!I want to thank you for this newsletter. I was at a loss as to what to get/make for my wife for Valentines Day and our 15th anniversary. After reading your newsletter and going to your web site, I was inspired. I made her 15 Duct Tape roses (14 purple ( her favorite color), and 1 Red for passion) , one for each year we have been married. Off the web site's Valentines Day projects, I made an acrylic heart with LEDs to light it up. I added an acrylic tube to act as a vase for the roses. Thank you for the inspiration, Roger

Pumpkin-carving resource

I know it's early, but there's no harm in being prepared, and, who knows, you might want to practice? I came across the Extreme Pumpkins website via Randy Cassingham's This Is True* newsletter. It's full of photos of past years' pumpkins, as well as free patterns and pumpkin-related tutorials (such as how to illuminate your carvings with road flares, and the proper use of power tools when carving). Go, be inspired, and then come back and show us what you made. *If you are afraid of thought-provoking journalism, do not subscribe to the This is True newsletter.

Login doesn't return me to correct 'ble

It's extremely irritating that when I follow a link from the daily newsletter and then have to login in order to be able to "see all steps on one page", I'm not returned to the story/'ble I wanted to see. There doesn't appear to be any way to get back there. I've tried logging in, then returning to newsletter and clicking link again because at some sites you stay logged in... nope, nothing seems to work. I don't know how to view a whole freaking story on one page if I want to see a story from the newsletter. /ack FYI: I'm using Windows xP and Firefox. I've cleared the cache. I'm accepting cookies. Thanks for any assistance anyone may be able to give! Oh - I should also mention that this has been happening since I went Pro, two computers, two operating systems, and three browsers ago... /ack

We released a new version of Instructables last night with a bunch of cool things: New footer with links to the blog, newsletters, and store Newsletter archive When you reply to a comment, everyone upstream in the nested comments gets a notification Spell checker Non-ASCII characters stripped from human-readable URLs Carriage returns are no longer stripped from personal messages Only 50 orangeboard posts on /you making the page load faster And a bunch of other changes and additions under the hood making the site better and easier for us to manage. Have fun, and let us know what you think!

No effect of email change

Hi although I've changed my contact email to some other account I'm still receiving newsletters and other email from Instructables on the old one. Please fix this, because it's extremely annoying. Regards Marcin

Randofo subscription bug/mistake?

I've got a funny bug: I logged in into Windows Live and: 25 subscription updates! From: randofo. It were all newsletter things, like: BP Costume, Tweeting Snuggie, Tusken Raider you know? If i opened the link, 9 of 10 times there was a screen that i only could see the forum topic if i was pro member. i was getting all pro member ad's and all that things. Somebody help? I don't know if i missed some newsletters? It was weird, please help? (by the way, how can i find my printscreens on my computer?) here's a pic:  (all those black things are subscriptions updates)
