UPCOMING K'NEX CHALLENGE! I know a bunch of you will be getting new K'nex this year and since you have time off from school I thought another K'nex Weekly Challenge would be perfect! This Challenge is open to all types of K'nex projects, but I want to see some originality and some mind-blowing entries and not just the run-of-the-mill type guns. The Weekly Make It Challenge: K'nex will run from December 26, 2011-January 1, 2012. I'll link to the Challenge page when it goes live. i'm giving you plenty of lead time to brainstorm awesome entries, so save up your K'nex projects for the next week and then enter to win some great prizes! This page will be updated with any new information until the Challenge goes live, and then again when the Challenge starts.

This is the current version of my semi automatic K'nex gun. I probably won't change much unless I run into a big problem. The only real problem now is that the magazine isn't perfect, but that's pretty hard anyway. It works like the prototype I posted a topic about a few days ago ( I deleted that, didn't want 2 topics on the same gun ) So that means by clipping the trigger onto the firing pin. When you pull the trigger it pulls the pin back and then lets go near the end of it's travel distance. Then the trigger shoots back into place again ( if you let it shoot, you can't keep your finger on the trigger at all times ). The only thing about this that I copied 100% is Perfect Duck's handle. I'm really lazy with handles, so credit for that goes to him. I also used decapitated grey connectors in the barrel like on his guns. It shoots blue rods.I can put at least 2 thick rubberbands on it ( I only have 2 left, don't know exactly how much power it can take ), so it can support quite some power. It won't shoot very far because of the friction though. But I think it's respectable considering it's a semi-auto. P.S. I know the picture is bad, I always tend to build these things in the evening so the lighting is pretty bad when I take a pic.

Well I'm looking around but I really don't have the time or the patience to continue. I have homework to get to so I'm hoping you guys can find me some good deals on K'nex. I'm looking for something that -Is no more than $60 or so. I really don't feel like spending a lot. I don't plan on starting up a huge stockpile. I simply want enough to build practical weapons and maybe two smaller weapons at time. -Contains some black/clear rods. I only have one clear rod. I had another but I lost it. -Has some exotics. I don't care if I only get like 2 of each but I'd love some more hinges and ball joints. Some more black Ys wouldn't hurt either. Small wheels would be a nice addition but I don't require them. Some blue caps would also be lovely. Small bendies are nice too. -Obviously I'd like a nice mix of normal pieces. Green and white rods, and yellow connectors are my main concern though. I could use more of everything but those three are probably the most used in the majority of weapons. They're usually the only pieces I run out of. Metallics would be nice though I don't care what colors they are -Finally, I don't want bricks or minis. Almost every set in town is half bricks and/or minis and I don't feel like paying extra for those. If some are included, fine as long as I get a what would be a good deal without them. If I finally get some more pieces, I'll be able to build guns made by others and start some new projects. I've been looking forward to reviewing guns in a strict manner.

I recently purchased a small lot of K'Nex parts to add to my collection. Included in the lot was the 12-volt K'Nex electric motor that you plug into a wall outlet. Unfortunately, the lot did not include the box/documentation for the motor, and more importantly, it did not include the AC adapter required to run the motor. I have a big box of AC adapters from various electronics collected over the years, so I likely have one that is a suitable replacement. However, I can't seem to find out what the amp draw is for the motor. I've looked elsewhere on the web but have not been able to find this information. So I was wondering if someone who actually has the original AC adapter for the motor can look at it and give me it's specifications and perhaps a model number? Thanks!

It will be running from 4/13-5/25 and while I can't get into prize specifics until the contest launches, I can tell you that we are teaming up with K'NEX to bring you bigger, better, more awesome prizes than ever before! We can't wait to see what you make!

INSTRUCTABLE DONE!!! LinkThis is the new grenade i talked about in my new magazine forum topic: HereIt uses a spring motor that is activate by pushing up the pin on the bottom (after being cranked) to fling shrapnel to distances not achievable by your average run-of-the-mill grenades...or should I say blunt throwing objects...*cough cough*. On average, this grenade can fling various shrapnel (green rods, ball joints and connectors, etc...) up to 25 feet. The best feature of the grenade, besides its blast radius, is how YOU DON'T NEED TO REASSEMBLE IT; you just reload the shrapnel, and toss again.I also have a slightly different version of this that can be fired from a Knex RPG!!!!! (coming later this year, because the M4 is using most of my pieces). If you want i will post an instructable for it but you can probably build from pictures.

K'NEX CONTEST IS CLOSED! Check out the WINNERS! Update: August 20, 2013 The winners have been announced, check them out here. Thanks again everyone for such amazing entries. We had 12 judges rack their brains over all the entries, the tallied results were very close - the sign of a very hard contest to judge. The technical merits of the projects cannot be understated, all of the entries were original and very creative. Great work, look for something like this to happen again next year! Update: August 14, 2013 We've just wrapped up the K'NEX (and LEGO) contest(s), and I'm happy to say that you guys did not disappoint! With such a diverse and technical array of projects, I have my work cut out for me to try and pick the finalists. I'd like to thank everyone who entered, and a special thanks to those who created more than one entry. Before this contest started, running a K'NEX-themed contest was an unknown. The K'NEX community here has always been a strong and independent, and I didn't want to engage with you and run a contest if I couldn't serve your interests. There was some contention about hosting a contest that may (probably would) involve a fair amount of weaponry. While this is a valid concern I feel like that is part of the fabric that makes the community here so great. It was important for me to have a mix of projects that covered all areas of K'NEX. I am proud to say that the majority of the weapons that were entered were well photographed and professionally presented. I'm looking forward to making this an annual thing for you, but could use your feedback to make it even better next time! If you have any feedback on what you'd like to see differently please feel free to leave a comment below, or send me a PM. I'm going to hide out for the next few days and pour over the entries to try and nit-pick all 200 entries into just 18 finalists. Thank you, everyone, for making this contest such a success. _mike Editor of Play, Instructables.com

Hi everyone, I am a long-time knex gun user and Instructable maker, you probably don't remember me because I am using this new account and my old one has been inactive for years. More to the point, i am going to hold a knex gun instructable contest not run by the site administrators. Because of this, the only reward is fame and glory among the knexers' What you need to do to be in this contest is make an instructable of a knex gun and give the link to it on this forum. You will have to design a gun that you do not cock, has no block trigger, and has a very easy instructable. A few suggestions for this design are listed below. Technical requirements: ~ The gun must have no block trigger ~ The gun must shoot any rod ranging from the smallest size to the second largest - red suggestions for making a far better gun than anyone else: ~ make as many extra / removable components as possible ~ make a hopper or way to have multiple shots at one time in the gun ~ use as few and as simple foreign objects as you can get your hands on ~ Make the gun with less than 250 pieces ~ Make the instructable as good as you can, after all, even if you get the gun, you have to show it here!

This is a small ball machine that I made while I was sitting in my bedroom thinking about my childhood. I was origionally going to post it, but it didn't quite turn out the way I intended. Its small, and is fun to show to guests and whatnot. For those wondering about the name, me and my buddy had just finished editing the video. I realised that I needed a name for it, and just that moment my buddy's bird puked on my head, making a splat sort of sound. Presto, the name splat.Since the video wasn't going to be anything special, I put it to ragtime music and aged it accordingly. Hope you like it!IaC EditI've counted the pieces. Just for the heck of it, I'll run a little contest to see who can guess closest to the real number. The prize is a virtual high five and cookie. Closes on Friday.Updated - Winners! The correct answer is... (drum roll)... 1749! This means that cj81499 is the clear winner, being off by only 14 pieces! Good job, and congratulations! Thanks for guessing everyone.

I am trying to biuld a k'nex, pump-action, dropdown magisine, with stock and sight. I have everything running smothley apart from the magisine & i need help! The things i am looking for is,... # The magisine has to be removable. #The magisine runs smothley without cataching or jaming. #The magisine has a good amount of shots. #It must include a clip to go on the gun for it to slide and clip into. #And it must have a tensile to push the shots into the chamber. If somone manages to do this and follow all of the things obove I will post an instructable about my gun. With all credit to your name for the magisine. (I tryed to add pictures but my camera was playing up).

Ok, for those of you who had seen my shotgun design, you could probably tell it was over before it had even started. I had tried 5 different layouts and I couldn't get past the frontmost barrel without running into problems. I think it was a cool design, but it was just too much for K'nex. Most of my best get designs just pop into my head at the most random times. Is it just me, or does this happen to other people too? Anyways I was trying to make it until the bell in pre-cal (my teacher is a crazy cat woman who enjoys talking about her imaginary husband) and I just started drawing this design. Not only did it kill 10 minutes but it may just be the best thing I've come up with in terms of K'nex. The magazine looking thing in front of the handle is actually the driving mechanism in this gun. Shots are housed in the stock pressing up against the pusher. When the pump is pulled, the pusher moves down, allowing two bullets (one shot) into the chamber. When the pump is released, the pusher pushes the bullets up against an upper section, where they wait for the trigger so be pulled, releasing the ratchet and the rubber band, launching the two bullets with a decent (I hope) spread. Even though it doesn't shoot yet it is fun to just load the ammo (thats just how cool this gun it). It is probably going to be a little different than what is shown in the video by the time I post it, but right now I'm just going with what I have. I hope you like it and please let me know of any improvements you can come up with. -Kinetic

So it's been a while but I want to post some more stuff here and I would like to get some ideas. I know this has been done a million time but I need a few ideas to get my brain running! And the funny thing is that I have some ideas but I never got around to them so I will put them down here to see what you guys can do! Cryptex I have tried this many times but I have never figured it out. Ball machine in a tree I just don't have the parts but it would be super cool! Modular marble run I may try this my self! See if you can beat me to it! Don't ask about the picture I just like it.

This is a video of me spinning up hurricane balls with an air compressor. I have gotten them faster (I estimate this run got up to about 10,000rpm) but it is still very cool. The second part of the video is some random thing I made when I was bored. It just spins a marble really fast inside the container. I know it's not very exciting :P haha please comment and rate! hm...the video won't embed so just go here.

Hi, I am making my 2 first guns at the same time, they are of different types. the first one is your run of the mill sniper with the bolt action, modded sprinkler and barrel LEDs, this one shoots big marbles and the traditional potato. the second one is not as constructed as I started it when I got tired of making the first one ( I swap between them depending on which one i feel like making) anyway it shoots the small type of marbles, but this one uses a hammer valve Which I'll try to explain now, the cylinder is pressurised to about 100 psi, the hammer is drawn forward which pulls the whole barrel forward, this is then caught on a sear trigger, when the trigger is pulled the barrel is pulled back by rubber bands and hits the hammer valve, this opens the seal allowing air to escape, then once the projectile has been fired a spring pushes the valve closed, blocking the air, there is an animation that helps exlain it down the bottom (it isn't mine but works on the same principle) also I am not going to make a magazine for it as I cant find a way to make sure only 1 marble falls into the barrelP.S if you find anything wrong with my designs tell me as I am only 13 and these are my first gunsP.P.S I will only be able to post around new year as I am busy with exams and the suchP.P.P.S If i am to make the hammer valve gun first it will take longer because I am not as far advanced in itthanks for reading be sure to check my topics on some of the aspects of the designs:optimisation of pneumaticsbest chamber to barrel ratio

I have some small blocks of granite and marble that were left over from some builder's samples. I was thinking that it might be cool to make some whiskey stones with them, but I don't have any special stone cutting equipment. I don't need them to be perfect cubes or anything, a rough look is alright. Is this something that I might be able to accomplish using a hammer and chisel or by using a certain type of saw blade? I'd like to get an idea of what might work best before I run out and buy something only to find out it's not going to work like I want it too.

Well. I have decided to retire from K'Nex on this website. I will still be an active member on Knexables (http://knexables.uuuq.com) and Knex Innovation (http://knexinnovation.net) but I have no longer got time for this website. I will still post some projects about music and guitar, but no more K'Nex. I simply don't have any time to pick up my K'Nex with my paper run and my guitar, and because I have exams in two weeks and then I have a massive project due, I may not get the chance to use it till about 6 weeks away. I WILL however do one last project before I leave here. I have got an Idea but I want some community suggestions. If it is possible, I will post an ible.Till then. ajleece

This is another one of those ideas I had for awhile hoping I could eventually use for myself but I don't think I'll ever get to a ball machine. K'nex is dieing hobby for me. Anyways the concept is pretty simple. As long as you don't have any other motorized moving parts and all you need is a lift, this should work. What if you just made a simple rubber band powered sling? You could have 2+ balls running on the track. One hits the bottom and then stays right over the launcher. Another ball will pass over a trigger device that shoots the launcher and the the ball flings upwards. Suppose it could work? The trigger device would be a little tricky but if you end up getting it to work, plenty more people could make ball machines if they don't have motors. Of course you'd be limited to the amount of bands you could place on the device but that's better than nothing.

After looking around, I have decided to make a Mini-Instructable (Therefore Forum Topic) about how to not be a noob. This will be targeted for Instructables, but most goes on any site. It is also partly targeted on knexers. Step one, The name.Well, a lot goes by what your name is, don't say something like I_Love_Knex_Guns, choose something like Dsman, TheDunkis, Kiteman,Adrian Monk, Goodhart, Dj Radio, Jollex or The Jamalam. Also, try to use one that you use on other Websites, like Mepain, Kiteman or DutchJStep Two, the profile pic, Well, most people hate people who don't even change their display pic, so try to AT LEAST change it a bit. Some people actually use photoshop, like Dsman, or go even further and get one specially crafted by a true master ( IE Oblivitus) Try to get something that reflects either your name, or your interests.Step Three, ActivityWell, posting some Comments is Vital, and the whole point of Intructables is Instructables is just that, Post some Ibles! Don't be all nutty saying "This is my first Instructable, So be nice!'Forum topics are also quite important.Step four, Grammar Grammar is not a NOOB issue, but a lot more people will like you, and try to help improve it that way. Also, there is a Spell check button RIGHT beside the buttons near the Post sign, so USE IT!Step five, Activity Part two ( Bonus Points)Some things that are help you get more popular is greeting new people with nice warm welcomes. Jollex has done this quite often, with a personally Knex-related greeting, as have many other people. Another thing people do is search "knex" and the go to recent, and post something nice on all the new ibles (Block triggers and Et Cetrea Exempt)Example of a great welcome.Welcome!I noticed you'd joined the site, and also that you seem to be a K'NEX fan. That's brilliant! We have a lot of keen K'NEXers here, and we're quite a busy community on the site. Can I ask you to remember a few things, though? We are keen to show off K'NEX in its best light here, so please read these points carefully:(if you don't you run the risk of being labeled as a "noob")Pictures. One of the keys to a good Instructable is good photography. Please, don't use photos where the important bits are too small to see, or out of focus. Use good lighting and the macro mode of your camera. If you do not have macro, make sure things are in focus, then use an image editor to crop off the bits you don't need. Even Paint will do this.Text.This site is used by people all over the world. Lots of them don't speak English as their first language, and use translation websites to read your work. Please, do your best to use proper spelling and grammar, and avoid things like "u", and "r".GunsNow, as K'NEX gunners, we are dedicated to innovation. Innovative guns are what the K'NEXers what to see. But don't limit your self to guns, as some K'NEXers are annoyed by all the guns. And, please, no more little 12 piece guns.More! You know K'NEX is about more than guns, and so do I, so let's see your other projects - have you designed a clever robot arm? A new vehicle? A ball-sorter? Show us!Again, welcome to the site, and to the K'NEX community, and thank you for taking the time to read these hints. For more info click here.>Your name here<Well thanks, and I don't really think this needs a Whole ible, but If anyone wants to collaborate one, PM Me.

Okay. 1st off, sorry about my long absence. I had a busy summer, and I'm kinda running low on motivation. I'm going to be checking back regularly soon though. 2nd off, sorry if I missed some of your folks comments. When I came back a few weeks ago I had a few hundred comments that I tried to respond to, so if I missed any or your questions or such, please post them again here. My bad. 3rd, I'm going to be posting a video of a huge project I've recently finished. No instructions, as its rather unique to my bathroom *cough*cough*. Also, I've decided I've had it with my danged safe. I'm going to strip away the casing I made and just post instructions for the new mech. I'm really just out of motivation for the project, and others have posted safes and such too, so its not so new and cool anymore. And finally, I want to build a cannon bigger than the V1. Will happen this winter hopefully. Thanks folks, ~IaC

Greetings! I've decided to run a small contest, in the hopes of us folk here at instructables coming up with some new and exciting ball machine elements and lifts. All you need to do is post a photo and description (video would be awesome too!) of your newfangled ball machine element or lift in the comments below. The criteria you will be judged by are originality, execution and aesthetics. The deadline is October 31st, giving you a whole month to work on your elements/lifts. Judging will be done my myself, and the winner will be announced shortly after. The winner will receive a 3 month Pro Membership, and if there are 10 or more entries, the winner will receive a 1 year Pro membership, and the runner up a 3 month Pro Membership. Good luck to all! -IaC Update: Winner announced! Judging has taken place! There were many good entries - I thank you all for your participation. The winner I have chosen is Martijnd95 with his concave bowl. He will receive a 3 month pro membership for his creation. Thanks everybody!

Oh the joy of Twitter! I just found out about this very cool contest from Discover Magazine via BoingBoing: Imagine having your own personal satellite orbiting the Earth. It’s got cameras and sensors galore, and you can use it to run experiments, take pictures, and even beam messages back to the blue marble. Well, that geek fantasy will become a reality if the ArduSat project, which you can see here on Kickstarter, reaches its funding goal. The general public will be able to rent time on this small satellite and use it for whatever they please, courtesy of its Arduino processor. [The folks] at Discover Magazine think this is pretty neat. And [they'd] like to give away a development kit worth $1500 to the Kickstarter donor who submits the best idea for an in-space experiment before July 15th, 2012. The kit includes Arduinos and an advanced sensor suite shipped to your home address, as well as one week of up-time on the satellite to run any experiment. You’ll be able to build the experiment yourself and have it be sent up on ArduSat when it takes to the skies. Here’s what you have to do to enter the (drumroll) Discover Space Challenge: (1) Fund the ArduSat project, for however much or little as you desire. You’ll receive a personal code that identifies you as a donor. (2) Read the contest guidelines here to learn about how you should design and submit your idea. (3) Enter with this entry form, making sure to include your personal code. (4) Wait for winners to be announced on July 20th, after judging by Discover blogger Phil Plait, Discover Editor-in-Chief Corey Powell, and an expert panel of judges. (5) Rejoice!

I really need to stop now. I'm running out of numbers until I reach 4.0 T_T This one takes inspiration from killerk's futile attempts at improving a Dunkis weapon. Everyone knows that only the true master can improve his own weapons muahahhaha! Kidding... but I just didn't like how the magazine on his looks and you know me and how picky I am about fashionable practicality...if that exists. I left the entire back of the gun intact. The only major changes happened to the magazine. I did away with the tilter in favor of a locking magazine like the 3.3 and Killerk's version. And...that's pretty much it. It seems to be perfectly reliable but so was the 3.7. This one just doesn't require those mini k'nex adapters to do so. Oh actually I did modify the clips I use a bit so that you can keep them in the gun. This allows you to push them in without needing to lock the magazine and then fire the gun normally. I think you could use these with the 3.7 if you wanted to. So yeah, here's my video with a tad bit of Russian thrown in for no particular reason...I had some Coke before hand >_> And for some reason it won't embed so here's the link... Video Speed Load Video

(a few tiny ideas) Basically a toy chainsaw that can cut through paper. Using hobby-R/C-like parts such as those tiny light motors would be a start. Reduced size, like a cellphone at most, mountable on a figurine soldier would be great. The miniature mortar should throw marbles on "mortar trajectories", you should be able to set the angle of the launch and (optionally) somehow the speed, though this wouldn't be necessary if the angle part is done well and the power is relatively constant at all shots. For ease it should be built only for angles above 45 degrees and the angle slider (or whatever the solution) should have marks (ticks) such that a user can remember and even create tables if he so wishes, in his war against coffee cups. Simplest solutions of "powering" would be rubber bands or coils from broken toys. A ping pong blower would be a tiny but strong fan (brushless outrunner motor) that keeps a ping pong ball "levitating" in mid-air straight up, but most excitingly even blown under an angle too. This wouldn't be a problem (physics takes care of it alone) just that the mount of the fan (ducted or not) should be operated and tilted as needed. This "levitron" would be a nice display on the desk running as long there's juice in the battery or else. Sorry if I'm not posting in the right place, these are just some ideas i'd love to build but i'm too clumsy and lazy :( Though my source of inspiration is the variety of USB gadgets commercially available, i'd like these to be more "free" and simpler if possible.

Want to get another patch? Last months desktop wallpaper thread did excellent, it would seem you loved the idea of getting some patches for your work. This month I am going to ask you to work harder for your patches! I want to encourage your creativity, so dig out one of your best digital photos, whip open photoshop, or show off a great new interface. All unique, creative and personal desktop screenshots will get a patch! Unique, creative and personal means we are looking for something new and fresh, not just a wallpaper grabbed off deviant art! Whether its a custom interface, or a home made wallpaper, just something that is unique to you. This month I have a couple of home made wallpapers to show off, I created both of these from scratch. By scratch I mean I actually cut up those bits of card, and glued those bits of marble. Both wallpapers were then accented and grunged up in photoshop. I then used geektool to match the type already on the card to make the date and time blend in. Tinkertool adds a few extras, including the modded dock, and menu bar items. Little Snitch runs in the menu bar, keeping an eye on what programs are doing. 3rd screen has a picture of my Fiance - as always :D 4th pictures shows my crazy screen set up! I proudly present to you TheDunKILLMeZak gun! lol idk just thought the name sounded funny anyways ive been pretty bored the past few night and had time to build after building both the MeZak and TheDunkis' Oodassault Pistol Version 3.6 i found a lot i liked about both guns and a lot i didn't like about both guns so i started modding... several hours later i ended up with this im not finished with it but it is basically TheDunkis' Oodassault Pistol Version 3.6 with MeZak's mag i modded both up a bit until i got the gun i was hoping for when i first built em both one key feature is the rubberband tightly wound around the bottom of the mag this applies pressure to it ensuring the mag pusher stays securely locked in place when pulled the mag tilts back as always however this time it stays in place on its own once loaded up just flick the mag forward and the mag snaps back into place and actually locks a bit which will forever prevent the mag from bouncing around when running or whatever anyways obviously credit goes to TheDunkis and Mepain and Zak and whomever else wants some credit... anyways i hope you all enjoy the mods and ill mostlikely continue working on the gun to improve it some more btw id love to here your feedback on the design let me know how it goes for you and GOOD LUCK! stripper clips! thanks for the ideas TheDunkis' n bakenbitz NEW vid up on youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DoCIkfMSxU btw i think im going to attempt to make a shotgun attachment for this gun that would mount to the top 11-1-10 *NEW pics NOTICE how the white rods are alternating in pic 3 this strengthens the gun further
