Free Design Course This October

I thought this looked like something that would appeal to other members of instructables. This coursera course  "Design: Creation of Artifacts in Society" is run by Professor Karl T. Ulrich from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. It is totally free and runs for 8 weeks from Oct 21st 2013: https://www.coursera.org/course/design?utm_classid=971091&utm;_nottype=course.newsession.signup&utm;_notid=1166&utm;_linknum=1 "This is a course aimed at making you a better designer. The course marries theory and practice, as both are valuable in improving design performance. Lectures and readings will lay out the fundamental concepts that underpin design as a human activity. Weekly design challenges test your ability to apply those ideas to solve real problems. The course is deliberately broad - spanning all domains of design, including architecture, graphics, services, apparel, engineered goods, and products"

October 2013 Build Night - Creative Reuse

This October we are hosting a creative re-use build night.  DETAILS: There is no formal sponsor for this build night, thus we won't be shipping out any materials. The goal is to use materials such as e-waste, trash, and found objects to create amazing projects during a build night at your makerspace. PRIZES: Submit Instructables from your creative re-use build night and enter to win a prize. We will have a panel of judges from the Instructables staff vote on the projects submitted and the winning makerspace will win 10 Instructables t-shirts and 30 Instructables patches for your makerspace. All projects must be submitted between October 1 - November 10. SIGN UP: Sign up to participate here. Signing up doesn't put you on the hook to submit Instructables. This is just so I have a general mailing list to send updates. It will also help us when picking the winners so we know you are a formal makerspace, hackerspace, school, fabrication lab, or student group. JOIN OUR ANNOUNCEMENT LIST If you are interested in being directly notified about future build nights fill out this form. You will receive an e-mail when the events are announced in the forums. If you have signed up for a past build night or this build night you are already on our announcement list. This build night was inspired by former Artist-In-Residence, long time author, and my good friend M.C. Langer (featured author interview). Check out his projects for some inspiration!

October Build Night with Dodocase at the Taipei Hackerspace

Hi everyone! We just had our recent Dodocase VR build night at the Taipei Hackerspace. I was a bit afraid beforehand because this is the first time we had a build night more around a complete product instead of a kit or parts, and was a bit out of ideas (beyond the ones mentioned in the announcement). It worked out pretty well, though, and a lot of people were interested in the kit and VR in particular, very useful for reachout. The projects made at the event: * Virtual Reality Kinetoscope Parlor * Low-magnification microscope * Recycling the packaging material for head mounts Attached some pictures from the results. We were also working on low-tech 3D viewing, such as printing images that could be used with the kit in the absence of a smartphone. Got some prototypes but they don't work reliably just yet. Need to figure out the field of view and positioning better. Cheers! Greg from the Taipei Hackerspace

October DODOCase Build Night at CC Makerspace

This week at the Chesterfield County Makerspace, we were lucky enough to host a DODO Case Instructables build night.  During the week beforehand, Doc and I sat around and brainstormed some ideas for case modifications that would help make the cases better.  We determined that a head strap is mandatory to enjoy any virtual reality games that require a controller. At the RVA Makerfest, we learned that we need a way to be able to clean the faceplate from the hundreds of people that we cycled through our DODOcase, so I designed the front faceplate to be 3D  printed.  In addition to 3D printing the faceplate, I also designed a nosepiece.  I found out, from hard experience, that the cardboard is very uncomfortable for wearing any longer than five minutes; we have access to ninjaflex filament here, so I knew a fix would be fairly easy.  Here are the separate instructables for our mods: Faceplate Nosepad Headstrap Over the course of the night we led two separate groups of kids in constructing their own cases.  We printed out enough nosepieces that everyone could use one, and had enough elastic strap for people to be able to had head straps to their goggles.  Once everybody got their goggles assembled, hilarity ensued as some of the kids almost walked into walls while enjoying their virtual environments.  A few problems we noticed:  not a lot of VR apps for apple devices, some devices do not cooperate with the magnetic switch (although the DODOCase V 1.2 fixes this), and some devices were too small even for the braces to hold them in.  However, everyone had a good time and we cannot wait for our next build session.  Thank you Instructables for allowing us to put on this event.

SoHa SMART's October 2014 Build Night with DODOcase

Getting down to business with DoDo Case at our recent board meeting where we were graciously given DoDo Case VR glasses by Instructables. http://www.dodocase.com/products/google-cardboard-vr-goggle-toolkit  for a build night!  It was a fascinating way to experience virtual reality on your smartphone and you know what they say; all work and no play...  We also created an Instructable in which one of our board members Ben Finio addresses the issues we though could be made better with the directions. Thank you Instructables team and DoDo Case VR for the great night and we look forward to many more!

Official Instructables UK Meet Up - October 30th 2010

Jayefuu and I are planning to run the second Instructables UK Meet Up. We did not publicise the first meet up too much, as with it being the first one we wanted to take things easy. Now with a little more confidence, I think a forum topic inviting anyone interested to come along is perfectly suited. We plan to have a electronics based meet up, but some of the attendees are planning to bring along other projects, so you would be more than welcome to bring along something you are currently working on, or a few projects you would like to show off! The planned date for the meet up is Saturday the 30th October.  We will start off nice and early at 10am, and keep making through the afternoon, and into the evening, aiming to finish up around about 7pm. If you are turning up late, or leaving early, that's fine, we want to keep things fairly loose. We are holding the event in my local town of Alfreton, Derbyshire. Attached are a few maps showing alfreton, and also the Hall where we are hosting the meet up. The name of the place we are using is New Life Church, street view of the church is attached also. (if you want further travel directions, or help with accommodation just comment or PM) Anyone who is planning to come along, if you could comment below, or PM me. I need to get a good idea of numbers in order to plan accordingly! We plan to arrange to provide lunch, and will make decisions about dinner depending on turn out (we may just order in some fish and chips). To help cover costs we are asking for £5 for the day, this will include the cost of lunch, drinks and other general costs.  Thanks to Lizzy, and Steve, we should have a few kits to play with also. Listing those here so people can think what they might do. If you want to put your name down for a specific kit, just leave a comment below. Name  AMPLIFIER PROJECT KIT (PACK OF 5)  - £13.98 (2.70ish each) VELLEMAN FLASHING LED SWEETHEART KIT -  £5.58 VELLEMAN ROULETTE KIT - £11.10 MOBILE PHONE OPERATED SWITCH - £8.17 VELLEMAN SHAKING DICE KIT - £8.99 Reserved for Lemonie - VOICE CHANGER KIT RC - £10.52 POV WAND PROJECT KIT - £6.29 I am still hoping to source some drawdio kits, but thats harder than it sounds in the UK! I look forward to hearing from you! Jake - gmjhowe

What are you going to be for Halloween?

So what are you going to be for Halloween (as in what costume are you wearing.) Also what are you going to do for Halloween, are you going to stay at you house and give out candy, scare little kids, or go trick or treat with your friends?I am going to go trick or treating with my friendsI have also come up with a costume design which is a transformer costume that actually transforms! Unlike the costly imitation costumes at the store. Here are some pictures of it but it is not quite done yet. Also i was wondering if anyone would like to see an instructable on how to make this kind of costume? Its kind of like this but not as good: Please comment!!!

Week 1: September 19-25 Ideas, Inspiration, and Planning What is your costume going to be?  What are you going to build/make?  What materials do you need to make it happen?  Post your preliminary sketches! Week 2: September 26 - October 2 Measure Twice, Cut Once Assemble materials and begin your creation.  What steps are you taking as the foundation of your project? Week 3: October 3 - 9 Take notes! Start your instructable and write what you do as you go along.  It will make it much easier to remember what you did later on when trying to finish writing up your Instructable!  Remember to post about your progress on this forum thread! Week 4: October 10 - 16 Get by with a little help from our friends In a jam?  Ask for help!  If your project is going smoothly, see if you can help out someone else.  Words of encouragement definitely count as help! Week 5: October 17 - October 23 Home stretch   Hopefully, we are almost done!  How’s your progress?  Are you on track? Week 6: October 24 - October 31 Finishing frenzy and Final Touches Hopefully you’re almost done with your project!  Or...you waited until the last minute to start.  It’s all good, we will get through this together!

Contest deadlines in official rules

Hi, As I recently have started participating and judging in contests, there's a little thing I noticed and would like to point out. More often than not, the deadline section of contests states something like this: ...no later than 11:59 p.m. PT on October 20, 2014 /7:59am GMT on October 20, 2014 What I'd like to point out, is that 11:59 PT is the next, not the same day in UTC, therefore it should be: ...no later than 11:59 p.m. PT on October 20, 2014 /7:59am GMT on October 21, 2014 Wouldn't even bother you with this, but it is recurring, so why not get it in tact? Also, fix the deadline dates in leatherworking contest rules, they're a bit mixed up. One more thing is the timer contests have. It obviously runs using local time of the person looking at it, it's ok for a person in PT, but for me it writes that the contest is closed 10 hours before it actually is. Not a big deal, since it's still possible to enter it during that period, just something to think about.

Date of my Ible got changed

I uploaded an instructable today (12 October), and for the first bit (at most an hour) it showed on page 1 of recent. Then a few hours later when I looked, it was at page 4 and the date suddenly was 9 October. It isn't a big instructable, so I won't lose anything from it, but I am wondering how such a thing could happen. One day I can understand, with timezones and everything, but 3 days seems a bit odd. It doesn't seem like this is supposed to happen. The instructable in question is: https://www.instructables.com/id/Capacitive-Fluid-Level-Sensor/
