Offensive Ads

Found this ad whilst browsing. I believe it is inappropriate for a family-oriented site (I know it's not you guys fault so don't think I'm angry at you) Ad: http://img183.imageshack.us/my.php?image=65571160vj4.jpg (didn't post it here because I didn't want it popping up below this post)

Instructables not family safe any more

I was disappointed to see the repeating ad for the AXE Undie Run. I was browsing through Instructables with my 10 year old son and the ad kept appearing at the top of the page. I actually DO care what goes into my child's mind. This is not the kind of content I want my son being exposed to yet. Come on? Women taking their clothes off? Headlines that say "Sexy"? What does this have to do with instructables? This just does not fit in with the otherwise wholesome, educational nature of the site. This means I cannot trust the content on this website to be safe for my kids any longer. If you cannot maintain higher standards than that, then I am forced to boycott this website for my family's viewing.

Offensive Images on Search Engines

This is a Topic I've been wanting to discuss for a while, Offensive Images on Search EnginesYou've probably searched on google for a perfectly innocent image for something, only to get some what most will consider some very offensive images, mainly the male member (please stay classy on this, no comments I beg of you)This has really become an issue as these people insert popular keywords into these image sites so they will appear if one searches for something completely unrelated. This is truly a problem for moral people trying to go on with their regular lives. These cases have also moved out of search engines, as many of you will unfortunately remember hello.png ( I extremely warn you, DO NOT GOOGLE THIS! EXTREMELY OFFENSIVE> YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED NOW INSTRUCTABLES NOR I TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR ANY RESULTS OF NOT FOLLOWING IT. )I would like to see your points of view in this topic

BackTrack 3

I just downloaded the new BackTrack distro from Offensive-Security (BackTrack 3 Beta). It's interesting. It has a lot more graphics than 2, and it looks like the computers that all of the "hackers" use in the movies. I don't know if that's cool, or a bad thing. Has anyone else tried BackTrack, and if so what do you guys think about it?

Offensive Ads

How do I stop the Ads that this site randomly sets for me?!? In my joining data I specified I was in NH, now I am targeted by political propaganda ALL OVER THE SCREEN. I in no way think that the staff of the SITE are responsible, mind you, they just sold space to an advertiser, I get that. But I also assume that their intent is not to have advertisers drive away members...

The "N-Word". The bad one!

Ok, I hear lots of name calling out there. Sometimes I even hear the N-Word. Not just one N-Word but multiple N-Words. So clue me in. Which is worse, a "noob", a "nerd", a "ninny" or a "numpty"? I just need to know how serious the name calling is. So give me the offensiveness levels of the previously mentioned N-Words on a scale from one to ten (with ten as the most offensive).

What are "private and friends only settings"?

In the Instructables Terms Of Service (which I recently quoted at a particularly offensive user), there's an interesting parenthetical comment: "Should any Content be reported to Instructables as being offensive or inappropriate, Instructables might call upon the poster to retract, modify, or protect (by means of private and friends only settings) the Content in question ..." Could Rachel, Eric, or someone give us some guidance on these "private and friends only settings"? I haven't seen such a thing in my profile. If this text refers to an earlier version of the I'ble user interface which no longer exists, I think the TOS should be adjusted accordingly. Cheers, Michael Kelsey

Unexpected Finalists

I noticed that only four of the finalists are winning by views or ratings. Why is that? A lot of out of the blue (no offense) Instructables have been promoted to finalists, what is the reason to this? Is this to do with judging or are there other more sinister reasons...

A new appreciation for the Instructables site

I have posted a couple of questions at another site where people can help each other with technical information. I got a response from a user with quite a large number of posts there. The response did not deal with the substance of my question, but was a hostile and sarcastic personal attack. I gave him three opportunities to respond to the substance of my inquiry, but each time there was another personal attack. So, before the third response I decided I would block his posts if the third response was another personal attack. It so happens he is a moderator and the site does not allow blocking him. So, I found a button that would allow me to report his post to the editorial board for the site. I had already checked the offensive person's profile and learned his personal first name. After reporting the offensive posts to the editorial board, which I assumed involved several people other than this moderator, I got a personal e-mail from someone with the same personal first name as the offensive poster. He said he had examined the posts of concern and found the moderator to be 100 percent free of fault. On the other hand, he found me to be offensive and argumentative. The tone of the message was exactly that in the personal attacks. I responded to the e-mail and said I noticed the personal name of both parties was exactly the same. I asked if he was exonerating himself. I just got a response in which he shamed me for trying to get him in trouble and threatened to ban me from the site. His comment about trying to get him in trouble does not even make sense unless he is the same person as the offensive moderator. After this experience, I really appreciate the "be nice" policy at Instructables. I also appreciate that Instructables is not a "one-man shop" where the person who resolves a complaint might be the same person as the one involved in the complaint. Thank you, thank you, thank you!

How to flag an inappropriate user?

I know how to flag a comment as 'not nice' or 'inappropriate' and an Instructable as 'inappropriate' or 'spam' ... but how does one flag a user?I've seen a few around that are rude, offensive, racist, sexist, and some times violent. Is there any way to flag a user, and not just his/her individual comments or Instructables?

Offensive (at least to me) Titles or Content of Instructables

Thank you to the "powers that be" for removing the "Instructable" on how to snare cats that I flagged a few weeks ago. Though my comments were perhaps a bit coarse (considering your Be Nice Policy) watching a video of a snared feline swinging back and forth by the back leg, desperately trying to escape, should shock and anger anyone; cat owner, cat lover or dog owner or anyone else that possesses the tiniest smidgen of humanity. To address the title of this post, I have counted over 60 Instructables that either have "Ghetto" or "Hobo" in their titles or text. I'm not only quite offended by this practice, but find no excuse for allowing it continue; and please note I'm a middle-aged white guy, raised in rural North Dakota and a small city in Minnesota! The first clause of your Be Nice Policy is - "We expect you to respect the rights and dignity of others." Any Instructable that utilizes low-cost, recycled or repurposed materials; or low-tech design and/or assembly methods should proclaim and celebrate those qualities, rather than denigrating or making insinuations about the less fortunate of our society, falls short of meeting the expectations of that clause. I'm fairly positive that you wouldn't publish an Instructable on how to "Jew someone down" (bargain or haggle) to get a lower price, just as I heard expressed by others countless times while I was growing up. It was offensive to my sensibilities then, and even more so now. Thank you for providing the opportunity to address this matter in your forum.

Hacker to be extradited to America

A Briton accused of hacking into top secret military computers has lost a Law Lords appeal against being extradited to stand trial in the US.Glasgow-born Gary McKinnon could face life in jail if convicted of accessing 97 US military and Nasa computers. He has admitted breaking into the computers from his London home but said he was seeking information on UFOs. Link to BBC website.According to McKinnon (in the video included in the article), he used a simple password hack ("blank password scanning") to look for UFO-related technology. In response, the US are using (abusing?) anti-terrorism laws to extradite McKinnon for trial. If found guilty, McKinnon could face life in jail. American officials involved in this case have stated that they want to see him "fry".Controversy abounds in this case:Britain has no choice regarding the extradition, because they have signed a treaty with America regarding the extradition of terrorist suspects. America, however, has yet to sign the treaty they are exploiting in this case.If an American citizen committed the same offenses against UK military computers, the US would prevent the extradition of their citizen anyway, because they are protected by the constitution. The case is being prosecuted retrospectively - when McKinnin hacked the military computers, there was no treaty, and his actions were not considered an offense. The US is (allegedly) using the same anti-terrorism treaty (the one they haven't signed) to force the extradition of around 200 UK citizens, mostly for non-terrorist offenses (such as financial crimes).

Way to filter Knex articles?

I like to browse for ideas, but every 5th article seems to be about Knex. Since I don't have a Knex set they are just spam to me. Is there a way for me to filter them out or can Instructables remove them from the general pool and just make them only viewable from the Knex category? Thanks and no offense to Knex builders.

Choosing IC

I recently came up with the brilliant idea (read: scheme) of constructing gloves with built in  RGB LEDs that fade through colors randomly. I plan to sell these to ravers as they are usually spoiled rich kids (no offense) and I can fund my new found interest in electronics. My question is if anyone knows of any ICs that can control this without having to program it, like the LM3914 can work as a VU meter. If no such thing exists, then the cheapest alternative.

The forum topic to post stuck forum topics

Lately there have been a ton of topics that just get stuck for no reason at all. Here's where to post them when you make a perfectly legitimate, and not possibly controversial or offensive topic but it just won't show up after a period of several hours. If you spam or post controversial things, I'll delete and repost the topic. This is only for stuff that gets stuck for no apparent reason, as poor Kiteman keeps having happen to him.

How to deal with spam on instructables?

Guys, if you see spam, anywhere on the site, please do not reply to it, even if you are just saying "spam". Adding comments actually slows down the removal of the spam, so just flag it and move on. If it is really offensive spam, or it needs quickly removing for some other reason, then email service@instructables.com, or send a PM to any members of the staff or the Community Team who seem to be online at the time. If you're running on UK/Europe times, that will likely be me.

Please consider changing the user "badge" for paid accounts

I (and others) have made this comment several times, but now I'm posting it as a formal feature-change request. Please consider replacing the "PRO" badge with something more abstract. A little picture of Robot came to mind as one possibility, if gold stars aren't adequate. The "PRO" word itself seems to be pretty divisive, with many of the users who can't or won't pay taking offense. They seem to think that the paid users themselves are to blame for "lording it over" everyone else. This is obviously detrimental to the whole community here.

How can I get faster for football?

I am a soon to be 7th Grade Center. In my past four years of being center, I have had ZERO fumbled snaps, I have out performed centers four years older then me, and I am the best blocker in my school.  I just need some more speed becasue the middle school is different, they pick the twelve fastest players to play offense and defense, out of like fifty people. I do not want to pay for some speed program.

Okay, I didn't know what it was, until I saw someone use a dead mouse as a computer mouse. I have always liked instructables, but now I feel sick. Is this something you guys seriously promote? God gave us all the animals on earth. But he didn't do it for this reason. Please remove this section, because it is extremely offensive. I have a question, how come every time it says a contests ends, for example "wear it contest, judging ends Oct 28, 2014"   You guys never actually show the winners until much later? Its Oct 30 and still no sign. I really want to see if the instructable I voted for won! Is my computer just late to get the results or does it take a long time to show the winners? No offense but you guys really should follow your deadlines better. (Please don't think im rude, Im really just wondering why its delayed so much) Anyway, Thanks for listening to my feedback.

Reasons why we should do away with internet filters.

Internet filters suck.  Here's why we should throw this sh*t away: - Most filters restrict LEGIT sites, like wikipedia, Youtube, Facebook, etc. - It slows your internet speed down somewhat. - The workarounds make your surfing experience way too slow. - Censorship in general sucks. - It takes away freedom, which is already gradually ebbing away.. - So people don't try and steal my iPhone to look up porn because the PC's are blocked. People should have common sense to just hit the X button if they stumble on content they find offensive.

How much profanity is appropriate for instructables.

I have a quick question. I made a film for my next instructable, with instructions spoken in it ,better than I could explained. The people in it used a little profanity. (I counted about 11 wordy dirts for 4 min video). Would this be okay for instructables or should i try to go through and beep out any profanity? Also i already posted the video on Youtube and it took like week before i got it all squared away, so i really don't want to upload a new video. And i dont want to post something offensive and risk having that robot beat me up. The topic is about first aid. I had to take a first aid class for work and I filmed some of the hands on stuff with my camera.

How to Behave as an American Soldier in Iraq -- in 1943

Here's an interesting pamphlet authored by the US Government for soldiers going to Iraq during the Second World War. You have been ordered to Iraq (i- RAHK) as part of the world-wide offensive to beat Hitler. You will enter Iraq both as a soldier and as an individual. That is our strength--if we are smart enough to use it. It can be our weakness if we aren't. As a soldier your duties are laid out for you. As an individual, it is what you do on your own that counts--and it may count for a lot more than you think.American success or failure in Iraq may well depend on whether the Iraqis (as the people are called) like American soldiers or not. It may not be quite that simple. But then again it could.Anyone have a copy of the current pamphlet? It would be fascinating to compare them. Thanks Dr_David for the original link here.

If you see tinned meat...

You may have noticed another rash of spam over the weekend. It seems "they" found a way around the filters, which the development team have not yet solved.  Generally, if you see spam, either in the forums or as actual instructables, the best thing to do is to hit the flag button and move on. If you leave a comment, the systems that quarantine spam get slowed down, and the spam remains visible for longer than we would like. If the spammers go beyond annoying, and actually become offensive, you should still not comment, even on their Orange Board. Instead, contact HQ via email at service@instructables.com, or PM a member of the Community Team, who can speed things up. Instructables is a special place, and it's you folk, reading this, that help keep it that way.
