One-handed keyboard mod

I saw this on the MAKE Magazine blog.  A programmer (who actually knows how to bend metal :-) ) did a homebrew keyboard modification to allow himself to touchtype single-handedly after some left arm surgery.  Using his left thumb, he can hot-swap all of the keys on the left side over to the right and touch type with only his right hand. Read the whole story, including some guidance on construction, on Daughtrey.

With many projects happening at once, how do I create multiple drafts. I seem to be able to only make one, finish, then start another. There is a counter but not the ability to multi task.

Linkit One not working

I have a Linkit One that keeps disappearing from my ports when I try to upload a sketch. I was doing some testing of a sketch I had made and I keep getting the message that there was not board on the port I had selected. I have successfully uploaded sketches with this setup before. This was on a Macbook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5. After several attempts to fix the problem I moved my setup to my Windows 7 machine. The issue is similar. I cannot get the board to remain visible on the port for any amount of time. I plug it in and it shows up for a few second before disappearing again. I fear my board's usb port has gone bad. I can upload to my arduino uno with no problems.   If it is a bad usb port is there anything I can do? Can I upload sketches another way? I would hate to lose the use of this board. Thanks for your time.

Interface RS232 to 12 Volt One Wire

I am interested in a circuit to interface an RS232 to a special 12 volt ONE-WIRE circuit.  It is special because it is an controller used in industry.  So I have a MAX3232 to convert my Arduino to RS232 levels, but that will get me to 2 wires.  I need to be able to make that into a ONE-Wire at 12 volt levels (not 3-5 etc) .  I see the MAXIM circuit (attached) for converting to one-wire at lower levels, but can't find anything to utilize a 12 volt one-wire level.  Hope I am being clear and thanks for your assistance.

Linkit One abuse

I subscribed to the micro-controllers feed and I was pretty happy with the instructables being shown, however a few weeks ago something happened and now about 99% of the instructables that I get only use Linkit One as microcontroller, no more arduino, raspberry, etc. Later I learned that Linkit One is a "featured" product. I'm ok with sponsors and such kind of strategies to generate revenue, but do it in a way that allows you to have some balance.  If they keep doing this I'll be moving to another place.

Instructables needs an "I Made One" button

Everything that instructables seems to be about is sharing your instructions for how to make something or do something so that others can make it or do it too. But it seems like right now the second half is missing. When you make something that someone posted a project of, you have no way of telling the author and the 'ibles community that you made one other than posting a picture in the comments. Those of you familiar with Thingiverse know that one of the most popular features is the "I Made One" button. On a "thing" you just press that button and you can post a picture of the one you made. Everyone's derivatives of this "thing" shows up on that thing's page as well as on a running stream of derivatives. I think that if this feature were to be implemented in Instructables then it would increase community participation by a lot. Authors could see who was making their stuff, who was succeeding, and who was failing. And also everyone would be able to see all the different ways of making it that are creative and different. This would also give yet another reason to become a member because then people who are just making things and not posting things would have something to do with an account. This could even be folded into the Pro membership by giving Pro members higher billing on the list of people who have made it. All in all I think this would be a really great thing for Instructables to have. The stream of made things on Thingiverse is located here: . And here is an example thing that a lot of people have made: (its under Other People's Copies)

Chumby One

Zachninme first turned me on to the Chumby, and if you haven't heard, they're coming out with a new version called the Chumby One. It's going to cost $120 (as opposed to the classic's $200), but if you pre-order it, you can get it for $100. The new one is plastic instead of bean baggy and has a retro feel. There are a few other new features, such as a rechargeable battery compartment, as well. I ordered mine a few days ago, who else is getting one? And to any developers out there, I'd like to suggest an instructables widget! Ideally, you'd be able to view a particular instructable. Imagine being able to carry it around instead of printing out a copy/carrying a laptop. I don't know much about the limits of widgets, but if you can't search for one via the chumby, maybe you could send it to the chumby from the computer with a log on? If anybody's interested in developing that, I'll help test it once I get mine ;) Update: Apparently Ewilhelm is ahead of the game. He's already made a widget that shows recent instructables. It would still be awesome to be able to choose the instructable, however. If you don't know what a chumby is, it's an "internet appliance." A Chumby is a small box with a 3.5 inch touch screen, speakers, an accelerometer, a usb port and of course, wifi. It's mostly useless if it can't connect to the internet (either with wifi or a USB Ethernet converter) because everything you do streams from You set up channels of widgets (user written applications that include everything from games and internet radio to RSS feeds and sports scores). You pick a channel and it will rotate through the widgets that are on it. You can also set it to switch to certain channels at certain times (alarm clock, etc) This will be my first one, but I'm super pumped to get it. I think the reduced price lasts through the end of the month, but don't hold me to it.

One Piece should come back!

Recently I've been wanting to watch One Piece, since I heard that FUNimation had begun dubbing it. Apparently this had happened about a year ago, but since I had stopped watching it on Cartoon Network, I didn't know till I saw an episode with different voices. It was great! A lot of stuff was cut out in the 4kids dub, and the voices were downright awful. Especially sanji's retarded voiceAnyway, the FUNimation dub is really more loyal to the original, and featured a lot of things 4kids left out, like blood, dialogue, or even entire arcs! They cut out one part about a whale and a lighthouse, which at the time didn't seem like much more than filler, but as it turns out, was the background story for a new friggin crew member! So basically, 4kids had completely ruined continuity. The FUNimation dubs on CN was the best thing that ever happened! Yup! All 15 episodes it ran. CN canceled it for no friggin reason, even though the FUNimation dub was quickly gaining much higher ratings than the 4kids one.The main reason I am angry, is that I can't watch the GOOD version o One Piece on tv, because CN is stupid. And I can't watch it on the internet, because FUNimation is too copyright...y... And the DVDs are quite expensive. I can't watch 4kids version now, knowing all the stuff that's missing. All the wounds that should be there. All the facts that have been ignored. All the 9 year old voices on 20 year old men. All the serious themes dumbed down for stupid 8 year with their fingers up their noses! (okay, so my finger is in my nose now, but that's not the point!Basically, this is a rant. Anyway, if anyone likes One Piece, please discuss how idiotic and retarted 4kids is, and how you hope they get ****ed in the *** with an iron stick hard from multiple angles for making a great series just udder ****!

Use scanner only on a Canon MP140 Printer

Hey everyone, I had a great idea to take a non working all-in-one Canon Pixma MP140 printer, remove the non working printer part and use only the working upper tray with the scanner. How complicated can this be? Not as straight forward as I thought. The scanner worked great before I took the printer apart. I removed all the plastic, metal bars and cartridges and thought that with a bit of tweaking it'll work. Hell, at this point I need devine intervention, or at least a knowledgeable instructables member... Right now when I turn it on (I don't know what to call it anymore a scanner or a printer) the power and the alarm LEDs blink with the 7-segment display showing E...2...6... and I can't scan. The following procedure changes the indication, but the end result is the same: •Turn off the printer •Hold the Resume Button (red circle in the triangle), click “Power” which will turn green. •Hold the Power Button, release the Resume Button. •Not releasing the Power Button, double click “Resume” and release Both Buttons. •Click “Resume” for Four times •Once you click “Power”, to confirm the selected action (reset counter absorber). To disable the printer “Power” button to click again. and I can't scan. I fiddled a bit with a wire innocently thinking it'll do the trick.... somehow... but ended up accidently touching the part that connects the scanner white data cables to the PCB. It sparked and the scanner turned OFF. I'm afraid that might have caused the E26 error that I found indicated: Internal temperature rise error. Any ideas?

What to do with a bricked all-in-one pc?

I have a bricked Dell Studio 19 All-In-One PC, and wanted to know if I could use it for something. It was bricked by a failed BIOS update. There was a program from dell which came installed and updated any other of their software and drivers on the computer. Only after the failed update I found out that updating the BIOS is really unnecessary. The only fix I know for the motherboard is replacing it, and the only place I found out that refurbishes them are from a company in the US, and it's not cheap at all. (I used to live in the US, and moved to Brazil later) Well anyway, I wanted to know if I can use the computer for something else, like use the monitor for a different computer and use its bluetooth mouse and keyboard on a different computer too. I think the only thing really useful in it is the processor which is already old (Intel E7500 and a 320GB HDD). Thanks for the help!

RE: One Person Submersible From Plastic Drum

The following is a quote of the post I've just left on the aforementioned Instructable (;=NEWEST&limit;=40&offset;=40).  I would really appreciate the removal of this instructable. "Hi. I am a certified OSHA and CSAO commercial diver air dive supervisor, level 1, and qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainer with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. This is a very dangerous idea. You might not die, but someone else might/will/and has. Just because there is a disclaimer there, you and Instructables will be subject to litigation. There is a reason that people need a certification to operate this type of life support equipment. "Because of Boyle's law, maximal changes in volume occur in the 4 feet (1.22 m.) closest to the surface and the diver sustains a tear in the pulmonary parenchyma with the escape of air into the pulmonary venous outflow." I can quote other resources, such as the US Navy Dive Manual and the DCIM manual, but it's Boyle's Law, not Boyle's "kinda' might happen. I don't know". "

(SOLVED) Break circuit = Make circuit?

Basically, what I want to do is activate something when there is no current somewhere else. Examples of uses of this would include turning an LED on when there is no light on an LDR and turning it off when there is light, rather than the other way around, along with turning an LED on when a circuit is broken by opening a door. Apologies if I have not been clear enough. Is this possible?  EDIT: Thanks to NachoMahma, I have it set up with a transistor. I will post a schematic if anyone is interested.

Instructables junkie, are you one? Know the signs.

Are you an Instructables junkie? (if you or a friend/loved one apply to 3 or more of these, please indicate it so that we may be enablers to your self destructive/constructive behaviors. Please be honest) If I feel nice, I might make a personalized I'bles member card for those who ask(domindude10). Symptoms include: - Spending more then 5 straight hours on the site - Commenting excessively - PMing excessively - Trying way to hard for any patches you can find, no matter how lame they are - Replying to all your comments, within less than 15 minutes of comment being posted - Posting the most unrelated stuff to the subject at hand - Neglecting things in the real world that are more important then your attention-seeking behavior here, like homework, or your job - Complaining about things that aren't worth anyone's breath or time - Making many I'bles solely for contest entries - Using terms like I'bles, 'able, OB, O-board, (more to be amended) - Making excessive forum topics - Those who post *some* things Knex (like guns. its not all bad, the ramp stuff is cool) - You roam the Instructables chatroom (meaning you are more than just a casual user) sub-note - you also troll the I'bles IRC much more then necessary - You have lots of partial projects lying around the house, but not being able to prioritize them because they are all so equally Instructableizeable(or you lack the funds to finish them(possibly from your lack of attention to the real world)). - Your response to pretty much everything that happens around you is "That would make a good Instructable." - Your first choice of a search engine is Instructables and not Google, even when you're not searching instructions. - You pressure everyone you know to join/submit Instructables/use them. - You brag to no end to everyone about how cool Instructables is and how it is your whole online life (possibly real life too) - Asking yourself, "What would Kiteman do?" - Praising the robot or Eric whenever it is totally unnecessary. PS1 LCD Screen into a Raspberry Pi Monitor

So i finally purchased a Model B Raspberry Pi. I'm quite enthralled by the stuff ill be able to do with it, but i figured i would start by making it a case. That idea somehow resulted in using a cigar box i had lying around to turn the whole thing into a laptop-esque build thing. The inside dimensions being 8.5" x 5.4" x 1.5", i looked around and i have a PlayStation 1 with an LCD screen. The console and screen are fine but the hinge is broken. And given the size of the screen, i thought it would be really nifty to disconnect the screen and use it as a monitor. The only problem is im not sure if i could make it HDMI or RCA compatible. Any Tech people think this could be done?

Contest Voting: Minus one point if you say "Vote For Me". Why?

I've seen a couple of the 'Ibles staff say that they will remove one point from the voting if you ask for viewers to vote for you. I understand that this is sort of annoying when people write "Vote for me" in the first step of their instructable, But if you ask nicely in the last step of your instructable:  "I'd also really appreciate it if you vote for me in the contests I've entered :)", (like I did in my "The Ultimate Magnetic Pegboard" project), will judges still remove one point?

New Weekend or one day Instructables. (aimed at instructables staff.)

Consider this, you're a student with very little spare time and you get a day off, what can you do? Search for an instructable all day? NO! If there was a folder of instructables in every genre, full of one or two day projects it would be great for people like me who want to do something productive or helpful in a short amount of time. For example you go into the Technology genre, but you don't have time to make a super complicated ipod dock, so you hit the one day folder and POW! Quick, easy and super fast one day instructables. I'm sure many agree with this idea and the concept behind it is fairly simple and undemanding. Please take into account. All the best. l3owzaaaah.

How does light react to one way glass?

I hope this is the right forum for my question. Earlier today I was watching a show on Netflix (Mythbusters) and they were using some one way glass. I was just wondering how light behaves towards this. For example if I used some one way glass in the side of a computer would I be able to see the light from LED's? The LED's would reflect on the mirrored side, wouldn't they? So would the light be magnified when I look through the clear side? I hope what I was trying to say was understandable.

I'm back! And I've got a challenge for you!

Hello Instructablonians! I'm back (at least for the next few weeks) since it's winter break!  MIT is fantastic, and I've learned so many incredible skills that I think I'll be able to participate in my new challenge. The Challenge:    * Your job is to produce about one (quality) instructable per day for the next 11 days.  Instructables are allowed to be backlogged (ie. do the project in one day, take the pictures, but wait to write the instructable), so long as they are posted by January 17th.  I'll also give you 1 day of lee-way, so you only have to make 10 ibles total to qualify.  Make sure that you tag your instructables with the keyword 'muffinchallenge09'. The Reward:    * Ever want pseudo random components that can fit in an envelope?  If you're in the US, I'll send you a letter with a card and some components you can pick from a list that I'll post when the contest is over.  (Mostly stuff like LEDs, old logic components, maybe some FETs or BJTs, crystals, etc.)    * A Muffin Challenge Digital Patch of Approval!    * The satisfaction of being incredibly productive this season. So get to it!  Happy Snowydays for everyone in the Northern Hemisphere! -muffin p.s. How to catch a bird at the top of a mountain?  :-P

The K'nex Innovations Challenge (KIC) - Round 1 (UPDATES, PLEASE READ)

Seeing as a lot of interest in the challenge has been expressed, the judges and I have decided to host this round now. This round's chosen topic is: Weapons Any weapons are permitted for posting, so long as:  -They are functional - all guns must fire.  -They are your own design - this means that no modifications of other guns will be accepted.  -They are posted between the deadline times. Any posted outside these times will not be accepted. It is also not acceptable to re-post.  -They are posted on the site in the form of an Instructable, Slideshow, or Video. The more detailed your submission is, the more likely we are to understand your submission. Please use correct english and annotate where appropriate - we are judging on many criteria!  -They only use K'nex pieces, rubber bands (or other means of elastic potential energy storage) string and tape. Cut pieces are permitted, but do take into account that more cut pieces won't get you better marks. We are trying to maximise the potential of K'nex, not mutilate our pieces! Please post your entries at any time from: 12:00 Midday GMT September 1st and no later than: 12:00 Midday GMT October 1st.   (Central American Time = 6:00 AM) Entries will not be accepted if they are posted beyond the deadline, no exceptions. To submit your entry, post an Instructable, Slideshow or Video of your weapon, titled "KIC Entry: - " You must post a link to me on this forum topic, or via Private Message. Judging will commence immediately following the final deadline. The top 20 highest-scoring entries will qualify for round 2. Please use this topic for general discussion and submission - no spam please, it makes judging and entry accepting much harder. You have one month. Good luck! List of Entries: Beanieostrich Seleziona Masterdude KnexFreak360 rec0n EDIT: Thanks to a suggestion from TheDunkis and Dj Radio, I am allowing teams to work on a single project in order to share ideas and optimise the weapon.

A do-it-all-in-one-cable For laptops(an idea) Using the ATX 24...

I just recently got an idea, its kind of an ingenious(well i think so) idea.ITs a do-it-all-in-one cable,a cable that connects to your laptops s-video,rca,vga,sound,and even usb through one cable using CAT5 cable for it(If cat5 contains enough cables in it)The cable at both ends will have the ATX 24 pin connector that connects to a project box,but thats another part,we will get to that laterS-Video ---------- 3 Data 1 common groundRCA ---------------- 1 Data 1 common groundVGA ---------------- 5 Data 3 common groundUSB --------------- 2 Data 1 5V 1 common groundSound ------------ 2 Data 1 Common groundGrand total = 15-mixing grounds/ 19 - separate groundsSo according to that,i would need 2 and a half CAT5 Cables(if i use separate grounds),which i am going to squish together into one big cable.Or 2 CAT5 cables (if i mix all of the grounds)Now,i would have all of the cables squished together into some tubing(heat shrink?,no too expensive in such a large amount)with the ATX 24 pin connector at each end. Now,the project box,it will have the opposite connector(the one that the other connector connects to) will go into a box with that connector soldered on a breadboard inside of it(i could get the connector from a computer,or 2(i have 2 fried motherboards so ...))and in the other side of the (plastic)box would be all of the connectors(Sound connector,VGA,Svideo,RCA,usb(maybe for IR receiver or something))that connects to the TV,or monitor. The other end with the same connector would connect to the laptop,it would have VGA,RCA or SVideo,Sound, and USBSo now that i got my point out, what do you think? That the all-in-one cable,or a bunch of tangled cables just to put video and sound to the tv,and that is without USB,whats the fun of not having a usb connector from your laptop 20 feet away from you,you could connect a web cam,to see yourself on the tv,or a ir receiver,to control the pc without a keyboard and mouse,or whatever else you can think of.So...what do you think(poin tout any mistakes i have made by chance)So...comment...or whateveri think this would be pretty nifty,no?

Super BAG!

I am sparsh from India and i am a technology freak i am very new to Arduino. I recently lost my sisters bag (it was her favourite one! ) she still hasn't forgiven me and make up to her , im gonna get her a new one... Not only do i wanna get her a bag, i wanna get her a Super bag! This is a bag i found online.. the one i lost was leather too.. I was hoping all of you would be able to help me plan the bag ... Mission : a bag that has arduino and bluetooth connection and a small screen(to show bag battery and bluetooth connection status), can connect to phone, play music through awesome speaker that is connected to super large capacity battery that can be charged via wall plug or solar panel. Same battery has a standard Indian 3 pin socket to connect laptop on the go.  Maybe some way of bag lost detection on phone when bag not connected via bluetooth. Also maybe some lights connected to the arduino that respond to music playing through the bluetooth ... i also had the idea of using a breathlyzer or some other cool utility that you can think of ... I believe a lot of this will be possible with only an arduino board and a 1sheeld . Or if you have any other ideas in mind I have saved up some money. i would like to pay any of you some if you would like to help me with this project and think that you cannot do it for free ! Otherwise id love to see the community giving in their inputs and extra add ons. Thanks Looking forward to hearing from you ...

New Vacuum Pump Idea

I have a new idea about a new type of positive displacement vacuum pump.  Its of the piston variety, but instead of a one way valve which doesn't work when the pressure gets low enough, another piston is used to act as a valve switching between the vessel to be evacuated (when the main piston is pulling a vaccum) and the atmosphere (when the piston pushes the air evacuated out). This solves the one way valve problem.  Could this pull a much lower vacuum?  I need a fairly strong vacuum, but I don't want to have to build/buy a turbomolecular pump. Also, i have a metal lathe, that's why i'm going with the piston variety.
