I have an idea. It could be a good one, and it could be a useful one. It could even be a money-spinning one, but I want to spread it instead of earn from it.What I'm thinking of was inspried by potato cannons:Imagine a combustion chamber of reasonable size, say a gallon volume. Cylindrical, it is domed at one end t withstand internal pressure, but the other end tapers to a narrow outlet. The idea is that an explosive mixture in the chamber (anything handy, but gasoline/air, ethanol/air and butane/air are the most likely) is ignited by a spark, just like a potato cannon. There is no ammunition, though. The tapered pipe (I hope) concentrates the blast to release a "bullet" of rapidly-moving gases. The whole cannon points down at the ground, the muzzle only a few inches from the ground. The detonation is triggered via a long cable (metres long). The "gas bullet" hits the ground with a large enough force to simulate the step of a human or animal, or the passing of a tyre. This triggers the landmine left months ago under the soil.My idea is, in effect, a low-tech device, capable of being built and repaired by semi-skilled locals, from scavanged materials, in war-torn areas. With a bit of training, a small team could use one to safely pound a mine-field hard enough to trigger the mines and make the area safe to live in. The cannon would be damaged by explosions, but not so badly that it would need repaired after every use, and it could be easily fixed with scrap from the nearest wrecked landrover.Would this work? Or would they need solid ammunition, say lumps of timber or rocks wrapped in rags to make a seal? That would need a staight (not tapered) barrel, but it's the same idea.I don't have the space or equipment to make one myself, and land-mine charities won't tell me how much force is required to trigger a mine, but most of you reading this are in the US, and it seems you have an easier time finding this kind of thing out.Run with the idea, chaps. Build one if you can, and ship it to somebody who needs it, or come up with better plans than my rough idea, and post them to those who need them.

I want to take a regular 3.5" hard drive and make a franken- pod of sorts using an ipod. basically, replace an ipod's hard drive with a terabyte hard drive. its a basic concept i know it can be done here is a link to one that has been done. but im surprised across the whole internet i could only find one or two... http://www.command-tab.com/2005/03/13/ipod-super/ i can get a new Western Digital terabyte hard drive here- this is an ebay link so i dont know if it will work very well... http://cgi.ebay.com/new-Western-Digital-1-terabyte-tb-WD-internal-3-5-hdd-/270666732766?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash;=item3f04fe94de i know this franken-pod will be a bit of a brick, but im fine with that. i plan on using this in my truck to play through the stereo, and having it portable for long trips/ other cars etc... QUESTIONS- -can it be done? -im sure the power from the ipod internal battery will be insufficient... what can i do about this? -when this franken-pod is wired up correctly, will it just be a matter of plugging it into itunes and formatting the drive? or do i need to use windows to format the drive to FAT32 or whatever the ipod drives are then letting itunes format it again and add the firmware? help me out please!

Two Bangladeshi newspapers have apologised after publishing an article taken from a satirical US website which claimed the Moon landings were faked. The Daily Manab Zamin said US astronaut Neil Armstrong had shocked a news conference by saying he now knew it had been an "elaborate hoax".Neither they nor the New Nation, which later picked up the story, realised the Onion was not a genuine news site. Both have now apologised to their readers for not checking the story."We thought it was true so we printed it without checking," associate editor Hasanuzzuman Khan told the AFP news agency."We didn't know the Onion was not a real news site." The Onion article claimed that Armstrong had been convinced by a website written by a part-time librarian;"It only took a few hastily written paragraphs published by this passionate denier of mankind's so-called 'greatest technological achievement' for me to realize I had been living a lie, " said a visibly emotional Armstrong, addressing reporters at his home. "It has become painfully clear to me that on July 20, 1969, the Lunar Module under the control of my crew did not in fact travel 250,000 miles over eight days, touch down on the moon, and perform various experiments, ushering in a new era for humanity. Instead, the entire thing was filmed on a soundstage, most likely in New Mexico."Obviously, this is a major embarrassment for the newspapers involved, and clearly shows how modern "journalism" is really just copy-paste-spin (witness The Daily Mail's recent "pregnant immigrant" slant on UK population data)You've got to wonder, though - how much other net-sourced nonsense has made it to the headlines as "news"?The Onion articleManabzamin newspaperNew Nation (Tagline: "Bangladesh's Independent News Source"!)

I'm usually not one to write but...I don't know I guess I just had an idea for a story that might be good if I continued it. Right now the one below is still being worked on theres some parts that still don't sound right or are missing something. I also really shouldn't say "stories" because truly this is my only one. Anyway, just thought I'd share it. Any ideas for how to take the plot further would be greatly appreciated. Here it goes: My over-active imagination was running away with me again. I've woken up twice in the last hour to something...I can't explain the sound. I just want to sleep until morning and have been doing my best to ignore it, but it just keeps getting louder. Alright, thats it. I shoved off the covers and expertly dodged the piles of clothes that seem to grow bigger over night, to the door. Slowly, I turned the knob. It creaked. I breathed sharply through my teeth hoping nobody heard. Then again, who couldn't hear whatever that racket is? I nudged open the door and slipped into the hallway. It was dark but I wouldn't dare risk turning on the light. Luckily, the big bay window downstairs cast a light over the steps. Jeez, I never knew a house could have so many things that creaked. So I took the stairs two at a time to just cut down on noise. From where I stood, at the base of the stairs, It sounded like the noise was coming from the kitchen, though it was muffled. As I walked into the kitchen, I looked around. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Plates are still stacked up in the sink, waiting to be cleaned. The trash still needs taken out, but what's that sound? Wait, the trash...oops. I don't want that to still be here when Dad wakes up. I was supposed to take it out after dinner, well guess I'll take it out now... I bent down and jerked up the bag. It seemed heavier than normal but I didn't take that into mind. We did have a big dinner that night. I opened the back door to the night. The air was crisp and cool. It was the middle of fall and already it gets to be almost freezing at night. I shivered then walked quickly down the steps and down the sidewalk, careful to not let the bag scrape the ground. Heaving the heavy bag in the trash can, I looked around. It's been awhile since I've been up this late. I'm glad I'm usually not, it's eerie out here. Everything is quiet, there's not a person in sight, the road seems to just go on into the darkness. What makes it especially creepy though is that now that same sound is coming from the trash can in front of me. I just stood and stared. I have to see what it is. What if it is something alive and it needs help? Shakily I reached out and pulled off the lid. It fell to the ground with a loud clang, but I don't care. Now my curiosity was over coming the fear. Slowly, I reached up, untied the bag and looked inside. Then woke up. I reached down and unplugged my blaring alarm clock, not trying to even look for the button that would shut it up. Groggily, sitting up, I remembered the dream. I've been having weird dreams like that. Ever since we moved into our new...well new to us, but still old house. So I tried not to give it much thought. As I lumbered out of bed I could smell the aroma of breakfast come from the kitchen. I was hungry and the smell didn't help me whatsoever. I quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and the shirt I wore yesterday, then rushed out of my room, glancing at the mirror in the hall. Staring back at me was a kid who looked like he hadn't slept in years. My black hair was out in every direction and I had a looked like I was about to fall asleep right then and there. Well, good thing it's a Saturday! I was just starting to turn around to head downstairs when I saw my dad at the bottom of the steps holding a trash bag. "Crud", I said under my breath. I guess my dream was right... Silently I walked down the stairs. He didn't have to say a word. I took the bag out of his hands and headed out back. Lifting up the lid to the trash can I remembered my dream. What was in that bag? I looked around quickly. No one in sight. I undid the strings and looked inside the dark bag. Nothing but trash. Sigh. I almost wished there was something in there. Just to add some excitement to my week. With a dad being an ex-NAVY Sgt. He liked to keep everything on schedule and organized. for him everyday was nearly the same. Me? I'm anything but organized. Him being like that bugged me. I like change once in a while. Not just the same humdrum stuff everyday. But I'm used to it. "Matt?"-I nearly knocked over the trash can. "Are you OK?" My sister was standing beside me with a curious look on her face. I hadn't realized I had my head still in the trash bag for nearly five minutes. "Yeah, I'm fine." She still had that weird look, " Why did you have your head in the trash?" "I...uh...how 'bout you go inside and get some breakfast?" She didn't say anything. She just slowly turned around, still confused. For once she didn't keep asking me. Normally, If she asked something she wouldn't shut up until she got an answer. I shook my head. Why do I always do that? I get thinking about something and then sort of zone off. It's embarrassing sometimes, like just now. "Matt, get in here!" Bah, I did it again. I ran inside. It looked like I missed breakfast. All the plates were put up besides mine. I sighed, and then threw my plate in the microwave. â Hey, Trash Sniffer!â I turned around , my younger brother Aaron was looking up at me grinning. â What were you doing in the trash?â â I wasâ¦umâ¦thinking.â âIn the trash?â âYou wonât leave until you get an answer, will you?â He just stood there, still grinning. â Fine, I was daydreaming again about a dream I had.â I glanced at him. He now had a more serious look. â You said you didnât have those dreams anymore.â Then I realized I shouldnât have said that. Remembering how when I first told him about the weird dreams and how they about scared him to death. He would wake up every morning worrying about if I had a bad dream. I ended up lying to him that I didnât have those dreams and that he helped make them go away. Now, I could tell he was already starting to worry. I quickly said, â No, no, not one of those dreams. It was a nice one and I was just trying to remember it. âReally?â He said glancing up at me. I nodded. âOk, I just didnât want you to have bad dreams again.â And with that he turned and walked away. Crazy 6 year olds.

Hello. I'm thinking of building a 4x4 subwoofer box with one inverted subwoofer on top and one regular vertical subwoofer to save space. Is it possible? I'm thinking it will be weird since one subwoofer will pull and one will push, will it work and do i need to change the polarity?

Every day even after i have repaired the folder by deleting the old cache and letting it rebuild by reopening the folders subsequently. it happens even when the system is not in use but the program is open. i am using .net framework 4.0. After I repair it it works until the next morning and then the error message greets me when I turn on the screen.By the way we are sharing our one note files and all parties were getting the error at first. After the fix you suggested, that we all knew about and that we all tried 2 of the 5 five people using one note stopped getting the error, and 2 only get it every other day while I get it every day.

I saw this on the MAKE Magazine blog. A programmer (who actually knows how to bend metal :-) ) did a homebrew keyboard modification to allow himself to touchtype single-handedly after some left arm surgery. Using his left thumb, he can hot-swap all of the keys on the left side over to the right and touch type with only his right hand. Read the whole story, including some guidance on construction, on Daughtrey.

Ok, so I have 2 headphones, both of them can only play through one of the 2 earbuds, but while the ipod earbuds can play through the right headphones, the noise canceling ones can play through the left. I know its a problem with the wires, because i can still squeeze sound out of the dead earbud if I adjust the wire right. How can I fix without buying a new pair?

I have a Linkit One that keeps disappearing from my ports when I try to upload a sketch. I was doing some testing of a sketch I had made and I keep getting the message that there was not board on the port I had selected. I have successfully uploaded sketches with this setup before. This was on a Macbook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.5. After several attempts to fix the problem I moved my setup to my Windows 7 machine. The issue is similar. I cannot get the board to remain visible on the port for any amount of time. I plug it in and it shows up for a few second before disappearing again. I fear my board's usb port has gone bad. I can upload to my arduino uno with no problems. If it is a bad usb port is there anything I can do? Can I upload sketches another way? I would hate to lose the use of this board. Thanks for your time.

I am planning a disco style floor for my basement, modeled after the one shown here: http://www.wehavethenight.com. I had the idea of installing a "twister" mat inside the floor. Unfortunately, my own map ripped a couple of years ago and I need some measurements including: circumference of dot and space in between the dots both horizontal and vertical. I'll be sure to thank whomever posts the measurements in my instructable of the build.

I heard an interview today with author William Least Heat-Moon. In his latest book, he meets a man who has built an outrigger bicycle he calls a "Railcycle", which he uses to ride on disused railroad tracks all over the world. Curious, I did some searching, and found a number of places on the web where people are talking about this, but they all seem outdated. Bentley Railbikes Railbike Tours Homebuilt Railbike Has anyone else heard of this practice? Do you know of anyone currently making and riding such contraptions? Do you have one of your own?

Hello from Arizona! I'm switching my career from Computers to Medical and will be taking an EMT course. One of the things you MUST be able to do is take blood pressure. To do so, however, you need to be able to hear the pulse through a stethoscope. Unfortunately, I have a slight hearing deficit. I've seen the KipKay video and would like something like this, but it needs to fit (sorta) into a regular stethoscope format. I can't have external boxes & wires hanging off of it. Would someone be so kind as to help me lay something out with suggestions on parts, etc.? Commercial versions of this start at $250, so if I can get away w/it for <$50> or so it'd be great! Thanks for any help. Scott, Lake Havasu City, AZ

My husband really really wants a footstool for his potato couching comfort. He has also always joked about wanting a bar fridge in the lounge for keeping his beer in close proximity to the TV. (he's a lovely but lazy lazy man). I am NOT the 'handy' type, but I do know one end of a screwdriver from the other (just). My first thought was just to tip a bar fridge on it's back and cover it with fabric so that iyou would lift the 'top' to get to the fridge part, but the 'what-cha-ma-callit' at the back of the fridge (the coil looking bit) would be on the ground.. now I am a natural blonde but even I know this is not a good idea! If anyone has ANY ideas on how to go about combining the 2 I would be very very grateful, and my husband would have the best christmas present ever! I am especially looking for any ideas using the KISS principal. thanks!

Hi Everyone, I'm Sarah Calvillo, a visual artist and interactive designer based in San Francisco. I created Steampunk Mr. Potato Head on instructables a while back. I recently built the first one-stop shop for makers in the U.S. to find and book affordable studio time. Growing up, I've watched my father build our house from his personal workshop. Living in the city, I've found there is limited space to build my own projects. I wanted to create a platform where you could rent space and resources from your community. Funding this project was a major challenge, so I resorted to bartering design for development services with a friend to build Concourse. It took us a couple months to build and launch the site. My only advice for someone replicating this project like this is not to fear being scrappy or hacky. Build what you can, then iterate on what you've built. As a one-woman operation, I’ve been focusing my efforts on helping the Bay Area to start. However, Concourse is open for anyone anywhere to use. You can either rent out your workshop or rent someone else. Visit us Concourse.co. Hope I can help you continue making a create cool stuff on Instructables. DM me for more information about Concourse. Alright ladies and gents, take good care and thanks for your time. All the best, Sarah

I am interested in a circuit to interface an RS232 to a special 12 volt ONE-WIRE circuit. It is special because it is an controller used in industry. So I have a MAX3232 to convert my Arduino to RS232 levels, but that will get me to 2 wires. I need to be able to make that into a ONE-Wire at 12 volt levels (not 3-5 etc) . I see the MAXIM circuit (attached) for converting to one-wire at lower levels, but can't find anything to utilize a 12 volt one-wire level. Hope I am being clear and thanks for your assistance.

I subscribed to the micro-controllers feed and I was pretty happy with the instructables being shown, however a few weeks ago something happened and now about 99% of the instructables that I get only use Linkit One as microcontroller, no more arduino, raspberry, etc. Later I learned that Linkit One is a "featured" product. I'm ok with sponsors and such kind of strategies to generate revenue, but do it in a way that allows you to have some balance. If they keep doing this I'll be moving to another place.

Everything that instructables seems to be about is sharing your instructions for how to make something or do something so that others can make it or do it too. But it seems like right now the second half is missing. When you make something that someone posted a project of, you have no way of telling the author and the 'ibles community that you made one other than posting a picture in the comments. Those of you familiar with Thingiverse know that one of the most popular features is the "I Made One" button. On a "thing" you just press that button and you can post a picture of the one you made. Everyone's derivatives of this "thing" shows up on that thing's page as well as on a running stream of derivatives. I think that if this feature were to be implemented in Instructables then it would increase community participation by a lot. Authors could see who was making their stuff, who was succeeding, and who was failing. And also everyone would be able to see all the different ways of making it that are creative and different. This would also give yet another reason to become a member because then people who are just making things and not posting things would have something to do with an account. This could even be folded into the Pro membership by giving Pro members higher billing on the list of people who have made it. All in all I think this would be a really great thing for Instructables to have. The stream of made things on Thingiverse is located here: http://www.thingiverse.com/made-things . And here is an example thing that a lot of people have made: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1046 (its under Other People's Copies)

Zachninme first turned me on to the Chumby, and if you haven't heard, they're coming out with a new version called the Chumby One. It's going to cost $120 (as opposed to the classic's $200), but if you pre-order it, you can get it for $100. The new one is plastic instead of bean baggy and has a retro feel. There are a few other new features, such as a rechargeable battery compartment, as well. I ordered mine a few days ago, who else is getting one? And to any developers out there, I'd like to suggest an instructables widget! Ideally, you'd be able to view a particular instructable. Imagine being able to carry it around instead of printing out a copy/carrying a laptop. I don't know much about the limits of widgets, but if you can't search for one via the chumby, maybe you could send it to the chumby from the computer with a log on? If anybody's interested in developing that, I'll help test it once I get mine ;) Update: Apparently Ewilhelm is ahead of the game. He's already made a widget that shows recent instructables. It would still be awesome to be able to choose the instructable, however. If you don't know what a chumby is, it's an "internet appliance." A Chumby is a small box with a 3.5 inch touch screen, speakers, an accelerometer, a usb port and of course, wifi. It's mostly useless if it can't connect to the internet (either with wifi or a USB Ethernet converter) because everything you do streams from chumby.com. You set up channels of widgets (user written applications that include everything from games and internet radio to RSS feeds and sports scores). You pick a channel and it will rotate through the widgets that are on it. You can also set it to switch to certain channels at certain times (alarm clock, etc) This will be my first one, but I'm super pumped to get it. I think the reduced price lasts through the end of the month, but don't hold me to it. chumby.com

Recently I've been wanting to watch One Piece, since I heard that FUNimation had begun dubbing it. Apparently this had happened about a year ago, but since I had stopped watching it on Cartoon Network, I didn't know till I saw an episode with different voices. It was great! A lot of stuff was cut out in the 4kids dub, and the voices were downright awful. Especially sanji's retarded voiceAnyway, the FUNimation dub is really more loyal to the original, and featured a lot of things 4kids left out, like blood, dialogue, or even entire arcs! They cut out one part about a whale and a lighthouse, which at the time didn't seem like much more than filler, but as it turns out, was the background story for a new friggin crew member! So basically, 4kids had completely ruined continuity. The FUNimation dubs on CN was the best thing that ever happened! Yup! All 15 episodes it ran. CN canceled it for no friggin reason, even though the FUNimation dub was quickly gaining much higher ratings than the 4kids one.The main reason I am angry, is that I can't watch the GOOD version o One Piece on tv, because CN is stupid. And I can't watch it on the internet, because FUNimation is too copyright...y... And the DVDs are quite expensive. I can't watch 4kids version now, knowing all the stuff that's missing. All the wounds that should be there. All the facts that have been ignored. All the 9 year old voices on 20 year old men. All the serious themes dumbed down for stupid 8 year with their fingers up their noses! (okay, so my finger is in my nose now, but that's not the point!Basically, this is a rant. Anyway, if anyone likes One Piece, please discuss how idiotic and retarted 4kids is, and how you hope they get ****ed in the *** with an iron stick hard from multiple angles for making a great series just udder ****!
