Fix PCI slots?

About 5 years ago when I built my first computer, I made a few mistakes, perhaps the one that is the most crippling is attempting to fit a D-link WiFi PCI card while the machine was plugged in. Caused the PC to shut down instantly after that characteristic pop. :O This has caused the card to die (I thought), and caused the PCI slots on the motherboard to die. Nothing is recognized on those 2 ports. I would like to know if my PCI-e slots are dead, but I do not have any PCI-e cards to test. :-( I accepted this as fact for the longest time. Out of curiosity, I decided to to investigate this further, and rebuilt a 10 year old computer that I was pretty sure has working PCI slots, so I plugged in a 56K modem and the questionable WiFi card, and ran the lspci command on linux, and saw the 56K modem, but not the D-link card. Great, so I've got dial up lol! Anyway, there was a huge low dropout 3.3V, 5A AIC1084-33PM voltage regulator that was easy to probe with a multimeter on the dead D-link card, and I suppose it takes 5V from the PCI port and regulates it to 3.297V measured. Too bad this isn't what had failed. That would have also been an easy fix if that all that was wrong. Now when I move both cards over to my Z77 rig, I notice that there is NO voltage measured across the output of the D link card and ground, indicating pontenially no power to the ports. My guess is that I killed an hair-thin internal trace on the mobo for the power rail, I think this should be an easy fix, if only I knew exactly which pin is what. I do not know the layout of a big PCI bus, or ATX power supply for that matter, and I certainly do NOT want to fry my new (but now old I guess) motherboard! I do however have a motherboard I can cross-reference for pinout. Anyway if I do figure out that the PCI-e slots do actually work, I would like to get a GPU into this rig for general performance improvements, so what <$100 graphics card is recommended?

Will a wireless pci card still work if 2 antennas are connected to one antenna port?

I have a dell optiplex gx280 that I got for free, and am planning on modding it. Since it uses half height pci card covers, I cannot use my wireless card (which works in it, but the metal cover is full height). I would like to wire the antenna port traces to a spare wireless antenna port I have. I am wondering if there wil be any change in wireless reception if two antennas are wired to one antenna port on a desktop pci wireless card. (if it even works). Thank you in advance for any help you might give.

Upgrading wireless card? Answered

I bought an Atheros wireless-N mini PCI-E card for an HP DV7 series laptop, to replace the Broadcom wireless-G card, however, when installed, I just get a bios error "unsupported network card". I removed it and restarted with the original card and it works fine. I trhen tried installing the card live, and it detected it and installed the software, but then BSOD (my first one for Windows 7 actually), so I swapped back to the original card again. I then installed the card in the secondary bay, live, and it installed the drivers successfully, but when swapped with the original card again (the wires don't reach to the other bay), it failed to boot again. How can I replace the original card?

EVGA 01G-P3-N959-TR GeForce 9500 GT Video Card compared to a XFX Radeon HD 4550? Answered

Question by sci4me 8 years ago  |  last reply 8 years ago

Why is my internet slow?

My question is deeper than what it says in the title. Ok, so to start, I have a gaming computer that I built myself. It has an AMD 8350 (Eight Cores @4Ghz) and a 1GB Radeon 7790. I have been using a cisco wireless usb stick. With that, I usually get around a 19ms ping from Western Mass to Boston. I usually get around a 16Mb/s download speed and 4.5Mb/s upload speed. I am fine with that. So I recently bought a Rosewill Wireless LAN PCI Card from newegg. It's model is RNX-N300X. It's CD came with a RALink software too. When I went to I only got 0.17Mbps download!!! My upload is a bit more with about 5.6Mbps. My ping is better too with about 15 or 16 ms ping. From a bit of slow research (Using this card) I found that one person was complaining with 50-75mbps because he usually gets 100-200. The responses suggested that it was because the card is for N type routers and not G type. The old usb stick I was using is also G type. But other responses claim that that doesn't matter and it simply is just the speed. So N should be faster, correct? My router is a Cisco E1200 which I believe is N type. I don't see the problem. Why is my download speed so terribly slow? Right now I will rely on my USB stick as I did before.

Video card questions Answered

I've recently gotten a free PC (a HP Evo D510) which I intend to do some moderate networked gaming on.  My plan was to buy a cheap AGP or PCI graphics card, but I'm unsure what to go with (ATI/nVidia, AGP/PCI). I've only had experience with PCI-E cards so far. From what I've read, AGP is faster than PCI.  I assume this is correct?  Looking at NewEgg, it would seem that AGP ATI cards are ludicrously better than AGP nVidia cards.  Is this the case?  The computer to be upgraded has 2 Gib of RAM and a 2.4 Ghz P4.  I'm anticipating the porcessor to be a bottleneck, along with slow bus speeds.  I suppose my main question here is what GPU should I roll with?  I'd like to spend less that $75, but that's flexible to a certain extent.  Anyways, thanks in advance.

Bouncing PC! How to secure PCI/PCIe cards and keep cables in place?

I have a desktop PC with a lot of components including a large number of PCI/PCIe cards. The problem I have is that the machine is regularly transported long distances by a variety of means, including rail, road and sea. What happens is that the (often quite generous) jars and jolts of the journey cause cables to fall out and cards to rise out of their slots at the unsecured end. Each time I have to open everything up and reseat everything. If the machine arrives somewhere where I'm not, it can't be used until I arrive. I've gotten around the problem of SATA cables falling out by purchasing cables that clip into place rather than just flap about in the usual fashion. What I don't know how to do is secure ribbon cables, audio cables, cards and the like.  Because of various constraints: - I can't use plastic zip ties (there's nowhere to secure them) - I can't use brackets (the cards are half height) - I can't swap out or modify the chassis The only option appears to be glue. Old fashioned sticky stuff. Thing is, I've read an awful lot of things on the web and while this question gets asked a fair amount there is no consensus. Some people say to use a conducting type (which seems plain idiotic, given that if applied to a PCI interface it'll short out), and others say to use a glue gun (which might introduce problems with regard to the heat and chemicals). The only suggestion that made sense was a silicon sealant from Loctite designed specifically for circuit boards - Tempflex - but there's almost no information about it and the word 'Temp' makes me concerned it's just a makeshift solution (no pun intended). It's also really too expensive to buy a tube and only then discover it won't work. Does anyone have any thoughts?

Ethernet to USB 3.0?

I was looking around this afternoon and found the wonderful 'PCI Express X16 to USB 3.0 adapter' which got me thinking, This could be an awesome way to add a better graphics card to a small computer e.g. a laptop or preferably a Raspberry Pi. Now i know that the Pi doesn't have any USB 3.0 ports but it does have Ethernet (which from past experience is quite a lot faster than USB 2.0) My question to you is this: Is it possible to get a USB 3.0 to Ethernet adapter so that we can have USB 3.0 ports on a Raspberry Pi, and if so would the Pi be fast enough to run an external graphics card connected through a PCI Express to USB 3.0 adapter?

What is the best graphics card available for this computer that won't bottleneck the CPU? Answered

Specifications: 2GB DDR2 (up to 4GB max). Intel Pentium 4 CPU with HyperthreadingT @ 2.8GHz overclocked to 3.4GHz stable. Runs Fedora linux. 1 PCI express x16 slot (shouldn't be a problem, PCI express x16 2.0 is backwards compatible). ASUS P5KPL-CM motherboard. I could install a Pentium D 3.0GHz for $25 and I can always upgrade the PSU to accommodate a more powerful graphics card. I need the most powerful graphics card I can get for the computer that won't bottleneck it. My speakers won't give sound (Realtek HD Audio)?

To start off, I'll tell how it all happened. First, almost 3 months ago I bought a PCI Wireless card from newegg, it came in a week later and it was defective. I returned it for a new one and got it another two weeks later (Very slow shipping). It was working, but when I installed what was on the disk it came with, my HD Audio Manager went wacky and said I was plugging in and out audio devices. I just clicked OK on all of them. So I got good speeds but I realized I hadn't any audio coming from my speakers. The realtek HD audio was set to default playback device and both ports on the audio jack were securely in. It simply wouldn't work. A restart didn't fix it either. So I uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for the PCI Wireless card a couple of times, restarting time after time just going through troubleshooting processes in hope that one would fix it. So during the process, after the first time of uninstalling I found the card defective again only giving 0.8Mb/s download speed just as the first defective card. Over the whole convoluted process I hadn't fixed my speakers, my mouse drivers broke so I had to put it into a different port, and I have another defective PCI wireless card. So my question is, how would I fix my speakers? The speakers are in my monitor and what it's usually named is Realtek HD Audio or something but now it's named High Definition Audio Device. Are there any fixes I can try? Or is more information needed? Thanks!

Ok here is the idea, I have a main tower, plus a dozen or so old ones.  I wsa wondering if it is possible to some how link 2 motherboards so that one acts as a slave for the other.     First thought was that it may be as simple as running a cable from the ide ports.  That may be totally off but that is where I got the idea.    Target goals of theory 1. Additional disk drives- this would allow you to use additional HDD in the other case this was my primary objective. 2. Might the additional processor be able to split the tasks of the computer as a whole? In theory would it then be ran as 2 seperate computers or as one whole with dual processors (does such a thing exist?) 3. extra usb space. 4. additional vga outputs- I have 5 screens right now using the onboard, a dual port pci-e and a pci vid card plus a usb adapter one.  rather clusterry.  I have a additional screen but no card space for it.  I intend to eventually be able to use each independantly or as one large 2x3 screen for watching movies, but that in itself is not as of yet crucial to the theory. So can it be done buy this method or for that matter any method? If so how would I even start? I thank all those much wiser on this that I in advance

Wifi Extender

Hello All, Im puzzled by a simple wifi aerial, i have an old pci wifi card which is slow but works perfectly fine, the only downfall is the range so i un-soldered the original antenna and soldered on some copper wire (approx 2mm thick copper) and on the end of this attached a connector and that attached to a new antenna, but that didnt work,  The signal was weaker, i know one option is to go and buy a new better wifi card but i wanted to dabble with creating a stronger wifi aerial, (in my head this would work but in practical it didn't). Why And what did i do wrong?

ATi (AMD) GPU Problem Answered

I recently recieved an XFX Radeon HD 6850 card after reluctantly switching from nVidia. My previous card was an MSI N8400GS 512MB DDR2, and wasn't up to spec with the latest games. I installed teh card using standard procedures (grounding myself, carefully removing and inserting cards etc. I have determined it isn't a problem with my setup or power supply, as my system specs exceed all of those required by the card. The only one it didn't meet was PCI-E x16 2.1, mine is on;y 2.0, but I'm told it is backwards compatible, and it wasn't listed as a requirement (only pci-e x16). I have installed the drivers from the ATi website, and uninstalled my old ones. The crd does not run hot at any time, so overheating isn't a problem. The problem is I sometimes heat interference on the headphones, even though I'm using a separate sound card. I also get digital interference on the screen (I'm using DVI). When I try to put any kind of stress on the card (run-in tests, benchmarking, or gaming), the display driver stops responding multiple times, the interference increases, and sometimes the system halts and I have to reset. I can't think of any good reason for this problem other than a faulty card, but I bought it brand new @ factory sealed, with no modifications or over clocking. Any idea what the problem might be?
