Pre-peeled versus fresh garlic?

In what dishes can you tell the difference between pre-peeled and fresh garlic. How about Chinese versus Californian pre-peeled garlic? If you can tell the difference, how can you be sure? I love garlic, and use a lot of it. I'll toss a handful of chopped cloves into almost any savory dish that involves a sauteing step. Using so much and being pressed for time, I primarily buy Californian pre-peeled garlic, and chop it right before I use it. I'm curious if you judge pre-peeled garlic to be less flavorful, and if so, can that flavor be returned by an increase in total garlic or if there are fleeting compounds that escape as soon as the garlic is peeled.Another thing I've noticed is that I need to be careful when I make dishes where I food-process the garlic to mince it. I've ruined a curry or two by using food-processed fresh turmeric, fresh peppers, and pre-peeled garlic that smelled fine but had probably spent a week in the fridge. In the finished dish, the garlic contributed a pretty nasty "raw vegetal" taste. Similarly, Christy once food-processed and sauteed some onions and older pre-peeled garlic only to have the whole mixture turn blue and taste horrible. http://whatscookingamerica.net/Q-A/bluegarlic.htmThe discoloration is due to pigments that form between sulfur compounds in garlic and amino acids. When the garlic tissue is disrupted, as happens in processing, an enzyme is liberated and reacts with it to form thiosulfinates compounds that then react with the natural amino acids in the garlic to form blue pigments. The age of garlic determines how much isoalliin there is in the first place, and the nature of the processing determines how much enzyme is liberated. The blue color apparently shouldn't harm the taste, so it would be neat to develop a dish that naturally turned blue using this reaction while still tasting great.

Where to buy citrus peel in bulk?

Remember that orange peel cat litter that was briefly on the market about three years ago? The cats hated the stuff, but oh how it worked in the bunny's litter box. I want to buy orange peel in bulk, since the litter company appears to have gone under. But I don't want the fancy pants potpourri or medicinal or culinary stuff. The bunny won't come in direct contact with the litter, so such properties do not matter. Citrus peel + baking soda = best DIY bunny litter. Any suggestions of websites where I could order such citrus peel would be awesome. Thanks in advance!

Peel an Egg

After watching the "Sprint Cut" on how to peel an egg at http://www.waitless.org/ I was intrigued. I thought this might be useful for Tim and me considering how many hardboiled eggs we eat. So we gave it shot. Results are below (unfortunately, I didn't realize the digital camera doesn't record sound). We're not certain whether it belongs in Handy Tricks or How Not To... Disclosure: Sprint is an advertiser on Instructables, and waitless.org is part of their advertising.

How do I make a faux peeling paint wall for Halloween? Answered

I want to use rigid styrofoam insulation panels to create walls for my haunted house. I want the walls to look like they are old and the paint has peeled. I tried a sample by painting several layers of latex paint and heating with a strong blow dryer and that blistered the paint a little but not enough to peel. Would that process with a heat gun work?

I need recommendation of what clear sealant / glue to use to repair this thing properly but is still durable to rubbing in your pockets... As you can see, the screen has peeled away again.. Help please! Regards, Simon.

What can I use to preserve food (e.g. banana peel) for use as a prop?

I am putting together a display and I need realistic-looking food props (slightly decayed). Ideally I'd like to use real food and coat it in something that will preserve it from further decay - similar to using formaldehyde on human or animal remains. Is this even possible with foods such as a banana peel? If so, what would be best? Thanks

Is there anything I can do with these eggs (that is, a recipe)?I really to see 3 good eggs go to waste. Does anyone know what to do?Thanks,Bran.

Is it alright if I peel off big peices of skin that are just barely attached to my chinese water dragon? Answered

My Chinese Water Dragon is almost always shedding in at least one spot, and I was wondering, is it harmful in any way to pull of a big peice that is mostly shed, but just sitting on him?  I have been keeping reptiles for years, but this is one question I have.  Does it harm his new skin in any way?  I have been doing so, and he seems fine, but is there a problem with that?

How can I remove sun deteriorated plastic decals from a painted bicycle frame without damaging the paint?

Peeling off is not an option, I have tried scraping off with a plastic scraper to no avail. Have also tried Goo Gone (citrus based solvent) and Oops! (a stronger solvent) with a non scratch scrubbing pad. I was able to peel the decals that werent' cracked from the sun but the others are basically baked on from the Arizona heat. Would a heat gun work? How careful do I have to be not to damage the paint? What about something like 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper?

How can I plug holes in DIY sound-isolating ear(muff)phones?

After making small holes in my Howard Leight earmuffs (probably ABS plastic) for the wires, I notice they don't isolate quite as well as before. First I tried mixing cornstarch and clear silicone caulk to make a Sugru substitute both to plug the holes and to attach the connecting wires to the over the head piece. Although the Oogoo initially seemed to adhere, it didn't seem to block the noise out, and after a few days it started peeling away. Then I tried something I had lying around for filling in damaged wood. It isolated sound very well and was very hard, but it too came apart from the plastic. Rubber cement held about twice as good as Oogoo, but also peeled away.  On the headband strap I also tried a combination of electrical tape and double-sidded tape, but it too peeled away from the plastic. Now I'm using plastic ties, which I later read someone else on here used and add an artsy touch, but they're uncomfortable. Anyone have any ideas? I've attached a Sansa Clip+ to the earpiece with Velcro.

cleaning peeling black pipe?

Hi everyone, I finally got myself some black pipe for my project at a place where they would cut it for me. (No more EMT.) I have noticed that little bits of the black paint have come off (eg, at the place where I removed the pricing stickers) and that it is greasy all over (most probably from the pipe cutter I used at the store). I don't especially care about the condition of the paint, but want to be able to handle the pipe on a daily basis without getting greasy hands (or accumulating tiny fragments of paint all around my room and then ending up inhaling or eating them over the long term!). I guess that using water and soap on this will make it rust; how would you clean this? Thanks in advance for any advice! James

X-Ray your finger with stickytape!

Scientists have discovered the cheapest source of potentially-useful X-rays.Peeling sticky tape emits X-rays strong enough to scan a human finger, a remarkable experiment has shown.US researchers used a motorised peeling machine to unwind a roll of Scotch tape at a rate of 3cm per second.By placing their apparatus in a vacuum, they measured X-rays strong enough to X-ray a human digit, according to a report in Nature journal. It is well known that unwinding sticky tape produces sparks of light that can be seen in the dark by the naked eye. This phenomenon, known as "triboluminescence", is produced by the friction generated when two surfaces rub against each other. The study, by Carlos Camara and Juan Escobar, of the University of California, Los Angeles, USA, provides evidence for the phenomenon, which was first observed more than 50 years ago. I want to make a mold of a cement retaining wall block.

I was thinking that vacuum forming would be the best way to go, but not sure about the textured face of the block. I'm also not sure what the best material would be, something flexible enough to peel off the block for re-use, but sturdy enough to not need a form around it. Any ideas would be greatlly appreciated!
