I have converted a Satellite TV dish to a solar concentrator. Now, how do I generate electricity from the concentrated heat? Is there any photovoltaic available for this?

photovoltaic or solar thermal? Answered

I've been designing a high tech, off grid, self sufficient home over the past few months as a hobby. So far it consists of an artificial island floating on recycled plastic bottles and other buoyant devices (see: Spiral island) with an average sized house made of recycled shipping containers and plywood with a greenhouse. I basically want it to be a more high tech version of Spiral Island, but I have two questions. 1.) I'm trying to decide on whether or not I should use a Solar thermal generator or an array of Photovoltaic panels, but which has a better efficiency rate in terms of power and cost? 2.) Does anyone have any suggestions on plumbing? cause so far all I've thought of is a self composting toilet, but it would be really cool to have running water.

Is it possible/safe to plug photovoltaic electricity into wall socket? Answered

I have a photovoltaic panel and I want to connect it to the AC power line of my house. To  connect it to the electrical panel of the house I should use long wires. So I thought: "Is it possible to plug it into the nearest wall socket?" Of course I don't want to put straightway DC from the photovoltaic panel into the AC power line... what I mean is  to plug the output from an inverter into the wall socket. Is the inverter supposed to adjust the phase of its output current to match the mains' phase? Should I look for a particular kind of inverter? Thanks for your answers EDIT: Doing further research I found that a company sells photovoltaic systems that you can plug into the wall socket. So in theory it should be doable, but as rickharris pointed out, it seems that it would cost more than I'm ready to spend. Probably I had better resort to plan B: connecting the solar panel to an inverter, snaking wires through the walls and adding another receptacle to an existing electrical outlet. Small PV Solar Cell Charger Questions

I volunteer as a ski patroller at a ski resort in northern Vermont.  Like many other ski resorts, we monitor Family Radio Service (FRS) Channel 9-11 for skiers who might get lost or hurt within our resort's boundary or sometimes outside the resort boundaries.  Due to the FCC restriction that FRS channels are limited to only a half watt (0.5w) they have very limited range.  So in order to monitor channel 9-11 effectively, we keep FRS radios plugged in all over the mountain in all of our ski patrol huts where there are always patrollers on standby in case of injuries or lost skiers.  One of our huts does not have any electrical power, so we are constantly cycling freshly charged radios to and from that hut, almost every day.  It would be a lot less of a nuisance if we could charge that radio with solar power.   On the wall outlet plug for charging station for the radios we use, the label says the power output from the ac/dc adapter says it outputs 9VAC 200mA.  I assume this means 9 volts alternating current at 200 milliAmps.  Could I simply find a PV solar cell that outputs 9 volts a/c and connect it to the wire that runs into the radio charger?  Most of the PV cells I found online have a watt rating, but I'm not sure if that matters or not.  Where is a good place to find a specific PV cell for this purpose, for reasonable price? If anyone person in the Northeast is able to offer significant help for this, I could probably take care of one free lift ticket for your time and help.  I'm also posting an image of the wall outlet plug label and charging station. Solar - PV versus Solar Oven with Peltier

I was browsing the site as I am often wont to do, and spent quite some time revisiting old 'ibles covering various solar projects, almost all of which are heat related. I understand from general consensus that PV (photo voltaic) solar systems are very inefficient and one of the worst ways to harvest solar energy (when considering the cost of construction and the energy transfer capacity, etc.) Almost everyone who knows what they are doing suggest that the best (and easiest) way to harvest solar energy is to collect the heat - be it to heat air or water, cook food, or other such purposes.Now, I have recently been fascinated by a discovery relatively new to me, peltier units. These devices, for those who don't know, can work in one of three ways. They can harvest and/or produce either heat, cold, or electricity.Basically, if an electric current is run through a unit, it produces heat on one side and an equal amount of 'cold' on the other. Yes I know you can't produce cold - but for the layman, that is what we call it.Or, if one side is heated while the other side is cooled, the unit produces an amount of electricity from the difference in temperatures. One example I have seen and plan to make use of is in vehicles - if you place one or more of these on your exhaust manifold, or any other location where the engine produces waste heat, and airflow can reach it to cool the other side, you generate electricity from the waste heat energy that would otherwise just be . . . well, wasted.But it occurred to me today, if you had a unit attached in the middle of a solar collector, focusing sunlight on one side of the peltier unit, and isolate the other side of the unit in some cooling medium (perhaps even just air with a heat sink of some sort - more likely a cooling liquid though), how effective would this be at harvesting solar energy (heat) into electricity?Actually, I have been using the more common name of peltier, but I believe that for this application a seebeck unit (which is nearly the same, but different) would be required. As I understand it, Peltier units are used more as coolers and are almost always constructed with Bismuth Telluride (Bi2Te3) and used around room temperature and below; while Seebeck units are good for power generators are often constructed of PbTe or, SiGe as well as Bi2Te3 and are used at much higher temperatures.From http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermoelectric_effect :The effect is that a voltage, the thermoelectric EMF, is created in the presence of a temperature difference between two different metals or semiconductors. This causes a continuous current to flow in the conductors if they form a complete loop. The voltage created is of the order of several microvolts per degree difference.((more info can be found at the referenced wiki page on formulae etc.))Just curious on if this would ever be a decent way to harvest solar energy into electricity. I have also thought up using a thermal siphon solar heating system in which the liquid flows past one or more water wheels which power a small (and obviously slow) generator - but at that point I believe it would be so inefficient and limited in use as to just have absolutely no practical application. The peltier unit (used as a seebeck unit) would probably do better, but I am not certain, which is why I post the question.

Plenty on info out there about how a PV cell does its job but so far i've found nothing on which light frequency is responsible for initiating the process.

Laser detector array?

Hi ladies and gentlemen! I am looking to build a proof of concept, then a prototype on a laser detector array. I need a setup that will pick up a laser beam directed at it from up to 200M away. My idea was to use an array of photovoltaic cells hooked up in pattern. When a laser hit one or more of the cells the current would trip a relay that passed the current to a buzzer or alarm. My concern was that sunlight and ambient refection will cause false signals and trip the alarm. I am sure there is a way to set the system up so that the alarm only went off when there was a voltage spike in a single sensor, or put a variable resistor on it so that only light levels above ambient would set it off. The system will be deployed facing down towards the ground so direct sunlight should never hit the array. I would like to start off with a single photovoltaic cell to prove that the system works and then integrate the others to form the array. Thanks for the help!

switch, sensor, or cell. whatever you want to call it. I'm using it as a switch. I'm talking about the kind that's right next to the photovoltaic cell on one of those garden lights. I need about eight of them and radio shack doesn't seem to carry them.

Electrically Conductive Plastic: a general discussion.

I find i have an odd set of interests. Specially with regards to this forum.  I'm interested in electrically conducting plastics. I've been hitting the Wikipedia pretty hard looking for information on the topic.  I've found a couple of interesting articles:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polythiophene http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polyaniline My main reason for pursuing this as of late is because I think electrically conductive plastics offer a way to create high efficiency photovoltaic cells on the cheap (least relative to growing pure Silicon crystal without oxygen contamination).  Azodyes, which are popular doping agents for current thin film photovoltaic cells  can be linked directly to the organic back bones of the polymers, and i think this will make the conversion of photons into electrons more efficient. There's other organic compounds (specifically i'm thinking of metallocenes which can be used to generate positive valences, also known as "holes" within the molecular structure of the plastics) which can be used to dope an organic solar cell, but azodyes are the most obvious. Anyway... gonna hit up google. if any y'all have ideas post em up.

Why is that little solar panel sneaking about...

That little solar panel that popped up behind robot, it was a link before but now it's in a sensible place...  Actually it was a little advertising easter egg earlier but now it's sitting there in its rightful place all smug and whatnot, lording it over me like some kind of photovoltaic fuhrer, thinks he's so good with his ability to turn photons in to voltage differentials, like I can't do that when I try.

DIY Solar Cells through screen printing

I was wondering if anyone has seen the "plans" offered by fuellessamerica.com on producing solar cells cheaply and at home through screen printing. They claim efficiencies of 12-14% can be achieved. I know most solar cells are screen printed, but I know the doping can be difficult. Has anyone seen/done this? I have seen the American patent held by a Japanese company that outlines the process. I didn't have much time to peruse it however. I did notice they were using correct terminology, but it was obviously geared towards commercial enterprise. Any thoughts?

I really like the solar panels on top, and how on the downhill, it charges a capacitor for energy.This HE Human Electric Hybrid Vehicle concept uses the power of your muscles as well electricity stored in the batteries. It allows smooth and constant velocity both uphill (with the help of the electric motor), as well as downhill (when the wheel acts as a generator and charges the batteries). The vehicle can turn 360 degrees maintaining stability all the time. Additional power is acquired from photovoltaic placed on top of the vehicle as well as during de-acceleration from regenerative braking. Elderly and handicapped people that are unable to provide enough kinetic energy can also charge the batteries directly from the grid.

First Solar Powered Speedboat

The Czeers MK1 is a 10-meter vessel covered in photovoltaic cells that is capable of hitting speeds of up to 30 knots (55.5 km/ph to you non-nautical folks out there). While there are certainly faster boats on the water, those tend to use obscene amounts of fuel. The solar-powered Czeers MK1 is naturally going to be a lot quieter than its gas guzzling cousins, which would make it great for sneaking up over fish (though there is limited space to put them if you catch them. I would like to see a similar model with little bit more space for passengers, even if it did mean sacrificing some speed. Speedboats are so limited in what they are able to do, but if this had a little extra space, it could do so much more."

how can i measure how many cicles (ie. 15 second cicles) a given dc motor can run on a battery? votage, current ? =O Answered

I have a rechargeable battery from a eletric screwdriver, and i want to run a dc motor with it. Also, i want the battery to be recharged by a photovoltaic cell. So: + the battery is 12v, 1.3Ah, Li-ion + the dc motor is still unknown, but i think we can use variables in the place of the data + the solar cell gives in 0.3Ah What i plan to do is: the motor will run intermitently, being actioned by a switch. When actioned, it will run for 15 seconds and stop until the switch is pressed again. I need to know how many times the motor cand do this cicle until i have to charge the battery again and; how much time will it take to charge the whole battery with the maximum output (0.3Ah) from the solar cell. help?

Question about solar panel circuit

I'm putting together a solar powered cell phone charger and I need some advice from someone who knows a thing or two about photovoltaics. I've spent the better part of my free time the past three days or so absorbing as much information about electrical charging over USB and solar cell output as possible. I've seen a lot of helpful DIYs, and they would be great if I was following their method exactly. Unfortunately my project has serious space and power constraints. It's not for trickle charging an additional battery, it's for providing direct power to a USB phone. Here are my specifications. I need 5V and preferably ~500mA. Anything over 400mA should work fine. I *think* I've come up with a way to get that within my space requirements but I'm not positive it will work because I'm mixing two different size solar cells in one circuit. I can't seem to find a definitive answer as to whether or not this is OK, and what the results will be. I've attached a diagram of my plan. Two 5.5V/70mA solar cells wired in parallel with seven 1.5V/50mA cells. If I'm assuming correctly, this will give me an output of 5.5V (before the regulator) and 490mA. I don't know how or if the lower voltages of the smaller cells will effect the output. Can I use a combination of high voltage and high amperage cells in one circuit to get the output I need? I've talked with people in the Science and Tech forums and I've gotten a long way on the electrical circuit aspects and USB issues, but I'm hoping someone here will know a thing or two more about solar cells to tell me if my plan is viable as it is or if I will have to modify it. ONLY DIFFERENCE IS INSTEAD OF SUN LIGHT CREATING THE ENERGY IT WILL BE A HIGH POWERED LASER SHINING ON THE PANEL SOLAR CELLS. USE LASER LIGHT WHICH IS MORE DIRECT AND IS MORE FOCUSED OVER A LONG DISTANCE. LESS RADIATION AND LESS WIRE WASTE IS THE FINAL RESULT. HAVE A GOOD CLEAN DAY. Light-activated lamp, cries out "Me too!" when other lights are turned on

Disclaimer: I have little-to-no electrical experience, but want to use this rather involved project as a starting point to hone my abilities and technical know-how. Any non-basic terms I use are based purely on assumed naming schemes. I only have fuzzy notions of what things like photovoltaic cells or flux capacitors are, but I'll write as if I know them perfectly, just in case I'm actually using the terms properly. If this post starts a thread that can answer all aspects of how to get this done, I'll update it as an instructable for others to learn.IntroI'm looking for some guidance. I have a plan to modify one of my lamps to brighten and dim based on the amount of light hitting it: Essentially, if I turn on a larger light, this lamp will turn on as well. As this is still simply an idea in my head, though, I plan to make it rather complicated and feature-rich.FeaturesTwo main settings for the light: Absolute and Relative. When in Absolute mode, the lamp will turn on and off based whether or not the amount of light hitting its photosensor surpasses the necessary threshold energy level (TEL). The TEL will be adjustable by the use of a small dial, so that as the TEL approaches 0, the lamp turns on regardless of any additional light, and as the TEL approaches Infinity (or, at least, the maximum amount of light the photosensor can detect), the lamp turns off. Of course, I'd plan on primarily keeping the TEL at the level at which the lamp only turns on when I've turned on another light in the room, but there are times when I'd want the lamp to be independent of other lighting.When in Relative mode, the light would brighten and dim based on the relative amount of light hitting its photosensor, so that the more lights I have on around it, the brighter it gets. I'd like to be able to use the same dial from Absolute mode to calibrate the relative brightness of the lamp, but that may be overly complicated for the amount of benefit it provides. Additionally, it would be interesting to invert this relationship, so that as less light hits the photosensor, the brighter the lamp gets. A next step could be to layer the exterior of the lamp with solar cells so that it can not only activate based on its environment, but actually power itself (at least partially) based on its environment. This is not as important as any other features.IssuesI plan on developing this post with a diagramed model of how this would work, but first I'd like to iron out a few issues:-How does a photosensor detecting light export information? -Assuming the photosensor exports electricity, what does the sensor need to be hooked up to in order to become meaningful? -How would I set TELs, and how could I set TELs with a controllable dial?-How would I swap between Relative and Absolute modes? How could I add a switch in to do this easily?-How would the lamp's own light effect the photosensor if the photosensor was positioned on an opaque lampshade?-Has anyone else done this, or something similar, so that I could look to those projects as a model?-What else do I need to know?I'm not specifically asking for someone to answer every question for me, but I would greatly appreciate it if I could be pointed in the right direction towards resources that would help me figure out the technical aspects of this project. With the small amount of experience I have, I'd expect to have to do a lot of reading.Thanks for any responses!
