Aero Gloss Air Plane Dope

I wanted to finish my plane today and I opened up my bottle of dope and it was like hard rubber. Is there a way to get it back to a useable state?

Piloted solar plane unveiled

Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard has unveiled a prototype of the solar-powered plane he hopes eventually to fly around the world. The vehicle, spanning 61m but weighing just 1,500kg, will undergo trials to prove it can fly through the night. The width of a jet airliner, but the weight of a family car, it is possibly the lightest plane (weight-for-size) ever to fly. When trials have finished - including a transatlantic flight planned for 2012 - the single-seat plane (designated "HB-SIA") should be able to circumnavigate the globe non-stop. Unfortunately, the pilot won't - at 20-25 knots, the flight should take three weeks, too long for a human to go without sleep. Instead, the flight is planned in five-day "hops", each ending with a change in pilot.Solar Impulse websiteBBC Story with video

Fly Powered Planes

Flies generally buzz about and don't do much besides feed the local spiders, but here's a a couple ways to put them to work by powering tiny airplanes. Check out the models below from the 70s or the video for something more recent to show you that, yes, this crazy idea actually works. Insect Power via Neatorama

The power of C.A.D.

This is what happens when I get my hands on C.A.D!!!! And this is a pic of the RC plane I am in the works of designing. I dont have the ratios to make everything the proper size so I had to estimate. I plan on having it done by the end of my school year in September.

RC ducted fan plane

My Mom recently aquired a new blender for christmas and I was able to salvage the very massive motor from it. it is a 120v 430w motor. I want to be able to make it remote control with an esc and some rc gear I have. I need help either creating one or somewhere to buy one that would work with this motor. I could also use arduino to control it if needed but would need a program. Thanks in advance for all help recieved.

Hello?

Hey, I have no idea what to say, but these numbers do. 1: She's new here and would like to comprehend the awesomeness of this site 2: She always sees little planes made out of soda cans in mexico and local markets. How do you make them? (i couldn't find any when I searched)

Video, please!

There are lots of Instructables about making paper planes.  This is a Good Thing. Like any other group of Instructables, they vary in quality from the appalling to the brilliant, but they almost all share the same Bad Thing. For projects where the behaviour of the finished item is all-important, they do not have a video to demonstrate the different throwing styles required and the expected flight characteristics. Please, paper engineers, can we have video of the flights?

model Bi-Plane, wing span 1.5M,

Hi All, About 5 years ago my wife started to buy me a weekly magazine which had instructions plus parts to assemble a bi-plane (1930's). It cost appox €600 by the time, about a year, until we had collected the complete set !  I never started the project, every issue is as new, ie;  complete set unopened.  The wingspan is appox 1.5M. Ya its a big plane! If you are interested please make me an offer, say €200 ono. lorcanlive

Hydrogen-powered plane carries human crew for first time.

The first manned, hydrogen-powered plane has been successfully tested in the skies above Spain, its makers say.The small, propeller-driven craft, developed by aviation giant Boeing, made three short flights at an airfield south of Madrid, the company said.It was powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce only heat and water as exhaust products. The tests could pave the way for a new generation of greener aircraft, the company said.Boeing's chief technology officer John Tracy said the flights were "a historical technological success" and "full of promises for a greener future".Small futureThree test flights of the two-seater aircraft took place in February and March at an airfield at Ocana, south of Madrid. The plane was modified to include a hybrid battery and fuel cell system used to power an electric motor coupled to a conventional propeller. Hydrogen-powered planes have been flown before, but never with a human pilot onboard.BBC Story

MIT team designs plane that uses 70% less fuel

Planes use a massive amount of fuel to move passengers and cargo around the world. A new design from an MIT team could cut this fuel usage by 70%. This is great news and would make flights cheaper and pump out a lot less carbon. The bad news is that air traffic is expected to double in the next 30 years and the earliest these designs would be in the air is 2035. MIT designed their D-series as a 180 passenger aircraft meant to replace the domestic 737 market. Conventional airplanes utilize a single fuselage design, while the D-series uses two partial tubular shapes placed beside each other — which accounts for the bubble nickname. The plane utilizes a host of technological advances to decrease its fuel consumption. It has thinner longer wings and a smaller tail and engine placement at the rear of the plane instead of on the wings. All of these features account for part of the reduction in fuel usage. Help on R/C plane workings

This is my first time on the site and first time with trying to build a rc anything.  My mind is so scrambled due to constant searching online and I still don't know where to start. First, I thought of building a brushless motor.  Seeing some online looks awesome.  Just some wire, rod and a magnet to a battery.  But I do not know the size of battery nor  how the size of the wire will change my project. Second, it would be fun to have my PS2 controller, control the heli or plane I choose to build. Is this possible. Third, can I use a motor from a cheap heli in a plane and have control over the speed? Lastly for now, is there a way to figure what motor I need if I was going to build a slow flyer vs a outdoor micro flyer?  I have been looking at weight mostly and don't know if I need to be that concerned. Please help if you dare to take me on as a challenge case.

A "Greener, cleaner, quieter, smarter" giant in the sky.

.An Airbus A380 flew this Friday from Filton, near Bristol, UK, experimenting a new synthetic fuel : a GTL (Gas To Liquid) based fuel. This new synthetic fuel, which emits less pollutants, is intended to replace kerosene."Greener, cleaner, quieter, smarter" is the motto we could read on the fuselage of this giant of the sky.Airbus is planning a first flight 100% powered by bio-fuels in 2009.http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5gq6b9_ogzADl78sRB8HeYMUess9wLet's hope Boeing will take it as a challenge, so we will compete to make the "Greenest, cleanest, quietest and smartest" planes ... ! =o)

Paper plane street art mixes 2D with 3D

Really enjoying this street art that looks like paper airplanes that are flying on the side of a building pop off and land in the ground in front. This was done by Said Dorkins in Mexico City. According to the artist: "This intervention is a way to make a satirical reflection on the mechanisms of threat and power in which we are engaged, the political farces and scenarios created at the expense of the suffering and disruption of others. You may be asked for some within spheres of power, to destroy people, buildings, communities, as if it were a game, the movement of a chess piece or throw a dart on a cork." Google Earth Flight Simulator

If you download the most recent version of Google Earth and press Ctrl+Alt+A it will open up a flight simulator. You can select from two different planes and take off from several locations including San Francisco, Switzerland, and the Himalayas. You can also start your flight at a specific location if you go there in Google Earth outside of the flight simulator, and then select the "start at current view" button which is above the airport selection box. The controls can be found by going to help and then clicking on keyboard shortcuts. It's a lot of fun and has pretty good resolution. The pics are of the Himalayas. Record Solar Powered Flight

UK-built solar-powered plane has set an unofficial world endurance record for a flight by an unmanned aircraft. The Zephyr-6, as it is known, stayed aloft for more than three days, running through the night on batteries it had recharged in sunlight. The flight was a demonstration for the US military, which is looking for new types of technology to support its troops on the ground.Craft like Zephyr might make ideal platforms for reconnaissance. They could also be used to relay battlefield communications.Chris Kelleher, from UK defence and research firm QinetiQ, said Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) offer advantages over traditional aircraft and even satellites."The principal advantage is persistence - that you would be there all the time," he told BBC News. "A satellite goes over the same part of the Earth twice a day - and one of those is at night - so it's only really getting a snapshot of activity. Zephyr would be watching all day." The latest flight was conducted at the US Army's Yuma Proving Ground in Arizona. The Zephyr flew non-stop for 82 hours, 37 minutes. That time beats the current official world record for unmanned flight set by the US robot plane Global Hawk - of 30 hours, 24 minutes - and even Zephyr's own previous best of 54 hours achieved last year. However, the Yuma mark remains "unofficial" because QinetiQ did not involve the FAI (Federation Aeronautique Internationale), the world air sports federation, which sanctions all record attempts. The US Department of Defense funded the demonstration flight under its Joint Capability Technology Demonstration (JCTD) programme. The 30kg Zephyr was guided by remote control to an operating altitude in excess of 18km (60,000ft), and then flown on autopilot and via satellite communication. It tested a communications payload weighing approximately 2kg.At first sight, the propeller-driven Zephyr looks to be just another model aircraft, and it is even launched by hand. But this "pilotless" vehicle with its 18-metre wingspan incorporates world-leading technologies. Its structure uses ultra-lightweight carbon-fibre material; and the plane flies on solar power generated by amorphous silicon solar arrays no thicker than sheets of paper. These are glued over the aircraft's wings. To get through the night, the propellers are powered from lithium-sulphur batteries which are topped up during the day."A lot of effort has gone into power storage and light-weighting the systems," explained Mr Kelleher. "Lithium sulphur is more than double the energy density of the best alternative technology which is lithium polymer batteries. The engineers from the Farnborough-based company are now collaborating with the American aerospace giant Boeing on a defence project codenamed Vulture. This would see the biggest plane in history take to the sky, powered by the sun and capable of carrying a 450-kilo (1,000lb) payload.US commanders say the design must be able to maintain its position over a particular spot on the Earth's surface uninterrupted for five years. QinetiQ is the public company that used to be the British Government's military research department, before they privatised it.BBC articleQinetiQ's page on Zephyr

micro camera for Rc planes

If been wanting to film some of my Rc flights iv been thinking of two ways to do this: A.) buy a mini camera (not wireless could cause interference with other planes or mine although it should only affect 2.4GHZ or spreed spectrum channels which are designed to handle this kind of interference but i dont want to cause any accidents) or B.) Buy a cheep digital camera and mount it to plane Things to consider:Any thing will add weight to the plane which will affect balance (to solve this add weight till balance)I want to avoid wireless. How to power; battery's weight a lot and take up lots of spaceDragSize of cameraIf i do use micro camera where will it record too?Dose any one have any suggestions or ideas on the best way to do this on the cheep?Original form (it was origanaly posted in that group but it got separated) *update* i found a Camera called the flip video camera it has every thing iv been looking for its cheep about 150$, has a tripod mount, records 60 min of video, comes with editing software, runs on 2 AA batteries, and has a small (1.5inch) Lcd screen

Gas to electronic power RC plane

I just received a 48 ounce rc plane from my grandfather and I need some help from you all. I need to convert it to electric powered from gas and I dont know what parts I need. (I do know that I need a motor, (I have one picked out) speed control, servos, a receiver, a transmitter, and a battery pack (lipo) I need to know what will work with each other that wont kill my wallet. The motor I picked out is a HXT 35-42A 1450kv Brushless Outrunner (Eq: 2820). So all the help I can get would be appreciated. See the photos for more info.

spy aircraft

Is there a RC plane or aircraft, (like helicopters or hovercrafts) that can carry a camera and drop a payload. This would be great for pranks or dropping weapons for allies in an airsoft war, maybe even shoot airsoft bb's, that would be awesome. If you know how to make at least the first two or know a product that can do that tell me.

Challenge to good model makers

Hey guys, I have a challenge to the good model makers on Instructables.  I need a small replica airplane for a project I'm working on. The smaller the better, the more detailed the better. Feel free to use whatever knex parts you want: minis, bricks, ect...   I could probably build one myself, but I'll give some of you guys the chance to help me out and work with me. Plus I really don't like building models.  If yours is the best I'll private message you what I'm building, or send you a patch, or whatever you want. I really don't care.  I just want to work with some of the new people here.  Anyone is welcome. Just post a picture and I'll pick which one will work best.  Remember smaller the better. Thanks guys, I'm excited to see what we come up with. Killer~SafeCracker

inflatable plane

I would love somebody to build a 2 seater plane that is collapsable using a telescopic carbon fibre frame and wings covered with a balloon type inflatable skin and cockpit using helium as the inflating gas it would in theory be light enoug to be powered by a microlite engine. And after that a helicopter on the same principals.

Model Plane Location dropper

Hi guys I am looking for some help, I am hoping to create a model plane/helicopter which will rotate on an arm (or fly for real). As it rotates (or flies) it will pass a fixed point on the ground and release its cargo onto the ground below. The fixed point must communicate in some way with the plane/helicopter to show that the location can be moved and the planes cargo will drop to the new location. It is a tricky task.  I am also restricted in size - my entire project cannot be larger than 500mm  All helpful ideas would be HUGELY appreciated.

Speed of sound question !!

My friend and I were debating : If somebody sitting in the back of a plane cockpit going faster than the speed of sound ( the whole plane that is, imagine it was the SR71 ) insults the pilot at the front will the pilot hear it and turn around to punch the guy sitting in the back? This one might be more understandable: Can someone sitting in the front of a super sonic plane hear the guy in the back, without the help of microphone and all that crap. My friend thinks it is impossible becose the plane is going faster than the speed of sound and the sound from the guy at the back will not go fast enough for it to catch up. I think that is total nonsense Anybody knows the answer ????

Paper airplane videography

Allow me to share the methods I used to make my video. I hope this will help somebody out there do it even better. First, was the problem of capturing the plane in flight. I had chosen to make a fast model. A bad choice, from the point of filming it fly. If I stand back far enough to catch the entire flight, it becomes just a dot and you cannot tell whether it is a plane or a stone inside a ball of paper. If I stand close enough so that it fills the frame, then it just ... is gone. My solution was to get the best of the flights I could grab, and fill in the rest of the time with the process of construction. You can see in the video the paper apparently folding itself. It isn't. You are seeing it being unfolded, pulled by fine wires, played backwards. I have tried to edit out the wires, but in some frames the results are glaringly obvious. The movie itself was captured by a camera pointed downwards and the plane being launched into its field of view. Seen from the side, the plane is just not discernible as a plane. So I had to get a view from the top or bottom. If the camera is pointed upwards, the bright sky obliterates everything else. I used Fast Movie Processor, VirtualDub and Irfanview as detailed in my instructable on Time Lapse Movies. And the still images were captured by my scanner. Using the scanner is not my idea, I learned it from Don Lancaster at www.tinaja.com Hope this helps, or is of interest to, somebody out there.

Geting started

I would like to help people start building and flying model aircraft! I started flying unpowered gliders with my dad at the age of 5 by the age of 8 I could do figure 8ts with the same model of unpowed glider, then I moved to my own plane a wingo which is a great durable slow park flyer, the kit comes with every thing you need except for a controller, servos and glue. I put a brushless motor and a lipo battery with this setup I could fly strait up until you could barely see the plane (about a mile high). After that I got my first 3d trainer a ucando which is also durable and constructed with hot glue!!! So far I have crashed into a blueberry bush and torn wings to pieces, but I am in the process of gluing back together.I prefer electric models over gas or glow models; their cheaper, quieter, smaller and more durable. Here is a great place to find beginner and advanced electric planes. Their are also different types of kits, ARFs (Almost Ready to Fly) are my favorite type of plane they include most of what you need for the plane inside the box, most only take 2-6 hours to complete and dry. Much easier for beginners to build and not mess up. Normal kits have only parts and dont usually include motors batteries or any thing else, they can take weeks to build but can be much cheaper. And theirs a third RTF (Ready To Fly) more expensive than ARFs but most of the time all you have to do is charge the batteries! You should visit your local hobby store to find out more about the local clubs and flying fields it is illegal to fly some sized planes in naborhoods I am not familiar with all the laws but I only fly at flyingfeilds. A plane like the warp would probly be fine to fly in your back yard or naborhood field. You should know that making model Rc planes can be addictive, expensive, and when you crash and destroy what you have been working on for a month extremely frustrating.Join the AMA and your local flying club, model aviation is a great way to make friends and meet new people, oh and its fun! For all ages!horizon hobby is a group of hobby stores. hobby store locatorIf you have any Q's please ask!Id also like to start a list of good trainers the yard stick is not as durable as the wingo but can be found every werethe wingo a great beginer ucando a 3D trainer (get a wingo first)
