Swiss adventurer Bertrand Piccard has unveiled a prototype of the solar-powered plane he hopes eventually to fly around the world. The vehicle, spanning 61m but weighing just 1,500kg, will undergo trials to prove it can fly through the night. The width of a jet airliner, but the weight of a family car, it is possibly the lightest plane (weight-for-size) ever to fly. When trials have finished - including a transatlantic flight planned for 2012 - the single-seat plane (designated "HB-SIA") should be able to circumnavigate the globe non-stop. Unfortunately, the pilot won't - at 20-25 knots, the flight should take three weeks, too long for a human to go without sleep. Instead, the flight is planned in five-day "hops", each ending with a change in pilot.Solar Impulse websiteBBC Story with video

Flies generally buzz about and don't do much besides feed the local spiders, but here's a a couple ways to put them to work by powering tiny airplanes. Check out the models below from the 70s or the video for something more recent to show you that, yes, this crazy idea actually works. Insect Power via Neatorama

I am working on an rc plane and wondered if there is a ratio between propeller size to wing size, wing size to lift, or weight to wing size. Thanks!

I am going to get a Super Cub trainer and I want to know how to mount a live feed camera and what type of camera

This is what happens when I get my hands on C.A.D!!!! And this is a pic of the RC plane I am in the works of designing. I dont have the ratios to make everything the proper size so I had to estimate. I plan on having it done by the end of my school year in September.

I have been trying on and off with the idea that the next generation knex, which are smaller and lighter would make a great plane. I realize that it will need something to cover the wings and a propellar but I think it may be possible. Any other ideas, thoughts, or tips are muchly appreciated.

My Mom recently aquired a new blender for christmas and I was able to salvage the very massive motor from it. it is a 120v 430w motor. I want to be able to make it remote control with an esc and some rc gear I have. I need help either creating one or somewhere to buy one that would work with this motor. I could also use arduino to control it if needed but would need a program. Thanks in advance for all help recieved.

Hey, I have no idea what to say, but these numbers do. 1: She's new here and would like to comprehend the awesomeness of this site 2: She always sees little planes made out of soda cans in mexico and local markets. How do you make them? (i couldn't find any when I searched)

Ok so I am constructing a scratch airplane as some of you may have read on m other questions. I have reached another dilemma, whether or not a moving rudder is completely crucial. I'm thinking i could get away with just having a stabalizer fin in place of the rudder. Any help from you pros? Thanks, Bud

There are lots of Instructables about making paper planes. This is a Good Thing. Like any other group of Instructables, they vary in quality from the appalling to the brilliant, but they almost all share the same Bad Thing. For projects where the behaviour of the finished item is all-important, they do not have a video to demonstrate the different throwing styles required and the expected flight characteristics. Please, paper engineers, can we have video of the flights?

Hi All, About 5 years ago my wife started to buy me a weekly magazine which had instructions plus parts to assemble a bi-plane (1930's). It cost appox €600 by the time, about a year, until we had collected the complete set ! I never started the project, every issue is as new, ie; complete set unopened. The wingspan is appox 1.5M. Ya its a big plane! If you are interested please make me an offer, say €200 ono. lorcanlive

The first manned, hydrogen-powered plane has been successfully tested in the skies above Spain, its makers say.The small, propeller-driven craft, developed by aviation giant Boeing, made three short flights at an airfield south of Madrid, the company said.It was powered by hydrogen fuel cells, which produce only heat and water as exhaust products. The tests could pave the way for a new generation of greener aircraft, the company said.Boeing's chief technology officer John Tracy said the flights were "a historical technological success" and "full of promises for a greener future".Small futureThree test flights of the two-seater aircraft took place in February and March at an airfield at Ocana, south of Madrid. The plane was modified to include a hybrid battery and fuel cell system used to power an electric motor coupled to a conventional propeller. Hydrogen-powered planes have been flown before, but never with a human pilot onboard.BBC Story

I plan to order my plane ticket online, using priceline. What happens when you do that? Do they e-mail it to you? What will happen at the airport, ie, what will I have to do in order to get onto my flight? Also, my flight makes multiple stops. Will I have to claim my luggage at each stop and move it to the new plane i'll be in? Thanks, I really have no idea about flying XD

Hi all, Weird one but as part of our Christmas party we want to have a range of competitive games and challenges which we can take part in as groups. The idea here is that we want the finale to be building and flying "something" which can carry a Santa as far as possible and whoever's get's the further wins... I have never bought, made or played with any toy planes, drones, anything that flies etc so I wondered if there was a basic list of items we'd need to put these together? I should imagine we don't want them to take more than a few hours to make in total, and they should be powered by a motor and remote control? Any assistance you can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Kate
