Replacing a Pentair Pleated cartridge?

Oh this is not funny. I am trying to replace the cartridge not clean it, that's easy. With this cartridge you must take the hard plastic core out of the old one ad put it back into the new one. I have no idea how to get it back in there. The top of the cartridge hole is very rubbery. So the plastic core will not slide easily. Let me know if you figure it out.[some time this summer] since it only has to be replaced once every 6 years or so.

Dumpster Pools Invade Brooklyn

Over in Brooklyn, some overheated and dedicated folks have turned some dumpsters into pools for their very own urban pool party. Not too shabby for a budget of a few thousand bucks. I wonder if they can connect them together to get a proper bit of space to swim in.via Treehugger

Burning barrel in the pool

Questions for you scientific types. Would this work: I have a 3,000 gallon inground pool and no heater. If I took a barrel, stuck it in the shallow end just a half inch above being totally submerged, and lit a fire inside it it would it work to heat the water around it and eventually heat up the pool?

Clear Pool Table

Not only is this pool table pretty amazing for being see-through and having the same action as a regular pool table, it's also a senior project that has been turned into a real business. Personally, I'm still a sucker for the felt and not being distracted by all the slick rails underneath. Also, at AUS $40,000 it's deep in luxury territory.I still hem and haw about dropping a few bucks to play on a nice, clean table at a parlor and only get a few games a year in at a friend's house (thanks, Jeff!). But if you have pools full of cash, here's one for you. Link

diy pool heater

I have tried so many different ways to heat my pool water and have had little luck. One way I did it was to take about three hundred feet of black 1/2" drip line and run it around the pool rim. I supplied cold water from a smalloutlet attached to the return line, using the power of the filtration pump to move the water from the pool through thecoil and I adjusted the flow to about half of the normal, then at the end I had the heated water re-enter the pool. Iwould say the water got to about 100 degrees, by the time it went through the drip line. The problem is that it wasn'tefficient enough to have any real effect on the pool water temperature which stays at about 60-65 even on the hottest days. I live in the Sacramento area of California, and we get pretty hot summers, usually about 90-105. Any suggestions on how I could make this idea more efficient? My pool water temp is always too cold to swim in, and I have a capacity of 12,000 gallons.

Outdoor Pool Table?

There are lots of used pool tables for sale for under $250. Any ideas for how to convert them for outdoor use? I'm thinking of just spraying the whole thing, except the felt, with a few coats of marine varnish. Then just keeping it covered. I live in the NW and of course it's mostly drizzly around here in the winter time. The big thing is keeping expansion and contraction to a minimum and sealing the wood. This doesn't have to be tournament grade, just something to entertain the kids for a few years.

Swimming pool cleaner/filter

Hello, I have an old (about 50 years) 50.000 liters (13 208.6026 US gallons) swimming poll that doesn't have any kind of cleaning or filtering machinery (if you know what I mean) so it's just like buried water tank :). The problem is that it's often filled with grass, leaves and bugs that sink to the bottom of the pool and I don't know how to get rid of them. I have a water pump that I use to empty the pool that takes about 2 liters/second that I'd like to use to "vacum" clean the pool floor but I don't really know how Any ideias? thanks!

Will painting a swimmimg pool a dark color promote algae to grow more than a light colored painted pool?

I am picking a new color for my inground swimming pool with filter no heater. Wanted to change to color from a basic light blue to a more modern darker color.  Was told dark colors allow algae to grow more than light colors.  Any truth to that statement?  Also because the pool is not heated which color would help keep the water warm?  I am guessing that a dark bottom pool would be warmer than a light bottom pool.

How can you keep horseflies away from a pool area? Answered

So, I was swimming at my friends pool today, and 5 of us were bitten by horseflies multiple times. Is there any kind of natural repellent to keep horseflies away from their pool area? Also, they have a bunch of flowers around the pool, so if there is anyway to repel just the horseflies, and not the pollenating bees, that would be great.

iRobot Scholarship idea : Pool Cleaner

I've seen mods for the roombas before, where the robots are water sealed, and then the wheels are turned into propellers. My idea is that I could water proof the robot in plexi glass, or something, and then a net on it, to collect all the leaves, dead bugs, and other stuff that collects on the surface of a pool. normal pool cleaners only vacuum the floor of a pool, and it takes days for floating leaves and other grime to sink to the bottom. With a robot like this, I could just set it in the pool, and let it clean everything up. What's nice is, when company is coming over, it's embarrassing to have a dirty pool...this modification would allow you to quickly clean up your pool-even on short notice. Update (for some clarification): What I would want to do, is make a case for it, so that you can simply remove the wheels, and connect the propellers/steering device to where the wheels were, then just place the roomba in the watertight case, and it would be able to swim around and clean! Also, i'm working on some sketches of how it would work. I'll post those when they are done.

Remote control pool heat pump

I want to interface a esp8266 to my pool heat pump, the heat pumps all show 3 and 2 wire access. But it's not clear if i just put 12vac via a relay on the pins or not? Also the 2 wire connect appears to be digital?Any advice would be appreciated.Ps.. I have already had success controlling the valve actuators with 24vac and of course the pump with 120v relay. Just need advice on the heater.

Thoughts on this method to heat my pool? Answered

So, I have an intex easy-set 12' pool. We have finally leveled the ground and re-filled it and it works great. I live in Texas the swim season is pretty long already. I have this all rigged up with a bungee cord tether so I can swim in place for exercise. I dug out the center to give me another foot depth where I needed it. I also have a solar cover and the entire thing is covered by an elevated parachute tent for shade/wind block. (Also modesty). For now the water warms up significantly enough by about 10 am without much heat loss at night. I have thought long an hard and this is what I have come up with to heat it during the colder months. I can build a typical solar collector with hoses and hook it to either my saltwater sand pool pump or the cheapy pool pump it came with (which would be better?) then put it on top of a metal roof piece in the yard slightly elevated from rain water, then attach radiant floor heating mats underneath it. I am hoping this would provide a boost of heat on less sunny days or when it is significantly cold, like December. With a much cheaper energy bill. I am guessing I will need to insulate the heating things a bit or something. Feel free to suggest anything. I am just kinda in plan mode atm.

Peltier Cooler/Heater - Pooling Brainpower

I recently acquired a thermoelectric mini fridge. As a fridge, it doesn't work so very well - it will get down to ~50 degrees with an ambient temperature of 70. So, I took it apart. You know the saying: "If it ain't broke - fix it until it is." So I now have a peltier effect cool/heater. I put my meat thermometer on the cold side with the fan off - and it gets down to freezing (probably a bit below). On the hot side, with a big sink and fan - it seems to be ~85 at it's warmest point (this sink is about half a square foot and an inch deep). Ideas on where to use? It's 110 service.... It literally almost killed me a few days ago when I touched a transistor sink that was part of the rectifier circuit while holding a plate that was grounded (I got knocked out for a few seconds) I've got a couple ideas, I just figured I'd pool brain power and see what happens :p
