I am proposing a potato gun contest but not any kind of potato gun contest. i am proposing a concealed weapons potato gun contest. air or combustion and it has to screw apart to fit in a briefcase or on your person it can also already be small enough so that you wont have to take it apart use your imagination i am eager to see what people come up with also disguised potato guns are also welcome. thanks for humoring me PhD

Calculating Drag When Firing Potato Launcher and Design Specifications

I'm interested in making a pneumatic potato launcher, I've found plenty information on that but I want to hit a target 255 meters away at an angle of 45 degrees. I calculated that I would need an initial velocity of approximately 50 m/s without wind resistance. The object being launched is an average sized potato under normal weather conditions. With wind resistance, what initial velocity will be required to hit the target? Please explain the process by which you came to the answer so that I may use the same method in future endeavors with different angles and distances. Also, just how much pressure would be required to launch a potato and achieve that speed, and to what specifications would the launcher need to be built i.e. how large the gas chamber will need to be, length of barrel, etc...

Unconventional Potato Salad

Do you love a potato salad that's out of the norm? Olive oil, or mayo? Heavily spiced, or simple? This one by The Kitchn, with kalamata olives and parsley, got me thinking. How far out of the envelope can you go with potato salad? A family member makes a fantastic one with bacon bits and dill. I've never made potato salad, and I'm curious what fun combination are out there.

Pringles ARE Potato Crisps (Chips)

Procter & Gamble will be forced to pay tens of millions of pounds in VAT after losing a legal battle with the (UK) taxman over its Pringles snack. The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Inland Revenue, which maintained that Pringles constitute a potato snack and are, therefore, liable for VAT (tax). The Appeal Court judges disagreed with a previous ruling that the low potato content (42%) exempted Pringles from VAT.See here for BBC article

Potatobots Take Paris, New York, China and beyond

Ï»¿Tech meets art as students learn what makes machinery tick, and use those parts to anthropomorphize potatoes.  Not only do they make crazy creatures, they write back-stories for them as well.  "Each year, my students and I take apart old electronics (VCRs, computers, clock radios, and the like). We use the parts like the parts for the old-school Mr. Potato Head kits. In the 50′s, you didn’t get the big plastic potato, you just got face and body parts. We use the gears, springs, screws, wires, and other pieces as the body parts for our Potatobots. We photograph them on blue paper, and then I use GIMP to place them into scenes of the students’ choosing." Find out what happens when a Potatobot falls into a wormhole and how Tim got so much camel:  http://potatobots.wordpress.com/ Did I mention they can shoot lasers from their eyes?  Who knew playing with food could be so much fun?

potato cannon engineering survey

Hey, I need help from people who have built or bought potato cannons. my capstone high school senior engineering project is centered around building a better potato cannon, and part of the project is doing some market research. I've got a quick (10 question) survey that's built to just get an idea of problems with current potato cannons, the kind of demographic that generally uses them, etc. Please help with this project. I'll probably post instructions on making it here when we're done. here's the link to the survey. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PTNSBJW thanks if you can help.

Figuring Out Acceleration on a Potato Gun

My newest craze is potato cannons. I built a simple potato cannon powered with hairspray. I didn't plan out ratios of chamber volume to barrel volume, but I must have guessed pretty well because the potatos go far. Really far. I shoot them in an empty bean field and they stay in the air for 10 seconds before hitting the ground at what I guess is 300 yards away. I want to measure it to be sure. I'm probably exaggerating the distance out of sheer amazement. But the potato goes really far. I got to thinking, though, that I could go beyond just shooting the potatoes, and actually turn this into something useful. If there was a way to determine the acceleration of the potato inside the barrel, that would be super cool. I've had a few ideas on this so far:The most complicated involves drilling holes on each side of the barrel. The holes would be every inch the entire length of the barrel. On one side led's would be installed and wired in parallel to remain on constantly. On the other side photoresistors would be installed and also wired in parallel with a microcontroller. When the potato traveled down the barrel it would block the light to some of the photoresistors and the microcontroller would get a readout. If there was a way to program this whole system and get a graph on a computer of the acceleration/time curve, that would be awesome!! Another way would yield a less accurate number. Shooting the cannon straight up and timing how long it takes the potato to hit the ground would give you the initial velocity. Vf = Vi + Gt, so: -2Vi = -9.81t . Once the initial velocity is known, if the time it takes for the potato to leave the barrel can be figured out, the acceleration could be figured out.Let me know what you think!Note: I will attach images as they come.

Underwater Jetpack Project. [HELP NEEDED]

Im planning on making an underwater jetpack something like this. However I'm a bit to dumb to figure out all the ESC and electronic components of brush-less motor systems.   Im also limited because this is a school project and in order to be reimbursed the materials need to come from amazon.  I will be using it in a chlorinated pool for demonstration but salt water resistance would be nice.  My requirements are as follows:  1.  Propeller must be covered as I may do another project after this one that requires fingers (im thinking 6in diameter pvc pipe with chicken wire or a metal grill over the ends) 2. Modifiable for different circumstances.  (I already cut up an old backpack and screwed a plywood board to it for mounting the propellers and  batteries, however I may decide to go with hand or foot mounting instead.   3. A trigger operable switch. (Cordless drill style although I don't care that much about speed control.   I'm planning this project to be for a senior year high school project (next year) so I have plenty of time. Do you guys think something like this would work for the propellers?  Their for air so I would expect significantly reduced performance in water.  However if they are to high rpm/low torque to spin properly in water perhaps I could keep the enclosure and switch out the motors for higher torque ones.

Idea for a new cooking contest/challenge!

Creative Leftovers Challenge! 1) Create 1 meal as your base.  Has to be at least a main course and 1 side that will last through the whole challenge (Example - Steak, salad, and baked potatoes counts as a main course w/ 2 sides) 2) Create at least 1 way of using up the leftovers WITHOUT having the exact same thing each night and using as much of the original meal for 2 dinners (Example - Steak tacos (uses 1/2 steak and all of salad) and mashed potatoes (uses all baked potatoes w/ extra) for Leftover Dinner 1.  Chopped steak (uses last of steak) w/ gravy or sour cream over potato cakes (uses the last of the mashed potatoes) for Leftover Dinner 2) 3) All 3 meals must be posted together in a single step-by-step Instructable w/ each meal being 1 step.  Most creative/wild of the edible entries wins! It's just a thought...

Calling all Potato Gun Aficionados and wanna be Combustion Scientists

This is message to anyone who enjoys hearing the sound of forced combustion, or better yet, the loud crack of a potato gun being fired. My co-conspirator and I are in need of some mathematic assistance. Ideally we are looking for a “magic” formula concerning barrel length to blast chamber ratio for optimal performance. The ideal fuel would be propane or butane. We have been using a 4” by 33” blast chamber coupled with a 3” by 44” barrel. So far, we have had significant success with this combination, but are curious if there is a better ratio to use. With our current specs, we are able to shoot a 3 – 4 lb. ball of plaster over 250 yards (this is the carry distance, not the total distance traveled) at a 47 degree angle. If anyone out there knows a formula or has advice on Blast Chamber to Barrel ratios we are greatly interested to hear what you have to say.

Pneumatic soda can cannon on Mythbusters?

I just watched a Mythbusters where they made a pneumatic soda can gun.  Go to 5:50 in this video to see their description of it.  Go to 7:00 to see it in action.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZMYuQ5daXxk&feature;=related My questions are: what is the "fast acting valve" he used?   How do you refill that thing? Anyone seen an instructable for something similar?  I've seen lots of PVC versions, but I like the metal version because it's sexier looking, and potentially higher pressure/power. Thanks!

Airsoft Tension/Compression Mortar

I've been looking for a way to make an airsoft mortar which uses either tension (by way of wrist rocket or similar bands) or compression (by way of a spring). I'm thinking it'd be similar to the trip mine here:https://www.instructables.com/id/Build-an-Airsoft-Trip-Mine/If anybody could give me ideas or post an instructable, that would be great. I don't want to use air compressors or light anything on fire, because it's just not practical mid game (that would also be just a manipulation of a potato gun). I also think compression or tension could be a lot safer if done properly. Any ideas on making shells to hold airsoft bb's and properly disperse them when fired would be great too.P.S. I'm totally willing to offer my input on the situation if somebody else wants to collaborate on such an 'ible.

Demo (Contractor) Bags Are Sometimes Better than Garbage or Other Bags

Folks use garbage bags for storing and hauling .  Problem is, garbage bags rip easily and usually are good for one use. Demo bags are woven from polypropelene and are strong and  can be re-used.. Haul one load, dump it, bring the bag back,  Refill and repeat. Or use it for moving. No worries about ripping. They are not waterproof or completely dustproof. So one may wish to line it with a plastic bag. http://ecobrooklyn.com/demo-bags-trash-bag-alternative/ I think I may try to use this as a potato bag for growing potatoes a described in an earlier instructable

Non Milk Cream for allergies

Hello everyone, I have a peanut like allergy to MILK.. and all its parts, all 35 parts, eg. Whey A lot of recipes call for Milk, to make cream like cream of Potato & Corn soup, or creamy mashed potatoes.  There is a vegetable oil based whipping cream that tastes good, but, does not cook at all (I tried) so what can I do to make creamy soups, stews etc, that call for milk, cream etc.? Soya Milk (just a name) , does not churn into butter or cream very well at all. Unless you use the brand called Silk, which is the best for coming close to the milk feel and taste, but it does not become creamy either. Almond Milk as well does not become creamy, so what to do? As a side topic, how about Cheese, what is a good substitute for that? Thanks everyone in advance for at least looking at this topic.

Electrical excitement (not)

I was going to fry some potatoes, but my electrical ring failed with arcing, smoke, noise & sparks... I'm not happy. I've got the ring to replace, a pan, and I've got sooty-oil to clean up. And no fried-food. And the place stinks of burned-oil. And I've lost / spoiled half a bottle of fresh oil. Oh, and I'll have to pay for the electricity that did this too. And I need some 30A fuse wire.

Airsoft/Spudgun crossover: Anti-Personnel Explosive thingies

Its a PVC/ABS thing that works like a spud gun, but launches a powder cloud (and potentially BB's). It's remote-triggered, so it can be buried underground, and only the top has to be removed, so it can be permanent. It works in the same way as a spud gun. I'll try to get diagrams up tomorrow, and if I can build it, pictures and an instructable, of course.

Happy Thanksgiving.  On the 25th I made an apple pie with a crumb top and on the 26th I'll make a green bean casserole and mashed potatoes. My dad will make the turkey and he also made Crab Dip-it and a Pumpkin pie. The day a lot of the fat americans gorge themselves half to death, and the rest also gorge themselves, just not as much. Remember: "Don't panic! It's organic." And, "Make your Plastic Fantastic."
