potato vodka?

I am currently in an issoalted camp in the north and am interesting in making some potato vodka.  Potatoes are readily available and I can scrounge the materials for a still. But there is not a pressure cooker here. Could I cook the potao mash/juice in a regular pot on the stove? I know a make shift pressure cooker is proably dangerous and totaly out of the question, although it did cross my mind.

Unconventional Potato Salad

Do you love a potato salad that's out of the norm? Olive oil, or mayo? Heavily spiced, or simple? This one by The Kitchn, with kalamata olives and parsley, got me thinking. How far out of the envelope can you go with potato salad? A family member makes a fantastic one with bacon bits and dill. I've never made potato salad, and I'm curious what fun combination are out there.

Potato cannon efficiency? Answered

I created a potato cannon that only has straight pieces of PVC.I have seen other designs where the combustion chamber is wrapped around 180 degrees with two elbow pieces thus making the cannon more compact.  Does anyone know which design is more efficient as in terms of launch power and speed?

Are potato cannons legal in Michigan?

We have been using potato cannons in a BSA camporee and someone just told us that these cannons are illegal. When they are used they are in a safe place, like a rifle range. The cannons are mounted so they can only go up and down and not side to side. If you know of a Michigan state document I can use to show the legality, please let me know.

Calculating Drag When Firing Potato Launcher and Design Specifications

I'm interested in making a pneumatic potato launcher, I've found plenty information on that but I want to hit a target 255 meters away at an angle of 45 degrees. I calculated that I would need an initial velocity of approximately 50 m/s without wind resistance. The object being launched is an average sized potato under normal weather conditions. With wind resistance, what initial velocity will be required to hit the target? Please explain the process by which you came to the answer so that I may use the same method in future endeavors with different angles and distances. Also, just how much pressure would be required to launch a potato and achieve that speed, and to what specifications would the launcher need to be built i.e. how large the gas chamber will need to be, length of barrel, etc...

Pringles ARE Potato Crisps (Chips)

Procter & Gamble will be forced to pay tens of millions of pounds in VAT after losing a legal battle with the (UK) taxman over its Pringles snack. The Court of Appeal ruled in favour of the Inland Revenue, which maintained that Pringles constitute a potato snack and are, therefore, liable for VAT (tax). The Appeal Court judges disagreed with a previous ruling that the low potato content (42%) exempted Pringles from VAT.See here for BBC article

I've got a quick (10 question) survey that's built to just get an idea of problems with current potato cannons, the kind of demographic that generally uses them, etc. Please help with this project. I'll probably post instructions on making it here when we're done. here's the link to the survey. http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PTNSBJW thanks if you can help.

Will this launcher design work?

Concept - A hybrid-launcher (combustion and pneumatics) with interchangeable barrels for various projectile types So the design is pretty simple, in the back of the gun launcher thing (we’ll call it ‘the weapon’ for now) will be a propellant chamber measuring 2.5” wide and 1.5’ long. On one end of the propellant chamber will be an unscrewable coupler. On the other end, a 2.5” ball valve. Attached to the ball valve will be the female end of a 2.5” coupler (without cap) From here will be the interchangeable barrels, which are simple. The barrels would consist of the male end of the 2.5” coupler and a 2.5” width converter, converting the width from 2.5" to various different sizes for the different projectile sizes (this would have to be one piece for durability, idk if such a piece exists, I hope it does, if not, i can make one) the barrel itself would measure 3’ in length A Shrater valve (bike tire valve) will be installed on the propellant chamber (for pneumatic power). A bike pump would be mounted on the weapon (like a shotgun kinda) An ignitor will be installed on the back of the chamber, mounted on the unscrewable coupler.

Figuring Out Acceleration on a Potato Gun

My newest craze is potato cannons. I built a simple potato cannon powered with hairspray. I didn't plan out ratios of chamber volume to barrel volume, but I must have guessed pretty well because the potatos go far. Really far. I shoot them in an empty bean field and they stay in the air for 10 seconds before hitting the ground at what I guess is 300 yards away. I want to measure it to be sure. I'm probably exaggerating the distance out of sheer amazement. But the potato goes really far. I got to thinking, though, that I could go beyond just shooting the potatoes, and actually turn this into something useful. If there was a way to determine the acceleration of the potato inside the barrel, that would be super cool. I've had a few ideas on this so far:The most complicated involves drilling holes on each side of the barrel. The holes would be every inch the entire length of the barrel. On one side led's would be installed and wired in parallel to remain on constantly. On the other side photoresistors would be installed and also wired in parallel with a microcontroller. When the potato traveled down the barrel it would block the light to some of the photoresistors and the microcontroller would get a readout. If there was a way to program this whole system and get a graph on a computer of the acceleration/time curve, that would be awesome!! Another way would yield a less accurate number. Shooting the cannon straight up and timing how long it takes the potato to hit the ground would give you the initial velocity. Vf = Vi + Gt, so: -2Vi = -9.81t . Once the initial velocity is known, if the time it takes for the potato to leave the barrel can be figured out, the acceleration could be figured out.Let me know what you think!Note: I will attach images as they come.

Potatobots Take Paris, New York, China and beyond

Ï»¿Tech meets art as students learn what makes machinery tick, and use those parts to anthropomorphize potatoes.  Not only do they make crazy creatures, they write back-stories for them as well.  "Each year, my students and I take apart old electronics (VCRs, computers, clock radios, and the like). We use the parts like the parts for the old-school Mr. Potato Head kits. In the 50′s, you didn’t get the big plastic potato, you just got face and body parts. We use the gears, springs, screws, wires, and other pieces as the body parts for our Potatobots. We photograph them on blue paper, and then I use GIMP to place them into scenes of the students’ choosing." Find out what happens when a Potatobot falls into a wormhole and how Tim got so much camel:  http://potatobots.wordpress.com/ Did I mention they can shoot lasers from their eyes?  Who knew playing with food could be so much fun?

Make a small battery operated spark gap?

I want to make a potato gun but I don't want to use a grill ignitor (unreliable) and I don't really want to buy a taser (kind of expensive) to light it. I would really like to build some simple battery powered high voltage circuit capable of making a small spark or operating a spark plug. I would like it to meet these requirements. 1. Minimal circuitry. 2. No flyback. 3. Fits in/on an altoids tin I'm still just beginning to understand circuitry so the less complex the better.

What kind of wood to use to build a potato bin? Answered

I want to build a potato/onion bin for storage but i am not sure what kind of wood i am supposed to use if it even matters. I have seen lots of plans and pictures for bins so I don't need that, but it never says if i have to use a specific type of wood. I'd like to use plywood since i have a lot of it but most builds show pine boards being used.
