It’s not yet the middle of March, which means plenty of time for planning and executing the perfect April Fools Day prank. (Also, there’s a contest you should enter if you’ve got a great prank to share.) HQ has been batting around prank ideas for a solid month, and Mikeasaurus is about to ruin a lifetime of polite Canadian good karma with an expanding list of prank ideas. We’ll be attempting to wire my brake lights to a hidden car horn later this month, and Mikeasaurus has been surreptitiously stealing trash from around the office to gently prank the trash collectors at his house. (Making Ghandi look scary was just the tip of the iceberg.) Most of our office pranks are harmless, and harmlessness is one of the goals in our prank contest. A quick surprise, easy cleanup, and no bodily harm are the guiding principles for sustaining a prank war. Rapid escalation leads to eventual hurt feelings or a hospital trip, neither of which are useful for next year’s April Fools shenanigans. As of March 12th, the prank war is still cold at Instructables headquarters. Randofo (a man who knows his way around a prank or two) and Mikeasaurus (who is no stranger to pranks himself) are taunting one another with various super-secret pranks that will be deployed on April 1st. Pranking Mr. Saurus from afar was an office pastime while he was relegated to the frozen tundra of urban Vancouver last year. Skirting the fine line between hilarious electronics-based pranks and the very real possibility of an eagle-eyed x-ray operator reporting us to the authorities prevented anything too terrible from happening to him in Canada. But now he’s within arm’s reach of his prank nemesis. Here's a quick rundown of past pranks perpetrated by Instructables staff at HQ: The Prank Box - randofo "It is very funny to watch people ponder the implications of the device, reluctantly turn it on, and then stress out when they cannot turn it off. It is even funnier to get panicked emails from your friend in Canada after you mail it to him without any explanation, and he decides to ignore the directions on the box and turn it on." Watch the video Car Horn Prank Box - randofo "A beloved coworker is returning from Canada soon and in his honor I have created the car horn prank box. Basically, when the red button is pressed, and an LED blinks indicating that there is thirty seconds in which to hide the box somewhere dark. Once the thirty seconds expire, the next time that the box sense light, the car horn honks very loudly. The amount of potential mischief that this device can produce makes it a perfect welcome back gift." Watch the video Mystery Beeping Prank - randofo The Mystery Beeping Prank is a device hidden in a hollowed out book that beeps intermittently at different frequencies. I made this because I am surrounded by a lot of incredibly creative people who have a penchant for pranking one another, and this seemed like the most subtly annoying thing that I could think of. Watch the video LieDar - FAT lab Sometimes you just want to pretend to be driving around in a driverless car. You're just a rented Fiat, a few hours of 3D printing, and a pair of big brass ball bearings from pranking an entire city with technological delight, then confusion, then concern. Watch the video Air Horn Office Chair Prank - mikeasaurus The office is a great place to prank your coworkers. Interrupt the white noise of typing keyboards and the hum of the photocopier with a blaring klaxon hidden under someone's office chair. Watch the video Magnetic Axe Prank - mikeasaurus Good with metal? Try hacking an axe in half, adding some powerful magnets, and pretending to put an axe through the hood of a car, into someone's nice stainless fridge, or anything else ferrous and nefarious. Phony Fliers with Rip-Off Tabs - mikeasaurus Surprise and delight the local nerd community with these phony fliers. References to Star Trek, Star Wars, Blade Runner, and Half-Life abound. Make your own, set up a dummy email address, and watch the weird responses roll in. WC White Box of Doom - MC Langer Not technically from HQ, but MC Langer spent enough time at HQ to feel like part of the family. His "Water Closet White Box of Doom" is hilarious, ingenious, and unlikely to cause permanent harm. He also tests it on himself, which is awesome. (It's a jar of water in a first aid kit that tips the water onto someone if they trigger the toilet seat switch. It also includes a Bazinga scroll that pops out to let the victim know that they've been the victim of a classic jape.) Watch the video How To Put A Stapler In Jello - kazmataz Because Jim shouldn't have all the fun. (And Dwight shouldn't get all the jello.) Screaming Trash Bin Prank - Jayefuu Electronic trash cans seemed like such a good idea. At first. Then they stopped working reliably. Then they started screaming bloody murder thanks to Jayefuu. Hi all, My girlfriend and I are going to be making a haunted house and we're looking for ideas. We have access to an old abandoned house and we're going to pretend that one of us is a house inspector or a rat catcher or something and have friends set their friends up for a Halloween scare. We've got some ideas (right now we're trying to build an r/c servo that pulls the pin holding up a painting so that it suddenly falls off the wall.... Tina built an r/c prank flashlight that we can remotely turn off (so that the flashlight 'fails' in a dark scary room) and we have some old creepy porcelain dolls that we want to remotely activate (heads turning, arms moving, that sort of thing) but we're looking for more ideas. We will invite the guest to inspect the house with one of us while the other person controls the pranks and gags. Anyway, if you have any great ideas or know of some good resources I would love to catch your feedback. Thanks! DAZU

Since this seems to be the popular place for posting user made competitions I thought I'd post mine here!I'm offering cookie patches to the first three people to follow my instructable and make a laughing can prank. To win a patch you must make the laughing can prank, take a photo of the electronics before it goes in the can and film you using it on someone! (fake reactions won't win a prize)The instructable can be seen here. Thanks!

A while ago I read an 'ible about how to turn on your schools sprinkler system as a last day prank. BUT What about discreetly installing a remote activator thing in the valve boxes, to turn on all of the sprinklers, inpependently of whatever is there already - rc system, 12v battery, relay, diodes. Over the year you could do this to every valve, and trigger them right at the end. Unfortunately, living in the UK, no schools have sprinkler systems - somewhere where they do, someone try this!

Next week we'll be starting an April Fools Day Contest. So start thinking of some clever ideas for a prank that you'd like to pull on someone else. Prizes will be supplied by ThinkGeek. The only rule is that there has to be something that you make for the prank. Any idea that you have for the prank needs to be fleshed out as your own project with original photos. Pictures of the prank being pulled are even better! More details about the contest and prizes to be announced later this week. UPDATE: The contest page is here.

So, What is the funniest prank you have ever played on someone? Mine was on my cousin with his new car. He was bragging for like a month that it is the best and will never break down. So, I siphoned out the gas and rigged an m-80 and a really big smoke bomb to a remote det. i had. His heart probably stopped when he heard the pop and saw the smoke in his new car. priceless.

For reference, here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G5zCiBeQxRI&list;=UUCsj3Uk-cuVQejdoX-Pc_Lg&index;=3&feature;=plcp Can someone help me with making a watch that can make a big flash on command for doing pranks like these. He has someone near his wrist, and I want it to be a watch if possible. How can I begin, I just need ideas. Could it ever be wireless, or how should I do it? Thanks!

I just found this site and tested it out... And it works!Basically it's a site that you pick out a prank message, enter a phone number, and in a few minutes or more, the site calls the phone and pranks them with the message you picked out. Some of the prank messages on there would be the RickRoll, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, and 7 days (from the movie The Ring). They claim to not share the numbers at all, and lots of people seem to have used it without any problems either, so I'm considering it safe. I'm going to have some fun with this and my friends over the next few weeks... : D

So this topic is about the april fools day project: prank contest. After seeing some entries I have been wondering. Are some of these entries allright with the contest rules? I want to start with saying that I don't want to bash on the ibles I'm going to use as examples. For me they have the right to win just as much as the next person. But the rule of the contest clearly states: The prank can be simple or complex, involve yarn or a supercomputer, but it must involve some physical object that you make for the prank And the way I see it some of these entries don't live up to that. Like for example the speed trap prank www.instructables.com/id/Speed-trap-prank/ . It's a great prank but it doesn't involve making anything. He uses a hairdryer and a vest and a car. In my opinion If he would have made a fake speed gun it would count. Ofcourse I can see why using a hairdryer would be easier but that's not really the point. Another example is "Make anyone smell like chicken prank!" www.instructables.com/id/Make-Anyone-Smell-Like-Chicken-Prank/ . All he does is stick a Chicken Bullion Cube in a showerhead. So that isn't really making a physical object is it? Other ibles do it according to the rules like the funny www.instructables.com/id/T-Bar-for-the-Car/ or www.instructables.com/id/Simple-Mac-prank-using-Arduino/ . In both these instructables you are making some physical object. So i just want to get some clearity on what is in line with the rules of the contest and what is not. Again I don't have anything against the instructables I used as an example nor against the authors who made them. It's just that in my point of view they don't follow the rule. Unless ofcourse I missed something...

Check out the Top 5 April Fools' Day Pranks You Can Build in the Office I put together for Popular Mechanics! Certain holidays seem to have been created for DIY-ers, and April Fools' Day is certainly among them. No store-bought hand buzzer can stand up to a well-built, well-executed homemade prank, so we asked the chief geek from the gonzo builders at instuctables.com to pick his favorites from their new practical joke contest. Once you're suitably inspired by these projects, share your own antics right here to win $200--and enter PM's DIY Rally 2008 (only one day left!)

Were you Tee Pee'd last week? Was your car suran-wrapped? Was there Icy Hot on the toilet seat AGAIN? Did someone give you frozen mayonnaise when you asked for vanilla ice cream? How about the hand in the bowl of warm water trick? Something else? Something WORSE? Don't worry, and don't get mad............get even! This is THE place to scheme about how to get those pranksters back! Mines, tripwires, water balloons, lasers (to pop black water balloons of course), water sniper rifles, pimped out go karts (mounted with water balloon cannons), you name it! If it's a prank, and it soaks to the bone, it should be disscussed here! Soon, we'll make them wet and sorry they messed with you! (If they get you back, evaluate the prank, and read this paragraph again!)

Hi all, I'm building a haunted house and would like to make a prank flashlight that I can remotely turn off ("oops! The flashlight failed in the dark scary room!"). I'm using a 6V camping flashlight; my plan is to replace the big squareish 6V battery with 4 AA batteries (anyone know if that would work?); I would use the extra space in the battery housing to hide a remote-control system. Does anyone have any advice to build this prank? I don't know that much about r/c servos etc but I have a soldering kit and can follow instructions decently well enough :) Many thanks- Damian

My friends think there house is haunted, I really want to mess with them so i came up with this idea. Is there any way i can rig up the house lights rooms to turn on and off, I also need to way to make knocking and scratching noises, and lastly I need to way to get doors and cabinet doors to open. Can this also be done using a web sever so one can do this while on a laptop? I really have no clue where to start and any help will be amazing. Thank you!

So, as a school prank, I want to find a way to shutdown my teachers' computers with my phone. I have the Galaxy S3 in case you need to know. I see there are things that allow me to do it with a software installed on their computer, but I would prefer to avoid that if possible. Are there any apps or programs I can use to find local computers nearby and simply shut them down? Any and all help is welcome. Thanks!

I've seen a lot of entries to the April Fool's Project Prank Contest, but a lot of them aren't original - someone's made it before. Some of these have even made it to the front page (such as the Plastic Wrap Prank), even though they were simply either taken from youtube or have poor instructions. What I'm asking is: isn't it unfair for those who thought of their own ideas for pranks - like mine, and just because the idea hasn't been publicized much, it doesn't get much votes? Aren't we looking for creativity here, not popularity? (because, if you think about it, most people already know how to make the popular ones, and it would be unfair for an instructable about that to get the most votes) I'm not trying to discourage others to not make instructables anymore, I'm just trying to encourage a little creativity, to encourage members to add their own twists to it and stuff like that, rather than just copying and pasting others' ideas. Just a shoutout... Tell me, what do you think?

Urban Prankster is a website edited by Charlie Todd of Improv everywhere fame, and it chronicles all the pranks and shenanigans going on in different cities around the world.Unless you are a stiffly stifferson, you should really enjoy this blog, and, if you are lucky, you can find things going on in your area to take part in.I have done a few Improv Everywhere missions (slow mo home depot, mp3 experiment search for Steve, no shirts Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Best Buy mission (for which I am the youtube video thumbnail)), and can say from first hand experience that these public pranks are a lot of fun and a great way to meet interesting people.Urban Prankster

So I broke a wheel off my lawnmower, no big deal, just weld it back on. How was I supposed to know that a wooden stump would break it? Anyways, since i have a shitty flux core mig welder from Harbor Freight, I decided I'd ask a friend to use their gas mig to fix it. I bring the lawn mower over, bring the welder outside, clamp the wheel bracket back on, and start the weld. All of a sudden, there's a huge ball of fire all over my mask. I immediately stop welding, and jump backwards.. yelling out, while he sits there on the ground laughing. He switched the argon with acetylene, at 10psi. Not cool. It was hilarious, but not cool.

Anybody else see this? http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,484326,00.html ? Lots of us have re-arranged the letters on signs to spell funny (and occasionaly inappropriate) things, but these guys take the cake! So, what non-malicious pseudo vandalism have you seen (or participated in)?
