Prototype This premiers tonight

Prototype This premiers tonight on the Discovery Chanel. It stars Zoz, a good friend of mine from MIT. Here's what Zoz has to say about the premier:Dear lords of the realm,Please join me in advertisement-laden spirit this Wednesday for a thrilling three hours of television tomfoolery:8pm: Discovery Channel - season premiere of "Time Warp" produced by crop circle nemesis and doctor of weirdness John Tindall and co-hosted by Robots alum and all-around superhero Jeff Lieberman; followed by:9pm: Network Presidential debate - mix red food colouring with corn syrup and smear it on the screen so that all participants look like the blood-soaked zombies they are; wipe it off in time for:10pm: Discovery Channel - season premiere of "Prototype This" co-hosted by yours truly! That's right, the Apocalypse Now of television - the series that wouldn't die, that took longer than most Master's theses to make, is finally going to see the light of day!Representative websites here:http://dsc.discovery.com/tv/prototype-this/prototype-this.htmlhttp://blog.wired.com/geekdad/2008/10/preview-discove.htmlhttp://news.cnet.com/8301-13772_3-10016485-52.htmlTo anyone who got this shameless plug twice - take it as a compliment because I didn't want to miss anyone so this one is going only to important individuals, not lists! But still tell all your friends to watch so we can get good ratings and get picked up for more seasons so I don't have to find a real job! It's been a long and circuitous path from idea to actual show. In one of the first ideas, Squid Labs was going to prototype various ideas in a reality-TV-like show. To see how it's evolved, check out a couple of the casting reels we filmed starring Tim, Christy, Corwin, and me:MITERS Tour with TimSquid Labs tour with Christy, Corwin, and EricI've got Zoz's casting reel too, and I'll share that shortly.

Adobe ..... unable to load module - How to fix the start problem in regards to the video driver

I had to install Adobe Premier for a friend with no real clues. Anyway, all was good and registered but the first start was aborted with an error stating that a module for the graphics card could not be loaded. The misleading suggestion underneath, stating to updated the graphics driver was of little use as the latest Nvidia driver was already installed. A support request with Adobe gave the suggestion to fully uninstall all Adobe products, using their clean up tool. After that a reboot and fresh install of all. You guessed it, Premier CC would still refuse to start with the same error. Google was of no use this time but a system check revealed the fix: Premier was trying to load quite a few things but some have been blocked by the virus scanner for no good reason. After setting exceptions for the problematic files I also checked the firewall and gave full access to all Adobe Premier related tasks. And sure enough there was no error message anymore! So if your Adobe product fails to start with an error in regards to being unable to load a module you might want to disable your virus scanner and firewall to check if they are to blame. I hope this might help all those lost with no useful support.

There's a huge National Geographic ad on just about every topic that takes up the whole page. So much that I have to scroll down just to see a title. Can we get this removed? I know it'll probably be gone after the premiere anyway, so I'd also like to suggest not approving these kinds of ads in the future.

How can I fix the Drag and Drop functionality of my PC? Answered

Recently my computer has decided to stop allowing me to use drag and drop (dragging a file across the desktop, Dragging clips around in Premiere etc) It happens randomly, and there is no obvious cause for it. It can be fixed by relogging, however this solution is rather irritating. I've noticed it affects programs such as Illustrator too, whereby it gets stuck on one tool, and I cannot change it, I'm not sure if this problem is directly related, but it started at the same time. Again, restarting the program fixes this. I've never had this problem before, and I'm totally stumped at what to do to fix it. Any Ideas?

DIY Iron Man Costume Replica

Advanced Iron forum member TMP just completed his custom Iron Man costume just in time for the film's theatrical premiere. Incredible work! Just look at all those details!!!TMP says he spent $1500-2000 on the material compound alone, never-mind months of trial and error. Via Cool Stuff in SlashfilmIt looks a bit bulky, but it makes sense, a real metal costume would look much rougher than it does in the film (The movie's costume was made of rubber, so it could be more dynamic)It doesn't look as extreme as the film, but it certainly looks more real. Now, if only it could fly......Maybe we can expect more next year? There's quite a buzz for DIY Iron-Man costumes this year.

DIY Outdoor Event Searchlight

In am interested in building an outdoor event searchlight or advertising spotlight that you might find at the opening of a Hollywood premier. Basically, an intense beam of light projecting miles into the sky to attract people to a location.  I searched Instructables and found some projects for stage spotlights but nothing like an outdoor searchlight. I did locate some complicated Carbon Arc and Xenon lamp projects but these involved a lot of expertise in electrical engineering! I am a novice but I am comfortable with basic "household' wiring. With that said, my thought was to try using 7 or 8 (maybe more) 55w car Xenon HID (6000k range) headlights as my light source. Xenon HID produce three times the light output as standard halogen headlamps (3000 lumens vs 1000 lumens) and require less energy. The "conversion kits" come with the igniter module and inverter ( ballasts) which reduces the amount of electrical wiring. At this point, the power source could be to use 110v household AC current and then, using a AC to DC converter, turn it into DC voltage and let the "conversion kit" components change it back to AC.  From what little I know, Xenon HID take about 25,000 volts to start a Xenon bulb and then 80-90 volts to keep it operating. During operation the AC ballast frequency is usually in the 250 to 450 Hz range. Each bulb draws around 6.5 amps at startup and then stabilizes at around 3.8 amps. Next, I would place the bulbs into the center of a Ellipsoidal Reflector to direct the light skyward. Basically, the 7-8 Xenon HID bulbs would be secured to a piece of sheet metal and then surrounded by a reflector so it would be like a VERY large headlight pointing into the sky. In one of the YouTube videos, the guy used a trashcan as the housing. I am not looking for something this large but similar in concept.  I located an Ellipsoidal Reflector on Ebay for about $55 and then I might just build a housing around it.  But would the reflector be enough to concentrate the light into a strong beam? Or, would I need to have some sort of lens to focus the light? If anybody has constructed something similar of if you have any pointers on what to do, please let me know.

How to hook up a microphone to sound responsive led circuit?

I gutted the speakers a while ago for another project, but the leds from it still light up when plugged into an ipod. I would like to hook up a mic to it so that it will light up to noise instead of having it plug into an ipod, however the mic only has +/- terminals from what i can tell, and the headphone wire-input has 3. Another Star Wars?!

When I entered the lobby of our movie theater after watching the funny (yet disgusting at times) Zohan movie, I caught a glimpse of this trailer. At first, I thought it was a cartoony parody of starwars (perhaps a joke in that Panda movie, all I saw was Yoda). This could not be serious, the animation looked like something straight out of the Incredibles. After some investigation I discovered it was totally cereal. It is a trailer for a 90 minute long preview of a cartoon network series. Who would pay to go to the movies to watch a 90 minute preview?! This is the description of the youtube video:The 90-minute premiere episode of the CGI animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars will have a limited release in U.S. cinemas starting August 15th.Not only will this be the first 3-D animated movie for the highly-successful saga, but this will also be the first Star Wars movie not released through Twentieth Century Fox. Fox released all six Star Wars movies, plus the original microseries The Clone Wars on home video. But Warner Bros. and Turner Broadcasting will release Star Wars: The Clone Wars this time. The principle reason is that Turner's and W.B.'s subsidiary, The Cartoon Network, managed to snag the rights to the series from creator George Lucas.Star Wars: The Clone Wars on The Cartoon NetworkThe new series will premiere this fall on The Cartoon Network, later airing on TNT."I felt there were a lot more Star Wars stories left to tell," said George Lucas in the press release for Star Wars: The Clone Wars. "I was eager to start telling some of them through animation and, at the same time, push the art of animation forward.""Nothing like this has ever been produced for television," said Stuart Snyder, President/COO Turner Animation,Young Adults & Kids Media. "For 30 years, Star Wars has shown that it appeals to a huge breadth of fans. Star Wars: The Clone Wars on Cartoon Network will be appointment television for everyone in the family. We're thrilled to be working with Lucasfilm again and very excited to be playing a role in bringing this remarkable adventure to viewers."The Star Wars we all know and love has been reduced to a cheap cartoon, made with the sole purpose of trying to squeeze as much money out of the name as possible. Star Wars looks like a cheap joke now, it's just sad, really.

UPDATED What Airguns Do You Own/Recommend?

I ended up getting a Crosman Vantage. It was on sale for $70. I think the MSRP is $145. Yeah, I know, it's just a budget springer. But that was what I was looking for. Not something to last me the rest of my life. It has a good reputation for decent accuracy if you use the artillery hold. With 7.9 grain pellets it should be getting about 900 +/- FPS. It came in the mail the other day. Pyramid air has fast shipping. The wood is acceptable, and the barrel lock up is very solid and their is practically no barrel droop. I haven't shot it yet, but the barrel is very easy to cock for a sub magnum springer. Of course I only cocked it 80% of the way and I don't want to dry fire it. I have some Crosman Premier Hollow Points to try in it, as well as some cheap pointed pellets and destroyers I'll use to break it in. I think it will be fine for tin can killing. Not sure it's the best hunting implement, since the included scope is meh.

Available ONLINE: 09/27/08 Tesla: Totally Awesome! HISTORY HACKER show

THIS looks interesting ! By Helen A.S. PopkinMSNBCupdated 9:05 a.m. ET, Fri., Sept. 26, 2008Circuit-bending YouTube star Bre Pettis doesn't want you to know that before making his History Channel pilot, he hadn't seen The Prestige. It's not that he purposely failed to catch Chris Nolan's 2006 adaptation of the steam punk novel about rival magicians starring Batman (Christian Bale) and Wolverine (Hugh Jackman). It seems Pettis never got around to it. And by the time he started putting together History Hacker, premiering tonight at 8 p.m. and midnight, it was too late. ...At the turn of the century, electricity was magic, and really, it still is today, Pettis says."This (TV show) is for all the curious people out there who want to learn about the electricity that comes out of your wall. You can run a hair dryer from the electricity in your wall generated from a power plant far, far way. That blows my mind."...Here in the 21st century, Thomas Edison is the go-to guy when most people think of electricity. No wonder, given Edison's gift for self promotion and that he'd go so far as to electrocute kittens in public demonstrations meant to discredit Tesla's AC electricity in favor of his own DC current. (True story!)The LINK is HERE :-) To watch the entire show download from here.... be forewarned, it is REALLY long....

CNC Stepper Motor and Controller Board Inquiry: What is the torque, motor size, threshold for dremel tool to engrave ?

CNC Stepper Motor and Controller Board Inquiry:Even with the extensive research and links I have visited it seems I got the cart before the horse with a bit of ebay bidding fever in purchasing my stepper motor.I just purchased 4 pieces new SHINANO KENSHI Co. ball bearing stepper motors Part # STP-42D201-36, 1.8 DEG, 200 Step/Rev, 3.7V, 3.1A/Phase, Size 17 with a 5mm shaft. I will be making a computerized dremel tool ENGRAVER (not cutter) to start. I do understand that a CNC, for cutting out shapes, requires more torque than the STP-42D201-36 will put out. I however wish to engrave, only partially cut into the surface of wood to render my artwork, some which can be seen at http://designermite.net/. These will initially consist of line work but then later I will render halftone work.I do own and work with Gerber Advantage 6.0 Premier and Omega software with Gerber HS/15 PLUS plotter creating vinyl graphics and logos that you might see on store windows, car, truck and van lettering. So I do have a working knowledge of the basic skills needed.I need help on what sort of setup I should be leaning towards that would work with my CURRENT purchase. What is the torque rating, motor size, specs threshold for dremel tool to engrave properly? Some have been very helpful via email and for that I thank you and others have just lived up to thier names of being cranky, claiming they invented everthing under the sun, with short two word sarcastic answers when I actually wished to purchase their plans.. go figure.Thank you in advance for your timecnc, stepper motor, stepper motor control board, computerized router, engraving, CNC Router Plans, cnc engraver plans, CNC http://designermite.net/Homemade Milling Machine, homemade DIY cnc mill router machine,x axis y axis z axis, GCode, Computer Numeric Control, robotic systems ,computer parallel port, step and direction, DXF, plot, plt

Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary)

Now that Convert your Honda Accord to run on trash has won the Craftsman Workshop of the Future Contest, it's prepped to race to Mexico for a chance of winning $10,000.00!Our friends at The Shipyard and ALL Power Labs are running Escape from Berkeley (by any non-petroleum means necessary), the premier alternative-fuels road rally, for the second year in a row. Last year they escaped from Berkeley and fled to Vegas; this year they're running for the boarder. The directions are laid out for you, all you need to do is get to work. Will you be there? If so, be sure to document your alternative fuel project on Instructables!A road race to Mexico, no fuel allowed.June 12-16, 2009Berkeley, CA - "Escape from Berkeley (by any non petroleum means necessary)" is a road rally of alternatively powered vehicles from Berkeley, California to the US-Mexican Border. Part engineering problem, part artistic opportunity, the rally challenges contestants to start their "engines" on something other than petroleum based fuel, and by any means necessary, cause their "vehicles" show up at the border five days later - using only fuels/power/motive force scavenged for free along the route.Last years inaugural race took us from the DIY oasis of ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA, to the consumptive excess of Las Vegas, Nevada. Returning to compete for the second running of the race will be 1st Place Rally Winner Jack McCornack from Cave Junction, OR and Runner Up Wayne Keith from Springfield, AL. Registration for new racers is now open. Interested racers should write jim@allpowerlabs.org.All types of vehicles are welcome. All schemes for non-petroleum based transport are encouraged. In short, everything is permitted - just as long as your "fuel" is from a non-petroleum based source, your acquisition of it does not require money, and you start the race with no more than 10kwh of it on board. The full field of power generation and conversion is open for scavenging and creative power hacking.DARPA had a Grand Challenge. . . the rednecks a Cannonball Run. . . and the Auto X prize is still a year away. So in the meatime, NASA scientists and junkyard fabricators will go head-to-head in a no holds barred battle of engineering prowess and creative excess. Hanging somewhat in the balance are bragging rights for saving the world. That, and a grand prize of $10,000.Schedule:June 12th - Race begins at ALL Power Labs in Berkeley, CA. End and overnight in Parkfield, California, the Earthquake capital of the world.June 13th - 2nd leg start at Parkfield. End and overnight at El Mirage dry lake.June 14th - Day off at El Mirage dry lake for landspeed trials. Some EFB racers to run speed trials.June 15th - 3rd leg start at El Mirage. End at Salton Sea, California State Recreation Area.June 16th - 4th leg start at Salton Sea. End at the beach where the fence goes into the ocean at the Border Fields State Park, US Mexico Border."Some entries will arrive at the start line with extreme technical innovation. Others will arrive with only creative excess. The best entries, as well as the likely winners, will need to arrive with both." - Jim MasonNew York Times article on last year's race.

The Haney Group: Wall Street exposés (test) - une arnaque ?
