Armour preservation? Answered

Ok so I've made some plate armour before and I'm wondering what the best LOW BUDGET preservative would be? For the pieces I've made I used silicone spray because its thick enough, however I've read on another forum that some people use vaseline(without skincare additives). Now the core of my question: have any of you tried out different preservatives and if so, what is the best low cost solution?

fence preservation?

Any suggestions for keeping people from hopping my fence? They are bending my fence and trampeling my garden. Obviously electricution and barbed wire are not options. I wondered about solar lighting,(so the climbers could be seen) but I think the lights would be stolen.

preserving wood outside? Answered

I just scrounged a big round slab of a tree from a firewood seller. It is still green and about 32" across and 8" thick. My question is, how can I make it last a long time out in the weather all the time. I am using it as a knife and axe throwing target. I don't really want to spend a lot of money putting expensive varnish or wood preservatives on it! Any cheap recipes out there? Thanks, Triumphman.

How do I preserve a 4 lief clover? Answered

I want to preserve my first 4 leaf clover. This is the first 4 leaf clover I have ever found. I was just sitting there enjoying the evening breeze and there it was right in front of me, it is the 649 lottery night and I have two tickets. I hope I did not use up my good luck finding the 4 leaf clover. And I get preparing the leaf by book pressing as in this Instructable. https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Preserve-a-Four-Leaf-Clover/ I want to do it right the first time in resin. Is there an Instructable on suspending delicate  leaves in resin?

Is there a way to preserve chocolate- as in for an art piece?

I make chocolate art pieces and I am looking for a way to mount one on a wall.  I put a couple of the pieces in an art show into plexiglass frames but they had to sit tabletop.  Maybe encased in resin, but I would need a cold resin so as not to melt the chocolate.  Below is a photo of some of my chocolate art I would like to preserve/encase and mount on the wall but I really don't know how! This photo looks wall-mounted but again, it was shot tabletop.

what is the quickest way to stop thin log slices from cracking ? Answered

I want to make and then sell various images printed onto log slices about 20 cm thick. I am happy with the printing method i have settled on but am aware that they do shrink and crack. I have ordered some polyethylene glycol but understand that i may have to soak the log slices for up to a week. Can anyone tell me if this is correct or have any other methods that i could try ?  Thank you for you help, Kevin...

How can I preserve animal organs for an open exhibit?

Hi all, I'm participating in an art exhibition and my project contains two animal organs, a pigs heart and kidney which will be lying on and in a bag of soil, and I'm looking for ways to preserve these parts to be displayed openly at room temperature. I've looked into DIY plastination and preserving them in alcohol etc but I was wondering if anyone had recommendations? Hopefully inexpensive as a bonus. If it seems impossible I've considered  having multiple organs, freezing them and rotating them after they begin to defrost but this seems a tad over elaborate. If anyone has any suggestions if really appreciate it! Thank you kindly, James

Does anyone know how to preserve meals like they do for Rat Packs/ MRE's? Answered

I am looking to go hiking for 10 days, but am not completely enthralled with my options for food. The rest of my team have either gone for the dried option or have gotten themselves Rat Packs. Dried is really boring, and the Rat Packs.... only about 2 of the menus are edible. I know that if I make the meals myself, they would taste a heck of a lot better. My problem is with preserving agents. So, if I wanted to make my own type of ready meal that could withstand 30 degrees C+ during the day, survive a 3 week boat trip and train journey before being used, how would i go about doing it?

What can I use to preserve food (e.g. banana peel) for use as a prop?

I am putting together a display and I need realistic-looking food props (slightly decayed). Ideally I'd like to use real food and coat it in something that will preserve it from further decay - similar to using formaldehyde on human or animal remains. Is this even possible with foods such as a banana peel? If so, what would be best? Thanks

How to preserve plaster of paris and avoid it breaking away? Answered

I'm making the Good Samaritan gun from Hellboy per the instructions on Indy Mogul. One of the parts of the gun, the barrel, (erm....where the bullets go), is made from plaster of paris. From experience, I've learned that this can break on its own eventually. Is there any way to avoid it weakening or breaking? Perhaps covering it with something?

Pelt curing: how to preserve the ears and feet of a hare or rabbit? Answered

Yesterday got a hare from roadkill. (It is stewing right now). I want to try to do an attempt at taxidermy. I got the pelt off intact, except the lower part of the legs, and I still have to do the head. I was thinking of just letting the legs dry: Quite tedious to take the skin off, and hardly any meat on it. Can I do this, and can I just let the ears dry?

How do you preserve bark on rustic wood projects.

We are building a fireplace mantle of oak milled from one of our trees 7 years ago.  We would like to leave the bark on the out facing side of our project.  Will epoxy suffice?  we bought a "pourable" type of coating like we have seen on some bar tops.  Will the bark fall off after a number of years?  It hasn't in 7 years in an unheated, somewhat damp barn.  Any help is appreciated.  Thank you!

How can I practice to restore and preserve old artwork? Answered

I have recently acquired a small (6"x 8") original oil painting that has been a family heirloom for a while now. As far as I can tell through research and artist signature validation, this piece is more than likely about a hundred years old. It is still in good shape but over the years has developed slight cracking in the paint in certain places and is yellowing from sunlight and smoke exposure from improper protection. While I don't intend on fixing these issues myself without the proper training (which is one of the main causes of the devaluation and ruining of fine art), after searching the internet for any restoration services nearby wear I live, there was virtually nothing available. It was also very hard to find even a few locations that even advertised such a thing. So, I am curious after all this, how does one practice for these sort of skills, short of going to school to study such a thing? I would hope they don't let lay people practice on valuable works of art when they are learning.

Building a virtual campus

Are there any tools for building a virtual "walk through" model of real places? I'd like to model a set of buildings, provide photos from specific places of the walls of those buildings, and have the tool generate all the intermediate views, but I'll settle for "You are HERE facing NSEW and this is what you see." The idea is to preserve a bunch of artwork that students have drawn on the walls of the local school, before it's torn down for renovation. I'm assuming that the assorted games with world editors aren't quite up to the resolution needed to preserve artwork; correct me if I'm wrong. (although, building a model of a real school in the UT world editors is liable to get one in trouble these days, anyway. Sigh.) Cheap would be good...
