Processors

I am thinking about upgrading my amd processor from a dual-core 2.0GHz to a quad-core 2.3 GHz processor and i was wondering if the AM2 socket that i already have will work with a AM2+ that the processor has.P.S. also, if there are any better deals that you know please comment

Which Processor?

Hello everyone. I'm new here and I have a quick question about processors. I'm working on a project that requires a device to take inputs piezo buzzer elements and trigger an LED. The catch is I need a programmable chip so I can have pre-set outputs on the LEDs. I'd need something that can be rewritten (like an EEPROM) I've been thinking abuot using a PIC or a BASIC Stamp but I'd though I'd do a bit of research first.

Finding Risc processors

Hi all, I've spent a great deal of time reading up on microprocessors so I can get involved with such an activity. However, I have found great difficulties in finding a high performance RISC processor. Being in the UK, I can only find one or two providers with a limited range of processors, and that isn't just RISC ones. I also get a little swamped looking at manufacturer's websites. It's very strange they all seem to boast an architecture with XYZ Mhz of max performance, but on their spec tables there is no processor with this maxed figure shown and a lot of entries /fields are empty making 99% of their processors unknown in spec. Highly annoy and useless. I'm not looking for anything special in regards to added features to the processor (I find most of it unnecessary and as a means to charge more money, apologizes for my ignorance in this;)), just a basic chip that can process a lot (thus higher Mhz) is all im after. lower power consumption are a great/big bonus for me though. If anyone can point me in the right direction, that would be great. I've found many processors (for example, arm cortex-a by sounds of things is perfect: Over 1ghz of performance. Only problem no one seems to be making them; to the public like us anyway. Looking for microcontrollers seems to be quite a difficult task, if anyone has resources, sites or retailer /suppliers (UK for me, but feel free to post other countries for other user's benefit) or anything that would help it would be appreciated. I dont want you to do my dirty work, just guide me in the right direction. On another subject, at least with arm processors I've read the speed rating (for example 500mhz), if you x3 it'll give the "real speed" due to that 3 phase of processing it does. making 500mhz more like <1.5ghz. of course, it isn't exactly x3, the point im making the processing performance is better due to the 3 phases. thank you for your time.

64 Bit Processors? Answered

Hiya! Well, looks like I got an old laptop, but the thing is.... it doesn't work. Dell Inspiron 8500/8600 series. It won't boot into Windows XP except in safe mode. Anyway, I was thinking of putting Ubuntu 10.10 on it and remaking it into an actually usable machine. Good idea, right?  Well.... the thing is I don't know much about these older processors, so my question is: Are any of these 64 bit processors? Or are they just 32 bit? Intel® Mobile Pentium® 4M Intel® Mobile Pentium® M I want to install the appropriate type of Ubuntu 10.10, 32 bit or 64 bit. Its just that the processor needs to be compatible... Thanks!

Printing scale for repurposed meter

I am doing a project to repurpose a Westinghouse KX-241 switchboard meter as a CPU process meter for my PC.  To to this I will have to make a new scale for the meter.  Here is the type of meter in question: http://www.allsbrookelectric.com/media/0e/a20792a12cc1c0e3dc7d2f_m.JPG The scale on the meter I have does not match the scale I need, which is 0 to 100 (percent).  This is a simple task: Just remove the scale from the meter, scan it, and modify the image as necessary with Corel Draw.  Then print the new scale on glossy paper and adhere it to the top of the meter scale.  Simple.  Except, if you notice in the picture, the scale of the meter is not all flat.  The outer edge of the scale where the lines are is angled outward.  If I try to apply a printed scale to this, the printed scale will have creases where the paper negotiates the angled portion.  Any ideas of how I can manage this without creases?

It's been six years since I first learned how to use microcontrollers (on this very site!) and I think I'm ready to delve into the wonderful world of ARM processors.  I've heard a ton of awesome things about them, including their reduced cost, high clock speed, usb connectivity, large memory, 32-bit cores, more I/O's, reprogrammable pin functionality, and some of them can even run linux! Unfortunately, I'm blind to the spectrum of arm.  What's a good MCU to dive into the sea of arms with, and why? Thanks I'bles! -muffin

How to solder 478 pin molex on the board?

Found an old board which has 478 molex broken. It is BGA so it is easy to remove old molex. I've found some new one on ebay for something like £4-£5, my question is how to solder new molex? http://pdf1.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/285247/MOLEX/51248-4792.html here you can see how it soldered originally. I understand that this requires special equipment, etc. but it would be nice to fix it as I have old 3.2 processor, therefore can make file server, etc. The one thing I thought is attach sew to the solder iron and solder each connection individually, which is would be time consuming and most probably very inaccurate due to hand shaking etc. Another thing is just "solder" processor directly on the bga, removing all pins and use hot air.Although it may be very "brittle". Any other way/ideas how to do this?

What is a process that can be run on a computer cluster that displays the time taken?

For my science project this year I need a process that can be run on a computer cluster and that displays how long it took to process. The time needs to remain fairly constant yet be accurate enough to display variations in processing power. For example, let’s say that there is a computer with 4 GHz of processing power. if i were to repeat the same process multiple times then the time taken would be something like 2346765.4567865676 seconds the first time and 2346765.4567865681 the second time, so it would only slightly vary each time. if the processing power would change to 3.95 GHz then the time would change to 2346765.45679 so that variations in the processing power would be evident in the time taken. These are just examples and the values have nothing to do with my actual project but i need something to process with these characteristics. Please ask if clarification is needed.

I need your help! Writers and bored people! Citizen Science: Pens vs. Computers!

I'm conducting a research, and I require all ye's cooperation in this! (Indeed, this is citizen science) If you would like to participate in this tiny research, then would ye lassies and lads care to follow the below instructions? I'll write a high school-level research paper on this once there's so much data, that I'd be swimming in the stuff. If you feel like you can't do it, please do smother the link around liberally, so that other people that can answer it, will answer it! Do your part for science! =========================== Directions: You will need the ff.: > a coin > pen/pencil and paper > a stopwatch of any sort > a word processor (a word count is useful) > an internet connection (for posting the results here, of course!) Then do this: 1) Flip a coin. If heads, you'll be using plain ol' pen-and-paper (well, you could use a pencil, too), but if tails, you'll be doing the WPM's on a word processor. 2) Choose one topic below: > A > My zombie apocalypse survival plan. > B > Windows vs. Linux vs. Mac; which is better and why. > C > Why Am I Even Writing This? (dump your thoughts here) > D > Why I like my favourite movie/novel/whateverart genre. 3) Get your stopwatch, start timing and start writing (in essay form) on your prescribed writing medium (see step 1). There is no time or word limit here, however it is better if something more substantial is to be written. 4) Once you feel that you've completed your thoughts on your written piece, stop the timer and count the number of words you've written. Record the two pieces of info somewhere (I need the time in hh:mm:ss format). . . WAIT: It is recommended that you do the above steps first before proceeding to read and fill out the form in step 5. If you read the form in step 5 first, you will jeopardize the information that the form in step 5 seeks. . . . SERIOUSLY: Do steps 1-4 first, then come back down here. This is science we're talking about here. Well, if you're done with them, then sure, you may pass. . . 5) Copy-paste and fill out the following form (i.e. everything in-between the pluses, including the pluses) and post it in this forum (and delete the stuff in brackets ("[ ]", "< >"), including the brackets themselves), and no, you don't need to post your essays here: ++++++++++ ==|| FORM START ||== Topic chosen: Writing medium: Word count: Time: a) Where do you prefer writing (paper or computer)? If mixed preference, elaborate. b) In what environment did you write in? [i.e. your room, library, outdoors (if indoors, indicate if there was any sun shining through any visible windows or if it was nighttime)] c) How cluttered was your working environment (how messy)? If you have any suggestions or inquiries (I really feel like I've missed something here), feel free to PM me about it! (I'd really much better prefer PM's over forum posts so as not to clutter up the semi-ultra-subjective data here). All data that is to be posted down here shall be considered open and free to anyone. If you would like to draw your own conclusions, then feel free to grab the data, but make sure to link (or cite) back here! ======================================= Also, despite intending to write a high school-level research paper on this, it's not actually for any research subject. I'm just really bored... and curious. Additionally, is this topic even in the right category? Oh, and belated Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to y'all!
