Product recognition?

Hey, I have a science fair coming up and had a really good thought, however I'm not sure how I would go about doing it... So the thought is a refrigerator with product recognition abilities. Basically there will be something with basic information under a product (bottles, cans, etc.) which maybe has the expiration date and the bar-code number (maybe just the bar-code number). So in the fridge, there will be a sensor of some kind to recognize the products. Then that will be transferred to a computer so it can display a list of the things inside the refrigerator. I have a good knowledge of Vb.net and basic knowledge of electronics (resistors, capacitors, transistors, SCRs etc.). I really have no idea for how this would work out, I know it's doable but not sure how.

H202 production

Wondering if any one have come across a video showing the steps or know how to do this and how to extract H2O2 form the solution to make hydrogen peroxide like discribed from wikipedia article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hydrogen_peroxide#Manufacture i know i just cut and pasted to make it easer the history  barium peroxide with nitric acid. An improved version of this process used hydrochloric acid, followed by sulfuric acid to precipitate the barium sulfate byproduct.  Sodium peroxide also makes H2O2 Na2O2 + 2 H2O → 2 NaOH + H2O2 those are hard to come by for DIY and thought maybe this would easier  inorganic processes were used, employing the electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sulfuric acid or acidic ammonium bisulfate (NH4HSO4), followed by hydrolysis of the peroxodisulfate ((SO4)2)2− that is formed. peroxodisulfate commonly referred to as the persulfate ion

Information on product design? Answered

Hello all!! I have something in mind that I want to build. I will try to market it and make money but my first point is to actually get it to work. It is a mechanical product, imagine it like a blender but twice the size. It will have motors, valves, wiring, and will need manufacturing. I have never designed something, so I was wondering whether there is a source that can help me with my product design. I am not looking for tips on how to sell my design, or how to make a minimalist interface, or make it beautiful. I am looking for help on purely mechanical design and tips for the product to work best. Some of the things i want to know are: 1. Which material should i use? Normal steel? Stainless? Galvanized? How thick a sheet metal? Plastic? Glass? 2. Which  material is easy to handle and cheap to manufacture? Which shapes can be made easily which shapes cannot. 3. What type of transparent material is cheapest and best? 4. What do i need to look out for in my product? Weight? Sharp edges? Hiding wires?  This is the type of information that I want. Practical things! Any information is appreciated!!! Point out any books, pdfs, slides, or sources please!  Thank you in advance, Chris

a useful safty product

I have an idea or two and wonder if there is someone who would like to make these ideas into products that can be sold or bought by a company that wants to corner the market.  first idea: a tool used by bicycle shops to help change tires on bikes.  second idea: a safe room for the worker of a jewlry store in the event of a robbery in progress. third idea: same idea as No. 2 but adapted for secure entry into a building when being threatened. fourth idea: a new adventure ride for disney.

products similar to the "chumby"

You may or may not have heard of the chumby. If you have not, it is a device that you place on a table that runs a variant of linux which updates different apps. E.g weather, blogs, news, internet radio etc... over a wireless b/g internet connection (it is pretty much an expensive touchscreen super alarm clock). Anyone know about any other devices like this?

Air fresheners: Simmer a small amount of cinnamon, orange peel, and cloves on the stove to give off a pleasant fragrance in your home. From Concept To Product

So the frame is 95% done -- the last bits are: 1. Fit into fairing (that top tube thing will be cut down significantly) 2. Powder Coat 3. Debug (we have more torsional flex than we want) But, it's a LOT of fun. You're butt is 7 inches off the ground. You can cruise at a pretty fast speed with relatively little effort (compared to an upright bike). And it is VERY comfortable. Just showing something coming up -- a video on this has been encoding since 11:30 last night, and it says it has 403 minutes remaining :P Feedback?

CLIENT NEEDED TO DESIGN A PRODUCT FOR

I am currently taking my DT A-level and as part of our final project we have been instructed to find a client with a product in need to be manufacture and designed and to do this for them, with them in the end being able to keep the final designed product, however they would need to fund the project. So I am looking into finding a client with a unique project, that uses multiple materials and processes for me to design and make for them, that would be willing to give me regularly updates and feedback into their views on the project so the final product will be what they wanted. If you believe this to be you please contact me and we can discuss it further!

product advertisements disguised as instructables

I have come across a number of  instructables by people or groups selling a product or pushing for support for a particular product under development. Fair game, if they try to help to do something, but instead they preface their "problem solution" with the need to buy such and such piece of equipment. I have no problem with this approach, but sure wish such instructables  would be identified as "promotional instructables."  or at least be identified  at the beginning of the instructable as showing how this specific product is the answer to an identified intractable problem.

Instructable disguised as a product advertisement? Answered

All the steps explain how to use the product after purchase... I may be wrong, but, why is that even allowed here? It was also featured in the last Instructables Email that I got.... I just don't get it. Here's the instructable Additional Note: It seems that almost (if not) all, the ibles by that author are showing how to use the same "product" in another way. Doesn't that just open the door to every marketing department out there to get free product advertising??? (Seriously, think about all the ible's with Fitz's giving yet another use for the smart chop...)

Product Designers & Engineers UK

Hi everyone! I’ve got a project underway and I’m at the stage of looking for product designers and engineers based in the UK, preferably in the South East. I’ve posted in the “Wanted” section of the forums as this wouldn’t initially be paid, more of a collaboration to start, with the goal of turning it into a realistic product/business. Looking for people who have an understanding of (what I believe would be) advanced PCB design, setting up basic SoCs, with a view for mass production. If anyone has any advice on where to find people with these skills, or knows anyone who would be interested, any help would be greatly appreciated! Kind regards, Mike

Bandsaw Mill for Lumber production

Factory made mills can cost 1000s of $. These mills can make great valuable lumber from what otherwise might be firewood. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQT4meL1L-Q This one seems to be an adaptation of an existing bandsaw. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kQT4meL1L-Q Several videos show machines with car or trailer tires. Although I've used bandsaws, belt sanders etc quite a bit, how they track the blade or belt remains a bit of a mystery to me. How can such mills be made at home? I found an -ible for a _CHAIN_saw mill, but I'm thinking of a BANDsaw mill.

BATFE Alcohol Production Permits

Ive looked around at alcohol-making stills, for my science project this year, and I found one. The only problem is that it requires a permit from the BATFE, and I don't know how to get one. I searched around for it on the net, but only found a bunch of PDF's, and they didn't help. Can somebody help me? Also, it involved comparing the flame burn time with gasoline, kerosene, and benzene on a fuel-burning lamp. What exactly do they mean fuel burning? Like alcohol burning? With a wick? And, is it safe to even use benzene? I thought it caused cancer. If I can avoid filling out a billion safety forms, I DEFINITELY will. If it helps, I got the project out of "the complete handbook of science fair projects", by julienne blair bochinski

Mass production and led's and arduinos?

I'm interested in making something that will have several led's that I would like to flash randomly and some flashing slowly, some fast, etc.. Some with the "fade in/ fade out" kinda deal (sorry, don't know the terminology). Anyway, I'm in the process of learning all about the arduino and I'm just beginning. What I would like to know is, say I figure out how to make these led's do what I need them to and I make up one "unit" and I put it all together etc.; will I have to buy and use an arduino for every single one of these? That would get very expensive. It's kinda like those pictures I've been seeing lately for Halloween/ fall/ Christmas that have led's flashing at different times, and some come on slowly, and then fade out slowly etc.. Or anything really maybe like those little rubber balls that have flashing led's in them. How do they accomplish this? Do each of those pictures have an arduino in them or is it a matter of "programming" some kind of cheaper "chip" and using it in each project? Like I said before, I don't know the terminololgy. Just looking for most economical way of accomplishing this on several different projects. Thanks so much for any help from anyone!!

I have seen some folks hawking their books for DIY Home Made Bio-Diesel.  Ok, it can be done but what do you do with the byproducts, i.e. the initial sluge produced when titrating the primary oil with lye, then washing the resulting oil with water to titrate out the soap?  It seems to me a lot of work and mess to deal with.

I want to make a spectrum analyser in product design and I have found all of the parts on rapid electronics (where my school buys things from). The total comes to about £150 (eek!) Custom Power Supply for Lemax Products

Curious if it would be possible to make a custom power supply for the Lemax Halloween town.  We end up with a tangle of wires every year, and I saw recently This on Amazon and thought it might work.  The only problem I run into is that the bigger Lemax products (houses and spot lights) use 4.5v where as the smaller figurines use 3v.  I've seen a lot of computer PSUs used for benchtop power supplies but none have a 3v or a 4.5v output.  I'm fairly competent with electronics, so I understand this might be more difficult than it's worth.

Anomalous Production of Ozone at a Catalyst Surface?

Anomalous Production of Ozone at a Catalyst Surface?   Hi, I'm kinda jumping in here, so I hope I'm not breaking forum rules . . . While experimenting some years ago, I produced ozone by accident and apparently by the action of an electrical current in a Pt/Ir alloy wire. I haven't been able to reproduce the effect due to a lack of resources, but I believe that it, if it *is* reproducible, might be an 'improved' method for the synthesis of ozone. I should say I *did* try to reproduce the effect but a lack of knowledge of the physics of the PGMs meant my efforts came to naught. But if there is someone out there  who is knowledgeable in the field of heterogeneous oxidation catalysis, I'd love to hear from them . . . Thank you
