What be the best programmer/development board for someone new?

I was wondering if anyone could point me in the right direction. I'm looking for a programmer/development board that your only limited to your knowledge and right now I don't have much, but will want to expand upon it without buying a whole new programmer/development board. So I'm also looking for something that will be easy to get started in also with tutorial to get you up and running. I don't want to start with something and be cut off and have to go out and buy something completely new and start all over again learning. What would anyone recommend for me and had experience in? Thanks for your help.

Arduino as an ISP Programmer???? No luck so far :(

Hi, I've owned an Arduino Duemilanove for a while, and I love its functionality and all that it can do. I also like to program chips(PIC, and AVR) as it is pretty much an Arduino in super miniature form. But theres one problem, I dont own a working PIC or AVR Programmer! I looked around online and the only low-priced ones I could find(<$20USD) were Serial(I only have 1 serial port, but It's being used by my monitor, which I kind of need to see what I'm programming...). I have plenty of USB ports, but the USB programmers are over my budget. I would love to make one(I'm more of a DIY person) but I've heard from a few sources that the FT232RL and MAX232(UART<->RS232 converters)  wont work for the application of programming(but theres one on the Arduino?!?!?), so I'm out of luck there. But then I put 2 and 2 together: Why not just use my Arduino as an AVR programmer? So I went online hoping to find a shield I could buy for cheap, or at least a schematic. And I got nothing. The only thing I found close is how to program an Arduino with another Arduino, but I only want to use an Attiny13, or Attiny2313; Not the big Atmegaxxx. So now my question I present to you: How can I program an Attiny13/2313 with an Arduino, preferably(but not requiredly, anything really) with the ArduinoISP sketch included with the arduino IDE?

Arduino Nano as ISP Programmer?

I was excited to find out that an arduino could be used as an ISP programmer. But when I found out that the arduino uno does not support this feature, my dreams were crushed. I did recently buy an arduino nano and was wondering if I could use this as an ISP programmer. Any thoughts? Thanks for the help!

I Need a Game Design Team (Mobile Game Development)

Hey guys, I am looking for a game design team to help out with a project I am starting.  It will be a mobile game similar to Clash of Clans, but with many different gameplay changes.  I have a lot of the game planned out, but I don't want to have to learn all of the different skills it would take to make the game on my own.  I have some 3D modelling skills with blender, and will also do most of the gameplay design. People I Need: -Another 3D modeler to work with and help reduce the workload -A texturer -A programmer with the skill to put a mobile game together -An animator -An artist (for main map, interface, etc) -Possibly someone for sound; I can probably do that I would assume that the game will be created in Unity, but that mainly depends on the group's preferences.  If the programmer has the skill, he could just custom code the game, and it would definitely run better that way.  Anyways, whatever money is made from this project will be split equally between everyone except for the programmer; I know how much work that would take, he will probably get a little bit larger of the share. Reply with your email and I will send you the basic outline of the game. -Josh PS: Please, only native English speaking people; I've worked with non-natives, and I have found communication to be very tedious...

PicProgrammer

Does anybody know of a schematic to program an 8 pin picmicro controller such as: 12F675 12F508 Just those specifically because they're 8 pin and I have them. Correct me if I'm wrong, but one of those 2 has 8 I/O ports, which leads to a lot of possiblities for a small area. Also this will be my first real pic project.

Would like to see... a USB LED, which can be programmed to light up ...based on some 'event' such as new email, or whatever software triggers can be programmed, to turn the light on/off.  Even better, if there was a means to use different colors... or blink rates.

Arduino Help

Help with programming a PIC16f877A with Pickit2

I am having a really hard time programming a PIC16f877A with a Pickit2 programmer or a homemade serial programmer. I have tried several ICSP interface circuits but neither programmer can read the microcontroller.  I have been able to program other PICs with each programmer without any problems. I am beginning to think that I just have a bad chip. Does anyone have experience using Pickit2? A step by step breakdown would be extremely helpful.  Can anyone suggest a good interface for the PIC16f877A? I have tried connecting the pins directly to the programmer. I have also tried using pullup resistors on MCLR, and used a schematic for ICSP that I found on the Microchip website.  One thing I have yet to try is powering the chip with an external power supply, Would this method work?

Can you still write programmes for PC in assembly language?

Is it still possible to write programmes that will run on a normal PC in .asm ? I've had a look around, and the little information avialable seems to only be relevant to pre-1990 PC's running MS-DOS. Does anyone know of any sites with more up to date information for the processors/instruction sets in use, or what assemblers and linkers are available? Any help would be appreciated.

Ghetto programmer and 16Mhz

First off, Hello everyone. I built the ghetto parallel port programmer, adjusting the pinouts to work with a attiny26 and it works flawlessly.Kudos to the author. My problem is that when I drop in an external crystal rated at 16Mhz I avrdude quits because of a faulty signature; I assume this means the timings are off.At firs I thought I had misconfigured the fuses, but ,thankfully, when I dropped an 8Mhz crystal in it worked again. I know this uC can be clocked this high, so what's the problem? thanks

Programmable inline switch (or, how to help your houseguests turn off the lights)?

So, after battling with houseguest after houseguest, I've hit my end. Beyond giving them flashlights and nothing more, is there a way to build an inline timer that can be variably set? Something to sit between the switch and light, and I can set it to 10 minutes for some, 20 for others, and always on?

How do I reprogram a non reprogrammable fan?

I just got one of those light up fans that display letters while they spin, and it says on the box that it was programmable, but it seems it was only programmable by the person assembling it, because there is no way to change the letters that I can see. I was just wondering if anyone knew how to open it up and reprogram what it says.

Coding Showdown - Programmers and Hackers, beware.

Just: Go to (edit: page no longer exists. too late!), and - by any means - acquire my password. Ehhem. The winner might get something. Edit: I changed the password, due to a mistake on my part where it actually told you the password.

Calling All Programmers (Yes, ALL)

Every now and then in typing class, our teacher will give us a handful of letters, and we're given about 5 minutes to come up with as many words as we can from these letters. So today I thought... what if there was a program where you could input a string of letters, and it would spit out as many words as possible that can be made out of those letters. A quick Google search was less than fruitful. So, to the more techier of my fellow Iblians, how would you go about writing a program that could do this? I'm thinking something where you input a string of letters, and then it scans, say, an online dictionary, to find as many words as possible from the inputted letters. Sound doable?

JDM Programmer won't work with 8 pin chips

I bought a JDM programmer from ebay. It has slots for 8 pin, 18 pin and 28 pin chips. It's not a professional model, it's probably home made. When I use Winpic800 in Windows XP SP3 it is able to successfully read and write to both the 18 and 28 pin chips without a problem, but not with 8 pin chips. They're not automatically detected like the other chips nor can they be read of programmed properly. I think it might be due to power , but I'm on a desktop PC, so I don't think it's providing less power than required, plus why would 18 and 28 pin chips work all right. It could be the programmer, but all the connections appear sound, plus the thing came with some smart cards that already contained pre-programmed chips, including two 8 pin chips, so you'd think that it must've worked at some point. As it stands I haven't got a clue what I'm doing wrong and I would really appreciate help with this. Thanks :)

Global Warming - Ruling on Documentary

UK Broadcasting watchdog OfCom has ruled that the Channel 4 documentary The Great Global Warming Swindle broke broadcasting rules by implying that GW was not due to human activity. The film's key contentions were that the increase in atmospheric temperatures observed since the 1970s was not primarily caused by emissions of greenhouse gases from burning fossil fuels, and that the modern focus on climate change is based in politics rather than science. It is seen in some "climate sceptic" circles as a counter to Al Gore's movie An Inconvenient Truth, and credited with influencing public perception of climate science. It has reportedly been sold to 21 countries and distributed on DVD. GW experts featured in the documentary complained that they were quoted out of context, had not been told of the aims of the programme makers, and some quotes attributed to experts were, allegedly, made up by the reporters."It's very disappointing that Ofcom hasn't come up with a stronger statement about being misled," said Sir John Houghton, a former head of the UK Met Office and chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) scientific assessment. "I know hundreds of people, literally hundreds, who were misled by it - they saw it, it was a well-produced programme and they imagined it had some truth behind it, so they were misled and it seems Ofcom didn't care about that," he told BBC News."The programme has been let off the hook on a highly questionable technicality," said Bob Ward, former head of media at the Royal Society, who played a prominent role in co-ordinating objections to the film. "The ruling noted that Channel 4 had admitted errors in the graphs and data used in the programme, yet decided that this did not cause harm or offence to the audience." Plaintiffs accused the programme of containing myriad factual inaccuracies, but Ofcom says it was "impractical and inappropriate for it to examine in detail all of the multifarious alleged examples... set out in the complaints." On another issue - whether contributors to the programme had been treated fairly - Ofcom mainly found against Channel 4 and the film's producer WagTV. Former UK chief scientific adviser Sir David King had been misquoted and had not been given a chance to put his case, the regulator said. Ofcom also found in favour of Carl Wunsch, an oceanographer interviewed for the programme, who said he had been invited to take part in a programme that would "discuss in a balanced way the complicated elements of understanding of climate change", but which turned out to be "an out-and-out propaganda piece, in which there is not even a gesture toward balance". The film alleged that the IPCC's scientific reports were driven by politics rather than science, and Ofcom ruled the organisation had not been given adequate time to respond. I've been looking for hours, and all I can find is information on building a programmer for AVR microcontrollers. I already did that! This is the only thing that there seems to be nothing about on the internet.

Advice on microcontrollers

Hey everyone. Long-time member of the site, but just now starting to get into microcontrollers. Looking for some help on choosing a good, easy line of microcontrollers/programmer (easy to use without sacrificing too much function) which would be good for someone new to microcontrollers. Would the ATTiny line of microcontrollers be any good, or would pic be better? Oh, I'm also a university student so cost of the microcontroller/programmer is something I'd like to keep low (if possible). Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me. Either respond here or send me a private message ... Thanks again :)

Battery Powered Programmable LED Sign

Hi all! I am working on building a sign to hold up at a concert I'm going to in a couple months, and I really want it to stand out!  To preface: I am very technically inclined but know very little about powering LEDs (have only done basic diode and battery combos) and have zero programming experience, but am a quick study.  What I am looking for is a solution that can be mounted on a 20x30" corrugated plastic panel, and run via battery pack with enough juice to last a 4+ hour concert. I know that one can easily buy battery powered LED strips, which I'd mount in an array on the plastic, but I'd really like to ideally be able to control the lights colors and show different bits of text, possibly via an iOS app.  I know this might sound quite ambitious but as my dad always likes to say, go big or go home! Anyone have any ideas where I can get started? Thanks in advance :)
