Propellant Type

Would making lifting powder packing it in ur engine tube and then letting it dry produce more or less thrust than black powder? Also everyody says dont use pvc for engine tubes and this baffles me because ive always use it and ive never had a problem infact ive found it to work better i always seem to split cardboard could sombody explain to me why i shouldn't use pvc? And third what is a good way of getting two or more engines to fire at the same time as i have a 7.5 foot rocket that i don't feel like packing an engine the size of a bottle for again.

whirligig propeller hub ?

I have started to try my hand at making whirligigs, but always run into problems when making the hubs for the propellers. Does anyone have any ideas? I had a pdf file on how to make a jig for them. but I do not have a table saw.

Magnetically Propelled Bicycle

I was told that I should make a forum topic out of this. So here it is:Here is a link to my upublished instructable:Magnetically Propelled BicycleI came up with this two weeks ago while I was day dreaming about levitation and magnets.The idea is that one stationary magnet set up on the middle of a bicycle negative facing front, can push two magnets bolted together, each facing negative, with an axle running through them and wheels on opposite sides. So when the stationary magnet'ss power is increased, the two magnets in front will be pushed, thus rotating the axle where the wheels are attached, adn obviously the wheels are turned.I say "when the power is increased" because hopefully an electro magnet can be used. I am not sure, but I think an electromagnet can be hooked up to a car battery, and then with some control device, more electricity can be sent to the magnet, possibly increasing the power ( I don't know much about this stuff so help me out here.Look at the schematics for all of the anatomy.I have not figured the turning system out completely, in the intro picture you may see that the turning wheel is connected to the rear by a bar ( In the way I believe it may work there will be two bars side by side, I can't really explain it yet). That is how I plan the turning to the controlled.If you have any ideas for this project, add a comment. I have not made this yet and am still creating it.Please, do not steal my idea, I am only 14 and just started inventing. I have no idea how the patenting system works and I do not have the money for it.I would also like to know more about electromagnets, how they work and where to buy them. I saw one site where the best electromagnet can "pull" like 1300 pounds, so this thing should go pretty fast if it is built properly. I reallly want to know if it is possible for electromagnets to push, that is the whole Idea for this. But if they can't, I've already drawn a simple schematic for pulling the wheels which is on the next page.I also want to add that the stationary magnet cannot be level with the rotating magnets, it will have to be a little above, and if you add a mechanism where the stationary magnet can move up and down, you can control the bike forwards and backwards.Hopefully, no one has a patent on this ( I've searched and haven't found one). And hopefully this will replace fossil fuel vehicles, although I doubt the government will allow that. THE WHEELS/ROTATING MAGNET IS NOT ATTACHED TO THE BICYCLE. Can ducted propeller produce twice lift compared to opened propeller ? for example if there is an opened propeller with low rpm producing some amount of lift. If we ducted that opened propeller and provide same rpm and power as opened propeller to it will it produce twice lift compared to opened propeller with same rpm and power ?

Motor/propeller selection for quadcopter

Hello Instructables! We are a team of engineering students that want to get started in the world of multirotors. Our objective is to build a long endurance/high payload quadcopter for industrial applications, and we plan to innovate in the power system area. So, without further ado here's our first problem. I've searched the internet for a while now and I've struggled to find information on how to choose an appropiate motor-propeller combination. I know the total maximun thrust should be a bit more than two times the the total weight but motor and propeller manufacturers rarely list the "thrust per rpm" of their props. Our initial estimation for the quadcopter's total weight is 3,3 kg. considering 200 g for each motor. I did manage to find this static thrust calculator but I have no idea how reliable it is since it doesn't say how the thrust is calculated. ( So that's about it. Any help would be greatly apreciated, no matter how small. It can be advice, information sources, or even builds that are similar to what we want to make and have already been tested. Need some understanding of propeller design?

I need some help in understanding the science behind aqua propeller designs.  For example what is the difference between modern outboard motor propeller vs. what they used in steam boats.  To me the steam boat design looks pretty good.  After all it displaces more water.   I would appreciate the help.

Please can someone help me make a propeller for my boats! I, ideally, want a just prop system, but dont mind a paddle (padd) and prop system. The motors used have to be one of the following: A grey, large, two direction two speed (4x AA), x2 max A blue two direction (2xAA) x2 max A Spring motor (No Batteries) x2 max. I also have a gearbox (90 degree Direction change, not speed change). PLEASE HELP!! I can use all of these motors together if neccisary. Thanks!!

um, hi, what should i do with this?

Ok, so, i just made a plastic bottle 4-fin propeller and used a pencil for its axle, but i want to make a tiny boat with it, and i don know how! i need to figure out how to make, the body of the boat, the wind-up mechanism, and i need to know what materials i should use and how to waterproof it. any suggestions r welcome. small solar panel, motor and propeller

I have constructed a desktop solar helicopter that I have on  I am trying to make a small very light solar helicopter that I can fly on the desktop and is tethered on 4 corners. Propeller name problem?

I'm looking for a small (2 inch) propeller for a toy, but all the sizings are like 4x6, or 6x8 etc. What do these 2 numbers mean. Also some propellers say EP-____ what does this mean and finally most say 120mm x 110mm, (example) but no way do these mean that the propellers are almost square. Thank you

Quadropropellor concept

Last night I had this dream about a bizarre helicopter that used a simple but unique form of a propeller.  Conceptually, I see no reason why it should not work... but I'm not sure if it would be any better or more efficient than a typical propeller.  The idea is that the geared propellers rotate at the tips of the main rotor as it spins.  The outside ring is fixed such that as the central propeller spins, each of the out side disc spin creating lift from both the central propeller as well as each of the four outside propellers.  Because the geared wheels will spin faster than the central rotor, theoretically it might produce more lift than a single propeller (maybe).  I would like to hear other people's thoughts on the concept.  If someone has a 3D printer, it should be relatively simple to make and test.

Well, I just thought I would let you guys know about Project Euphoria. It is the first, that I am aware of, knex propeller driven boat-If there is one, please please PLEASE, correct me. I hate making False claims. It is a grey trekker motor, driving two counter-rotating two-bladed screw propellers. How to let something spin in water without moving ? Answered

Ok, first ill explain what I have built, and excuse me if it already exists, I can't even think of how to google/name it. A can floats in water, there is a candle in the can. On top of the can there is a propeller which is stuck to the can. The hot air rises and lets the fan (and therefore the whole can) spin. The power is very little and the can tends to move to a side of the bowl and that friction stops it. Is there a balance problem ? Is the not perfect propeller working like a sail and therefore pushing it to the side ? What could I do to let the can stay perfectly in the middle while spinning ? Thanks in advance.

If the intake turbines' speed is regulated by the compressed exhaust over the rear turbines, would it be more effecent to have 2 props in a row, or a single large one at the rear of the engine to control the rotation speed?

How to make a magnetically powered/propelled vehicle ?

I'm a freshman in high school doing a Year End Project (YEP) for STEM. My project is a vehicle that is propelled by electromagnetism. I have three main idea's already. Option 1: Completely replace wheels with large magnets with either a North or South charge. Then replace normal roads with railings charged with magnetism of the same polar to the cars. The bumpers could be magnetically charged as well. With all car bumpers being the same polar, it would decrease the chances of accidents. Take into account that this idea has only started growing for the past 2 years so my ideas for the mechanics are not close to completion so I'm leaving those thoughts out. Option 2: keep the wheels but modify them to have 2-3 smaller magnets on the inside of the wheel. By turning and switching on different a polar changing direction between forwards and backwards. Then add the same idea with the bumpers for the same reason. This cuts the cost exponentially. Option 3: Keep the wheels and everything else of a normal automobile except the engine. Replace it with on large magnet that's stationary and a smaller magnet that can rotate or switch between North and South polar's. Possibly instead of only one pair of magnets increase to an unknown number to allow for more speed, braking and acceleration power. Still keep with the bumper idea. I can't seem to find a reason other than cost to get rid of it. Of course the magnets would interfere with electronics. I haven't thought of a solution for that problem as of yet.

Can two electric trolling motors with different propellers and maximum RPMs be used effectively on the same boat? Answered

I am building a solar powered electric boat. I want to use more than one motor on the transom. I was wondering if using two motors with different maximum RPM, power, and propeller shapes was possible? Would the propeller of the less powerful motor just add drag or would it add power? Obviously this isn't very specific, but I'm really looking for an explanation or proof of concept. Thanks very much in advance community!

I saw crazybuilders instructable on making a propeller driven skateboard, and that inspired me to make a prop driven gocart. I have also recently become interested in steampunk and I thought it would be awesome to use a small steam engine to power it. This is where it gets difficult. Could anyone recommend a steam engine powerful enough to drive two propellers fast enough to move me? (I weigh about 50 kilos)

What would be a good material for creating a custom vertically oriented wind turbine blades?

For a school project my group an I are building a vertically oriented wind turbine  similar in orientation to the one in the link( We would like to build a few different designs to test which will give us the best efficiency as we will do using it to generate maximum output voltage. I'm wondering, what would be a good way to create these different custom pieces, especially the curved airfoil shapes we may wish to utilize in the design? Thanks!

Would different angles on blades of propeller reduce Speed? Answered

The goal is to reduce speed of my Egg drop contraption but still spinning to keep it accurate.? Basicly its this. 8 blades on a octagon frame then String and then my shock absorbing egg carrier. What way would I want to set my Blades so that it doesn't speed through the air?

Surface tension propels tiny boat without sails or moving parts

From the New Scientist:WATCHING Sung Kwon Cho's model boat glide silently across the still water with no propellers or sails, you'd be forgiven for thinking a phantom hand was drawing the vessel forward. The boat is actually being driven by water surface tension, the same force that allows some insects to skate across the surface of a pond.The design is inspired by Pyrrhalta beetle larvae, which also use surface tension to propel themselves. Since it requires no moving parts, the method should be more robust than those involving propellers and may use just a hundredth of the power.Another story on the NetworkWorld site (with a few skeptical comments.)Doesn't look too difficult to replicate, does it?

How big a propeller would I need to turn a 3500 watt AC gererator?

A friend of mine gave me a 3500 watt gasoline AC generator because he burnt the engine and he did not want to fix it due to cost. I want to use a propeller instead of a gas engine to make it operational. Is this practical? The wind here blows constantly between 20 and 30 mph.

Need some input on boat propulsion

Can someone help me out with some ballpark calculation of propulsion power needed to move a boat? I do have some specific questions: 1. Propeller vs. Jet: Which one will deliver more propulsion given the same amount of power. 2. If it is typical electrical trolling motor type propeller, is there some simple formula to represent relationship of boat speed, power needed (hp), propeller rotation speed, and diameter of the propeller? 3. If it is a jet: Is there a simple formula to represent relationship of boat speed, power needed (hp), boat speed, and GPF of water to move the boat. I know that I am missing a few variables here like boat's weight and its water displacement.  I am trying to keep it simple. Any thoughts and input will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Experiment on whether and when a stuck up fan will break into flame.

Let us consider a typical home electric fan, and we put some obstacle to prevent the fan propeller from turning, then we switch on the fan on the fastest speed; will the fan and when eventually break into flame because the propeller cannot rotate? How to build a super-thrust blower out of electric blowers to drive a paraglider ?

I want to build a paramotor which is electric and not propeller driven. Therefore, I want 'hand dryer' type blowing technology to provide sufficient thrust. Does anyone know if large super blowers are available in portable electric form ? Could this work ? How much thrust does the propeller create ?
