Why do some quotation symbols in the text of an Instructable sometimes display as the """ HTML tag? I'm using Mac OS X and the font is Arial.

Why are the special characters in my Instructional changing to some form of computer code?

Here's what you do: post a random quote from absolutely anything, but do not say where its from. See if anyone else knows where it is from. If you see a quote that you know, tell whoever posted it! Try these: "Do thou amend thy face, and I'll amend my life" "Fool, you know better than to pick up a duck in a dungeon!" "The maple- kind, ya." "That was nothing like the ride at Disney World!" "I'm the best at what I do, and what I do best isn't very nice,"

Now some famous qotes that hundreds of people know are from the Star Wars Saga, like "You underestimate the power of the Dark Side" and "Size matters not" and more. My Favorite is probably the most famous Star Wars quote of them all, "No Luke, I am your father", its also a famous plot twist, so whats your favorite Star Wars quote?

Does anyone know where the quote from the Combichrist song Shrunken Heads For All Occasions comes from? If you haven't heard the song, there is a voice saying "Now, shrunken heads for all occasions, collect 'em, swap 'em, give 'em to your witchdoctor friends". I've tried searching for it, but with no luck whatsoever.

If I want text in an instructable to include characters that normally cause wiki formating magic to happen, how do I quote them ? For instance, if I want to enclose some text in square brackets:[my text](that was done with "preformatted" text. which changes the font and does a "block" at a time. Not what I want!)(couldn't find this in other pages about wiki formatting, either.)

What are your favorite sayings? Mine are: "One can never know for sure what a deserted area looks like." - George Carlin. "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education." - Mark Twain. "One tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor." - Steven Wright. "It is better to keep your mouth closed and let people think you are a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." - Mark Twain. And last but not least, "Tomorrow's another big day!" - Calvin's mom. Comment with your own!

I've noticed that when I put something in quotes, in a step instruction for example, the previewed and published text will have substitution of nonsense characters. I've noticed this on other instructibles by other authors, so it's not just mine. But, is this my computer, the browser (Firefox), or the Instructibles website programming? Has anyone else noticed this? Hope this helps.

This probably would require substantial rewriting of the comment-handling software, but I might as well toss it out for discussion. Could the "Reply" feature for PM, topics, and I'bles comments have the ability to optionally do formatted quoting? I have in mind the classic Usenet and e-mail system: Joe L. User wrote: > Jane Newbie wrote: >> GodOfVMS wrote: >>> Why do we need lowercase commands? >> i like lowercase; it reminds me of e.e. cummings. What's a command? > CAN SOMEBODY HELP ME GET MY CAPS LOCK KEY UNSTUCK?????? Sure! On the front of your computer, find the button with a circle and line, (|). Press it.With long postings, or when you're replying to multiple comments someone has made, being able to interlace what they said with what you're writing can be very convenient. Some people (Kiteman especially) do this by hand, applying boldface or italic markup to distinguish the layers of markup. I try to do it in a more narrative way, e.g., On Sep 16, 2008, you wrote, "Some stupid newbie announcement." Did you really mean to say that, or were you doing a self-colonoscopy?I wonder if formatted quoting could be done automatically by the backend?

In a posting to NachoMahma's Text-Formatting FAQ, I remarked on a bug in the way hyperlinks (bracketed text) are rendered. The bug involves enclosing a hyperlink (valid or not) between punctuation characters, for example "[a-quoted-link]" or ([parenthetical-link]): "[a-quoted-link]" ([parenthetical-link])In both cases, the leading punctuation character, adjacent to the left bracket, is moved to the end of the link, instead of being preserved at the beginning.

Hi, I've been recently working on a batch file program that can multitask, and open and close various programs on command. Currently, the main interface file is called "DBat"(without the quotes, and its a batch, so I guess its really DBat.bat). The folder it is in is on my Desktop, and called "DBat"(no quotes) I would like to make it so that when I open the folder, it automatically runs DBat. How would I do this? To explain it clearer: I open the DBat folder DBat.bat runs Anyone know how I should go about this?

. When a search string is entered and the Search button is clicked, the search string disappears when the results are displayed. . . Edit: Problem appears to be caused by quotes in the search string, eg: "Subscribers: 35..2000"

Really digging this poster about failing and moving on to failing better. It's from a quote by Samuel Beckett and it's letterpressed onto recycled paper. Still trying to decide if it's worth the $46 to have it shipped to the US and then a little more to have it framed. Hmm. Fail Better Poster

Quote: "I've promised Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall the brains to cook with." Question 1 (just for fun) Who said this and what were they talking about? Question 2 (topic reason) Does anyone have any good recipes for brains. I believe calf-brains are popular in some parts of the US(?)

I suggest that all articles be modified on November 9th to insert the instruction "Create the universe" as step 1 to pay tribute to Carl Sagan. The quote can be found in this song/video:

Television show "Friday night live" whom features internet clips, tonight played a small snippet in which they tried KipKay's advise and managed to chill their coke's in the said time frame. They played the whole clip, including his fridge obsessed cat.Not all that exciting, yet was interesting to see someone of the DIY community make TV here. Now if only he was to do an I'ble on it."Have you ever forgotten to stock your fridge."It's like pure poetry.Videoinvalid movie: http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=dc9BHiQUpWUSorry for the picture quality. Only had time to grab the phone to take them.KipKays, Chill a coke in 2 minutes. If the vid didn't embed properly, here's the link.

Hi. It's about how are organized threads into forums. Currently forum threads are forked : you can reply to a comment separately, and each of your reply will make a new fork if somebody reply to your new comment ... this makes threads like trees ... Personally, I don't find this system very handy, more particularly when the same thing is being actively discussed in several forks. This system is good for short chats and when commenting instructables, but when it's about debating, it quickly becomes confusing ... For the forums, I'd prefer a system with a linear thread where messages are ordered according to time, and where we have to quote the persons we want to reply to. Several discussion could get "multiplexed" on the same thread, but personally, I find that less confusing as long as there are quotes. What's your preference ?

When I take a holiday in Wales we always listen to "The Smurfs" (Father Abraham in Smurfland) - it's a tradition. Hence the phrase "The Smurfs have finished" meaning "Someone change the record". If you've not been exposed to this yet, see here: Then there's "Smurfing beer" - quote: "you don't get drunk and it isn't dear" (It isn't beer) www.youtube.com/watch The Pinoccio song questions - quote "Pinoccio, Pinoccio, why are you made of wood?" www.youtube.com/watch The annoying but up-beat Dippety-Do song: www.youtube.com/watch Looking at the album cover I wonder exactly what happens when the floating-head of Father Abraham appears in Smurfland - do they panic and start singing lest he smite them? (Notice the bad image job where the top of a mushroom-house has been cropped off on the right)

Hello there, When I check my IR light emitters, they are giving a different voltage, 3.5mV and 0.8mV. Do they need to be giving a similar value for the eyes to function properly? Also these values are much lower than the 0.6V quoted in the instructions. Any advive would be much appreciated.

I have joined several forums recently, and was wondering about the "tricks of the trade". How do I upload pictures? Videos? How about links? And what about quoting people? How does that work? Bold, italicized, and underlined words? I'd appreciate it if anyone could help.

Hello, I'd like to connect an arduino with mcp2515 with my Volkswagen Golf 6, in order to look whats going on in the CAN Bus network :) This is the MCP2515 breakout is used (chinese clone): Therefore I used this script:[ https://github.com/coryjfowler/MCP_CAN_lib/blob/master/examples/CAN_receive/CAN_receive.ino I did the wiring like this one After uploading the source code to my arduino nano, I got the following message:
Entering Configuration Mode Successful! Setting Baudrate Successful! MCP2515 Initialized Successfully! MCP2515 Library Receive Example...
I think everything should be fine. But I didn't see any canbus message there. Which steps do I have to take, to see any message on the CAN Bus. Whats the setting for can bus communication (baud rate, oscillator mhz...)? Thanks in advance BR, Julian

This is probably just a temporary database glitch, but I thought I'd get it documented. I tried to access Eric's "How do you like the new editor?" forum topic just now (7 Oct 2009 10:30 AM PDT), and got the error message quoted in the title.

Today was the first time i wanted to comment, but found myself confronted with this: "We have a "be nice" comment policy. Please be positive and constructive with your comments or risk being banned from our site." In my personal opinion, constructive comments are rarely positive and positive comments tend to be rather useless. Who thought the statment quoted above is a good idea and can it be changed?

"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete."-Buckminster FullerThis is such a great quote- that's what we always strive to do. Everyone who makes, builds, or creates should probably adopt this as their motto, because such paradigm shifts are the only real way to change the world. Oh, and Buckminster Fuller is totally awesome.

Is there anywhere we can buy Instructables stickers? I know the old Yahoo store had them available, but that's gone now and there's only links to the spreadshirt store... which only does shirts. To quote Kiteman: You have stickers. We want stickers. GIVE STICKERS!https://www.instructables.com/community/Instructables-stickers/https://www.instructables.com/community/Instructables-Now-Has-a-Store/TIA. =)

So basically I want a very simple device which is just a little buzzer and either some kind of laser sensor or even bits of string. I want something that can be worn that makes a noise when the wear slips out of good posture. I am sure this could be easily done. All quotes will be received and considered.

. WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. doctors have found the Bee Gees 1977 disco anthem "Stayin' Alive" provides an ideal beat to follow while performing chest compressions as part of CPR on a heart attack victim.. Disco tune "Stayin' Alive" could save your life at Reuters. Edit: Added quote (OP was just a link) to avoid being chastised by gmjhowe. ;)

The following is a quote of the post I've just left on the aforementioned Instructable (https://www.instructables.com/id/One-Person-Submersible-from-a-Plastic-Drum/?&sort;=NEWEST&limit;=40&offset;=40). I would really appreciate the removal of this instructable. "Hi. I am a certified OSHA and CSAO commercial diver air dive supervisor, level 1, and qualified Master Scuba Diver Trainer with the Professional Association of Diving Instructors. This is a very dangerous idea. You might not die, but someone else might/will/and has. Just because there is a disclaimer there, you and Instructables will be subject to litigation. There is a reason that people need a certification to operate this type of life support equipment. http://scuba-doc.com/ageprbs.html "Because of Boyle's law, maximal changes in volume occur in the 4 feet (1.22 m.) closest to the surface and the diver sustains a tear in the pulmonary parenchyma with the escape of air into the pulmonary venous outflow." I can quote other resources, such as the US Navy Dive Manual and the DCIM manual, but it's Boyle's Law, not Boyle's "kinda' might happen. I don't know". "

I am trying to find an online supplier of custom metal or plastic parts. I built a nixie clock and would like a custom machined metal case for it. I know I've seen places online that you can send CAD drawings and specify the material and they will custom make the part. I'm pretty sure I've run across a site that uses software that will give you a quote right away. I can't remember any of the names of the sites and recently lost my bookmarks please help!

A picture says a thousand words (to quote millions of other people :)) So the problem is is that in Internet explorer 8, when you go to edit your instructable (excuse my sad little attempt at an 'ible in the background, I wanted to try out the editor) The whole editor is greyed out, and a loading bar is displayed indefinitly (2 hours in) I have tryed reloading the page, and it is still greyed out. The obvious soulution would be to upgrade to Chrome or Firefox <3, but that is not possible :(

I am a junior high math and shop/technology teacher. For years I have been wanting to develop a math program that uses as much hands on as possible. Like all teachers, I have developed a few projects, but just don't have the time to develop all the activities needed to cover an entire curriculum. I would love to correspond/collaborate with others (including non teachers). Email me directly if you are interested. firstname.lastname@example.org
