Rats

Has anyone out there ever managed to make a rat proof/squirrel proof bird feeder or know of a commercial one that works please?I love birds but not rats!My wife will not let me shoot the rats with my Webley .22 air pistol! At the moment I'm nearly rat free by only putting round suet balls in the feeder; as soon as I put seed in the feeder they're back. I've managed to stop the rats coming down the wire (amazing agility) by having a domed lid half way down the wire that when they try and stand on the lid it just tips and they fall off.I've seen various gadgets to try to solve this problem but all of them failed in my garden.I've done the usual things like making sure I keep the area clean below the wire feeder.I've tried having a tray underneath to catch the bits when Tits have fed from the feeder and husks fall to the floor - the rats leap from the bushes onto to the tray making it tip all of its debris onto the floor. I've tried hanging it in the most remote place - 6 rats turn up doing a war dance underneath it waiting for droppings to fall down!Anyone got any suggestions pleaseDennis

Don't keep rats as pet !

When my brother decided to travel around the country, he has been forced to leave the white rat he kept as pet ... and I've been forced to adopt this little animal.Rats as pets quickly become cute, funny, and show a personality that make them even more endearing ... In other words, "la souris" (the mouse), as I renamed it because I was unable to remember the name my bro gave her formerly, quickly found her place in my home and my life. So, happy end ??No !No, because rats pets quickly develop lot of weird diseases :- dermatitis - mange- bumble feet- cysts- tumors- etc- and various infections and self-injuries because the rat scratches or bites itself because of one or several of the above diseases. The health and the life of your rat will quickly become a nightmare, and, if like me, you tend to consider your pets like full members of your family, your rat pet will become a great source of worries ... and if you're not cruel, you'll be forced to give an end to its agony. Because that's a real slow and cruel agony. Most people who adopt a rat as pet seems not to be aware of all the problems this little animal will have, neither how expensive it will be to look after it.The internet is full of sites dedicated to the diseases of rats pet. My advice : If you love pets, don't adopt or give a rat as pet !20080225 update :Despite what I said, if you still want to adopt a rat, then, you should better document yourself a lot before commitment.Member Please wrote a tiny instructable about How to take care of a rat the right way. She is a breeder, so you could ask her as much questions as you need.20080226 update :She also wrote two other very useful articles :avoid bad diseases for your pet ratfun games for your pet rat

Rat Brain + Robot = Research

Researchers have created a robot, controlled by a rat brain, to help study memory and look into the causes behind some debilitating diseases. The blob of nerves forming the brain of the robot was taken from the neural cortex in a rat foetus and then treated to dissolve the connections between individual neurons.Sensory input from the sonar on the robot is piped to the blob of cells to help them form new connections that will aid the machine as it navigates around its pen.The study has big implications, say the researchers. The brain cells have been taught how to control the robot's movements so it can steer round obstacles and the next step, say its creators, is to get it to recognise its surroundings.Once the robot can do this the researchers plan to disrupt the memories in a bid to recreate the gradual loss of mental faculties seen in diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.Interesting stuff from the BBC.Side note: When you watch the video, notice the volume bar. But these go to eleven!

I remember a very clever RODENT DISPOSER.

Not too long ago, I saw a WONDERFUL RODENT "TRAP" from not too long ago.... It used a 5-gallon bucket with anti-freeze (coolant) at the bottom, and a ROD going through close to the to to of the bucket. A ROD ran through the two top holes, and a small "coke" bottle was hung OVER the bucket (how attached) and the bottle was 'GREASED' or baited with peanut butter, or other stuff RATS like. A stick (ramp) board led to the top of the bucket - turns out, the creature in question would go for bait, the center rod would spin, dumping him in the fatal coolant. Here in Florida, we have a screen porch that has entries and exits for our FRIENDLY critters (birds, squirrels) but I think this guy (BIG ONE) lives in our foliage. WE DON'T like him... Can you direct me to it? Thanks - Brian

Giant rat-eating plant discovered

O_O Check out this giant pitcher plant from the Phillipines. You've heard of venus flytraps? Regular pitcher plants? Small fry compared to this behemoth. Nepenthes attenboroughii (named after Sir David Attenborough) is way bigger than those relatively tame plants, and dissolves its prey with "acid-like enzymes". From the article: "The plant is among the largest of all pitchers and is believed to be the largest meat-eating shrub, dissolving rats with acid-like enzymes.">Whimper<Call me cowardly, but I get the willies when we start discovering plants that can eat small rodents...who knows what else is out there in the as-yet-unexplored areas of the jungle...Link

Camoflauged Cage

Hey, I'm guessing this isn't a problem something that is only troublesome to me. You see, I am not allowed any pets, but you know, I am planning on adopting a couple of rats. (yea rats!) I need to make a cage which is hidden/camoflauged. It will already slightly be hidden and I'm sure I can arrange furniture in a way to conceal further. The cage needs to have air flow freely, made of plastic or coated metal, have a way to easily clean it, and it has to be escape proof! (no wire floors though, how ghastly) The rats I will aquire will be babies, about 4 weeks old. If they are males they'll get to be about 2 pounds and about three feet (including that wonderful tail xD) In a year. I live in an efficiency apartment, so I can't hide them in a closet (and if you ever seen a rat reaching out to grab the rapidly diaspearing light you wouldn't want to anyway) My best bet is "walling" off my room (which has the only bathroom) with a curtain, rearranging the furniture, and of course have a clever disguise! My first attempt (I was merely fostering these guys, their owner got evicted) was a storage drawer bin, I sawed off the back of the first drawer (and was planning on expanding throughout the set) and stapled in chicken wire to help with airflow. The fact that it was a mostly plastic drawer made it easy to remove and hose down quickly. I also sawed a little hole to hold up their water bottle which is an absolute MUST. They will knock over water bowls, sit in it, and most crazy of all, stuff bedding in it to absorb it. The main problem with this set up is that of course, you can see through it and see the little guys running amuk. I placed a blanket halfway covering the front and covering the sides, but Jackie decided that he was bored and pulled it all in, thusly exposing him and getting him caught `_` It lasted 2 months and I got them into a new home anyway. So! I'm sure I'm not the only one who has to hide a pet/pets dwelling! Does anyone have ideas??

What are some ideas to build AN ULTIMATE RAT CAGE built from my 8'' x 10'' screened in porch?

I do not have much time to spend with my rats anymore and as such I would like to build them a much bigger area for play and exercise in. Here are some factors I need to contend with: 1. I live in florida and it gets HOT, how can I build a cooling down area? 2. What substrate for the bedding should I use? It has to be cheap and I am planning on shoveling and hosing down the area for cleaning. 3. What little features can I provide to entertain them (aka: "enrichment") 4. I would like a little grass area for them, would this destroy the concrete floor? 5. This can be really cool, what would YOU do with all that space? Keep in mind the name of the game is to make cleaning as easy as possible while creating a rattie wonderland. And to answer your question that must be brewing, I only have 6 rats. Possibly when I am down to three rats I will take them back inside and use the outside as a play area or fostering rescued rats. Oh, and I also have a 4''x4'' storage area that could also be utilized(attached to the porch), maybe I'll put them there when it's time to sleep.

Does anyone know how to preserve meals like they do for Rat Packs/ MRE's? Answered

I am looking to go hiking for 10 days, but am not completely enthralled with my options for food. The rest of my team have either gone for the dried option or have gotten themselves Rat Packs. Dried is really boring, and the Rat Packs.... only about 2 of the menus are edible. I know that if I make the meals myself, they would taste a heck of a lot better. My problem is with preserving agents. So, if I wanted to make my own type of ready meal that could withstand 30 degrees C+ during the day, survive a 3 week boat trip and train journey before being used, how would i go about doing it?

How do I keep cats and possibly rats from using my first contaner garden (food) for their own litter or home or eating?

I live in Maryland in a truly urban environment, but I would love to have some help setting up my first food container garden. I don't really want to make raised beds because I'm afraid the neighborhood cats and rats will ruin it. I really would love to grow my own culinary herbs, some peppers, onions or garlic, asian veggies maybe some tomatoes and such. Could anyone give me all the details?  Is that even possible without raised beds?I have both a front and back porch and I would love it to be organic if possible . I'm a first time gardener but I've been wanting to do this for years and I really need to get it started soon.

Cat acts like he is drugged up with morphine, not himself. Rat poison is mysteriously missing. Could it be? Answered

What symptoms of the standard green rat poison will be present in cats? For mild symptoms. (does anyone have experiance with this?) I have found that vitamin K is almost an antidote, although not sure. The symptoms listed here are not present, or we cannot tell for sure. No litter in the box, no noticeable bleeding yet, he has been acting funny like that all day yesterday too. I suspect it may be a very mild poisoning, but do not know what symptoms may exist for such. Thank you.

Where can I recover transparant plastic plates like polycarbonate from?

I want to make a condo for rats out of an old closet. But because it is quite dark in the closet (even with the door removed), I want to replace the wooden side panels with something transparant like plexiglas or polycarbonate. But as a student I do not have much money so I want to keep is as cheap as possible. It has to be strong enough to support some shelves. I know I can always take away as much wood as I can from the sides and then cover it with al metal gauze but I find the idea with the transparant plastic more beautiful.

Can I use masonry paint on a car ? Answered

Hello, I want to rat my car up with army drab paint. It's on a budget. I found the perfect flat matt colour but it's a masonry paint. I have read about these paints; they are flexible; they are breathable but don't let water under the surface.; they are long lasting. So, if I key the car first and clean it; it would seem logical, on some level ,  that masonry would be suitable. I tried to research this but the entries are about mainly people trying to get splashed masonry paint off their cars; so to that degree it seems to adhere well. While this will be a rat car; I do actually want it to stay on; the finish is less important. Any thoughts ? Thanks

When it comes to noises near your circut breaker, listen to your children.

Well the other day I was at home and my parents were at work. I was hearing some weird noises from around our circut breaker. So I called my dad and told him I was hearing noises and it sound electrical. He didn't believe me until last night until I told him there were more noises comeing from it. So he opened the little door and flipped one of the switch thingies back and forth and it was arcing! So we replaced it and there was this weird blue purpley powder on it. So if your children hear noises around your circut breaker, you might want to check it. My mom said she heard something coming from over there but she thought it was a mouse or rat outside or in the wall. (Our neighbor has rats and they come over to our house all the time)
