Instamorph Build Night at Arch Reactor Hackerspace, St. Louis, Missouri

On Tuesday, April 21st we held a build night at Arch Reactor (in St. Louis, Missouri) with Instamorph. There was a very excited turnout of over 15 people being introduced to the moldable plastic product. Some members incorporated their creations into existing projects, such as a loop to hold a weather balloon safely onto the quick release pipe during the pre-launch filling in order to measure the total lift without losing any of the gas. Another member created a diffuser for a LED project that used RFID tags to cause different combinations of colored LEDs to turn on when a tag was scanned.  Others experimented with the product to discover ways they might use Instamorph in other projects in the future. The big discoveries of the night were that any unused portions or failed creations could simply be placed back into the hot water and reshaped into version 2.0 or something new entirely and that once it cools Instamorph is virtually indestructible. See the photo of a flat sheet of it being bent into a taco shape. Process: We used an electric kettle to heat up our water to the correct temperature of 140 degrees F / 60 degrees C, and then poured it into small bowls. I had initially thought that each person could start with 3 ounces of the pellets, but the measuring cup that I brought only held 2 ounces. After heating that portion up in the water, we discovered that 2 ounces was plenty for most projects being considered. The member in charge of our workshop had asked those who did not have an idea for the Instamorph to consider making a hanger to hold individual shop safety glasses. He molded a piece into a design for that. Later it was discovered that the hearing protection holder dome in the shop was exactly the size to hold shop glasses. Attempts may be made later to fashion a "nosepiece" and "earpieces" from Instamorph and attach them to the dome to hold several pair of safety glasses on it instead of on the wall. It was also discussed to place a safety glasses holder at various stations throughout the shop to make them more accessible for users in the shop, and thus more likely to be worn.  Problems encountered:  The bowls that I had brought were plastic, so if the heated pellets were pressed into the bowl hard enough they would stick a little, but could be pushed off with just a little effort. In retrospect, I would use glass bowls the next time.  I would also consider using a crock pot to keep the water at a near constant temperature for any personal projects, but the electric kettle and bowls worked well for the build night. We also had an issue with the warmed Instamorph sticking to an acrylic roller and a plastic mold meant for cake decorating. It worked fine if the Instamorph had been allowed to cool while flattening it out by hand, then rolled. However, when it was removed from the water and immediately rolled, it cooled quickly and adhered to both the acrylic roller and the plastic mold. Much scraping, reheating, and elbow grease were applied in order to remove the Instamorph from those tools. Tools made from other materials might work better for this process.

Arc reactor for girls :)

Hi guys, I hope this is the right place for this! I've been scouring you tube and Instructables for the last hour trying to find an arc reactor build that's small enough for a girl. I'm doing a Pepper Potts/Rescue build of sorts and would definitely feel more comfortable going from a tutorial for the reactor, but the problem is, all the reactor builds out there fairly dwarf me and stick out really, really far. Does anyone know of any smaller reactors? Don't have to be screen accurate, as this if for a Pepper that doesn't really exist, but definitely looking for LED lighting. Thanks!

Nuclear Reactors and Batteries

Hydrogen fusion is a promising source of energy. They have made fusion reactors already. Though they aren't going to supply our energy needs because they consume more energy than the make. Fission reactors have been already made and are good at making energy. Unfortunately they have dangerous radioactive byproducts and wastes. Please post anything you want as long as it has something to do with nuclear reactors.

A glimpse into nuclear disaster.

A team of engineers has used an endoscope to carry out the first visual inspection of Windscale 1 nuclear reactor for more than 50 years. In October 1957, it was the scene of what was the world's worst nuclear accident when it caught fire and released radioactive material into the atmosphere.Just over 50 years ago, British nuclear scientists, under political pressure from a succession of Prime Ministers, had been pushing the reactor to and beyond operating limits in an attempt to develop the UK's own independent H-bomb and achieve an "alliance of equals" with the US.When the fire occurred, the scientists were faced with a choice: let it burn, and contaminate Europe, or dump water on it, and potentially die in a nuclear explosion. They chose the latter, risking their own lives to save people who didn't even know there was a problem.That sounds heroic, but the official report into the incident blamed the scientists for the accident, rather than let the US find out about the H-bomb programme just in the days before signing a treaty to share their existing knowledge with the UK.Windscale (now known as Sellafield - the name was changed after the accident) is now in the long process of closing down. Along with jobs, buildings that marked the dawn of the nuclear age are being slowly demolished and moved ... somewhere else. They don't know where, yet, but it will probably end up remaining on site in deep holes (down in the porous sandstone that carries the local water-table).The original piles were shut down immediately after the accident, and the site's AGR reactor was closed down 27 years ago, but it is only recently that they figured out what to do with them, and they are now being decommissioned as a "UK's demonstration project (meaning; "we've never done this before, we'll work out the bugs in remote Cumbria before we try it on a reactor near a city").As part of the decommissioning work, they now need to see what is left in the ashes of the world's second reactor disaster before working out what to do next.I don't know about you, but I'm not convinced that a paper boilersuit would be enough protection. Maybe that's why the chap on the right looks like he's crossing himself...

How do Tokamaks work?

Ive been reading into the nuclear physics behind devices like tokamaks which are promising candidates for a viable fusion reactor. The thing is, from everything I've seen and read it looks like the popular model for a tokamak is only the in between stage. Its like describing the forces on an airplane in flight but neglecting to explain how it takes off or lands. Can anybody tell me how they get those things fired up and cooled down? And I dont mean the ignition process or simply turning off the input power. I mean how to get the gas inside the darn thing to stay in the containment field until its been ionized? or is it ionized already? Anything at all would be much appreciated. =]

Small self-contained energy source

Hello,            I am interested in making a energy source similar to iron man's arc reactor in the fact that it is small, self contained, and and powerful. I would like it to be hand-held, but I can deal with slightly larger or even desk size. It needs to be long lasting. I am well aware that an arc reactor is fictional, but I just need something that may be similar. It can be a large project (I have time) but needs to be not super expencive. Around $500 is the max I can go for!  I hope someone can help, 13islucky

This is some what true but in the case of research  there is no “bad” waste being emitted from the reactions that undergo in theses reactors. Commercial Nuclear Reactors or CNRs do produce a lot of residue. They produce this residue by using their fuel so much to the point of radioactive waste. Small Research Reactors or SRRs do not do this, instead of using it up they produce new isotopes that can be useful instead of becoming waste.   So why don't we use SRRs? We do not use SRRs because of financial and safety. The safety concern comes in when the reactors are able to undergo Nuclear fission witch releases huge amounts of heat that no current materiel known to men kind is capable of withstanding. The other type of SRR is safe and financially friendly but does not produce electricity instead it uses approximately 1 million volts DC, but produces isotopes from elements such as Hydrogen witch is found in water.   In conclusion nuclear energy has not ended.

Tell me more about nuclear power as source of electricity.

That's why I need your personal and external opinions and view.The first source of electricity in my country (France) is nuclear.In a previous forum, I've noticed that a lot of Citizen of USA consider Nuclear energy is too much polluting and too much expensive (democrats candidates for US election reject the idea of more nuclear plants), and that it's not seen as a serious solution to reduce pollution and CO2 emission, etc ... In few words : you seems to dislike it. So, I would like to know why exactly, and that you tell me more about what you think about it.Here it's quite different. Nuclear energy is seen as a mean to be energetically independent. It's a mean to pollute less. And it's almost a local speciality, like are crepes, baguettes and croissants.The main producer is EDF (which stands for Electricite De France (electricity of France)). Until 1999, EDF had the monopoly (and that was better and safer IMHO). Since then, because of EU regulation, we've been forced to open the market ...Here are some data :EDF is one of the world's largest producers of electricity. In 2003, it produced 22% of the European Union's electricity, primarily from nuclear power:nuclear: 74.5%hydro-electric: 16.2%thermal: 9.2%wind power and other renewable sources: 0.1%Its 58 active nuclear reactors (in 2004) are spread out over 20 sites (nuclear power plants). How do I manually turn on a computer powersupply??

I want to turn my old 480 watt computer power supply into a bench power supply, but I have no idea how to turn the thing on without connecting to the computer. The power supply is a 480 watt Reactor. I heard there is a standby 5v, and will turn on full power when you give it some logic input. Please post. Thx

Our main source of  energy right now is nuclear energy. Although Nuclear energy  might seem to be a reliable source of energy, it is not.  Nuclear energy is not a reliable source of energy  because you need to extract Uranium ore from the earth's core which might seem as a good  source of Uranium it is not. This is not a endless supply  of uranium because it will eventually  run out of uranium .   So what can we do to solve this issue? The answer is alternative energy.  Alternative energy  is energy that can be renewed  and that is reliable. One solution is replacing Uranium fuel rods in a reactors core with Tritium. Tritium can be used  as a substitute for uranium because it has the same properties as uranium except that it has a shorter  half life.  Tritium is made by fusing solid  Hydrogen With Lithium  in a Farnsworth reactor.  This also has its problems one major  problem is the radiation and heat that is generated during the process  of fusion. Tritium can be then used as a fuel  pellet for a Nuclear reactor when it is mixed with Deuterium which is a solid. Tritium is also a good fuel pellet because it only has a life span of about 12.4 years, then  it decays into Helium 6 which is very harmless. Uranium on the other hand is not  safe because it has a life span of about 2000 years and it gradually decays into other radioactive material such as Thorium, neptunium, ECT.... This is Called the Uranium - Thorium cycle. The tritium is also ecologically friendly because it  can be made from H1 which is found in water H2O.  H1 is called Portion and is extracted through a process called electrolyses in which water is charged by a D.C current.

Tyler Christensen, or christensent of MITERS, the MIT Electronic Research Society, took a more high-voltage approach to Halloween this year.  He made this awesome dual resonant solid state tesla coil (DRSSTC) hat! Last year he was responsible for the "Build a Fusion Reactor" Instructable.  This year, his likeness to a mad scientist seems to be increasing!  How long before we see him splice a tesla coil and a human?! BIG electro magnet uses?

So i have been taking apart alot of electronics, looking for sweet pieces for my arc reactor im building and today i decided to take apart an old Goulds jet Pump.  Inside i was please to find all this coperwire. I just LOVE the look of this thing, and i know people always build coil guns and all that cool weapon stuff. There has GOT to be a cool use for this, other then giant paperweight.   Any suggestions.  Here is a photo of it.  That copper goes all the way through it. and looks the same on the other side.

Blacked Out?

I was going to ask are you caught in the blackouts I'm seeing on the news? Dopey question. Anyhoo, if you're reading this after the power comes back on, how did you cope?  What Instructables could you use to make life easier? UPDATE:  And, if you're an engineer, could you design a better system where a single throw of a switch on a substation blacks out five million people, shuts down two nuclear reactors and even closes beaches? The outage was triggered after a piece of equipment was switched off at a substation in Arizona, officials said. ... Daniel Froetscher, a vice-president at APS, told the Associated Press news agency the malfunction at the substation was "not a deliberate act". "The employee was just switching out a piece of equipment that was problematic," Mr Froetscher said.

LED wiring and soldering help needed

Hey everyone! New to the forum here but not to instructables. For quite a while i've been looking into making an iron man arc reactor. I've learned how to wire and solder regular LED's but i am at a loss for how to wire and solder surface mount LED's. I've tried searching and googling for some answers but i haven't really come up with much. Can anyone help me out? Oh and a bonus question for not only surface mount, but also regular LED's. I know how to hook up one LED to a battery pack...but what about hooking up multiple ones? Thanks for any help! I appreciate it!

Silhouette June 2015 Build Night at Arch Reactor Hackerspace, St. Louis, Missouri

On Tuesday, June 9th, the Arch Reactor Hackerspace (in St. Louis, Missouri) hosted a Build Night with the Silhouette Portrait. There were an excited dozen people who showed up for an introduction to the device. Many members were seeking to discover ways to use the device for current projects.  Others were eager to learn which materials the Portrait could cut, the limitations of the Silhouette Studio software, and how they might go about using the Silhouette Portrait for other projects in the future. Process: I already had the Silhouette Studio software downloaded to my laptop and had the Silhouette Portrait out on the large at the front of the our classroom space.  Those in attendance gathered around as I ran down the features of the device and software and we discussed the use of the cutting mat and how to set the depth of the blade. We then watched the introduction movie and a few others before attempting to use the device to cut a file.  The Arch Reactor already has a large vinyl cutter in our space, however it shares a keyboard, mouse, and monitor with our very popular laser cutter. Due to the popularity of the laser cutter, it is sometimes difficult for members to even learn how to use the vinyl cutter without making a special trip in on a day when few members are present. Plus, being a larger device, the learning curve seems a bit steep for those who have yet to learn how to use it. It can also only be utilized in our space. One advantage that was quickly noted for the Silhouette Portrait is that anyone can download the free software and design their project at home, save it to a flash drive or the cloud, then arrive at our location to complete their project using one of our computers or their own laptop. A second advantage is that being so small, the Portrait could be moved to any desk in our 2400 square foot location temporarily, or even checked out of the space by a member to be used at home for a few days. We can even bring it along with us to local demonstrations and interactively challenge others to be creative while introducing them to our hackerspace.  The Silhouette Studio software seems intuitive and one member remarked that it reminded her a lot of Inkscape, which several of our members are already familiar with. The portability of the unit is not something to be overlooked.  I can see this being very useful for projects that require the same print to be created repeatedly. Such as wedding invitations, or multiple t-shirts. The versatile amount of material that can be cut with it had many present talking about how they might use the Portrait. Troubles we encountered: The night wasn't without problems though. Aside from having trouble playing some of the videos, I had forgotten to bring my pack of white cardstock to the event. This prompted us to rather foolheartedly attempt to cut a file with a normal sheet of printer paper. We eagerly stuck the paper to the cutting mat and inserted it into the Portrait. A member attempted to send a file to it from his computer, but nothing happened with the device and he received a message that the cut was complete. I'm not sure if this was a driver issue, a software issue, or an issue with the cutting mat not having been installed properly. We then connected my laptop back to the Portrait and sent a test file to it. The cutting mat was pulled into the device and it began to cut the paper. The problem occurred once the Portrait was finished with the cut and we attempted rather unceremoniously to remove the cut paper from the mat. Normal printer paper sticks to the mat very well, especially with the first or second use. Of course it ripped the paper as we attempted to remove it from the cutting mat and we realized that a thicker cardstock would be needed. This was more naive beginner user error than anything else.  I do not recommend that you attempt using thin paper. A second issue was the discovery that the free Silhouette Studio software does not allow the import of .SVG files. Many members of our hackerspace are familiar with and use these files for projects. In order to import .SVG files, we would need to upgrade to the Designer Edition for $50 or the Business Edition for $100.  If the Silhouette Portrait gets used as much as I believe it will, this upgrade will likely be a no-brainer for us.  Once the paper had been carefully scraped from the cutting mat using a former plastic gift card, some of our members set out to make a cut from the Vellum that had been sent with the printer.  This proved to be easier to remove from the cutting mat and the members were very happy with the the lace designs they had cut. Additionally, some members used a few sheets of cardstock they already had to cut out some borders from the files that came with the Silhouette Studio software.  We are already looking at purchasing some accessories for the Portrait, such as Pens and additional cutting mats. The later would be a huge advantage because it would allow us to prepare a second material for the next cut while the first was being cut or removed from the mat.  Should the Portrait see as much use as I expect it will, we may be looking at other products from Silhouette, such as the Cameo, the Curio, and the Mint. Being used in a hackerspace by over 50 members, the size and additional versatility of Curio definitely would seem to fit our needs better. The additional thickness and variety of materials that could be used with it are of great interest to the creative tendencies of hackerspace members and makers.  We are also looking forward to Silhouette Link, a new feature coming to Silhouette Studio® that allows customers to send a cut job from any device directly to their Silhouette machine, remotely, through the use of a mobile device app. What I would have done differently:  Not only would I have tested the videos we watched on our projector prior to the meeting, but I would have remembered my cardstock on the night of the event. I also would recommend that anyone else hosting a Build Night use the Portrait to cut out several test files in a variety of materials. Definately take a look at the limitations of the Studio Software and decide if you want to upgrade to the Designer's edition for the importing of .SVG files or not, too. Conclusion: Overall, the night proved to be a successful introduction for several of our members to the Silhouette Portrait. I think all of us were inspired by what it can do for us as individuals and as a hackerspace.  We already have ideas to make a few t-shirts for an upcoming event using heat transfer vinyl and a logo.  I'm sure many projects will be sporting vinyl stickers and other materials that are cut with it.

How to moderate new submissions to a Community Group Workshop?

I am the owner/moderator for the Community Group Workshop, Arch Reactor Hackerspace. I am currently am able to moderate who becomes members and I can edit the Workshop page.  https://www.instructables.com/group/archreactor/ I have added my own new Instructables to the Workshop and received a message that the moderator would need to approve them.  However, there is no place that I can find to moderate the submitted Instructables from myself or other members of our hackerspace's Workshop. Under "Admin Features" the only choices I have are: "Manage Admins" "PM Group", "Edit Group", and "Categories". If I turn off the "Moderate New Instructables", it will allow submitted Instructables to post, but I'm not able to moderate the new submissions individually. There also seems to be a second bug that does not allow me to add more Categories to my Workshop. Typing a new Category name on a second line will only add the second category to the end of the first one.  It is as thought I'm only allowed to have one Category. Any assistance would be extremely helpful. Sincerely, Gene

Nuclear power costing

I am doing the cost of electricity for a nuclear power plant and was wonder if this costing equation seems right:  Take a plant at the cost of $ 7 billion and produces 1100 MW of power 7000000000/1100/1000= $ 6363.63 per kW Normally the life cycle is 40 years and a weighted average cost of capital is 14.50% So 6363.63 kWh * .1450 = 922.72 The typical capacity factor ranges from 75% to 85% so the average will be taken 80% This capacity factor is then multiplied by the number of hours in a year which is 8760 0.80 * 8760= 7008 kWh a year the plant is running So: 922.72/ 7008 = 0.132 which is 13.2 cents per kWh. Operation and maintenance costs with fuel is estimated at 1.5 cent per kWh Property taxes is at around $0.02 cent/kWh Fuel cycle is at around $0.03 cent/ kWh Waste cost and the decommissioning costs together are 0.02 cents/ kWh So the total cost stands at around 21.7 or 22 cents per kWh ive done another equation out for 3rd generation reactors that comes out at a lower cost. does this seem right? i am not sure how to work out the weighted average capital cost % (that was a figure i took from a site) i will be grateful for any reply

GID Vials, Tritium, TRASERS, Powders and Chemicals GLOW IN THE DARK!

TRITIUM! So I get a lot of questions from my post and instructables. Tritium Vials are Radioactive Hydrogen H3, also known as hydrogen-3 is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen. It is contained in small glass vials coated in colored phosphor then encased in glass or sealed plastics. These are commonly seen in Gun Sights, Watches (TRASERS) and some Emergency Exit Signs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tritium_illumination Small amounts are legal and for approved uses. Read the NRC guides Typically the Trit vials are small, expensive and dim. The latest GID (Glow in the Dark) Chemsticks, LED's and GID Powders or paints seems much more effective and usable. * Cyalume, as used in a lightsticks, emits light by chemiluminescence of a fluorescent dye (also called fluorescor) activated by cyalume reacting with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalyst, such as sodium salicylate. It is the most efficient chemiluminescent reaction known. up to 15% quantum efficiency. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chemiluminescence New LED low power requirements and high Lumen or light output have provided many solutions that are low cost, high power and longer lasting. GID Paint or Powders are "charged" with light or daylight sources as with your traditional kids toys or stickers. New products are brighter, glow longer and are now waterproof, have many colors and applications. http://www.4physics.com/catalog/GIDinfo.php Also this is occasionally confused with the chemical illumination. However these paints powders and materials use common phosphorescent materials include zinc sulfide and strontium aluminate. Use of zinc sulfide for safety related products dates back to the 1930s. However, the development of strontium oxide aluminate, with a luminance approximately 10 times greater than zinc sulfide, has relegated most zinc sulfide based products to the novelty category. Instructables in the Telegraph -- Weird and wonderful inventions

The Telegraph ran a great article featuring online DIY culture and Instructables. Weird and wonderful inventions by Chris StevensMeet the DIY enthusiasts using the internet in their fight against throwaway society.The internet has spawned a new breed of extreme DIY enthusiasts. They build jet engines in their garages using instructions downloaded from forums, and they upload videos of the explosive results. They weld together rollercoasters out of scrap materials and household items. They teach themselves taxidermy to build "The Mouse Mouse", a real mouse with electrical innards. Or, like 17-year-old Thiago Olson, who built a fusion reactor in his house, they're scouting for parts in their local B & Q. The online DIYers are rebelling against a consumer society that has convinced many of us that everything is bought, not made. "It's a reaction against a mass-produced culture," says Eric Wilhelm, founder of Instructables.com. "People want to express themselves and show their individuality - building something cool that you can't buy and showing how you did it is a great way to express yourself."While the traditional DIYer is overjoyed to have put up a set of shelves without losing a finger, the extreme online DIYer spends the weekend with an angle-grinder turning a supermarket trolley into an armchair, or building a Guitar Hero game controller from scratch. Online projects show you how to make your own USB charger, extend the battery life of your laptop, or use a Mont Blanc refill to transform a £1 pen."People are passionate about all sorts of things," says Wilhelm. "From the wacky, far-out jet engines and taxidermy to the everyday stuff like how to tie your shoes or manage washing your laundry most efficiently."The projects are uploaded by users, who offer each other step-by-step advice on everything from the sinister to the charming. The extreme DIYers dare each other to create increasingly elaborate projects, posting photos and videos of near-misses and successes. The internet is perfect for this kind of experimentation; it's a place where inquisitive geeks meet friends with power-tools. All these projects have gorgeous colour photos to go with them, and the strength of interest in these extreme-DIY sites has led communities to meet offline. This year, Makezine.com held a fair in the US attended by 45,000 "makers"."Besides the skill of building and the exchange of ideas, it's a lot of fun," says Phillip Torrone, senior editor of Make magazine. "We seem to be in an era of thinking more about the things we buy, make, consume and cherish. The result of that is people making things - it's more gratifying." Scandals over rip-offs, such as the recent study that showed ink-jet printer cartridges wilfully waste more than 50 per cent of the ink (tinyurl.com/2957jw), make Torrone's DIY ethos all the more appealing.If you're the sort of clumsy oaf that regularly snaps USB keys off in their sockets, these DIY sites also offer advice on repairing consumer electronics. Wilhem's favourite DIY project is the dachshund wheelchair (tinyurl.com/ytc6bb). The DIYer who made it explains: "Our dachshund hurt his back, so for rehab we made him swim a lot, and I built this chair until he could use his back legs again."Online DIYers have an enthusiasm for science and exploration, and many are simply reacting to the low-quality of mass-produced goods, especially consumer electronics. They object to our modern throw-away culture. The DIYers also upstage technology manufacturers by demonstrating easy ways to fix what would otherwise be thrown away. Here at Instructables we run a ton of contests! We also get asked a ton of questions about those contests. Below is a list of the contest questions we get asked most frequently and also some questions that I feel could use a little more explaining. (Let’s be honest - reading the official rules is not fun.)Please ask addition questions in this forum topic - I'm sure there are some I have not covered! General Contest Questions How do you choose which contests to run? We do this in a few different ways.Editorial/in-house - planned based on past contest themes, what’s trending in search, which categories/channels need a little love, new site features or if there’s a certain type of content we want. Contest ideas also come from staff meetings and through the official contest idea forum topic.I have an idea for a contest! How do I tell you guys?Please post here and let us know! We can’t run all of them, but we love seeing the ideas you guys come up with. How do I win a contest?Post something awesome! Check out this collection of tutorials that will tell you how to write a great instructable. Why do Instructables employees enter the contests?We enter contests to set the bar and give an example of the type of entries we want in the contests. We're not able to win them, though!It's important to note that several employees were authors on the site before they worked here, though, so you might see some wins in our achievements! :) Entering Contests Can I enter if my country is not listed in the official rules?Yes! You can definitely enter.However, you must have a mailing address in an eligible country to win. If you have a friend in the US or another eligible country that can receive your prize, go ahead and enter!You can read more about our progress to add more countries to the eligible shipping locations here. I live in -----, why can't I enter?!Chances are your country has incredibly strict laws regarding gambling, sweepstakes and contests. We try our best to play by the rules, and if we can't meet the minimum requirements to run a contest in your country, we don't run them there!That's the easy answer. The hard answer is that it's very complicated and involves lots of risk and scary legal language. Why isn't my entry showing up in the contest? I entered three minutes ago!Real humans look at each entry! This means it take take a while sometimes. We work standard office hours, 9-5ish PST. We tend to moderate first thing in the morning, Monday-Friday.If you enter at the end of the work day or over the weekend, you’ll have to wait until the next business day to be accepted. Why can I only enter one contest with one Instructable?It’s all the spirit of fairness. In the past, we've had popular instructables sweep multiple contests with huge wins. This new rule will allow more authors to win! Why was I rejected from the contest?The number one reason for this is not fitting the contest theme - we try our best to explain the sorts of entries we’re looking for on the main page of each contest, so double check your eligibility there.We also sometimes make mistakes or encounter bugs during the approval/denial process. (Checking the wrong box, clicking the wrong button, breaking the back end of the site) It’s rare, but it happens! We’re human and can’t help it, but we do our best to right those mistakes as soon as we know they happened! Why can’t I enter an instructable I published before the start date into the contest?We want to see NEW and exciting content built just for the contest. If we allowed old instructables in, we’d just see the same things over and over again. Plus, the number entries in the contests would make it very hard to choose finalists and winners.Keep in mind that simply republishing an old project will not make it eligible - we check for that. ;)Our Halloween contests are the only exception to this rule. For example, the 2013 Halloween Contest ended on 11/11/2013, so the 2014 Halloween Contest will accept entries from 11/12/2013 through the end date of the contest. :) Can I edit my Instructable after it's entered in a contest?Short answer: YES!Long answer: You can make any modifications you want to an Instructable that's already entered! We get so many entries that there's absolutely no way we'd be able to police it even if we wanted to - but it's never something we want to discourage.Improvement is always a good thing as far as I'm concerned. :)However, I must caution you: it's best to get those changes done before voting closes. The voting period matters the most because that's the time that we start looking into picking finalists.Another slightly related caveat: don't publish a mostly empty instructable and try to fill it after the contest ends. We're starting to see this happen more often, always with a promise that updates are coming. You can never tell when we'll be reviewing it as a possible finalist, so chances are you'll get overlooked going about it that way. We are currently looking at 50-300 entries per contest, so anything incomplete doesn't stand a chance these days! Finalist & Winner Selection When are the finalists selected?Finalists are selected starting the Tuesday after the contest closes. The finalist selection process normally ends Thursday of the same week, depending on how tricky the contest is and how many people give input. How are finalists selected?Finalist selection is a mixture of sponsor choices, votes and staff choices. We look for all kinds of things when it comes to picking finalists, including: good photos! Pretty photos put you five steps ahead of all the other entries already, honestly. We're going to want to click through and look at it as soon as we see it if it's pretty! good explanation of both WHAT the project is and HOW you made it. Sometimes it can be really hard to figure out what we're looking at. (Personally, if I have to spend several minutes staring at photos and reading to understand it, I'm not very excited about it anymore.) Try to convey the project through both photos and video if it's needed. For example - if it's a rocket, upload a video of it in action! a good story! I read more projects than you could ever imagine every month. I love it when an author takes time to explain why they made the project, or documents the errors they made along the way. That makes an instructable so much more enjoyable to read. :) citing your sources/inspirations - look, we realize there's hardly an original idea on the internets anymore, so we can't fault you for that. But it's only fair to give credit where credit is due. We like that. Plus, it sometimes makes for an awesome story. creativity! Look, I cannot even begin to tell you how many paracord bracelets, Altoid tin survival kits and Iron Man arc reactors I have looked at. My eyes glaze at the thought. Don't just go for the common and easy, take that project and put a new spin on it!! We always suggest authors read their own work with an objective eye. Does it make sense if you aren’t familiar with the subject already? Did you provide enough description? Are the photos understandable? How many finalists are there?To find this out easily, go to the contest page and look at the total number of prizes to be awarded. The number of finalists for a given contest will match the number of total prizes. Why wasn't my project chosen as a winner/finalist?This can happen for all kinds of reasons, honestly. See the "How are finalists selected?" question above for a more in depth explanation of what we're looking for.The most important thing I want to stress is that we are going through TONS of entries for every contest, so it's important to set yourself apart. Choose a clear and concise title, tell us a story, share great photos, explain the project well. If there are projects similar to yours in the contest already, make sure your project exceeds theirs in awesomeness. Also remember that competition is fierce in the contests, there are always a LOT of amazing entries. When it comes down to selecting winners sometimes it's the little things because when you're comparing awesome to awesome the little things are all you can look at. So be detailed orientated when writing your instructable. Judging Who judges the contests?This is typically a mix of Instructables staff and authors on the site (your peers!). Each contest is normally assigned 10-50 judges.Lately we’ve had an average of 15-20 judges complete the process. I always try to add as many judges as possible, because more judges means the judging is more fair and helps to reduce bias. How can I help judge a contest?If you’re interested in helping us judge, check out this forum topic! I’m also about to start doing weekly calls for judges in the Contest Forums, found here.To judge, you must have published at least one Instructable.I send out PMs to judges each Friday, and you might also receive one from audreyobscura. How do I judge a contest/access the judging ballot?We’ve written up an Instructable over it! You can find it here: https://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Judge-a-C...Once I’ve added you to the list of judges, you’ll be able to access the ballot. Prizes How do you pick prizes? Can I suggest prizes?I've got a pretty small budget prize here, so it's a mix of trying to be frugal but still give you guys something fancy. I try to order most of our prizes from Amazon.com because they have reliable shipping and tons of options.Right now I've been going back and forth between tools/materials and fancy electronics. I love to give out tablets, cameras and supplies for more projects, because that gives you guys something to make more awesome stuff with!If you'd like to suggest an awesome prize, do it here! I don't like these prizes, can I trade?Short answer: nope!Long answer: we choose prizes well ahead of time and order prizes at the start of the contest (for 95% of what we run) and we don’t make substitutions. We typically have anywhere from 100-250 winners a month (and increasing all the time!), so it’s not feasible to give choices and sub things out. Only three of us on staff work with ordering the prizes and shipping them out, so that would be lots of work!However, we have allowed winners to switch prizes with another winner on occasion (both parties must agree and let us know before we ship them!) and we’re fine with you selling your prize somewhere else. How do I get my prize if I win?When contest winners are announced, we’ll send you a message with a form to fill out. Make sure to fill this out completely and remember that we require a phone number and that we can’t ship to P.O. boxes.Winners are responsible for any trade tax or tariffs incurred for shipping to your location. We cannot reduce the value of the prize so you pay less tax (nice try, though, you sneaky hobbit!!). When will my prize ship?We try to ship prizes as soon as possible! 75% of our contests have prizes that are easily shipped right away and you should receive notification of shipment within a week or so.Sometimes we do have to order items AFTER the contest ends or wait for a sponsor to ship the items. If we think there will be a delay, we’ll let the winners know. We’ve been trying very hard to make sure we’re reaching out and updating winners about prize statuses.Also: VERY IMPORTANT - the sooner all winners give us their contact info, the sooner we can make big orders of custom sizes. Sometimes there’s a huge delay just because we’ve got one straggler. Be a good winner and let us give you prizes, dangit!!
