Instamorph Build Night at Arch Reactor Hackerspace, St. Louis, Missouri

On Tuesday, April 21st we held a build night at Arch Reactor (in St. Louis, Missouri) with Instamorph. There was a very excited turnout of over 15 people being introduced to the moldable plastic product. Some members incorporated their creations into existing projects, such as a loop to hold a weather balloon safely onto the quick release pipe during the pre-launch filling in order to measure the total lift without losing any of the gas. Another member created a diffuser for a LED project that used RFID tags to cause different combinations of colored LEDs to turn on when a tag was scanned.  Others experimented with the product to discover ways they might use Instamorph in other projects in the future. The big discoveries of the night were that any unused portions or failed creations could simply be placed back into the hot water and reshaped into version 2.0 or something new entirely and that once it cools Instamorph is virtually indestructible. See the photo of a flat sheet of it being bent into a taco shape. Process: We used an electric kettle to heat up our water to the correct temperature of 140 degrees F / 60 degrees C, and then poured it into small bowls. I had initially thought that each person could start with 3 ounces of the pellets, but the measuring cup that I brought only held 2 ounces. After heating that portion up in the water, we discovered that 2 ounces was plenty for most projects being considered. The member in charge of our workshop had asked those who did not have an idea for the Instamorph to consider making a hanger to hold individual shop safety glasses. He molded a piece into a design for that. Later it was discovered that the hearing protection holder dome in the shop was exactly the size to hold shop glasses. Attempts may be made later to fashion a "nosepiece" and "earpieces" from Instamorph and attach them to the dome to hold several pair of safety glasses on it instead of on the wall. It was also discussed to place a safety glasses holder at various stations throughout the shop to make them more accessible for users in the shop, and thus more likely to be worn.  Problems encountered:  The bowls that I had brought were plastic, so if the heated pellets were pressed into the bowl hard enough they would stick a little, but could be pushed off with just a little effort. In retrospect, I would use glass bowls the next time.  I would also consider using a crock pot to keep the water at a near constant temperature for any personal projects, but the electric kettle and bowls worked well for the build night. We also had an issue with the warmed Instamorph sticking to an acrylic roller and a plastic mold meant for cake decorating. It worked fine if the Instamorph had been allowed to cool while flattening it out by hand, then rolled. However, when it was removed from the water and immediately rolled, it cooled quickly and adhered to both the acrylic roller and the plastic mold. Much scraping, reheating, and elbow grease were applied in order to remove the Instamorph from those tools. Tools made from other materials might work better for this process.

What are the steps in processing uranium into fuel for reactors?

I am programming a realistic nuclear reactor program. just kinda to mess around with because this subject interests me greatly. i need to know in very detailed steps the processing of uranium ores into yellowcake then to UF6 ect. you get the idea. the whole process. i also need to know the machines and chemicals used in the process. and if you're dumb enough to think any information given to me in this question could be used to build a bomb; think again. i have neither the resources of a country to gather the uranium needed nor do i have 1000's of centrifuges to separate U238 and U235.

Connect transformers together in series? Answered

I've got 4 neon sign transformers, each outputting 12 000V at 30mA. I want to connect them together in series to increase the voltage to 48kV but I just wanna check on the right way of connecting them for safety reasons. The input for all transformers is the standard 220V AC.( I need such a high voltage for a fusion reactor) (the pic is one I found on google that's why the input voltage is 120)

Arc reactor for girls :)

Hi guys, I hope this is the right place for this! I've been scouring you tube and Instructables for the last hour trying to find an arc reactor build that's small enough for a girl. I'm doing a Pepper Potts/Rescue build of sorts and would definitely feel more comfortable going from a tutorial for the reactor, but the problem is, all the reactor builds out there fairly dwarf me and stick out really, really far. Does anyone know of any smaller reactors? Don't have to be screen accurate, as this if for a Pepper that doesn't really exist, but definitely looking for LED lighting. Thanks!

A team of engineers has used an endoscope to carry out the first visual inspection of Windscale 1 nuclear reactor for more than 50 years. In October 1957, it was the scene of what was the world's worst nuclear accident when it caught fire and released radioactive material into the atmosphere.Just over 50 years ago, British nuclear scientists, under political pressure from a succession of Prime Ministers, had been pushing the reactor to and beyond operating limits in an attempt to develop the UK's own independent H-bomb and achieve an "alliance of equals" with the US.When the fire occurred, the scientists were faced with a choice: let it burn, and contaminate Europe, or dump water on it, and potentially die in a nuclear explosion. They chose the latter, risking their own lives to save people who didn't even know there was a problem.That sounds heroic, but the official report into the incident blamed the scientists for the accident, rather than let the US find out about the H-bomb programme just in the days before signing a treaty to share their existing knowledge with the UK.Windscale (now known as Sellafield - the name was changed after the accident) is now in the long process of closing down. Along with jobs, buildings that marked the dawn of the nuclear age are being slowly demolished and moved ... somewhere else. They don't know where, yet, but it will probably end up remaining on site in deep holes (down in the porous sandstone that carries the local water-table).The original piles were shut down immediately after the accident, and the site's AGR reactor was closed down 27 years ago, but it is only recently that they figured out what to do with them, and they are now being decommissioned as a "UK's demonstration project (meaning; "we've never done this before, we'll work out the bugs in remote Cumbria before we try it on a reactor near a city").As part of the decommissioning work, they now need to see what is left in the ashes of the world's second reactor disaster before working out what to do next.I don't know about you, but I'm not convinced that a paper boilersuit would be enough protection. Maybe that's why the chap on the right looks like he's crossing himself...

How do Tokamaks work?

Ive been reading into the nuclear physics behind devices like tokamaks which are promising candidates for a viable fusion reactor. The thing is, from everything I've seen and read it looks like the popular model for a tokamak is only the in between stage. Its like describing the forces on an airplane in flight but neglecting to explain how it takes off or lands. Can anybody tell me how they get those things fired up and cooled down? And I dont mean the ignition process or simply turning off the input power. I mean how to get the gas inside the darn thing to stay in the containment field until its been ionized? or is it ionized already? Anything at all would be much appreciated. =]

How to make an Mark 6 reactor for mounting on a guitar?

I am trying to make my guitar look like the armor of Iron Man. I have seen lots of versions, but the Arc Reactors I have seen are all too thick to mount under the strings on a guitar. I just want to make the triangle that lights up in the center. What materials can I use to make the frame the exact size and height that I need? And what can I use for the top cover? Wiring for cosplay - arc reactor - soldering help?

Iron Man cosplay trouble - my soldering iron won't tin, first off. It worked fine last week. I've tried cleaning, sanding off the dirty parts, using flux... I'm stuck. Also, it's heating the solder enough to melt it, but not the wires enough for it to create any kind of connection. It's a pretty small space that I've got to wire everythig in is pretty tight. I could post pics of the set up / ideas for the actual wiring? I've got 6 white LEDs and 2 3v batteries for power.

Small self-contained energy source

Hello,            I am interested in making a energy source similar to iron man's arc reactor in the fact that it is small, self contained, and and powerful. I would like it to be hand-held, but I can deal with slightly larger or even desk size. It needs to be long lasting. I am well aware that an arc reactor is fictional, but I just need something that may be similar. It can be a large project (I have time) but needs to be not super expencive. This is some what true but in the case of research  there is no “bad” waste being emitted from the reactions that undergo in theses reactors. Commercial Nuclear Reactors or CNRs do produce a lot of residue. They produce this residue by using their fuel so much to the point of radioactive waste. Small Research Reactors or SRRs do not do this, instead of using it up they produce new isotopes that can be useful instead of becoming waste.   So why don't we use SRRs? We do not use SRRs because of financial and safety. The safety concern comes in when the reactors are able to undergo Nuclear fission witch releases huge amounts of heat that no current materiel known to men kind is capable of withstanding. The other type of SRR is safe and financially friendly but does not produce electricity instead it uses approximately 1 million volts DC, but produces isotopes from elements such as Hydrogen witch is found in water.   In conclusion nuclear energy has not ended.

What are the effects of Henrys in the use of inductors? Answered

I'm looking for information that might help me find a reactor for my variac setup. I noticed that almost every inductor I looked at has a Henry rating, I'm curious as to how this effects the circuit. After reading up on what a Henry is, I'm not sure I understand what it is exactly. I have also heard of people referring to inductors by their inductance, would they be referring to their Henry rating or their voltage/amperage rating? P.S. My variac is a 125/260v 11A military surplus, for all those interested.

Do you really think that it is possible ?

To build a suit like IRONMAN'S, Does the technology really exist and how would you begin and what kind a CAD software would you use to begin the design,To build an ARCH Reactor period let alone miniturize it? Does an ARCH reactor even exist or is it just a clever part of the comic book story line? And what about a repulsive ray? Does the techology exist , is it even feasible? Ad what about the head-up display that was in the suit ,and could it be hooked to a satellite computer for ground to air GPS, and how would you write the code for the software to hardware that does as of yet exist?

Instructable not showing up.

Hey, I published an instructable yesterday about 1 o'clock central time about a DIY CO2 reactor, and it still hasn't shown up under the "recent" tab. Is this normal? Is there someone I need to contact about this problem?

Fitting a hydrogen/oxygen reactor into a thermos? Or at least in a container about the size of a birdbath stand? Answered

EDIT: I decided that starting with steam instead of hydrogen would be much more efficient, much safer, simpler, and cheaper than reacting hydrogen. So if anyone knows if there is a way I can compress steam in a canister and not have it turn to water, and where to get the supplies for relatively cheap, that would be great! Merci! So my last question was how to bond hydrogen and oxygen to make water and condense it, and I got how to do that, but how hard would it be to fit this whole thing into a homemade thermos that has a screw-on hydrogen canister on the bottom? The hydrogen storage would be outside of the thermos in the canister, but there's still the reactor, condenser, and pressure release valve for safety. How hard would it be to fit it into the thermos (the thermos is about 1.5-2x the height of a store-bought thermos and about the same width, maybe a little bit wider)? If that isn't possible or logical, how about a birdbath stand? It would be a wide PVC tube reminiscent of a stone birdbath support, and would have a basin on top that contains the water after exiting the condenser.

CO2 analyzer (sensor)

Dear friends My research topic is about designing a chemical reactor for CO2 capture. I have designed an experimental reactor and I need to measure the concentration of CO2 in the outlet of the reactor. Accordingly, I need a CO2 analyzer (CO2 sensor) that would be able to measure the concentration of CO2 and record it in the computer. I have searched google, but I have not found too many products that can be used in my research. Could you inform me if you know any CO2 analyzer or sensor that meets the following criteria: 1) I need to record the variations in CO2 concentration in short periods of time, for example every 20 sec. The analyzer should have a data acquisition system or can be connected to data logger to record the data in the computer. 2) I need to change the flow rates every time I begin the experiment. The range of flow rate will be between 1 to 5 Lit/min. The flow gas usually contains 25% of CO2. While I appreciate your kind attention, I look forward to hearing from you soon. Best regards Saeb

How do I manually turn on a computer powersupply??

I want to turn my old 480 watt computer power supply into a bench power supply, but I have no idea how to turn the thing on without connecting to the computer. The power supply is a 480 watt Reactor. I heard there is a standby 5v, and will turn on full power when you give it some logic input. Please post. Thx

what would be the best way to remove the algae from the water and dry it?

I just recently made myself a recycled bottle bio reactor to grow algae in, and now I'm wondering what the easiest way would be for me to separate out some of the algae and dry it. I'm hoping to be able to get something fairly dry and dense without having to bake it. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
