Instructable Filing System

Dear Fellow Forum Readers, A while ago, I posted an idea/request asking about the possibility of making the names of Instructable  PDF files conform to a certain standard for ease of filing. I found my own best solution. If anyone can use this idea, please do! What this project does is to add symbols to the titles of instructables which indicate awards and featured status for each downloaded Instructable. I am using a Mac and purchased the app "A Better Finder Rename 9". Within a parent folder entitled 'Instructables Downloads' I created a group of folders with the symbols corresponding to the featured/awards symbols of the given Instructables. For example, if there is one star for an Instructable, I designate that this way: (*). If there is a star and a goblet, it is designated like this: (*+). I make a folder for each of the combinations of stars and goblets and then as I download (I download many at a time) I just save them to these folders. Then afterwards, I use "A Better Finder Rename" to add the designations as a suffix to the Instructable titles. When I want to quickly pick out the most awarded Instructable out of several options for a given project, I can see right away which one is most recognized as excellent. Finally, I made a master Instructables folder with broad catagories within which to sort my downloads, e.g. Electronics & Computer Instructables, Maker & Prototyping Instructables, Gardening & Homesteading Instructables, etc. Now I have a nice library for portability and offline use! Will many people want this? I doubt it. But it makes my substantial collection easy to go through and saves time when I want to look for recognized excellence among many choices of projects. Besides, it's fun and 'therapeutic' for me to idly sort, rename and file these great projects on a lazy afternoon (not enough of those!). Helps me mull what I'll work on next, too. :-) TN

Rename User

Is there a way to change your account username? I don't want to have to remake my one instructable that i made! Thank you, Tyler

Bognor Birdman bites back!

It turns out the previously-thought-aborted competition may be held in Worthing instead, prompting a renaming to... "the Bognor International Birdman competition in Worthing"Read all about it in this Daily Mail article. Just avert your eyes from the caption on the bottom image if you are a stickler for correct punctuation.

Posted file not downloading with the correct file name

Https://www.instructables.com/id/The-Genuine-NES-Bartop/ I attached a NES rom I made to my instructable, and when you click on it it comes up as random letters  with a .TMP extension.  (asdkfj2ljh2l5hkjhlhjaf.tmp).  You can still download it and rename it, but it still shouldn't be doing this. Thanks for the help!

Upload Fault

I can not upload excel files to my instructible. I have tried 20 or more times, closed the browser and repeated, tried another browser, renamed the files but nothing seems to work. I have had this problem before and sometimes after about 2 hours of frustration, the files suddenly upload correctly. This is extremely annoying. Can anything be done to fix this fault ?

Instructable URL incorrect

When saving my recent instructable, one of the pages, specifically the parts list, was lost.. I re-entered the data, but somewhere in the process the default URL for my project became: https://www.instructables.com/id/Parts-Needed/  which is obviously not the title of my build.  It will also title any printed PDF's as Parts Needed. Is it possible to rename this URL appropriately, as in: https://www.instructables.com/id//3D-Printed-Time-Lapse-Dolly/ Thank you.

Instructables HQ on Google Earth

Just for no reason, here is a Google Earth KMZ file for the Instructables HQ. Includes a custom Instructables Robot icon! Yaaaaay! After download, be sure to rename the .tmp extension to .kmz. To use: Download the file, then double-click it to bring it up in Google Earth. To add it to your places: Click the plus sign next to the file (Under Temporary Places). Drag the Instructables HQ file on to My Places.

Greasemonkey script "all comments"

I created a very basic greasemonkey script that adds a "all comments" link just below the normal "add comments" button.  When you click it the page will reload and all comments (up to 2000), not just 50 at a time, will be displayed.  Script simply appends "?&sort;=NEWEST&limit;=2000&offset;=2000" to the end of the URL.  This should making searching through comments with "ctrl+F" much more useful.  Note that the page reload might take a while if there are a lot of comments. I am a copy paste coder, this works on my machine(xp with FF3.5) and my account, you however are on your own.  If your computer explodes and the internet breaks after you install this, I'm very sorry.  When you download this file you will get a .tmp file.  Rename it to whatever.user.js, the only important part is that it end in user.js.  Next, right click on whatever.user.js and choose open with firefox, you can then install it in the browser. Update--Works in Chrome.  Follow the same renaming steps as above, then simply drag it into an open chrome browser window.  Chrome will give you the generic warning, just click "continue" to install.

New tabs.

The new tabs work, but they are counter-intuitive, and not as functional as I would expect. I would propose that the "More" tab be renamed "Community", to give a better indicator of what you will find there. Plus, I suggest that the "Explore" tab include an "All Recent" option, to allow people to see all the latest projects, without having to trawl all the categories to find out. See also: Frenzy's announcement. Goodhart's thread. Steveastrouk's thread. Mpilchfamily's thread. I am also starting to find it bleedin' annoying that a brief drift of the cursor too close to the top of the page means half my screen is covered by the drop-down menu.

(Idea) Offline Instructables Editor/maker

So I have had this idea in my head for some time now, and I finally went and tried it out. I'm always mad when I can't work on a instructable because the computer doesn't have internet, so i decided to try and make a editor that would edit and make instructable offline. I figure that i would gets this idea out in the open before going further because it does need some help from everyone here. I already thought up a way to make a type of file format. I took a zip file, put all the instructable files into it, and then renamed it a .ible file so it stands out as a instructable file. i have attached the test .ible fine on the forum so you can take a look at it(just rename it .zip to view it for now). i have a main config fine called CONFIG.instructable which contains all the basic things that it would need to know about the instructable. it tells it the title of the instructable, where to find the text for the intro, the pics for the intro, and then how many steps. there are then config files for each step. the names are simple, step1.config. in that it tells it the name of the step, what the name of the body text file is, and then how many pics are in it and the file names of them the thing is, this file means nothing if we can work out some way to upload it to instructables in a way that it is recognized as a instructable and loaded correctly. I figure that before I go and try to make a program that will make these files, I should ask if this is even possible. So what do you thinl?

Me likey the new header layout.

Ok you guys, the new update rocks, especially the new header layout, and the profile page featured banners. On the header, when "Contests" and "Community" were right next to each other, I would always click on "Contests" when I wanted the other. The renaming of "Community" to "Forums" and moving it over is great. I always missed the featured banners on profile pages, and now that they're back, I love instructables even more (again!). And the new contest page layout is great. That's one less page I have to wait to load. On the "Awesome prizes" tab, though, you may want to insert some pictures. And I also like the relocation of the search bar. Overall, a very, very awesome update. Nice job, instructables team, give yourselves a pat on the back. You deserve it.

New Editor Feedback

I just used the new editor for the first time, publishing a quick project, and starting a longer one. Short version: I like it. I particularly like being able to edit my images via Pixlr. Rotating and cropping on the fly were ideal. Longer, less-positive version: The "unordered list" and "order list" buttons added neither bullet-points nor numbers.  All they did was indent the text. There is an "intuition breakdown" adding images to steps - when I wanted to add images from my library, I thought I couldn't, until I discovered that the library can be accessed via the "Upload Images" button.  The "Upload Images" button ought to be renamed "Add Images". When using the "Upload Images" pop-up, the actual image upload function did not work.  I clicked the button, and nothing happened - no error message, no wait symbol, nothing. This is all experienced using my desk-top PC, running Windows XP and FireFox.

Attached files - download problems

Hi. Few days ago i posted a question in the "Answer" section: https://www.instructables.com/answers/Arduino-code-download-problem/ I got an answer, where the guy told me it was a problem related to my web browser. I wrote back explaining better the situation (?!)  but no more suggestion. Today I was reading an instructable, i downloaded the related PDF, then downloaded the attached .ino files. or, more precisely, i tried to.... This was the resoult: same instructable, 5 .ino files. When I try to download them (right mouse>save as)  this is what happen: - LCDTestExample.ino   No problem to download it - FPSBlinkExampole.ino  It tries to save a .html page (or it opens a html page....) - FSPEnrollExample.ino  It tries to save a .html page (or it opens a html page....) - FPSGarageAttiny.ino  No problem to download it - FPSGarageDoorOpener.ino  it tries to save a .html page (or it opens a html page....) If I just left click the links, it opens a web page with all the C+ code written continously (no break lines), so I've to "translate" it to an "Arduino friendly" version. If it were a browser problem, I think I can't download anything (but I download 2 files on 5 - same kind of file....) I got same kind of problem even with other instructables and extension (RAR, ZIP, etc...) and oft same behaviour (same instructable, I can download a ZIP but not another ZIP, or similar issues) I'm using Win 7 and Explorer (or Firefox - I've bot, but same issue...) Honestly is not the first time (I'm getting this problem since....time ago), but it's becoming a little bit frustrating Thank you for your patience Andrea PS: Ok, no matter for the fact the downloaded files (this happen always) have "strange" names (I can rename it, not a big deal).

Don't keep rats as pet !

When my brother decided to travel around the country, he has been forced to leave the white rat he kept as pet ... and I've been forced to adopt this little animal.Rats as pets quickly become cute, funny, and show a personality that make them even more endearing ... In other words, "la souris" (the mouse), as I renamed it because I was unable to remember the name my bro gave her formerly, quickly found her place in my home and my life. So, happy end ??No !No, because rats pets quickly develop lot of weird diseases :- dermatitis - mange- bumble feet- cysts- tumors- etc- and various infections and self-injuries because the rat scratches or bites itself because of one or several of the above diseases. The health and the life of your rat will quickly become a nightmare, and, if like me, you tend to consider your pets like full members of your family, your rat pet will become a great source of worries ... and if you're not cruel, you'll be forced to give an end to its agony. Because that's a real slow and cruel agony. Most people who adopt a rat as pet seems not to be aware of all the problems this little animal will have, neither how expensive it will be to look after it.The internet is full of sites dedicated to the diseases of rats pet. My advice : If you love pets, don't adopt or give a rat as pet !20080225 update :Despite what I said, if you still want to adopt a rat, then, you should better document yourself a lot before commitment.Member Please wrote a tiny instructable about How to take care of a rat the right way. She is a breeder, so you could ask her as much questions as you need.20080226 update :She also wrote two other very useful articles :avoid bad diseases for your pet ratfun games for your pet rat

How To Get Music From an IPod (all models)

Here's how you do it. 1. Hook the iPod up to the computer. If iTunes pops up and asks you if you want to replace anything, say no. You can hit ctrl-shift-esc and go to processes, then close the iPodService.exe to get you more time. 2. Go to My Computer. It should list the iPod as whatever you named the iPod (like Joe's iPod). Click on the drive. 3. You should see some folders. If you don't see one named iPod_Control, go to the Tools option at the top of the window (its on the bar with File and Edit). Click on the "Folder Options" selection at the bottom. When that opens, click the View tab at the top, then scroll down the list and choose the "show hidden files and folders" button under the Hidden Files and Folders folder. The iPod_Control should show up. If not, go to the address bar and type it in. 4. Under iPod_Control, you should see a Music folder. From here, you can either copy the whole folder and paste it somewhere on the computer and put them in iTunes later, or you can find songs. If you do a search, you should be able to find songs by putting in what to search full under "word or phrase in file". If you want to put in music that will play in the iPod directly, you're going to have to go into one of the folders in the music folder (usually like f00 or f01 or something), find a file (usually with a random 4 letter name like MLKJ), take the song you want to play, rename it as the song you're replacing, then copy and paste it in there. Usually you want to reaname the song you're replacing first, then find it later. If you want to make sure you don't replace something you want, view the folder with details, right-click the top of the window in the bar that says "name" and check Author or Title. This will show what you're replacing. 5. If you want to put music on the iPod but don't want to have to lose anything, your best bet is to take the songs you want, put them in a folder on the iPod, and take them back to your home computer, add them to iTunes, then put them on your iPod. 6. To add songs to iTunes from a folder, go to File, click Add Folder, then find the folder you want and go. It automatically keeps the names and usually the album art with the songs. :B-Rad

The team would really like to focus on the gameplay, story, and all the cool places, items, or weapons to discovered. The main sword can be altered many times (shapes of blades) which will give that certain sword an effect like extra damage, fire, ice, more magic, and more. How about getting to name your sword? Tired of using your sword and want to shoot something with a bow? maybe a blow gun? Well switch to first person and fire away! Selling treasure. Reading books to find short stories or VALUABLE information. Don’t forget the easter eggs.. There will be more features listed in the future. This game will be free for everyone.
