I'm searching for free plans for a cannon

Hey everybody, I'm searching for free plans to build a cannon. Why? because I've seen the video of the mini cannon and I want to make one to. The size of the plans doesn't matter(as long as the proportions are right of course), cause I probably gonna resize them any way. I do prefer if the measurements are in meters and not in inches. Futhermore I would appreciate guides and tutorials about cannons and how they work. Preferable cannons of napoleons time.

How To Repartition Hard Drive? Answered

HI! Well, the story is I dual boot Ubuntu 10.10 and Windows XP. The XP partition has 5 GBs free and the Ubuntu partition has around 2 GBs. So I want to transfer about 2 from the XP partition to the Ubuntu partition because Ubuntu is my primary OS. I have looked into this, but the directions have not been too clear. Could anyone help me out here? I would like to use some linux based partition editor to do this, but I really don't know how and don't want to try anything for fear of destroying my data.  P.S. Partition Magic has been discontinued and is no longer available. Thanks!

Optimal size for images to eliminate resizing

Hello, I have some diagrams that I drew in Inkscape to include with an upcoming instructable, and I'd like to upload images that won't be automatically resized by the instructables website, to preserve the clarity of the text. Does anyone know of an optimal size for images so that they won't be resized by the website? Thanks, mat_the_w

Robot having trouble resizing gifs?

I just noticed that the title gif for AndyGadget's Piecax the poltergeist has lost quality when resized by Robot. The large and medium ones which haven't been resized appear fine but the small and thumb ones have been degraded. I wonder if this is an issue for all gifs? I wouldn't know where to look for others, this one in my CD ible doesn't seem affected but it's just black and white unlike Andy's image which is more complicated. But then... I uploaded this one and it and it has the same problem. Where robot hasn't had to reduce the size it's fine, but when it resizes (small and thumb) some errors are introduced. Free multiple photo resizer software? [FOUND]

Hello Instructablers! As my internet is very slow, every time I want to create an ible, I have to resize all of my pictures to 800x600 manually so I am looking for a software that can resize multiple pictures to resize a whole picture folder but that is able to save a copy that is resized and the original one. Anyone knows a free software that do so? Thanks in advise. EDIT: Thanks to Downunder35m for suggesting me Irfan View, It really works well! :) I'll now be able to make more instructable tutorials as I won't have to resize all the photos manually! :P Electrospark

How makey "wrap around" bg/banner in blogger? Answered

I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure out how to do an awesome background/header in Blogger that rolls beyond the width of the columns and doesn't get off-center/out-of-line with the blog content when the browser is resized.  You can see the problem here: The blog isn't done or anything.  It's just an example of what happens the browser is resized, and it bothers me a lot. I don't know if the column code needs to be adjust or the background code needs to be changed or what.  I'm not good at CSS, and I don't know JavaScript, which blogger allows. I'm attaching a rough idea of what I'd like to be able to do.  Les sigh.

Image Comments Are Not Sized Properly

I've been having trouble with image comments not showing up the right size in my instructable, How to Build a Spark Gap Tesla Coil (link). In step 2, this is especially visible as some of the image comment boxes appear to be larger than the images they are posted on! The comments are supposed to be the size of the image, not smaller or larger. I've tried resizing them to the correct dimensions, but it doesn't work. Is it just my browser, or is something else going on? What can I do to fix this? Thanks! Xellers

Comment boxes keep moving? Answered

Hi!  I'm currently writing my first instructable, and I am trying to comment on some of the pictures, however, on some of the pictures the comment boxes keep moving to a different spot and resizing whenever I am in full preview mode.  It isn't on all of them, but it is pretty important to have these comments in the right spot as my instructable is on rappelling, and the slightest error can be very dangerous.  Has anyone else ever run into this before, and if so, how did you fix it? I've already tried moving them in edit mode, as well as the comment edit mode provided in full preview. Thanks in advance!

DXF file sizing/scaling issue.

When a create files to cut with my laser cutter, I create them in InkScape, save them as DXF files, then import them into LaserCut 5.3 Unfortunately, the size of the cut file is not retained. For instance, if I create a drawing of an object around A6 in size, when I import it into LaserCut it fills the A3 workspace. Resizing for simple, flat objects isn't a major issue. However, when item cut at different times have to fit together, or, say, slots are sized to the thickness of the material, it gets to be a time-consuming issue, and sometimes wasteful of materials. Anybody know how to fix this?

I am looking for a bra alternative.

I have heard of chest-wrapping, which is very different from chest binding, where you take a long skinny piece of fabric and tie it in a specific way to create a little tube top to support the breasts and keep them locked in. I have heard of the ace bandage trick but I would like a more elegant solution if anybody has one. So far, I have tried camisoles, leisure bras, underwire, going braless, etc... I do not want to get refitted or resized. I am looking for a non-traditional, non-American solution. Preferably, one that is an innovative solution or native to another culture. Also, a good note is that I'm fairly small-chested and do not have to worry about the "uni-boob" problem.

Can't add images to comments...

I'm having trouble uploading photos in comments both on instructables and on forum posts (these are the only two I've noticed). Adding photos to my own forum topics is fine as I can use the old uploader, but the new one doesn't work. The uploader brings my windows browser up and I can select a file, but then nothing happens. I'm running Windows 8 with the most recent version of Chrome, but don't think any of that's the problem as I had used the uploader recently and had no problems. I'm pretty sure it isn't because of the file size as I waited a while at first, then resized the photos to just a few hundred kb instead. I've tried adding photos to comments on a few different forum threads and instructables but none are working. Clearing the browser cache and cookies doesn't seem to help the problem either. I'd have taken screenshots, but there's nothing to show because nothing happens! lol Hope I've described the issue enough!

Instructables Robot Wallpapers !!

So then i came up with these three designs :DYou can download them one by one or you can download a zip file of all three,I have also put a zip file of the three designs in photoshop format below, this is so you can change it around or resize it or whatever, all i ask is that you keep my watermark in the bottom right and don't claim the work as your own.Tomorrow i am going away for a week so i will have lots of free time, i will create some more designs and upload them when i get back.I hope you like the wallpapersand if you want it would be very helpful if you gave me any improvements or design suggestions in the comments below. Thanks !! =SMART=

Idea for eccentric rotational sealed couple.

I had this idea trying to seal this gaddamned ethanol system. (The vaseline grease gasket works perfectly as long as the shaft doesn't move, after ten minutes of rotation, it starts leaking)For the sake of expedience I'm currently going with a different option, but Ithink this one's actually better and will come back to it when I getthe chance.I don't know how self explanatory the animation is, but basically itconverts rotation into eccentric rotation/motion and then back again.Since the circular housing between the two shafts isn't spinning assuch, it can be sealed with a rubber sleeve. The system is thereforcompletely sealed. I've tried it and it does work, with lowresistance, but tends to wobble a little and the two shafts can getout of phase. I think both these problems can be solved by having two'outrigger' rollers, rather than one as in the animation.Link to animation that hasn't been messed up by instructables resizing it:

Instructables APP for Android (on Nexus 7) - All I get is the intro pictures.?

This topic was originally posted in "answers: technology" I was asked to post it to this forum as well. Synopsis of problem: I had just installed the Instructables App on a Nexus 7.  But, all I saw was the four intro pictures "Explore, Share, Make".  Could not get past these and navigate to the site. I have the 2nd generation nexus 7 running android v4.4.2. Tried tapping the screen, resizing, sliding, and nothing. It would just move between the above mentioned images. Discovered if i logged into the instructables site via chrome, and selected the app to display everything afterwards, it worked.  Basically, it would not let me do anything if I initiated the app first. Once I got past my initial login via chrome I could return to app to login, navigate, etc. and the app appears to work fine.

a TRUE "handmade" rocket to reach the Earth orbit

.while I'm trying to start up a TRUE company (as explained in this Instructables thread) to develop TRUE "space hardware", I ask to myself (and to you) if it's possible to build and launch an hobby/handmade rocket to Earth orbitfor what I know, this goal was NEVER reached, so far, and, only the (well funded) company SpaceX has launched a privately-developed rocket to LEO (at its 4th attempt) last septemberwell, I've a suggestion to have more chances to succeed in this effort: just develop and build a (true working) SCALE-MODEL of an EXISTING rocket, insted of trying to develop a new rocket from zerothe "existing rocket" to scale-down could be (e.g.) the SpaceX Falcon-1 whose specs you can find here:, a resized "hobby rocket" (but able to reach the Earth orbit) could be 1/20th to 1/50th the full-sized Falcon-1 to send its second stage and a small (Sputnik-like) 20-50 kg. payload to LEO.

"Bug" - Issue with image importer converting .PNG files to .JPEG

Update: posting this topic further illustrated that something weird is happening with how Instructables handles images. The image as shown above shows both left and right sides with the text blurry. If you click on the image, the left stays blurry (as it should because it was) whereas the text on the right shows clear and sharp. I give up on the root of the problem, but it's frustrating how the image quality gets messed up.I put "bug" in quotations since you never know if it's a bug, unintended side effect, technical limitation or external problem. I'll let Instructables be the judge. Regardless, I thought it might be worth bringing attention to since I'm probably not the only one to have experienced it.While I use RAW images converted to JPEGs in Lightroom for my main project images, which tend to look beautifully, I normally use Canva to design my title images. Mainly due to being able to add text, shapes or any other elements in layers. Canva exports by default in .PNG format, which is probably the most popular image format after .JPG due to its support of transparencies and lossless compression. For that reason it's normally preferred for header images and graphics. I tend to use a ratio of between 4:3 and 16:9 to make things easier for the file uploader, as well as a longest edge of 1024px since that looks like it's what Instructables wants so it won't be resized. Despite trying to make things easy for the uploader, my title images have always been the blurriest, noticeably more so than the rest of the images or the image uploaded. Today I finally did some tests and found out that on import of .PNG files, the uploader noticeably deteriorates the quality of the image when converting it to JPEG, even if it isn't resizing it. A picture is attached as evidence. It seems to particularly affect portions which are highly saturated or text, greatly desharpening it. It makes a good image look like it's been carelessly edited. For the image to maintain its quality, I have to take the original .PNG and convert to .JPEG on my own (Photoshop), and then upload the .JPEG to Instructables (instead of the .PNG). As a user, what I'd optimally like to see done is: Fix the importer to properly support .PNG images without deteriorating the images. It is way too popular a format to not accept. I do realize it might be a Canva color space or other such issue, but it probably wouldn't be limited to that program anyway. Nonetheless, if this isn't possible, I'd be happy for the system to simply not accept .PNG and to throw-out an error message telling me to convert the images on my own and only upload .JPG. That would at least avoid image quality being inadvertently affected. Make available an up to date FAQ page where all information regarding images is available: what formats are natively accepted, what is the optimal ratio for images, what is the optimal resolution for images, to what sizes an image is resized on import, or any other relevant technical image details. I've researched this multiple times in the past and there are a lot of people with the same questions in the forum. Especially when it comes to sizes and ratios (cut off images, etc). Most of the information is from years ago (ex. 2010) and cannot be trusted to be up to date. Up to now I've uploaded plenty of 18 megapixel images when it is unnecessary given that the largest size shown, I think, is "LARGE" size at 1024px (I believe). A place to educate ourselves objectively on this particular site's preferences would be appreciated.Anyway, thought I'd comment this since it was a relief to finally find out the origin of the problem.

I am working on an instructable decoupage project, and it's nearly finished. To make it easy, I am supplying all of the art, but it's about six or seven pages to be downloaded. I took pictures from my old Pompeii guide, and altered them plus used some copyright free clip art resized to purpose which amounts to about six or seven pages. Am not quite sure how or where to do the art  pages in my instructable. They don't need to be seen separately, and the Steps pictures show what you are cutting out. But where do I put them to download? This is my first instructable, so I just need some help. I have designs for two more decoupage projects, all artwork either altered from books or copyright free. I am a professional artist and collage is my hobby, and my favorite home decor projects.  The picture below is my project. Would really appreciate some help getting started. My thinking says that the very first step should be the art to download, but it's all these pictures that don't need to be seen separately.

Using Autodesk Fusion 360 or other package to make Lids and other form fitting parts?

First off, thanks for all the great posts and Instructables, I hope to be able to add to the growing collection sometime soon with a few projects I need to document.   Recently I have been trying to figure out a good way to create form fitting shapes with decent tolerances for  PLA printing.  I am using Autodesk Fusion and Blender using Boolean CGI operations, specifically the  Cut / Difference option. to create a appropriate sized cap.  If you have a peek at the attached image, the top part (red)  was used as a tool to cut out a matching body from a smaller cylinder (blue).  In the real world If these are printed, the shape would never fit together and if you did, you could never remove them.   What I would like to do is alter the bottom half to shrink it's surfaces inward about 0.25mm to allow for the expanding of materials. Every time I've inquired about this on some other forums, the first response Is  'Just use resize' and make the bottom half larger.'  Great idea, but there are a problems.  The inner plate/cylinder and radius walls expand to be too large The height changes, leaving a gap between the two surfaces Any suggestions would be great. I believe there is a path using Differences / Intersect and subtracting that, but I've been failing to find a solution to it.  I have included the Example top as an STL file.  Thanks for any suggestions.  And No this is not for a school project. Just a hobbyist looking to understand CAD.

How to improve !

Hi, I am web designer so I will be specific. These little things bug me but they must drive crazy those ordinary PC users. It seriously degrades the overall user experience on this web ! Here I will point to current problems and show you how to fix it. All following is about EDIT MODE. Constructive critisism, right ? :) UPLOAD IMAGES I know you are using jQuery UI 1.8.11 on this site. Now there is no indicator IF the file uploads at all and/or in case of bigger file/slower connection how long it needs yet ! You have it already in use, when "updating" small progress bar I saw used in images area. Use following it will do miracles: UPLOAD IMAGES AGAIN :) Put buttons SELECT FILES + UPLOAD FILES side by side ! Imagine adding 20 images the upload button goes down. Do not force user to think let alone to do things extra, hide buttons from him ! Thanks. And not to forget ADD there tiny link sor of button to DELETE ALL IMAGES before uploading. What if you choose by accident wrong folder and upload 20 images you do not want to. Sort of CHECK ALL + DELETE function so you can for instance uncheck those you want to leave there. Thanks. CLOSED WINDOW BY ACCIDENT = SAVE This happens. You edit for a while, close window only to realise content is not saved. Could you implement: * AUTO SAVE function after like 5 mins ? * if NOT saved ! = give him JavaScript pop up with "You have unsaved draft. Do you want to continue or save first ?" * IF SAVED = let user close window, no big deal * if saved = add to left small greyish message Saved ... or the button itself * NEW content = button says SAVE NOW * if saved = itself could go grey and have text SAVED = when content changes, turn it orange again ! * the same functionality that GMAIL uses, it is simple REORDER STEP Biggest pain here ! I can have like 20 steps, want to move 1/2 of them for instance. Let us reorder ALL STEPS simply ! Click on the reorder button and offer, let us reorder, offer us small OK button or some function to toggle the "moving" state back to stationary. ADD STEP + vs. INSERT STEP Enlighten me please if mistaken. Do you realise these 2 buttons EACH NEXT to each other do the EXACTLY same thing ? Delete one :) EDIT AREA FOR TEXT The window is too small. Lenghty steps are pain to write and review on such size. Enable resizing handle the same you already have in forums post edit mode ! ERROR WARNING MESSAGES Get rid of those ugly default JavaScript message windows please. Use this and style it to your web orange :) Dear look at screenshots for better reference. Do not let me waste two hours of my time figuring out stuff and writing this post. Thanks :) Best regards -- Krsiak Daniel

Instructable's robot not sending me notifications? and other minor issues/inconsistencies

For the past week, I have not been receiving notifications for questions I have asked, or comments on my instructables. They do seem to appear in the orange board, and I have checked my settings for email notifications twice on different computers to verify it is not just me. I have also noticed that my recent replies to people are not answered or replied back to. Although it is difficult to tell since people to don't usually reply back anyway. So if you plan to reply, and I'll keep an eye out for any notifications and keep the page refreshed, and hopefully reply within the same day, maybe then you (the community who answered) can come back and verify if they did not receive the reply? I wonder if the same issue occurs with PM messengers, Not sure ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Also, I have been having other minor issues with instructables. All these minor inconsistencies make me wish the site went back to the old style, with a "high five" icon and bright neon 'home depot' color scheme. (I wonder how many remember that) Here is a list of what I can think up of off the top of my head; 1) Often, I have to hit the "reply" button twice to get a comment posted. This is annoying because sometimes I will keep clicking reply, and nothing happens, then all of the sudden the comment gets posted 20 times, and I have to tediously go through and delete the 19 too many. This is not a slow internet problem, I literally have to click the reply button exactly twice no matter the connection or computer, then it takes a few seconds to actually post after that. 2) For comment threads which are pretty long, why is it when I click reply from the email, it always takes me to that page where only the very first comment in that thread is shown? It is rather annoying, as I have to click on the instructable or question the comment or answer was posted in, and hunt and peck for that comment to reply too. 3) For some reason, the 'new' commenting system (the one with the black thing that appears after selecting text) does not allow me to right click on selected items to copy/paste. To do that, I either have to use keyboard shortcuts which I never remember, or select and hold the left mouse click button down, then right click at the same time to get the menu to pop up. The old commenting system did not do that. 4) Also, why when I click on comments from the emails to reply, and the page I am taken to to reply, why does that still use the old (better) commenting system? I would prefer everything to use that old commenting system, and have it so I do not have to click the 'rich text editing' every time. Like it was back in the good-old days! 5) To top off the problematic commenting system, I found that the new system does not allow me to select some words, and turn them into a link. I can post the URL, and that will get shorted and does become a actual link. However, I do not like that workaround solution. I prefer to make my comments and embed links directly into my words to keep comments short and sweet. 6) Sometimes when going to the home page, clicking the 'community' button to expect a drop down menu to go straight into 'answers' it does not work and take me to the full page. This is very irritating when on a slow internet connection and trying to see the replies to my questions since the notifications do not work, and you are conditioned to only get to the same place one way. This seems to happen more often when the DSL is really slowed down. 7) Why is it when I submit a question and post a picture, that I cannot add annotations like I can when posting instructables? There is an blank box area on the screen where is seems like a plugin is missing for the picture annotations, though it does work when posting instructables. Also, I wish they go back to the old yellow resizable boxes. I liked those MUCH better than the new ugly white fuzzy-grainy looking boxes which are more cumbersome. 8) Perhaps it is a pro feature, not sure, but why can't we delete or edit comments after they have been posted? Youtube allows that, Facebook allows that, everything allows that nowadays. Sometimes the auto-cucumber will screw up what I post and I am just hopeless when it comes to proofreading. I always miss things that I see clearly after posting. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Hopefully these things will be addressed, it would make the site much easier to use altogether. Especially the messy commenting system which seems to have become REALLY fragmented and broken from the years of updating. EDIT: There is further discussion at my original question on the question page here. I forgot to include this at the time of posting this bug report:

An open letter to the support and those running this website

For a few years now good people using this website tried to make suggestions, make requests or just attempted to provide helpful feedback and bug reports.Severe bugs are usually dealt with promptly and I like this very much. For everything else though at least I start to develop a feeling that tells me your end either does not listen or does not care.Users are what keeps this section and website alive.Users provide the content that allows you to place ads to make a bit of revenue.Users fill your servers with their ideas.Users are those you should help to have it easy and enjoy being an active part of the community.I won't repeat the things users stated or requested thausands of times already. But I do state that at least got enough excuses and promises over the past few years to think I am being taken for a ride. You state the users are highly valued - valued as what exactly? You suck in user's creations like a vacuum cleaner and promote it all through endless numbers of sponsored contests. You create volume and website hits only.Quality was reduced to forcing restrictions and often totally useless standards on the user. There are articles explaining what a successful Ible needs and how to write one so it fits into the greater picture here. But where is the information how to embed pictures with the text? Oh right, that would be too nice for someone doing it or reading it, so we just plaster a block of images in a meaningless location on top of the text...I was a forum admin for a few years and if there is one thing I learned from it than : Don't mess with the users by "improving" things....Sadly Instructables never got that experience and we saw a lot of "improvements" that really absolutely no one using the website wanted or needed. The storm from that again showed how badly the user is neglected here as even reverting back to something close to what worked before took many months. The request to have some sticky postings informing the user about progress and what features might come soon was rejected again and again.Although I realised the offical suggestion to rework my last Ible so it can be published was a mistake:It highlighted the expectations you have when it comes to how you want users to create their Ibles.Creativity is not just the project in question but also how the creator wants to present it here!!I call it censorship if a person is forced to comply with standards that no one needs nor wants. We get excuses, we get promises but we simply never get anything that actually helps the user to be more creative and have it easy to create posts and Ibles. How long was it until we at least got a half working sorting option in the community section? About a year or so?You want more and better Ibles, a functioning community section again, even more revenue?Well, then give the user what they want or at least what they need to be creative again.Talk to the boss and tell him or her that we need more coders or preferably a new platform for all that actually works and is not just patchwork.Take a look at forums, blogs or other community websites that offer postings and content.See what is possible and what users create, how they create it.Search through the endless numbers of complaints here to find what you missed again, again and again.Instructables won't lose the ongoing supply of new Ibles thanks to contests but as said, volume and quantity is not quality of content ;)A user who is left struggling year after year will give up one day.Users who realise that it is not worth it won't come back after their first and only posting in the community section. And well, someone who created a really outstanding Ible for a contest and does not even make it to the final rounds might never bother again. Why is there no "open system" for contests?Anyone deciding what Ibles make it through should be open about it, post it and allow users to suggest entries he or she might have missed.Even more so for the winner selections. How many votes? What exactly made it a winner? Was it promoted by featuring it or listing it elsewhere?I don't know about you guys but even in a schools science contest the winners will be announced with some meaningful words why they actually won....Sadly, right now, I only see taking, restrictions and ignorance for the user here. The few posts from the support are highly appreciated but only a drop of water onto a red hotplate.Just for imagination:I took tons of pictures detailing my project right from the start.I took a lot of notes while creating it.I am ready to create a great Ible with it all so everyone can build or create it, I want to world to know about it.Then I click on the button to make my Ible and am greeted right away with an image uploader....Dumb enough I upload all my pics in one go.I start writing, I want to include a picture with the text so the user knows exactly why for example that screw needs to be done exactly like the picture shows. But wait...I can't drag the image down from that studip bar.Instead I am forced to create a new step for each picture that has a pecial meaning or purpose.Making a list of parts?Well, lets do it manually and by wasting precious time because there is not usable listing option anywhere to allow the creation with bullets or similar.Oh well, several hours later than expected it is time to take a preview of my creation. The images are clustered up and in no way usable to floow the text, so I start again, add more steps, drag it out even more.In the end I have about 50 steps for something that was fine in MS Word on a few pages.....To finnish I just need to somehow figure out how to get my cover images to fit into this tiny box.Cropping, resizing, again and again only to realise I might have as well used the thumb image IrfanView created in my folder...Then I do the final check.I try to make sense of the unplanned order of things and that no images makes enough sense because I need to click back and forth between steps all the time to undestand it.Then I take another look at my MS Word printout and the Ibles lands in my draft folder. When a suitable contest comes along I might try to check if the editing options have improved enough to post it.Well, I now have more drafts than published Ibles...Now imagine I would not be the only one....
