Headlight Restoration on the cheap.

How to restore your dull plastic headlamps to like new, for about $4.00 (if your lamps are dirty on the inside, that is a whole other instructable): Step 1 - Wash the headlamps with common dish soap and allow to dry thoroughly, this will remove the dirt and oils from the lamp. Step 2 - Using regular rubbing compound or silver polish (I used Silvo brand silver polish (about $4.00 a can here in Canada), it may work with copper polish as well) Apply a small amount of compound or polish using a soft cotton cloth (an old t-shirt or sheet cut into manageable size) gently rub the lamp in a circular motion (the amount of pressure is determined by the severity of the dullness, you may need to repeat the procedure more than once) allow the polish or rubbing compound to dry to a haze, usually by the time your done both lamps the first one will be ready to perform the next step. Step 3 - Using a clean dry cotton cloth buff the lens to remove all of the haze, if the lamp still looks dull repeat step 2. Step 4 - Once you are satisfied that the lenses are as polished as they will get, wax both lamps with a high quality auto wax, (a wax containing carnuba is the best) Mother's or Maguires works great. The wax will prevent bugs, dust and dirt from sticking to the lamp and it will retain it's clarity for a long time, if the lamp starts to look dull simply apply a new coat of wax. Step 5 - Stand back and admire your newly restored headlamps - you will be amazed at how much further you can see at night. *The attached photo is of my headlamp on my 1998 Suzuki Esteem - The before picture is from another 1998 Suzuki Esteem, my lamps were almost as bad as the one pictured here.

Arp Odyssey 1975 Help

Hello,  I recently found an old arp Odyssey from 1975, however it does not work. I have tried to clean the sliders because they were really junky and I tested the power supply and I know it outputs 15v and 5v, although I think its supposed to be -+15v. I really like to do electronics and I just need some pointers on what I should focus on what might be wrong. Thanks

Restoring an old charcoal iron

Hi guys! I found a beautiful charcoal iron at a flea-market and grabbed it up without giving it much thought. Now I have no idea how to bring it back to it`s former glory. The base is iron, and pretty damn corroded iron at that. The good part is that it isn't chipping. The bad part is that the whole thing is orange... The handle is made of wood and there's no way that I can see to take it off. Any ideas?

restoring ovalia egg chair

I am trying to restore an original thor larsen ovalia egg chair for my game room.  i have stripped out all of the old worn out fabric from the interior down to the bare rough fiberglass.  i'm trying to adhere fabric to this rough fiberglass using spray adhesives with little success so far.  i have tried using 3m super 77 adhesive and also misty foam and fabric adhesive.  my test piece of fabric pulled off easily after letting the adhesive set up for over 24 hours.  i'm wondering if anyone has some ideas on this process of adhering fabric to fiberglass that i may be missing.  i've looked for info on restoring a piece like this one and have come up short so far.  so any info or ideas of things to try would be welcome. thanks!

Restore an old steam trunk

This is a quick CALL FOR HELP regarding the restoration of an old steam trunk. The idea is to convert it into a stylish coffee table and storage space and I could really use your suggestions on how to strengthen it's construction and embellish it's exterior. With your help I'll go forward with the plans and publish my progress here. The timeline is also important since the trunk occupies considerable space in our little apartment, so ideally I would like to finish all the woodwork within the next couple of weeks (until beginning of May 2012). The exterior and small touches could wait. HOW I FOUND THE TRUNK I found the trunk next to our dumpster 2 days ago and I just couldn't believe it - Who would throw away such a beautiful thing? - Was I such a good boy that Garbage Santa gave me this gift for Passover/Easter? I hauled it to our flat - my wife asking me what did the cat drag in this time.. (she just loves it that pack our home/car with stuff I find) she couldn't believe her eyes when she saw it. Since we live in a flat with almost no storage space it's very difficult to put together all the needed materials for this project, plus, I insist on doing it with recycled wood (what I find lying around) so to minimize costs. Requirements: @ The trunk should be sturdy (kids might climb on it at some point, ~20kg on the lid). @ It will probably hold a big pile of magazines (10 - 40 kg on the bottom), pillows/blankets. @ I want to add 4 or 6 casters to the bottom so it'll be more mobile. @ I think there should be additional internal support where the leather handles are so when they're pulled I won't be standing with one side of the trunk in my hand. Materials: - Wood - I currently have a solid pine wood dresser in my car, ready to be disassembled for it's beams (?) - OSB - there is some around where I work, 10mm thick. I'll try to find any more materials you'll suggest. Tools: - Drill (and screws) - Glue gun - Staple gun - Carpenter's glue - Hammer - Oxalic acid - Will need to finally buy a Gigsaw.... Trunk internal measurements: Length - 980mm Height - Box - 485mm, Lid - 105mm Depth - 559mm The trunk's side thickness is about 7-8mm made of ply wood covered with black leather. I has seen better days, but it's in relatively good condition. We were thinking of gluing the black surfaces with some sort of bright colored wallpaper (leaving the black leather lining with pins visible) so it would give it some sort of lightness - less bulky. I was also thinking of maybe gluing some sort of fabric with a cool vintage design, but it seems like a lot of work making it look good, stretched with no wrinkles, excess glue... plus it'll probably gather a lot more dust than a wallpaper (I'm allergic). There are two issues that concern me: 1. A fear that this current design isn't strong enough for a clumsy family. 2. I want to attach the corner supports and lid OSB without needing to drill the exterior (too much). I thought of using a lot of glue, but I'm not sure it's the best way to go. What do you think? I'm also attaching this design in Google SketchUp.

HELP?! I need some advice on chair restoration!

I have spotted this chair in a charity shop, I have been looking for a similar style to this for my flat to restore/up-cycle. I plan to either have the cushion restored or to recover in a soft furnishing for a different look However... I am a total novice to this kind of this so I was just wondering: 1. What I should pay for a chair like this, in this condition? 2. How much would it cost to reupholster both DIY & by a professional? 3. How much it would be worth when finished? Any help and advice given would be much appreciated, as I really am unsure! Thanks!

What is the best way to restore this glued together box? Answered

I found an art box at a thrift store. From the logo and wood, I'm guessing it's from the 50's or earlier.  The finish isn't plastic. The joints are loose and the top piece is coming away from the sides of the lid.   What are the steps for putting it back together?  Gluing and clamping comes to mind, but how does one get the glue into the cracks? The partitions are glued in. The partition spaces aren't ideal. Is there a fairly easy way to un-glue them so they could be rearranged?

Battery still usable?

So I had this old power pack my cousin gave me in perfect condition but it had been left for a long time uncharged. So I took the battery out and put it on my charger which automatically went into restoration mode and attempted to desulphate the battery which was sulphated. I did many cycles like this which worked and got it to hold a charge quite well but still not where I wanted it at so I took the main cover off and then the little rubber ones inside and topped it up with distilled water. But I forgot to dump out the excess water after I let the battery absorb it and just went ahead and put it on the charger. When I checked on it all the little rubber caps had blown off and it seemed to boiling inside. So should I scrap the battery or try to resurrect it?? I assume it was probably a lost cause from the start but I don't know if I can find a battery like it or not so Id like to save it.

Ideas for restoring a steamer trunk on a budget?

I acquired this great steamer trunk today with the intent of turning it into a coffee table/storage trunk for my growing collection of jadeite glassware.  However, I was so excited about finding it that I didn't inspect it as closely as I should have, and as a result, I've now got a very rusty steamer trunk on my hands - in some places the rust got so bad that it ate through the metal entirely, showing the wood beneath.   Now, as a college student, I simply just don't have the budget to get it professionally restored, and I'm okay with that; I'm looking at it as more of a stopgap than an investment.  But, I was wondering if there was something else I could do to fix it up?  I considered stripping off the remaining tin sheeting and using a rust-stopper on the hinges, etc, priming the exposed wood, and then simply painting over the entire thing. Any suggestions, tips, etc, are very much appreciated!

How to apply a brushed on wood grain on our painted baseboards.?

I am restoring the wood trim in the hallway of our 1850 greek revival plantation manor. The baseboards, door frames and doors have been stripped with a heat gun and there are areas where the original brushed on (painted?) grain sample is visible. I want to reproduce the look. I tried using glase and paint and did the riser baseboard on the stair case. I used a comb and it just doesnt have the right look. I m worried that when i get to the intricate door frame which is approximately 6" wide, that the comb will be too difficult to give the right look. I need to have advice on type of paint/varnish/stain to use and what kind of brush to give me the right look. I would contact a professional, but there is nobody around here that knows what I am talking about.

How do I strengthen the back of a paper hanging scroll painting without damaging it further?

Hi, I have a beautiful old hanging scroll form Japan. It wasn't expensive at the time, probably because the painting on it seems never to have been finished by the artist, but I value it highly. The paper itself is crumbling in some places and I would like to somehow attach a backing (I was considering cloth of some kind) to that the paper won't eventually rip when the picture is hanging.  What kind of adhesive should I use to attach a light fabric to the paper that won't eat away at the paper from the back over time? any other suggestions, i.e. alternatives to my fabric idea, are also very welcome. thanks in advance.

Starry String Lights?

Hi all, first time poster, hoping I am putting it in the right spot. Last night my wife brought home these awesome "Starry String lights" from Restoration Hardware (http://www.restorationhardware.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1730031). They look fantastic in the house, but she tells me they are REALLY expensive per foot. I was wondering if anyone out there in the community has ever done a DIY version of these lights and if so, would you mind sharing your technique? I would love to string these in several locations but don't want to pay the outrageous price for them! Thanks in advance, Jake

How to remove old adhesive from Bakelite plastic? Answered

Recently put back in to use an old Northern Telecom rotary dial telephone.  It works awesome and ironically it has the best sound out of all my phones, huh..  Anyway, the case is Bakelite plastic.  On it was an old label that had its phone number, contact info, yada yada yada...  I peel it off, but under neath the old adhesive made the plastic look matte, as opposed to the original glossy black that the rest of the phone has.  Any idea as to solvents to gently break down the adhesive, yet not effect the old Bakelite plastic?

How can I practice to restore and preserve old artwork? Answered

I have recently acquired a small (6"x 8") original oil painting that has been a family heirloom for a while now. As far as I can tell through research and artist signature validation, this piece is more than likely about a hundred years old. It is still in good shape but over the years has developed slight cracking in the paint in certain places and is yellowing from sunlight and smoke exposure from improper protection. While I don't intend on fixing these issues myself without the proper training (which is one of the main causes of the devaluation and ruining of fine art), after searching the internet for any restoration services nearby wear I live, there was virtually nothing available. It was also very hard to find even a few locations that even advertised such a thing. So, I am curious after all this, how does one practice for these sort of skills, short of going to school to study such a thing? I would hope they don't let lay people practice on valuable works of art when they are learning.

Need help with antique brass lamp

Hello All: I found this antique brass lamp and would like to restore it. I'm looking for information on how to clean it up and remove the tarnish. There's the chemical way (for instance, Brasso or others) or the "natural" way (I saw a vinegar, salt, flour paste). Has anyone had any experience with this that they can share? Also, I'm looking at what the final restoration will be. I have 3 ideas: 1. Restore it to it's brassy, original self with a torchiere globe (as in the last picture), 2. Restore it to original but modify it with an RGB LED nightlight in the base (next-to-last picture), 3. Clean it up but give it a steampunkish look by painting it a copper color, adding Edison bulbs to the 3 armatures, and maybe some etching on the globe. Any other ideas? Thanks, Kevin

Computer Model: eMachines E3042 (Desktop PC) OS: Windows XP pro Anyway, a few days ago my brother got a new notebook so he gave me this eMachines tower thing. But, it was full of junk and the Internet was slow but working. So I inserted the 'Windows XP Pro' CD and installed it on top of the previous one, (im not too sure if it deleted everything). And after the wipe, I tried to get on the internet but I had no connection, I have tried going on control panel and playing around but nothing. Also, I have tried going into the 'Network Connection' folder and there was one that only works using a wire. Now, I am using the wire (to type this) and that would be fine too use, If my room wasnt upstairs. So has anybody got a solution? Thanks Lewis

Unjailbreaking Help

I have a 4th generation ipod touch that is jailbroken. I jailbroke it by using redsnow. Some of the apps cash now so i can't use them, and its a little slower than usual. So, i've decided to unjailbreak it. If I restore it on itunes, will it go back to normal? If I restore it and put on the backed up data, will it include all of the save data on apps, bookmarks on safari, contacts data, and other stuff like that? Do I need to uninstall redsnow from my computer before I restore it? Is there anything that could happen that could possibly make my ipod forever unusable and broken? And does it take a couple hours for it to restore and put on all of the back up data, because I have about 28 gigs of stuff on my ipod? Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm just really concerned that if i try to restore it, something will happen and it will just be a $300 paperweight. Thanks in advance to anyone who can answer these questions.
