Instructables at school; MORE information needed.

Since publishing my last Instructable, the subject of filters and blocks has been cropping up. Some schools, it seems, block or filter Instructables for a variety of reasons. If you are a student or staff member in any level of education, could you let us know; Where you are (country, state, county etc) What level of establishment you are trying to use Instructables at - primary, middle, high, university What you are (staff, student) Whether you can access instructables at school If not, do you know why not, and where the decision to filter was made (school, county etc)? Are there different filters for staff vs students? Anything else that might be useful. If you don't feel comfortable revealing this information in public, please PM me - names won't be included in any summary that gets put together. UPDATE: The site now has FaceBook logins - has this affected the filtering at your school? Plus: If you are a teacher, do you use the site for / at school? If you are a student, do your teachers use the site?

Do you think this is fair?

So I have 2 friends who got in a fight about a week ago, after school, and off campus.  Someone videoed it, and put it on their facebook account.  One of the fighters got suspended for school for a week for the fight, despite it being after school, and not on campus. Do you personally think this is an unreasonable punishment, or is it?  What do you think of this situation? I want to hear your opinions here, and encourage a good discussion.

How many times have you changed your major?

Or, if you're out of school, how many times did you change it during school? At first, I thought maybe I'll do biology. Then it was CIS. Then I thought hmmm... English. Then Psychology. I've finally ended up in the Health field and I love it. I was going to do Public Education... but it seems quite unattainable now and I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed. I don't think it's something I can do while working full time. Plus... I'm really not getting along with my epidemiology classes. So now I'm leaning towards being a physical education teacher or a personal trainer. (Exercise science.) And yet I would still rather spend my time building things. :P

World Studies Project on Steam Power

I'm doing a project for school on Steam power... It's origins, it's applications, the reason it died out, the future...Blah blah blah. Along with that, I will be building some small working models, a hero engine, and a piutt putt boat. I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a beginner that would look nice and actually move? I have minimal building skills and funds, so i'm really looking for simple ideas. Thanks, James P.S. Any one realize the projectile potential of steam power? Real simple... Empty wine bottle, bit of water in bottle, cork it off...Need something more than tea candles i'd imagine...Could be fun! (I'm scaring my history teacher:D)

Any suggestions for colleges to help me advance a career in film/editing?

This is more about my decisions later down the road in life than it is my current interest in editing and filming.  I've been doing some research in colleges that will help me get a major in film and video production and I've narrowed my choices to a few.  I'm not going to list them here, since I want some community input on this and I don't want the response to be biased based on my list.  What colleges do you think will give me the best, most hands-on, most fun education in this subject, as well as be the best for when it comes to getting a job in the industry?  I can do as much research on this as I need to, but what I think matters to me the most at this point is other people's opinions.  I'm more likely to try or consider something if friends recommend it, and you guys are always a thoughtful community.  Thanks in advance!

Instructable blocked at my school

Instructables is blocked at my school. I had it unblocked at one point, and since then it is again blocked. How do I convince the higher ups, principal and IT personnel, that this is a website that the school should be able to access. I teach at a school that teaches high school age students trades like welding, culinary arts, carpentry, graphic design, automotive technology, machine tool, metal fab, masonry, business, nursing, agriculture, and cosmetology. I think I hit all the classes. Instructables would be a great site for students or classes to showcase their work. Suggestions?

How to Survive School: A Never-ending thread of tips, tricks and (coff coff) comments

We all went to school sometime, right? I bet more than half of you are still in school. School School Schooooooooool. We all hate it. We all know it. And yet, we still go there. It's like death, but without dying right? Yeah. Actually, no. I went a bit over the top, but it's bad. I'd rather be here, making and sharing instructables than there, doing algebra. So, what I'm trying to say is: SCHOOL IS UNAVOIDABLE BUT IT CAN BE EASIER! That's our motto here and we're STICKIN' to it! (Unless someone comes up with a better one. >.>) So, thanks guys! I'll be posting the rules, guidelines and how to become a "School Basher". I'll let you know EVERYTHING. Thanks.

School Website Ideas?

I'm part of a club at school, SECME (Science, Engineering, Computer, and Mathematics Enrichment). We do a lot of things like water bottle rockets, mousetrap cars, egg drop, website design, and more. I'm part of the webpage design team, and I need some page ideas for the website. So far I have the homepage, what we do at SECME at our school, pictures, videos, and external links. What else could I add to the website? There is a maximum of 10 pages. Thanks!

Magazines

I apologize in advance if this is spam. If it is I will remove it at once.OK so my school is having the annual "Magazine Sale" to raise money for our school. Now this year, a previous student, lit the ASB (Associated Student Body) shed on fire, so now the school has to sell even more magazines this year. The most a single person has ever sold is 40 magazines. I plan on beating that record. So if you are interested please forward me the reciept at alecgates25@gmail.com.EDIT: Whoops forgot the link gafundraising.comThe information to fill out is School: Ladera Ranch MSCity: Ladera RanchState: CaliforniaPostal Code 92694

Standing Desks in US Schools

A few schools in Minnesota are experimenting with standing desks in schools. Instead of the typical cramped desk that kids fidget at, these desks are much higher so that kids stand while using them. There's also a swinging footrest to put one foot. The advantages touted are: - More activity for kids, making them more attentive, less fidgety, and more awake - Teachers don't have to bend way down to help studentsRight now it's all an experiment with the kids being studied to see how well they respond to it. To be honest, I'm curious about trying this out as well. Eric uses a stand-up desk at home, but I'd be willing to experiment with a stand-up desk for all-day use. Has anyone else tried this? Link

Is Wikipidea a Bad Source To Use at School

Im a high schooler and my library teacher gave me a disiplinary referal for using wikipidea as a source for a research project, and for refusing to never use wikipidea in school. He gave me a one hour speach on how anyone can edit wikipidea and its all based on the personal belifs of people. So i guess my question is should you use wikipidea for fact's.

Gifts for teachers

It's that time of year again, end of the Summer term, and for a lot of kids it's their last few days in school. #2 Son's teacher runs the school's gardening club, so we bought her a trowel.  He wrote a message on the blade, and I dremelled it through to the bare metal*. What are you (or your kids) making for their teachers? Post a picture here, if you don't mind looking like a teacher's pet... *We also wiped over the bare metal with 3-in-1 oil to slow down the rust, since we'd exposed the metal.

How do I get Notepad up?

Okay. So apparently, my school has figured out how to keep you from deleting the source from web pages so you can use the empty source thing as notepad. Does anyone know any other way to get notepad up? The regular notepad program is blocked too.

My idiotic dad doesn't think my grades are good or at least above average. What do you think?

So yeah, I got expelled from school on the last week, but the school decided to be nice and give me my report card. I personally think I did OK, some of my friends and teachers even praised me for it, but my perfectionist father lashed his anger at me to no end. Check these out:(Note: The passing is 2 out of 6, my school's standards aren't really that high)English: 5 out of 6Math: 4 out of 6Science: 4.5 out of 6Indonesian: 6 out of 6Physical Education: 6 out of 6Technology: 5 out of 6Social Studies: 4.5 out of 6So yeah, I know right, WTF. I even got an award for 6th best 7th grader overall (there are 34 7th graders in my school) on the award ceremony the week before I got expelled. As I said before, my friends and teachers praised me for this, but my dad insists that its very average. I tried telling my dad that this is actually pretty good and I'm one of the best off and that more than 5 kids went to summer school because they failed more than two subjects. But he wouldn't listen and used that stupid don't compare yourself to them excuse to screw out my arguments. So yeah, tell me what you think & any advice on how to lower my dad's perfectionist standards would be greatly appreciated.
