Digital Scope Specs: wfms/s vs. GSa/s vs. Mpts/s vs. bandwidth?

Question say's it all. I understand the concept of analog bandwidth, being that the signal amplitude will be attenuated about 70% at the rated frequency, or something along those lines. I also think I understand the concept of sampling rate, being that the ADC inside the digital scope samples the input voltage level periodically (possibly billions of times per second), and then this gets stored in memory, and displayed. However, then what does the "Mpts/s" figure mean? Is this telling me how many points of the signal can be stored in the memory to be plotted on the screen? how much of this is 'good' and 'good enough'? Also, what about Waveform Capture Rate (wfms/s) I really have no idea for what might be, How it 'waveform' defined? a single period of a repetitive signal, like a ramp wave or triangular wave? Perhaps also a arbitrary wave? What would this tell me? Again, how much of this is 'good' and 'good enough'?

Is it worth dropping $400 on a really nice oscilloscope (Rigol DS1054Z)?

I will describe my situation: I am a hobbiest that likes to make cool projects, and plan to get into maybe RF analog stuff, (maybe start out with making a few FM bugs, reverse engineer a simple video transmitter kit, and a few other things.) as well get into arduino some more, AC analysis (learn about Xformers, power factor, maybe some math, etc.) and I so currently have an old 2ch. 30MHz analog oscilloscope that is a PITA to make real measurements with. Not only is it huge and takes up a lots of space, but also I'm not even sure it is in cal!) I will be transferring into UVA (or maybe VT) for EE, and gone this summer for a NASA internship at langley. (maybe I will be able to take it with me w/ a toolbox of some electronics stuff!) The scope I am looking at (what appears to be what many subscribers seem to use, and/or claim is pretty good) is the Rigol DS1054Z. I only know how to use my $30 30MHz BKprecision scope I got on craigslist from the son of a father who was a TV repairman, and have NO experience with the use of the fancy-shmancy digital scope! What little I know is from watching EEVblog review of other scopes in the past. (I do know that they can be useful for 'capturing' waveforms, and can be set up to trigger on a pulse, maybe a certain digital codes, and that could come in handy for reverse engineering crap.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7v-tFYbc7h8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W2qdtQkBKhc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ETCOhzU1O5A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gStNYfqMXk What sells it to me, being a complete newbie to electronics and digital scopes is that it has a nice big screen, the specs seem good (other certainly think, I have no intuition of what any of those things mean except the bandwidth, and maybe the sampling rate, 1GSa/s), 4 channels, intensity graded display, and it has loads of functions and stuff for me to grow into, and hacking it to make it think it is a DS1104Z is tempting, but I probably will not do that right away. Maybe once I feel what it offered is limiting. The deal breakers is the $400 price, a bit steep for me (cheap for something this good, apparently but still.), the fear that by the time I really start using it, it will be obsolete and the same money can buy some quantum super duper ASIC tech whiz bang 3GHz 100Gsa/s 1GB segmented memory spectacular scope! I am not really sure if it has a source, or signal generator either. Some sources claim that higher end ones do, or certain models anyway, and it seems like the official site say's no. http://www.rigolna.com/products/digital-oscilloscopes/ds1000Z/ds1054z/ That brings me to my next point. Should I also get a decent function generator?

I am looking for a scope for my paintball gun and I need some help. My gun is called the MR-1 and was manufactured by Spyder. I have an 18 inch and a 21 inch barrel for sniping but I need a good scope now. The scope should be 30 USD or under that uses a dovetail mount. Thanks in advance for the help.

How can a choose a spotting scope for my husband when I don't know anything about them.?

I am thinking about getting it for a father's day gift. He would be using it to look out into the fields around our farm spotting wildlife as well as our livestock. I want him to be able to sit and look at the fields using a scope on a tripod. What do I need to know? How do I choose one?

That didn't just happen, did my oscilloscope die!?!? How??? Repairable????

I went to my workbench today to discover that my BK Precision 30MHz analog scope has stopped working. Symptoms: ❶  Still shows a trace ❷  The trace does draw across the screen*  ❸  The horizontal time base seems to work ❹  10x horizontal magnification seems to work ❻  XY mode only draws in the X direction ❼  Waveforms do not show up, for either chA or chB ❽  Triggering seems to work (it causes the trace to draw more/less frequently. No vertical deflection)  ❾   Vertical controls for both channels have stopped working ❿   Dual trace shows only one trace ⓫   I have not been able to do anything to make the trace move up and down, vertical deflection is definitely shot. ⓬   * When changing the timebase, I noticed that the length of the trace horizontally gets shorter, and when a signal is present, or the vertical position for the appropriate channel is twiddled, it becomes the right length, within certain ranges. ⓭    When I was reaching for a powerstrip to turn off power to the lab the previous night, I heard a loud buzz, similar to that of the degaussing on a old computer monitor, but louder. no sparks or anything were visible as I recall. scared the crap outta-me, and I could not figure out what had happened. First thought was that maybe somewhere there was a live mains exposed somewhere that had shorted to ground or neutral. That was quickly dismissed since nothing was exposed like that, and also it would have popped the circuit breaker, and instead would have sounded like a firecracker. This sounded more like a small transformer failing. Also the same day, I have been messing with a tesla coil circuit (my beefed up slayer exciter) and the probes were sitting here by not connected picking up interference. They were in 10X mode, I do not remember the volts per division, however. I do recall a trace being shown on the display the previous day. With these symptoms, I think the issue has to do with the vertical control on the CRT, and perhaps another, separate issue with the horizontal time base control, or possibly triggering. I think I might do a teardown on it to see if there is anything obvious that has failed, such as a charred coil. Then I will need to figure out what had caused the issue. It is obviously something gone horribly, horribly wrong with vertical deflection or something of the like. I will have a look at the schematic and see what I can learn about the operation of the scope. I am glad I do have the user manual and schematics, so it should be straightforward, it is a nearly 100% BJT design. The scope was used and old, and lacked a lot of features, such as cursors and frequincy counters. Perhaps it is time for a digital upgrade anyway... http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00N222I6C/ref=s9_simh_gw_p504_d15_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=desktop-1&pf_rd_r=1VEC8M45MB2T9REXCR7N&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=2079475242&pf_rd_i=desktop

Broken Scope Update: Transistor testing? Replace blown ones with commonly available equivalents? or BER?

So in a previous question, https://www.instructables.com/answers/My-oscilloscope-died-How/ I have stated that my oscilloscope died, and listed the symptoms. Since then, I have popped the cover off, had a look inside, and was I found inside what certainly appears like a "mod," it goes off to the 3 by 3 connector I have mentioned also. I forgot to mention a small blueish purplish wire was next to it, similarly just sticking out the scope. I figure it is a MOD because it is: A) precariously mounted to the transformer with only one small nut on the transformer B) Has so many bodge wires crawling around on it, that it looks more like a cobweb (and w/o silastic or hot glue for vibrations/stress) C) Sloppy soldering and flux residue left behind indicating hand soldering D) The PCB has a very different appearance than the rest of the boards inside; No solder mask, greyish white, and no silkscreened values, parts, or numbers. I traced both the wire and the connector and ribbon cable to the same mod board, which clearly got toasted. There was a small orange wire tangling off that board, it it broke off before I even realised it. Luckily the pictures show roughly where it was connected. Tracing the blue wire back to the board, I discovered it is connected directly to one of the cooked resistors, and I think the other cooked one was in series with it. The only connection found to the main board is the orange wire, and there are ceramic capacitors in series on that crappy looking PCB, indicating it is capacitively coupled. I was Hoping that what had happened was the blue wire came into contact something it was not supposed to, and shorted the output of that chip causing it to catastrophically fail, knocking out power to some of the boards. Unfortunately did not appear to the the case, and the supply voltages seem OK. Nothing appears obviously burned out on any of the other boards from what I can tell. However, just today I have discovered that some driver transistors, which are mounted to heat sinks, are getting unconfortably hot to touch. I suspect they may be blown, by the blackening and discoloration around them on the PCB.They themselfs do not appear to have any physical damage. I will desolder them and connect them to a transistor tester I have to see if they register as operational. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As for some additional questions, can I replace those weird looking obscure transistors with standard ones? I am not sure of their exact specs, the only datasheets I can find for "2SA818" and "2SC1628" are some scanned PDF datasheets that are not in english, and I certainly could not find replacements online for them. I have the gut feeling radioshack is not going to carry them either. :P I hope this is not Beyond Economical Repair (BER), but used analog scopes can be bought used for around $30-$70, and of course I am on the verge of getting something better than that.

I have 2 spring rifles (a good sniper and a crappy assaultish style) and 1 pistol (also spring)... it would be much appreciated if someone could make an instructable that would allow you to make a bipod that does not use tape to attach to gun (folding = happy), as well as a pistol that isnt a pen gone blowgun. add any other improvements also, such as your own scope rings that attach to weaver rails.

Why isn't my ATTiny85 accepting this SoftwareSerial???!? Answered

My code is from the IR Cloud light instructable. I am trying to place a smaller, more abbreviated code into an ATTiny85. Red dot scopes: I cant quite chose Answered

If possible, i would like to know if either of them need a riser mount to clear the m4 front sights

Make an optic close focus.

I want to be able to put my night vision monocular in front of my 2x scope on my airsoft.I need a combination of lenses to put between my scope and the NV to let the scope focus at a couple of inches (instead of 30 feet), and reduce magnification because otherwise I’d just be looking at a tiny part of the phosphor screen heavily magnified.I know it’s possible because a commercial unit is available, I just don’t know if it’s feasible for a guy like me (doesn't have a degree in optics) to build (I'm thinking no, but I figured I'd ask). Thanks for any help you can offer.
