secret boxes

Hi! I'm a letterboxer. I bet a lot of Instructable users know what that means. Every year I host a big Halloween event. I'm already in the planning stages for 2015. The theme is Twin Peaks. Mysterious stuff hidden the woods -- perfect. Anyhow... with the idea of building interest ahead of time I had a brainstorm of riffing on the backstory from the actual show that Cooper had been involved in an ongoing investigation long before Laura Palmer's murder. So I'm thinking of using a blog to put out a variety of clues, logic puzzles, visual things, whatever, that will fall into place at the actual event by allowing people to have access to.... to.... I would appreciate references to your favorite "secret box" instructables...things that you would need some code or something to get into. Thanks in advance....

Secret Pal

So I was thinking, what if we managed to have a sort of secret pal each year around the holidays. Where there's is a random generator that picks names and is given out to each person. Then we would buy a gift for that person ship it off to wherever they live. But there would be a minimum and maximum so someone doesn't send a piece of paper or a laptop. Like $15-20. So what are your thoughts?

Solenoid secrets?

Folks, I recently purchased some inexpensive 110Volts AC solenoid coils from China through eBay (of course.)  As I understand solenoids will convert electricity into linear motion.  I have been unable to do that.  I tried ferrous rods as plungers, they get stuck inside the walls of the coil's cylinder.  No ferrous material like aluminum rod did not work at all.  Can someone please guide me to make it work.  I purchased 110 Volt coil thinking that it will create a stronger field, I don't feel the strengths of magnets to be rather weak. 1. The coil gets hot when energized.  Will it burn out if I keep the solenoid energized for 4-5 minutes? 2. Should I go for a lower voltage DC coil? 3. What happens to the dc coil if energized for long time? I would greatly appreciate your comments. Thanks.

secret boxes for the outdoors

I am looking for designs for "secret boxes" that could stand up to being permanently outdoors, most likely mounted on some surface. As we speak, I'm running some searches here on Instructibles, but thought I should also go straight to the creators. Also... please let me know if this might be better posted in another forum. Kiteman knows a secret!

Instructables is going back into the publishing business! OK, so it's not much of a secret, what with a bunch of people getting emails about their projects going into them, but individual comments are building into a bigger picture: Instructables is following up The Book with a bunch of eBooks - a BIG bunch of eBooks. I don't know the titles, yet, but there are going to be... (counts on fingers, runs out) more than several (in aPub format, maybe Kindle too?).  Did you get an email?  Are you going to be in one of them? If you find out a theme or title, add a comment. Can we work out what they all are before The Powers That Be let us know officially? Oh, and get this - at least some of the several will be free for pro members to download!  Now there's even more of a reason to post a cool project that could get freatured - a helping of free pro-ness would come with a side-order of eBookiness! (K'NEX?  Surely not?) Yes!  They're on the Kindle!

Mechanical engineer David Hu, of Georgia Tech, filmed snakes slithering up inclines, outfitted them in jackets and photographed them through jello to better understand snake locomotion. Secret playroom behind wardrobe

This wardrobe is actually a secret entrance to a playroom. The owner of the house had the wardrobe and figured he might as well add a touch of magic to the house for a pretty amazing result. This reminds me of an apartment I once visited in San Franciso. There were two refrigerators in the kitchen. One was normal and the other was a secret door. Walking through it led you to a dark hallway that ended in a small room with a single chair in the middle and a single lightbulb hanging down over it. Creepy as hell. secret boxes for the outdoors - revisted

Hello, Instructibles gang…. I posted several questions related to “secret boxes” over the weekend. I got some feedback suggesting that the inquiries should have been combined, and that they didn’t include enough information to lead to worthwhile answers. The topics came to mind sort of haphazardly, so I do apologize for the scattershot nature of the original posts.  As to the latter issue, “secrecy” was never the intention… rather, it was that this is all still in the “doodle” stage of planning, and I didn’t have a lot of details to give in the first place. Nonetheless, I’ll try to get a little more concrete - and combine the three questions in the process. I’m a letterboxer. Letterboxing stuff comes up now and then on Instructibles, but for those who are unfamiliar, it’s similar to geocaching (which seems to be more well-known), but with an added, artistic component. Whenever I see “secret boxes” in my regular Instructibles emails I think about whether the designs could be adapted for letterboxing purposes – either “on the trail” or at limited-time events and get-togethers. Naturally, I’ve been looking through my bookmarks and doing Instructibles searches, google searches, etc., but I’d appreciate if anybody might be willing to point me toward some of their favorite designs. I’m increasingly interested in creating boxes that are “hidden in plain sight” – not concealed, but rather “hidden” by virtue of the fact that they look like something else – such as a birdhouse or mailbox – and might in fact actually BE that something else, in addition to being a hiding place. I would welcome any suggestions that the community thinks might fit the bill. Here are some of the preliminary ideas I’ve been thinking about: 1)      Folks hunting the box are told to take a 9v battery, with the snap-on wire leads, with them. When they get to the box they have to put the leads into two holes, where they and the battery complete a circuit. The current trips some sort of latch, allowing a door to be opened. Of course, the door would have to re-latch when closed again. 2)      Something similar to #1 but a little more electronic. Hunters might be given a schematic of a simple Thing that they have to build and take with them. This would, essentially, be a key. I’ve already received an interesting suggestion involving RFID chips. I also got to thinking that a USB connection could be very discreet and easily hidden, and THAT got me thinking that the “key” could perhaps be something on a smartphone… data rather than hardware. I’ve got basically no background in electronics, but I’m fairly good at following directions…. 3)      Pretty much any other contraption where some sort of hidden compartment would be created, which can be accessed through some sort of process that likely wouldn’t happen randomly or accidentally. (I know… could I be any more vague?) The boxes would likely be mounted to something solid - a tree, wall, post, etc. - but I imagine it could be that you take it down, do what you’ve gotta do, and then put it back. And they would most likely be exposed to the elements and would have to stand up to being out of doors. The size of the compartment is entirely flexible…no minimum or maximum dimensions.  And, as stated, I’m a beginner when it comes to electronics – but I am more than willing to learn! I know what I’m trying to describe, but please let me know if I’m not doing well in communicating it to others. Like I said, I’m not trying to be secretive. It’s just that it’s still a very open-ended scheme – not many specifics – and I’m interested in hearing how different folks might approach it. Please shout if you have any thoughts or want more info.

Official UFO files released - the British X Files!

Secret files on UFO sightings have been made available for the first time by the Ministry of Defence. The documents, which can be downloaded from the National Archives website, cover the period from 1978 to 1987. They include accounts of strange lights in the sky and unexplained objects being spotted by the public, armed forces and police officers. One man explained in great detail his "physical and psychic contact" with green aliens since he was a child. The writer said that one of them, called Algar, was killed in 1981 by another race of beings as he was about to make contact with the UK government. why i like electricity type stuff so much.

i have told, like, nobody this before but, one day when i was about four years old, on a boring night, i was in my apartment kitchen with a silverware knife. i then saw an empty outlet in the wall. then... IT HAPPENED. i shoved the knife in the socket, and never felt a single volt of electricity!!!!!!!! from then on, in my mind / imagination, i saw my self as a special person, who could harness electricity. but then, in 1st grade, i met Cole O'Grady. we got into a fight, and i screamed, quote, "I hope u get struck by lightning and go to the hospital and get scarred for life!!!!!!!!". then, during a storm in december, there was severe lightning strikes. then, when i went back to school i didn't see cole for a week and 2 days. when i asked where he was during that time, and i was informed he WAS in the hospital with 2nd degree burns. now THAT, is NOT, COINCEDENCE! that is why.

Secret Message Revealed After Wet

Does anybody know of a way to have a paper with a secret message on it (pretend the message says, "It Rained"), and once the paper has been soaked with liquid (water, or maybe a mild acid or base), the secret message is revealed permanently? So like, if you had a little paper sign out in your yard with the secret message, and it rained, and the paper got wet, when you come home, you would see the dried out paper but with the message revealed. (note, i don't actually care about a "it rained" indicator, just an example)

The secret knock detector workshop door

Check out this great knock detector build by BFarn. It was inspired by the great secret knock detecting door lock ible by Grathio I'm extremely impressed by the design and technique's he used to make his own knock detector. I mean Grathio's detector was already awesome but this one just makes it a beautifull piece of art and also limits the area where can be knocked (which is a plus on security for me). So even when somebody accidently overhears you knock they still won't know where they should knock to get the door open! The Secret Service is Calling Me! Help!!

Hi Friends,Recently someone has been calling me on my cell phone about 3 times a day saying they are the secret service from a private Caller ID. It is someone from my high school. I think they are using a spoof card because the phone number is blocked or the white houses number. It is really starting to piss me off and I need some help. They have called about 7 or 8 times in the last 2 days. Its really annoying. I called sprint to see what they could do but all they said was that I would need to contact local law enforcement to put it to a stop. The worst part is they are not only wasting there own and my own time but they are also working away at my phone bill. So, I need your help. What do you think I should do, contact the local police and get the perpetrator(s) arrested for impersonating a government member or should I try something else such as taking the law into my own hands (phone trap/ back spoofing)Thanks for all your help.Joe Rowley

The secret to storing Loquat for wine making!

If you don't know what Loquat means then just look it up on Google or Wikipedia ;)Mostly used as ornamental trees in the warmer climates Loquat fruits come into season right when the summer is on your doorstep.Although the fruits are delicious and high in nutrients, vitamins and so on: Most people do not even bother to try them :(So if you spot them please give the fruit a try and you might get hooked as did.The biggest problem of using Loquat for more than a direct snack is not the seeds inside. They are quite big and you figure ways out to get around them.Biggest hassle is how the fruits ripen.Unlike most real fruit trees there is fixed time. When the first fruits are ready then the last migh be ready about 3 or even 4 weeks later. And depending on the local wildlife you really need to check daily for ripe fruits....So how to do it properly then?Loquat goes bad really fast no matter what you try.Eat them quickly as otherwise they go off.Don't bother...Those are common answers you get from people who had those trees for years in their gardens. The trick however is really simple:Do not plug them off, cut them off! Some half decent pruning sizzors work great here, especially the smaller types.Cut the stem of the fruit so at least 5mm are left on the fruit.Without the hole from ripping the fruit off and handling it with gentle force there will be no damages or open areas ;)Like that the fruits stay fresh for a few days in your fridge, just make sure they are kept quite loose.Do not just fill a big box with them and hope all fruits survive the pressure ;)If in doubt layer them on soft foam strips or cardboard - works really well if can find complete clusters that are ripe enough. If you have access to more than one big tree you can get enough to even make a really nice wine from it.You need to be quick though, so let me tell you how I do it:Prepare a big enough fermentation vessel, in my case a 25 liter plastic drum, purpose made...Add about 10 liters of warm on prefably filtered water, some sugar and a good amount of your prefered brewing yeast. My personal favourite here is port wine yeast ;)You should prepare this drum once you can collect enough ripe fruits on a daily base.Prepare the fruits by removing the stems, the hard spot at the bottom and then cutting them in half.A small spoon can be sharpened to help to get the seeds out if have some with many little ones hiding.Have a pot with boiling water ready and put about 250 to 400 grams of prepared and cleaned fruits in it per load.A quick heating is essential as you want to keep the cooking time as low as poosible.90 to 120 seconds should be enough to get the heat throughout the fruit - please check every now and then that the fruits are quite soft now. This step is vital to prevent self fermentation - you only want your yeast cultures to work on the fruits ;)Squash the fruits when adding them into your drum.To make a full 25 liters with just a table spoon of sugar at the start you will need about 10 to 12 kg of fruits for a high volume and sweet result. The best option due to the constantly changing sugaar content in the fruits is to go with the flow.Stick to max of about 15 liters per 25 liter drum.Monitor the sugar content and alcohol level.Port yeast dies off at a bit over 14%vol of alcohol.Although some strong ones go up to 18% here...If the alcohol level goes over 10% while the sugar content is still quite high then you add water until you get down to about 7%.If the sugar content goes down too low you add more fruits. With still enough active yeast you can even transfer half oa drum to a new batch once the drum is getting too full and the sugar content is still too high.Just a matter of getting used to working with ongiong adding of fruits and water to compensate the time it takes to get enough ripe fruits.Of course there is always the option to go low and start with 5 liter canisters instead....

Recycling gets sexy with the recycled bikini

Victoria's Secret has introduced a bikini top that's made from recycled polyster and spandex. It's pretty significant in its utter insignificance. Finally, a luxury item can use recycled materials and I hope that we see more companies doing this, but there's only a few square inches of material there. And can they do it without having to make it literally green? It all reads like more of a publicity ploy than any real movement towards sustainability.Patagonia has been using recycled materials for several years and have been making real progress in putting their money where their mouth is. Will others please start following in their footsteps please? Lots of others? link
