The Claim: Coughing Can Blunt the Pain of a Doctor’s Needle By ANAHAD O’CONNOR Published: January 25, 2010 THE FACTS Sometimes there are no words that can comfort a patient who fears an injection or the drawing of blood. But there may be one cheap and easy way to ease the needle’s sting. In the medical literature, it is known as the cough trick. Patients cough moderately just before a shot and then once during it. How this works is unclear. It could simply be a matter of distraction. Or, as a report in the journal BMJ pointed out, it may have something to do with a brief, cough-induced rise in blood pressure that reduces the perception of pain. Whatever the mechanism, studies have found intriguing evidence. Two were conducted in 2004, including one three-week study in which doctors measured variables like pain intensity, hand withdrawal and palm sweating as subjects had intravenous needles inserted in their hands — on one occasion while coughing, and on another with no coughing. Coughing, they found, reduced the pain. In another study, published this month in the journal Pediatrics, scientists at the Mayo Clinic tried the coughing trick on 68 children, ages 4 to 11, receiving immunizations. They found that it eased pain in Hispanic and white children, but not in black children — a finding they could not explain. And like any method, it has its obvious flaws: coughing too vigorously, for example, could cause doctors to miss their mark. THE BOTTOM LINE Studies suggest that a moderate cough during an injection may forestall pain. Pretty neat. Might be a good trick to teach kids so they don't develop phobias.

Hello, This is the first knex gun that I have submitted on this site. It's a single shot gun that fires blue rods. It has a true trigger mechanism, and has a range from about 10 metres (I think that is approx 30ft.?) with only one rubberband (because my dad doesn't like it when I hit the walls). About me, I don't have alot experience with k'nex guns. I'm building them for about six months. I built the_burrito_master's Park and Mepain's Inferno, and a few other guns. This one is the first that I really like. So I thought, let's post it! Please comment, and if you think I can improve things, please tell me. PS: I'm sorry for my bad English. I'm Dutch and only 13 years old, so I have much to learn. Please correct me if I make any mistakes!

This is a knit pattern for a baby blanket or afghan in what looks like a shell pattern. I had the pattern many years ago and have misplaced it. I would like to make it again for a very dear friend who is going to have a baby soon. Thank you for your consideration, Mary Ann
Are there any knex guns that are bolt action and single shot. to load you pull the bolt back, insert bullet, push bolt foreword and turn it. shoot. If you are in the boy scouts you know what I am talking about. It also should look realistic enough.

I am planning on using an Arduino nano (clone or similar) but am struggling to figure out how I can use a proximity sensor or other method to count shots fired... Am not sure if I could use IR, as don't know if it will detect a break at the velocity the BB's will be getting fired at.. When I get something put together am planning on mounting a nokia 5110/3210 in the butt so is visible, maybe a laser range finder etc.. Any ideas would be much appreciated

Here we have a slightly angled pin knex gun. The pin is slightly angled down, making the pin come in the magazine well angled, hitting two bullets instead of one. It uses an internal flexy bullet pusher instead of the external ones. It shoots two bullets 30 feet using two bands. It has a yellow rod magazine that isn't removable. It also uses a unique trigger system. Its comfortable, light weight and is very fun to use. No sights, its just a prototype.

I came across an old basketball shot clock (Nevco SCD-2, from 1987) , and upon seeing it I instantly thought of new years, It would be an epic countdown. Not to mention the immensely loud buzzer that it contains. Problem is I can't seem to get any info about how the circuitry works (the clock thing is pre-interenet). The only input (besides power) is a small plug similar to coaxial that I assume sends some kind of pulse that is decoded on board. anybody got any ideas?

It currently only has 13 entries, but the Mugshot Museum is a website to bookmark and check back when you're bored. This is True collects bizarre stories from the world's news media (there's a newsletter - I suggest you sign up), and sometimes the stories come with mugshots of the perps. The site's author realised that the mugshots were popular, so he gave them their own site.

Hello everyone I would like to tell you about my new weapon system. That uses a easy load mag like Ironman69's. It will come in 4 slightly different versions that will include. The standard version that will have a full stock, hand grip, and iron sights. Then there is the para-trooper version that will have a twiggy stock and will be a little smaller and it will have vertical fore grip and iron sights just like the standard version. Then there will be compact version that will just have a shorter barrel than the para-trooper. Then there is a special forces edition that will have a mock silencer, a longer fore grip with side rails for flash lights and laser pens, and will come with a mock scope. At the moment I do not have a date of release.

It's done. I decided to scrap the shell idea because it didn't benefit the gun at all. It can be easily modded for shells though, it still has the open breach type thing. I finally made a trigger, loosely based off of spider massacre. So now, it's a single shot. It's very powerful. Right now I have it shooting 60+ feet with 2 #64's. It fires grey or red rods. I prefer grey. I'll post it sometime soon. New stuff - -New barrel that uses oodammo (oodalumps' ammo). I call this the lumpy barrel.-Ammo holder for oodammo.

A long time ago, I looked at Mepain's 8-Shot Deconstruction Round Revolver, and I really liked the idea, but as all concepts, it didn't shoot far. Within 20 minutes the other day I had made a small, real-triggered pistol (cock+revolve+shoot) with 8 shots, where the firing pin hits a white rod off of a snowflake connector. This was meant to be a simple revolver for people with few pieces, or who just want a fun gun. At a 45 degree angle, I won't lie, it probably gets around 10-20 feet, depending on the wear and tear of your pieces. It won't win any wars, it is a simple sidearm so you can build more piece consuming firearms. I will have pictures up shortly. Edit: I've improved range by some number, and it is now more complex and piece consuming but more reliable, and the clip design has been perfected. Advantages over guns with magazines: - Never Jams. Ever. - Slanted handle with no magazine inside. No broken pieces or clumsy mag pushers in your way. - Bullets are spread out in a circle. It is very compact, especially if you use green rods instead of whites. - Detachable wheels. This means quick reload if you have extra wheels pre-built. - Easy trigger pull. You don't need a super-powerful rubber band to make it shoot far, so the trigger pull is smooth and easy. - Super easy to build. You don't need to be an expert in k'nex to know how this works. Because it takes up less space and pieces than a magazine, and the clip design requires no rubber bands (unless you really want auto-revolver) this design could easily be perfected and expanded upon to a rifle, or high-powered weapon. It uses one black Y-connector, for the trigger, and I'm sure there's another way to do it, but this is probably the best. I can't find my camera; when I do, I will have pictures up. Probably not instructions because the thing is easy to build from pictures and a pain to take apart, but I'll be answering questions frequently when it's up and posting helpful pictures to anybody who requests it. EDIT: Pictures here> https://www.instructables.com/community/TO67PH4GQ225YK9/. Click the "i" at the top-left to get rid of those pesky annotations.

I was bored today and thought I would get the Fuji film out and take some shots of these cpu's I just pulled out of some towers at the dump, hopefully I can get more soon to add to my collection, as far as I know these all appear to be in working order (nothing better then working art).Anyways I may post more pictures later (this is my 4th F****** time writing this topic, apparently instructables has some rather SHODDY safari support....the cause of my many heated fustrations with this website, so the chance of me coming back later are slim).

So, I've been working on a new shotgun for a while, sort of as a sequel to my first one. I just finished version 1, and will be testing it for a while, and I will hopefully have instructions a little bit after that. Features: New, easier system for loading shells/cartridges True, sliding trigger Decent power (more than the last shotgun) More solid construction Still no mag though :(

Woah - these chaps used a stick, a couple of off-the-shelf sensors and a USB prototyping board to make a real slingshot that will actually control a game of Angry Birds! I believe the "youths" who are "down with it" would refer to the final device as "well wikid". They've even been so kind as to provide full instructions, parts lists and code, just so anybody who wants to can make their own! Kudos, chaps. What would be really awesome, of course, is if they joined us here and provided a proper Instructable... ;-) (Image taken from http://mbed.org/cookbook/Slingshot)

Years ago I saw a plan for building a birdhouse which actually housed two shot glasses and a bottle. Now I would like to make the "concealed" station for a friend. I remember that it had a cleaver fold down hinge that held the glasses in place on a board. The peg where the bird might have stood also did something clever. Can you lead me to plans for something like this?

In Movies such as "Shaun of the Dead" or (lesser known) "Dead Snow", there is a particular technique which they use when filming the scenes where the characters equip themselves to fight the zombies. It combines close up shots of each weapon, usually with someone grabbing/lifting it, in quick succession, with a specific noise accompanying each shot. It's rather difficult to explain, but I hope you understand. My question is, What is this type of shot called? I'm hoping to take Film Studies next year at Uni, and I'm trying to expand my knowledge now. Any help would be appreciated.

I accidently shot myslef in the hand with a bb gun. I now have a .177cal copper bb lodged a few centimeters in my palm, just under my middle finger. Its restricting any movement of that finger and hurts alot. Besides seeing a doctor, does anyone have any suggestions?*24 hour update*Hey dudes, thanks for all of your helpful suggestions. I would go to the ER but I'm deadly afraid of doctors, nurses, dentists, and the like. So, at about 4:45pm (pacific time) today, I attempted to extract the bb myself. first off, I took and hanful of cottonballs and stuffed them in my mouth to muffle the screaming. Then, I went at it with an ear-wax remover I picked up from the local chinese pharmacy................................................OUCH!......................................Unsuccesful.*48 hour update*At about 8:00am this morning, I succesfully extracted the bb with a small wire fashioned into a loop <=========. yeah, sort of like that. Needless to say, it hurt a bunch. It is now 11:30am same day, and my hand is already feeling better (duh). And (though still painful) I can move all of my fingers. The way I see it, I'll be totally healed in a few days. Hopefully.*One Week Update*Its been about one week from the day I shot my hand and I'm happy to report that I am now without pain and Infection-Free. Thanks everybody for all the helpful suggestions. Even though in the end I used my own way of dealing with the problem.

Ok, I want an opinion on which is better: single-shots, or guns with mags?so far........6 single shots, 7 magsarguments to help outSINGLE SHOTPROS-faster to load-get better range-easy on knex parts-easy to buildCONS-you need to constantly reload after every shotMAGSPROS-more ammo-less reloadsCONS-more prone to jamming and misfiring than single shots-take longer to reloadjudging from these arguments, and ones i forgot to mention, which is better?

For a while I have been trying to develop a magazine that feeds bullets from below the barrel. The gun I am modding has a similar barrel to the K'nex Striker Pistol by I_am_Canadian. I can develop one that sits above the barrel however this looks ridiculous and in not all to affective. Any suggestions? Pictures or existing instructables are most helpful! Thanks!
