I once read that technology never dies. There are people today that still make flint knives and start fires by friction. Furthermore, these skills have been passed down generation to generation. To prove the hypothesis, the authors got an old Sears Catalog from the 1890s and picked out two pages of stuff they had never heard of. They found all of them still available for purchase somewhere. Why then, can I not find the Cycle Skates in this 1923 video? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UjtPn4orR9A They were apparently invented in 1870. (http://pedespeed.blogspot.com/2007/07/following-is-from-leonard-de-vries.html) I cannot find the patent info as they seem to be from France. I know in 2004 someone "re-invented" them as Chariot Skates. Anyway, I would like to learn how to make my own 1870 / 1923 style cycle skates. Anyone out there who can help?

Skate was right. Firefox PWNS. I got fed up with chrome. I love it in many ways, but it's just too buggy and slim on features. I'm still using it sometimes, to help beta test it and all, but my heart belongs to another. So I downloaded FF the other day, and am installing addons like a madwoman. Greasemonkey (the comment rater script! No knex! No yarn!), themes, games, rss feeds-it's like a whole new dimension to the internet. It does run better in vista though-still slow on my XP machine. I should have listened to you earlier, skate!

Hi! Just rediscovered my love of roller skating, after 15 years away from it. I am wondering if I should buy a pair of outdoor skates and use them on rinks sometimes, or rink skates and risk them outdoors? I'd check the wheels for rocks before I rode on the rinks, of course. I've never done outdoor riding, but I can't go to the rink all the time, and I'd like to work this into my daily exercise. I'd also like to get into good enough shape to join Portland's active Roller Derby scene. Thoughts?

The animated lighting element in this figure skating costume by ShowOfLight reacts to music by using beat and pitch recognition technology and motion sensor to bring the animation in sync with the performer. While this sounds great, and looks impressive, the video demonstrates how this is one example of technology overshadowing art. Though many of Marina Polakoff's other works integrate soft circuitry with subtlety and beauty, the line of costumes for the performing arts may be too distracting. Consider the lovely ice skating routine in the video that must be performed in the dark. Which were you watching - her salchow or her flashing bananas? (seriously, there are animated bananas) Regardless of my opinion, I'm sure this is one performance the judges will never forget. via: talk2myshirt

Does anyone have any ideas how I could make something that resembles a skateboard or mountainboard truck at home? I want to build my own motorised mountainboard from various parts on the very cheap, of which none will actually be from a board. The trucks seem like the one thing I might have to buy since I can't think of a way to add turning and carving capability to a homemade board. Any ideas would be most appreciated.

Well, I'm a skier, and have been for most of my life. As it is approaching summer here (Australia), I'm thinking about buying a pair of blades. I am just wondering, what are the similarities and differences in handling between the two?

Hello, so I want to get into Slalom. If you don't know what Slalom is, its basically really advanced skating with cones, here's a good example: http://wimp.com/girlslalom/ I have a few questions about skating in general: 1. Where can I get good skates, where/what should I look for? 2. What it more important: Balance, or agility? 3. How can I improve my balance/agility? A few questions for Slalom people: 1. Is there a term for people who play Slalom? 2. Where can I get some good cones? (I've been looking at these, but they're a bit expensive: http://www.skatecrazy.net/products/cones.html 3. I don't have any skates currently, I was thinking of getting Slalom skates instead of recreational skates. I thought this would be cheaper and I'm probably going to end up getting them eventually but I don't know if that would make a difference starting out. I'm looking at these skates if I get Slalom-specific skates: http://www.skatecrazy.net/products/sebafr1.htm I'm eyeballing these skates for recreational skates but I don't know if they would be a good choice: http://www.sportchalet.com/product/300425_3041447.do

I've recently started to build a tech deck skate park. The base is mdf (solid stuff, very heavy), and all the features will be made from wood with metal coping. The base is 36"x16" to fit on my desk. You can track my progress here: chrismccann.wordpress.com Let me know what you think, what you might change, and what you like/don't like. Also if you need any closeups of anything, I've got it saved in CAD and can post any screenshots you guys want. Also, here are a few questions I have for you guys: -The flat rails were easy because they were handles, but how could I make the rail on the stair set? -How should I cut the profiles (out of 1/2" plywood) that will be the shape of the quarter pipe? I need to accurately cut that radius, but I only have a crappy band saw, 1" belt sander, drill press, dremel, and various hand tools.

I have a 73 volkswagen transporter type 2 microbus AKA hippy van and I am planning on painting it orange and white. I was just wondering what the best methods would be and such any advice would be much appreciated. Im planning on just sanding it down and using rustoleum to give it a nice cheap paint job 1. Can I paint the rims as well with this paint http://www.homehardware.ca/Products/index/show/product/I1821684/name/paint_alk_rust_trem_green_3_78l 2. Should I use rollers, brushes, or a spraygun to do it? 3. how would I go about prepping rims for painting?

Ok, everybody's got one. WHat's your most embarassing moment? You know: split your pants, threw up on a friend, toilet paper stuck to your shoe, forgot to cover a hickey- that sort of thing. I'll go first. Today at church (I'm the minister for a small congregation), I forgot and left my cellphone on. "No big deal" you say? My ringtone is David Allen Coe (a VERY "In-your-face" and "offensive in a funny sort of way" country musician). I was just finishing up Sunday school, and getting ready to give my sermon. Then the phone rang, everyone could hear..... "I was drunk, the day my mom, got out of prison...". My wife quickly hung it up (but didn't turn it off). Then it rang AGAIN!! I was looking for something to crawl under. I wanted to die! The church-members all laughed (because they know my sense of humor), but I turned red as a beet. I stepped outside, and returned the call, as we were sort of at a stopping place. I figured it must be an emergency for anyone to call me in the middle of "church". It turns out the call was a church member, who's been out of town for a couple of months wanting to wish everybody well, and see if he could listen in on part of the service. Moral of the story: Get a different ringtone!!! OK, Who's next?

I need three sets(8 wheels/set) of inline skate wheels for a project. I need them to include bearings. Diameter does not matter as long as they take regular 608 bearings. Also they can't be pink/purple. The cheapest I've found is $20/set.

I was looking at some Instructables in regards to EL wire and how to use it on bikes and similar. Some look quite interesting, while there was one using the high voltage generated and stepped up from a stepper motor. So it is is either batteries or risking electric shock - not my liking. I finally got my hands on an old dynamo, output is around 6V and I want to combine it with some EL wire. My thought is to fully convert the bike to run on the dynamo rather than on battery lights. For the EL drivers that run on 3V I will use a voltage regulator with no batteries inside the driver. The front and rear lights should run on rechargeable batteries, but only small ones to provide the juice when stopping at the lights or similar. I am quite good at getting stuff working they way I want to but no so good in putting all of it into a readable and easy to follow tutorial. So I was wondering if there is some interest in some old school mods to get some proper light on the bike (or scooter)? If so I would take some pics on the way and try create something others might be able to follow. Of course like usual I will stick mostly to recycled parts for the project, except for EL stuff that is. Might even include some instructions on how to refurbish a stuck dynamo as I had to face this problem too. Let me know what you think....

I have tons of pairs of Converse All-Stars lying around my house, and I've always wanted to convert a pair into roller skates. Does anyone have any experience with doing this, or know a good place to start? I found a website that was selling them, but they were something like seventy British pounds, which seems like quite a bit. Thanks!

Every day on my way to and from school I have to walk a long way to the bus stop, and i often come too late because i miss the bus. the way is asphalt-only, but there are some small stones on the sidewalk too. I was wondering if I could build a jig attachable to any shoe that had 3 or more wheels on it, so I could skate to the bus stop and not be late. The wheel jig should be able to hold quite some weight because of my backpack and should be able to fit inside it for me to take it to school. I cant take a skateboard or scooter because I don't have any and it's not allowed to chain it to the bus stop and I don't even have a lock or a bike. I have access to the local skateboard shop as well as the hardware store and a Tailor and carpenter too (if leather or string or even wood is needed), and also to the local supermarket. Thanks!!

I've looked around, and I can't find headphone-compatible skatehelmets anywhere. Looking around for an instructable wasn't a succes either. Now I thought that if I couldn't get it into my helmet, why not mod my headphones into a neck-hanging-on-your-ears headphone. Do you guys have any ideas on what I could do? Note: I dislike earbuds, to say the least, so they are not an option.

So, I'm trying to fasten my trucks to my diy-ed skates now, but one of the three bolts of the first truck is looser in it's hole than the other three. When I try to screw the locknut on, the bolt just turns along, and there's my sole on the other end. First mounting the trucks to the baseplate and then mounting the baseplate to the boot is not an option, as there's bolts fastening the plate under the trucks.
