I dream of cheesy

I have just learned that people believe that eating cheese before bed will give you nightmares. I have also just learned that scientists have proven this not true. In fact, earing cheese before bed will improve your sleep and depending on the type of cheese that you have eaten, will depend on the types of dreams that you have. Now, I wonder how all that Cheez Whiz that Tetranitrate has been eating is affecting his sleep. You can't make this stuff up.

Polyphasic Sleep

Now i know there is already an instructable on polyphasic sleep (which is sleeping multiple times a day instead of one time a day like most people do, polyphasic gives you more time to do stuff each day, problem is everyone else is sleeping while your awake), but i was just wanting to see how many in our instructables community are polyphasic sleepers, since i just got a renewed interest in it since a friend of mine has said good things about it. And ya know, tell about your experience with it, worth it?

Did I Sleep Last Night?

Yet another benefit of getting an adequate amount of sleep: a more accurate memory. According to researchers in Europe, a lack of sleep increases the likelihood of forming false memories. However, there are two ways of avoiding this: test subjects who caught up on their sleep debt had a similar level of false memories as those who had not been sleep deprived at all. Or, you can try the classic morning method: drink coffee. They took two more groups of volunteers, deprived them of sleep, and then gave them either caffeine or a placebo in the morning, one hour before their memories were tested. The group given caffeine had 10% fewer false memories than those who did not receive any, an effect McCabe describes as "quite striking."Despite their recent closures, Starbucks must be very excited to hear this news.Take a look at the full sleep/memory article from naturenews. How much sleep are you getting each night?

I want to be able to fall asleep to the sound of the waterfall ~75' away

I want to be able to set up a wireless microphone that will be able to withstand the elements in a northern Maine climate (wind, snow, freezing rain etc) that will capture the sound of a waterfall close to our cottage and transmit the sound with fairly good fidelity to a bedside receiver.  Something that won't eat batteries, or maybe even solar powered (if simple enough) I'm no electronics whiz (clearly) but surely this is do-able?  The power lines come in from the other side of the cottage, so are more than 100' away.  Nearest neighbours are more than a half-mile so the only possible interference I could see would be from our own cordless telephones.  Any takers?

Health Update

A few sundays ago, I fell asleep at the wheel of my car mid-day (thankfully Ellen my wife was with me and I swerved and unnerved her enough to wake me).  Of course I scheduled a follow up sleep study to be done (amazing how booked up they are) and that is taking place this coming Monday - Tuesday.   It will probably result in my "pressure" being upped to around 15-18 on the machine; which is getting high.  Just wanted those of you that know me why I wouldn't be posting Monday afternoon in case anyone noticed :-)

So if that ever happens to you EAT APPLES!  I remember lots of people on here complained about it so I figured i'd post! tell me how it works for you!

Weird-o Dream-o

Wow! I've been experiencing a chain of weird, almost scary dreams lately involving instructables...... It was a normal Sunday afternoon, I go to I'bles, and I read my comment tracker. I can actually read the comments I will get later on in the real world. I kept having these dreams for about a week. Meh, Strange stuff..... Do you have weird dreams of your own? if so, post it here! UPDATE!!!! Another very weird dream! It was a normal afternoon. I read comics. Then, suddenly, strangers started saying gibberish. This was repeated for about 6 times, then I wake up. The first thing I realized is now my penis is " modded " by my parents... I screamed because of the intense pain......

Expriment : Lucid Dreaming #1

.Hi there. For those of you who don't know what's "Lucid dreaming", it's the ability to take the control of a dream by becoming fully aware in it, and to "visit" this alternate reality. (Note : GuyFrom7up made a instructable about an experimental lucid dream machine here )In most of our dreams, we're simple spectators. In fantasy, our imagination has to do all the work.In "lucid dreaming", the "dream world" is not generated by the same aware part of the brain that manages "imagination". The "dream world" is created "somewhere else" in our subconscious. So, becoming aware into this "dream world" is like an immersion into a video-game, or a virtual reality ...It is said that our awareness has the ability to change the content of this "virtual reality", that we are able to "create" objects just by imagining them, and that we can touch and manipulate them like if they were real, etc ...(it would be possible to write books or compose complete symphonies there for instance)I've just experienced my first lucid dream this morning. It was not a frightening experience at all. Thanks to it, I learned a lot about myself. When you're starting to sleep, a lot of random pictures and scenes appears in your mind. Most of them don't make sense at all ... Most of the time, when your brain tries to understand them as they appear, this interrupt them and you wake-up.When they come back, if your brain is too tired to analyse them, then, they "catch you" and you fall asleep. If you manage to "watch" them without interrupting them, your awareness will "follow" them, and you'll become aware into them.During my experience, I noticed something very interesting : My "awareness" was kind of separated in two parts : - there was my bad side who was controlling my "dream body" and acted like an evil entity who had just escaped from hell ................- and there was my wise side who was silently witnessing my other-side doing "evil things" ...(both were into the same dream body though. They were just thinking independently, like if they were no more mixed together, like if they were both "pure" ...)And at one moment, my wise side said : «Come on , look at what you're doing ...»And then, I had the choice to continue, or to wake up. And I woke up.Then, the question I asked to myself was : « who is aware ? »(or in other words : did I noticed, thanks to this experience, that my awareness of the everyday life is, in fact, a composite of two "struggling forces" of opposite nature, mixed together and acting like one in a same body, and separating from each others during the sleep ?)Also, this first experience was very unstable :- it was difficult to remain into this "dream world", because the awareness tends to use physical senses (physical eyes, physical ears, etc) instead of the "dream senses", and the dream tends to fade ...- also, I noticed that the dream was not clear and bright, probably because my "physical sight" and my "dream sight" were mixed together (there was some light into my bedroom that was filtering through my eyelids)That was a very interesting experience. I will try again, with the hope that my "evil side" will calm down a little and will let my wise side explore that inner universe in more serious way ............. =o)

Will pseudo-surgery hurt if I'm asleep? Will I wake up in the process? *UPDATE* The surgery was a success! I added pics, come take a look!

So, tonight my parents are gonna remove a piece of glass that's been lodged in my foot for four years. How I got that piece of glass stuck in there was because I kicked open a glass bookshelf four years ago, when I'm still at the age of ten. I managed to live with it, but just now the piece of glass suddenly emerged from my skin. I tried removing it, but dang that was painful. So my parents decided to remove it when I'm asleep. Now, the question is, will it hurt at all? Will I wake up from the shock? Thanks in advance for answering.*UPDATE* The operation was a success! I added pics, come take a look! Thanks again for those who have helped me out by commenting and giving me advice!

Electronic sleep timer for my car stereo

I live in my campervan and often listen to music before I go to sleep. I have a Sony CDX-GT470US carstereo and Sony RM-X4S wired remote for it. here is a schematic for the remote www.panuworld.net/minidisc/fordsony/rm-x2s.gif It has also a wireless remote so when I am in bed I can turn it off with it unless I have fallen asleep. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night with the radio still on. This wastes power and might flatten the battery. So I need some device which attaches into the wired remote parallel to the off switch. Then some type of timer circuit which gives a 2 second pulse to short the contacts to turn off the stereo. Any ideas appreciated.

The 1 o'clock-in-the-morning Thread

Welcome to the 1 o'clock thread. This is pretty much off-topic, but there's a rule: you can only post after 1 o'clock, your time.Just to be specific:Once you go to sleep, even a nap, you can't post until the next day.If you manage to polyphastically sleep, or you don't go to bed until 6AM, somehow making you awake at 1, wait until you're tired. The point is to see how we are on the brink of insanity... this post, as you may or may not see, was written around 1... and I think it shows.

Using Raspberry Pi (running Openelec) to turn off TV and Amp when idling.

Hi, I was hoping that you guys might be able to offer some advice to this problem (have looked everywhere and cannot find a possible solution). I have a Raspberry Pi 2 (running Openelec) connected to a TV via an A/V amp. Is there a way, whereby whenever the Pi hasn't been used in a while and goes into a lower power state, it can cut the power to the TV and amp?  The point being that I can then leave the Pi on all the time and simply press the remote to have the TV and amp come on automatically. I have considered power saving power strips but I am not sure that the master socket would work with a Pi because of the small change in wattage between idling mode and full power. The only possible solution I have found so far is somehow to use these: https://energenie4u.co.uk/catalogue/category/Raspberry-Pi-Accessories However, am I  correct in thinking that Energenie only works when you are using the Pi as a dedicated home automation solution? I would be so grateful for any help. Thanks

Can't sleep, clown will eat me!

I'm soooo very tired, but my body won't sleep, it hasn't slept in two days, I've tried everything. I really want to skip class today, but HW is due and it's 20% of my grade and the teacher has only assigned two HW's so that would be an entire letter grade lost. And I can't sleep in tomorrow, I gotta get up at 3am because a buddy an me are going fishing. Maybe sleep this weekend. Just how long can you go without sleep before bad things happen?

Windows - Monitor turning itself off after a few minutes.

Today I faced a problem that according to my internet research on the tablet is quite costly and annoying. First off my specs for the computer in the basic form: Windows 7 on 32GB of RAM with a decent Nvidia graphics card. Problem: After a few minutes of use the screen suddenly goes dark, like when going on standby but Windows itself still runs as normal. Quite often when it happens the screen brightness goes up to max right before the screen goes dark. Taking out the monitor cable and pluggin it back in usually gives the screen a few seconds until it goes dark again. Official solution as suggested in many forums and knowledgebases: Take check if the problem is the same when using a different video port on the card - checked and it was for me. Check it the fan is working as it could be the card shuts down from heat problems - checked and cleaned the heatsink while at it. Replace the graphics card if problem persists - Why the hell would I do that???? My solution: Take the card out. Clean it with some air, especially the heatsink and fan. If have and old school office using paper and pen you might have one of these fancy easers with a blue part that is really coarse and has some fine particles in it. They were used to remove ink or pen writings instead of pencil marks. If you don't have one take some aluminium foil and crunch it to a small ball. Use the eraser/foil to clean the contacts of the card. The gold plating should come out nice and shiny, if it still looks dull keep working it a few minutes longer. Just rub from one side to the other over the contacts. Once fully shiny remove all debris by blowing it off - pay special attention to the tiny gaps between the contacts!! If in doubt use an old toothbrush (dry and clean of course) to clean between the contacts, a cottum bud works too if you are desperate. Put the card back into the computer and you have a really high chance the monitor stays on and will work fine from now on.

Natural light for fixing sleep problems?

Saw this over at LifeHack.org - guy talking about using blue light to fix up his sleep patterns. In the comments someone reckons instead of spending $200 on a light one could make one using off-the-shelf LEDs. Anyone got any thoughts, or better yet, instructable?! Oh, you could buy such a light here.

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag

Once again, ThinkGeek has hatched an April Fool's joke that sparked so much interest, they're now looking into production rights. This awesome Tauntaun sleeping bag was just one of several spoof products that TG game up with to prank its audience. In response to their onslaught of letters, they're promising their best to bring it life. From ThinkGeek:Use the glowing lightsaber zipper pull on the Tauntaun sleeping bag to illustrate how Han Solo saved Luke Skywalker from certain death in the freezing climate of Hoth by slitting open the belly of a dead Tauntaun and placing Luke inside the stinking (but warm) carcass. If your kids don't change their tune on which Star Wars film is the greatest ever, you can do your best Jar Jar impression until they repent. via: consumerist

Something quite odd happened...

Ok so I had some trouble sleeping the other night, in fact I had an awful lot of trouble and ended up not sleeping for for near enough 48 hours, not unusual for me considering all the stuff happening but read on... I had sprained or stretched almost every muscle in my upper body before this happened and it had been hurting like hoohah just to move, I sit up reading etc for several hours and then descend to start the monrings activities and I noticed that all of a sudden everything has healed, even the massive pain in my shoulder from a fight during which my arm got twisted to almost dislocation... Any theories on why this might have happened, the only thing I can think of is the fact that by being awake and not moving too much it was like sleep as far as healing goes but my metabolism was higher since I wasn't sleeping... Does that sound plausible?

Replacing alarm speaker with vibrating motor (for sleeping with earplugs)

I just started college and have found sleeping with earplugs to be indespensible in a dorm room. I have a radio alarm that is pretty loud. I was thinking of ripping out the speaker and attaching a vibrating motor to it. Then I would mount the vibrating motor to my bed post or something, and hopefully it would be annoying enough to wake me up. Does the alarm send enough power to the speaker to power an electric motor? Thanks! -Cedric

Sodium Glow

Sleep is not restful here. The clouds serve as reading lamps. The sodium vapor glows. Cloudless, moonless nights, I can see my feet. The darkness will not come. Night escapes we tired city dwellers. The sodium glows just as bright as before. The ancients knew what night was, They couldn't see their hands in front of their face. They went to sleep at dusk. We modern night owls fire up the street lights. The ugly sodium glow.

Looking for Heat Resistant Flexible Material

I am trying to find a heat resistant material that is flexible... I am trying to make a pull down shade to attach to a tension rod, that will make my home more energy efficient... I work nights and sleep through the day, and have trouble sleeping when the sun gets through...

new bed.. ideas?

Ok so its time I finnaly got a new bed. I've already though about some cool ideas of what to do with it and I wanted to see if anyone would want to contribute aswell. My first idea was to take the legs from my loft bed and put them on the corners of my normal bed. so essentially a normal bed with 4 large post at the corners, from there I would to stretch some sort of canvas or muslin at the top attached to each one of the corners and use https://www.instructables.com/id/DIY-Projector-on-the-Cheap/ to project whatever I want onto the screen whie I lay down. Another idea I had was to take 2 sets of computer speakers I have and place 1 on each corner of the bed then attach them to a radio which I could use to play music through fm transmiter plugged into my laptop. I already have acumulated most of this stuff around my house so it shouldn't be too hard, but before I make any more steps into the project I'd like to hear your opinions on this.

Do you have any method for interactive bedtime stories?

I have a question, do any of you have any method for interactive bedtime stories? When I come home from work, and it's  late, Molly's already slowly getting ready to sleep. I read her stories, we watch cartoons together, but it probably is not the best way to spend time the evening together. I don't want to play with my kid in activities that envolve motion, because I know that even after 15 minutes, Molly will awaken and will never go to sleep.

UV Surface Mount LEDs

I am currently modifying an iBook G3 so that, among other things, it will be fluorescent orange. Currently, when the computer sleeps, a white LED illuminates through the casing. Since the casing will now be fluorescent, I would like to replace the white surface mount LED with an ultraviolet one, so that the case will glow as the computer is sleeping. I was wondering if someone could help me out by telling me where I might be able to purchase an ultraviolet surface mount LED? P.S. The image included will be stenciled and mirrored on each side of the apple on the top of the iBook.

Soundproof Sleeping Closure

Hello fellow instructables :) Right I need some help and advice on a design brief to help fix my problem. Problem - I live in a ground floor flat and there is 1 flat above me, 2 scum bags occupy it, a couple of 22 year olds and they have obviously never been taught consideration for others and they bang and thrash around all through the early hours of the morning. When they bang on their bare wooden floor it sounds like a heavy metal dumbbell coming through my ceiling and it wakes me abruptly and its ruining my life :( I've complained to the council the past 18 months but there not interested. They have not put any carpet down in their flat in the last 18 months and it looks like they have no intention of doing so (they can afford fags n booze tho), plus they have a baby due any day now, great.. so now there making their problems, my problem. Solution - The only thing I can think of is making a soundproof sleeping closure, a large box like a 4 poster bed but all sides solid made out of a layer of MDF then insulation then more mdf, but I have some questions before I start. How would I get adequate air in and out ? Would this even stop the banging on my ceiling waking me up ? or would it still penetrate the box ? How would I control the temperature, would it be too hot in there ? Something like the image below but more solid with a door. If anyone has any experience with this or input or any good ideas I'd be ever so grateful. Cheers in advance. Matt

Sleep deprived brain fart...Solar Panel Lightbox Generator

OK first off let me tell you I don't know much at all about solar panels, wiring, or electrical at all. So to those that want to flame save your breath. Now at 3:30 am my time I woke up and since I couldn't sleep logged on to Instructables because something was bothering me. The something that wouldn't allow me to get back to the sleep which I craved was the idea for a Solar Panel Lightbox Generator. Now I see the logic in thinking about some of the perpetual motion generators and how they are impossible. And I believe my idea is not possible either, but till I get some info from someone that knows more about electric and solar panels I don't think I will be able to rest. So here is the idea, someone please explain how my thinking is wrong. Build a box of solar panels faceing inward with a light source inside of the box. once the panels start to charge a battery, use the battery to power the light. First off I know direct sunlight is optimal for the panels, but I'm thinking "outside/Inside" the box. How much light does it take for a panel to actually start creating current? How much energy does the light use to create the light? How do you measure how much light (candle power?) a bulb/LED or what ever produces and is it enough to " power " a solar panel/cell? My thinking is if a LED/incandescent/haligion light can produce enough light, with the right amount of solar cells it could power its self after start up. I know things degrade, bulbs burn out and all that. What I guess I'm saying is mathematically could this happen? Since I know so very little about solar and electrical in general is it possible? And if it's possible could more panels be added to make more power than it uses? There's my brain fart, feel free to point out the flaws so I can get some sleep tonight.

Really basic Resistance / Amperage question:

Before I begin: yes, I should know this already, but I'm really sleep deprived right now, and therefore slightly muzzy on my electronics knowledge... My circuit has two loops running in parallel off one, limited, 18v power supply: [*] Loop 1 requires the majority of the supply's power to run [*] Loop 2 is simply a 7805 voltage regulator supplying 5v to an analog input on an Arduino, so needs almost no current running through it. [*] when Loop 1 and Loop 2 are both active, Loop 1 does not get enough power. if I place a resistor in Loop 2, in series with the 7805, will it increase the amperage to Loop 1? I think the answer is yes, but, once again, I'm MASSIVELY sleep deprived. any help is appreciated.

Look at this light. It's fantastic, isn't it?  So, I'm wondering if someone knows how to make it. I don't even know the texture of the main part of the light.  I want to make it as a present to my little brother who is trying to sleep alone. THANKS~~~

DIY YoYo

How come noone posted a DIY yoyo yet? I make them so I thought someone would've posted it by now. You can make cool mini plastics out of cheap crappy party favors from any party isle at the store, Butterfly and regular. I have to make an extra thin string for them but they sleep and fly nice. Anyone else ?

I'm going to a couple of parties and a Bad Movie Night, featuring Death Bed: The Bed That Eats People and Leprechaun 4. :D Plus, I get to dress up at work all day!

Minimalist survival kit help

I'm looking at a new prospective for a survival kit. I have an I.N.C.H. bag that i use camping. While I can pack it down to almost nothing, I dont use many of the bigger items. I was looking for ways to essentially minimize my bag. While I'm experience with the great outdoors, the minimalist aproach is a relitivly new concept to me. I want to base the kit on the ten essentials. I live in a harsh enviroment so I'd likely not be changing my shelter much. The shelter is already pretty basic.  This is my must-have gear: Map, Compass, Sunglasses, Extra clothing (a skivvy roll and what I'm wearing plus my hoody and ponchos), Illumination (Preferably no batteries), First-aid supplies, Firestarter, Matches, Knife and Extra food. My current sleep system is as follows: Medium Weather sleeping bag with compression sac, Compact collapsible cot, Goretex bivvy sac, Sleeping role and Grommeted space blanket. I'm more worried about weight than size. I will likely switch the cot for a hammock because it's pretty sizey and the metal rods make half the weight of the system. For food I was thinking keep my hobo stove and boyscout mess kit but im considering adding a hobo fishing rig. My current fishing kit is a multi function compact pole with a fly reel and spin cast reel. While very light weight it takes up some space. About 1.5'x8"x4" roughly. any ideas on additions or subtractions for the kit? I'm mostly trying to reduce weight. I'm strong but lugging around a ruck sack takes more than a simple backpack with this and that.  Any ideas are apreciated. I don't need a whole lot to live comfortably in the woods. The picture is of my I.N.C.H. bag pack in to my freighter frame. The black box is the fishing kit, the blue sac is the cot. Inside the pack is the sleeping bag bulging out. It's Probably my biggest item and in this pic is not in its compression sac as the sac was 'misplaced' while moving. I guess I'm asking for advise on downsizing the I.N.C.H. bag...
