Ok I was sitting at the end of my bed listening to my music (I plugged my psp into my stereo) and I had an idea make my room smart. For example door opens light comes on. I could even make it a security thing. But also I have about six things in different places in my room and they all need to plug into so maybe would make a little switch box/control unit. So I was wondering if you could make your room smart what would you want it to do ?hmm maybe i could make my MICROFROSTEY (mini fridge. (soon to make an instructable on it)) somehow work with this....AND YES I REALIZE A SMART CAR HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY ROOM ! ( I just googled SMART and thats what I got)

Ravens are Smart

Check out this article for a really neat description of how and why ravens are smart. Basically, it's a great trait for a scavenger to evolve- they need intelligence and what amounts to a rather sneaky form of empathy to snitch lots of food from predators and hide it from their fellow ravens. Good stuff.Ravens can toboggan, ride other animals and spy on their enemies. Their life as cadgers stealing prey from wolves, eagles and bears has made them outstandingly intelligent.

Smart battery charger

I am trying to build a smart charger that will charge a Ni-Mh 2/3a 1200mah 9.6v charger. By smart I mean that it will stop when the battery is full, then if it drops below, say 9.4v, it will charge it to that again. Most of them also have a discharging button that will bring the voltage down before charging it. For the charger part I found this website;=1&ArticleID;=1823Which details how to make a charger that will charge a 13.3v battery. Of course, mine is 9.6v, so it would have to be modified. The current "dumb" charger for the battery just gives it 12v @ 250ma. The smart charger also is powered off 220vac, which is not good because I live in the US. IS there a way to make it work off the 12v 250ma charger? Also, the circled components (the overlay thingy wasn't working), what are they? the no/nc one might be a switch, and the RL1 one could be...a relay?

smart window thermostat

Wanted: circuit to open window at night when it is cooler outside than in. Close it when hotter outside in morn. Probably add something to prevent it from opening and closing several times in the eve and morn with random fluctuations. Prefer 2 thermostats, 1 outside, one in, rather than a timer. I've a vague recollection of a circuit with 2 potentiometers, one on the motor, one on the control panel, such that turning the control pot will activate the motor until its pot is at the same position as ctrl pot.. Could a circuit something  like this control my window? But most thermostats are on/off, not continuous variable.   It would be simple to do a switch logic thing like:  “IF thermo ‘I’ is above 70 AND thermo ‘O’ is below 70, THEN OPEN “  but that only works at 1 temp.

Re-using Smart TV board from dead TV to make another TV smarter...

Hi, I have just bought LG 47GA6400 TV but I damaged LCD screen (CRD31092201) when I was assembling it.  I couldn't find low cost LCD to replace and I started wondering how I can reuse any remaining parts of this TV. Actually there are many people like me wondering what to do with dead Smart TV. Few years ago you would receive a standard advice – throw it away. But today Smart TV parts are powerful and with your help might be re-used again... Here is an example: My LG TV has mainboard with dual core CPU,  Google TV inside and cool remote controller with QWERTY keyboard and tons of applications.... I wish I could reuse it with other, not so smart LCD TV I have.  The only problem, how to connect Smart TV mainboard to a HDMI.  It doesn't have HDMI out, it has only input ports and one LCD interface cable.... Is it a crazy idea to convert LCD interface back to HDMI or VGA ? Can you create an instructables to show how to do that ?

Smart Alarm Clock - wake me early or wake me late because of something

Hello, I came up with this idea the other day as I am new to long distance commuting on public transport and the winter season is upon us in the UK.  I hope this is posted in the right section.  I've loitered on instructables for a number of years but have never ventured into the forums. Basically I get up in the morning with enough time for my normal morning routine and then leave the house by car to catch a train that runs every hour from my local train station.  The three main factors that effect me getting on the train to work.  1) Waking up on time, 2) the train actually running (it has been cancelled twice in the past 3 weeks) and 3) getting to the station on time.   As I see it there are three variables to the situation.  The time to get up in order to catch the train if it is running - 1) more or less fixed but this could vary day by day, i.e. some days need to put bins out or perhaps take something extra which requires preparation.  2) The extra time taken in clearing ice from the car and driving more slowly to the station because of ice and snow - perhaps this needs to be variable too.  i.e. frost does not have an impact on driving conditions as much as deep snow.  3) Is the train running or late? If it's not running then get an extra hour in bed - for me I commute up to 5 hours a day so extra rack time is a bonus. Basic Requirements I think the clock should monitor outside temperature at least or get that information from the internet, in which case get more detailed data   The clock should be relatively accurate, again we could use the internet for NTP or use a radio synced signal The clock needs to be aware which train I take The clock needs to know I don't go to work some days The clock should need minimal user intervention to complete it's tasks The clock should be mains powered with battery backup The clock should be able to dim it's display at night but be viewable in bright interior room conditions - i.e. we don't need it readable in bright sunshine. The clock shouldn't be too expensive to make.   Specifically I have been thinking of using a and 4 8x8 displays as I happen to have these.  Thinking about this for only a short time I guess the clock would be more easily programmed via the web and in fact probably pull it's data from the internet.  Cycling power could be the basis to fetch new configuration so not user buttons should be required. We would need to find services to get train information and very local weather information. A service or server would need to be setup where the unit could check in.  Perhaps it would be simpler if this was the proxy for the train and weather information. That's it for now.  I wanted to get my ideas in writing whilst throwing it out there for someone else to think about.  My thoughts are if you want to keep an idea to yourself then don't tell anyone - please feel free to do what you may with the information in this post. Cheers, Al

Help with JARVIS-like Smart Home

Hey guys, I am planning to do a project with Smart Home theme. I would like to create JARVIS-like application, which would be able to recognize my voice and then do appropriate action. Example: Temperature Sensor Me: "Jarvis, Show Temperature" Jarvis: -"Temperature displayed sir" I am planning to buy a very cheap Tablet, on which I would like to write an Android Application, which would create "jarvis" and other activities. For example, if I say "Show Temperature" the activity would pop up, where the temperature will be displayed. I will messure temperature with a Thermometer (DS1280 most probably). And I'd like to use a Bluetooth module to communicate Wireless with them. Temp. Sensor -------- > Arduino board ------------> Tablet All of the above are on different locations. I need help with this project, so if anyone could do an instructable on how to do this - would be really awesome! What do I need ? - Temp. Sensor - Bluetooth Module - Arduino Mega - Speech regonition software (BitVoicer probably) - anything else? Also, is the TFT display ( good enough to replace the Tablet ?  Meaning, can I write such an Application to this display ? Thanks, David

Calling All Good/Smart Knexers

Note: When I address 'ibles, I'm talking about the K'nex community here.Hey, knexers of 'ibles. Ignore my title, but it was irresistible , was it not?I'm here before you all today to give you all something to ponder, or act on. Yes, this is about the K'nex 'ibles and KI dilemma. I'm going to tell you now, I'm not going to flame 'ibles, or put offense upon it. Instructables is a DIY website, not specific to K'nex. It wasn't made to hold this community. In my opinion, people here care too much about things they shouldn't , such as ratings. People can rate them anything they want. "5 star because it looks cool!" "1 star, I don't like you." I haven't seen a lot of constructive criticism, which is, I think, what everyone should want. Most of the comments I see aren't very pleasant to read; do you really need to say "u" for "you"? Or "thx" for "thanks"? There aren't many rules here to enforce this. Or if there are, it's too laid back.First off, as you can tell by the name, K'nex Innovation was started for the productivity of K'nex. The decently small community there uses good grammar, to a point. It is moderated better post wise, as it is focused on one topic and things can be easier checked, for its size, once again. Another reason for this is that it's focused on one thing, and one thing only, so that there's less people than Instuctables obviously has. I'm not saying the people on KI have perfect grammar, I don't have it, but I'm saying that they try to the best of their abilities. No rating system. We give constructive criticism, and look down on "OMG COOL GUN!!!!1!!!!11!!" type posts. If you want to say that kind of stuff, PM the dude/man/guy. There's a mixed variety of people; gunners, and then some that make other nifty contraptions. There's a chat room, for K'nex talk. Of course, we have fun there too, throwing off jokes and playing around. Usually a good 8 or so people are in there. A handful of the more matured users who once roamed this site have settle there, such as Mepain and Oodalumps, to name a few. Recently, people there have started a podcast, currently with only two episodes. Also a step up in the community (coming from K'nex Innovation), soon there will be the first internet organized K'nex war.Even if you completely disagree what all that I said, please go check the site out: for those of you who want to talk it up with us first, here's the KI Chatroom:;;=%23KIchat&

Smart board Using distance meters.

Hello! My name is Muneer. I was wondering whether this concept of making a smart board would work(shown in image). The idea is to use two distance meters to measure distance ‘a’ and distance ‘b’ from the transmitter in the pen to the top corners. Distance c is fixed and known. Using the distances, the x and y distance should be workable from the formulas(shown in image) I guess. I have a few concerns and require your expert opinion, a. How can we construct the distance meter (IR? Ultrasonic? Any available schematic...etc) b. Converting the x and y distances to pixel information c. Interfacing the board to a computer, possibly giving the input from the smart board directly as a mouse input. or if you could suggest other practical ways. Could you please help me with this? Thanks.

Bluetooth Water level for smart phones

I want to know how this would be accomplished PLEASE. Looking to make a bluetooth system that sends water level of a tank to a smart phone. I would think the most cost effective way to do this is by using a bluetooth module and float switches. The module would send three levels full, half and empty, so say all float switches are triggered it would be full, only one it would be half and if none it would be empty. What do i need to build this.

Image Deletion- "Well that was a smart move."

Well that was smart. I thought for the first time, I would have a clean out of my image library. I apparently have never noticed before, that your image library is directly connected to your I'ble pictures. I assumed that after you had published an I'ble, that the images in it would be stored. I guess I was wrong... That really really, does not make me happy. I'm just hoping I have some of them saved on my computer, because that little effort just wiped at least 3 of my I'bles... Luckily I was getting a server error so I stopped deleting them after the first 70... I know it's my own fault, but I can't believe I have never had a conversation or heard about that before. I have no idea where to start now, I guess I should un-publish all the I'ble's.

Boy inventor re-imagines doorbell, gets VERY rich!

A 13-year-old boy from Croydon is set to make hundreds of thousands of pounds after inventing a doorbell that calls the householder if no-one answers the door. The boy entered a school "Dragons' Den" type contest, and ended up with his idea in production.  Orders made so far should earn him £250,000 ($411,000).  Three of his fellow contestants ended up with full patents on their ideas, and one other is negotiating with a Chinese manufacturer to get his idea on the shelves.  That boy is only twelve! Dubbed Smart Bell, the device came about in response to a competition hosted by Rook's London school. The contest, however, necessitated a working prototype. Rook's parents passed the plans along to a family friend, Paula Ward (crowned world's top female inventor of 2004 at INPEX), who sent the plans to China. Less than a year after its development, major U.K. retailers have signed up to sell the Smart Bell, which will retail for £40, or about $66. The Smart Bell has a built-in SIM card and other cellular technology that will call the owner's phone. The unit also produces some subtle white noise that mimics the effect of an intercom.
