How do I edit the sketch of a stl file that has Certificate Trust File error?

I am able to by-pass the error that says the file is Certificate Trust File, but in solidwirks I am unable to edit the sketch. I thought you just click on sketch and go from there, but that doesn't make the model go into sketch mode. Thanks

iphone 5 solidpart

I'm a middle school shop teacher and am looking for a basic iphone 5 and 6 solidworks file for students to modify and print in our 3D printers.  The ones I've found are all created in a version of Solidworks newer than the one we use.  Any suggestions?  Does anyone have a file like this?

Solidworks shows Mass Different from Reality?

Hi, When I check the mass properties of a model it gives me some weight (mass). When I weigh the actual product the mass is radically different (about 10-15 grams). Anybody had this problem? Can Solidworks be trusted regarding mass properties? Thanks, Yair.

I have been asked for my solidworks file. I would like to have it permanently attached to my instructable so people can have easy access. Is that possible? If so, how? Obtaining helical slices from a 3D model

Hey guys, I've begun to work on a volumetric display for a school project like the one in the link at the bottom of this post but I can't figure out a good way to obtain helical slices of the 3D model which I intend to project. I could do it manually by subtracting the "negative" of the helical screen from my model in Solidworks and then take a screen shot, but this would be pretty time intensive since I would need 360 shots(360 2D images from below the model with the screen negative rotated one degree each time). Is there any program out there or add-on for solidworks which could automate this process? Or even a functionality in solidworks that I haven't thought of? Update on the layered metal weapons/props

Hello to everyone who took the time to read this update/list. So I have not forgotten about my promise to upload the Solidworks files and cutting plans. However that will be taking a backseat to finals until summer break. I will however go ahead and list off the items finished, in progress, on hold, or currently only in Solidworks form. Finished -6in Axe: 3lb head on an oak clad 1/4in steel flat bar about 20in long total -3in Tomahawk/Axe: 1.25lb head on a para cord wrapped 1/4in steel flat bar about 20in long total -27in BoneSplitter: 3.2lb aluminium reinforced steel construction. -18in BoneCracker: 2lb aluminium reinforced steel construction. -18in All steel BoneCracker: 3.5lb steel reinforced steel construction. More square handle and better center of balance than previous version In progress -10in Bearded Axe: 3.25lb head. To be mounted on oak clad 1/4in steel flat bar handles 18in, and 30in long. -10in blade Pugio: Model made of mild steel for practice and training. Needs to have bevels, and fullers ground plus handle and guard mounted. -8in blade Pugio: Model made of mild steel for practice and training. Needs to have concave edges, bevels, and fullers ground plus and guard mounted. As for the BoneSplitter, BoneCracker, and Bastard sword the stacked plate construction is used to both reduce the weight of the item and stiffen it at the same time.

Nonleathalbychoice style weapons/"props"

Hello to anyone who follows me. Yes I am still alive. Now the reason I am posting this is because I feel like I need to give back to the community I have been using/involved with for years now. Not the craft community but the Knex community here. Many of them have moved on from Knex since starting college and so have I. Mostly do to the lack of space and already messy room. So in order to give back I have come up with a better more interesting method. Instead of using Oblivitus's method of making the Knex guns in a CAD program I will instead be giving you the plans and basic instructions to make weapons/props inspired by Nonleathalbychoice.  This being said unlike the Knex guns these items are going to be less accessible, more difficult, and dangerous. To do these things it will help to have a computer with Solidworks 2014 on it. Later I will post PDFs of the cutting plans in order to reach a wider audience. That being said  some of the projects were  and will be inspired by scrap metal I found and will be costly and wasteful to replicate. However I believe that the raw materials for 4 of the projects came in at under $100 total. So still cheaper than many of the larger Knex guns. Also I probably wont be posting these things as step by step instructions since most of these items are made by just cutting out sheet/bar metal. Any advanced instructions will be noted. The time frame for these instructions is going to be very slow due to college. Expect maybe 1  a month if even that.  I will try to inform you of changes and fixes as soon as they become apparent to me.  Also I am first writing this after only an hour of sleep. So if any of you spot grammatical errors please point them out to me.

Well I have made a couple and played in fusion 360 Kind of like it but still have some feachers I like more in solidworks. I made an other wax stamp in solidworks and saved it as step AP214 But for the life of me I can't figure out how to inport it into fusion??? I could alsso save it as AP203, or STL

What is a good, cheap, 3D part modeling program? Answered

I need a program to design 3D parts, if I had a few thousands of dollars budget, I would of purchased Inventor or Solidworks but they are much too expensive. Searching the web I only found all kinds of open source programs that are not "professional" enough. I am looking for something cheaper than 100$. Anybody knows about one? Thanks.

Any other engineers have trouble getting used to 123D design?

I'm wondering if anyone else who has experience with professional CAD software has tried 123D and finds it difficult to use. I have ~7 years of experience using Solidworks in a mechanical engineering and robotics context. I recently tried to pick up 123D for use with my home 3D printer and find it absolutely infuriating to use. It feels like working with oven mitts on. But, I see screenshots of very complex models people have made all over the place. So, I'm not sure if: - I'm spoiled from the use of "professional" software and need to lower my expectations for free consumer software. For example, I'm very used to full control over creating reference geometry like axes and planes, and creating everything from 2D sketches that are then extruded/revolved/swept (as opposed to 3D shape primitives) and having direct control over all of the dimensions the entire time. In 123D I find it difficult to do something as simple as create two rectangular prisms and put them a fixed distance from each other, or create a rectangular prism and then put a hole in it a certain distance from one edge. - If this is just a difference between Autodesk and Dassault software - e.g. if I was used to using Autodesk Inventor instead of Solidworks, maybe I'd have an easier time picking up 123D. - If I'm just being lazy/impatient, and need to watch more tutorial videos and give myself more time to pick up the software. So, just curious if anyone else has a similar experience coming from using professional software (as opposed to a maker/hobbyist who had never used 3D CAD at all before).

Minimum cost CNC/3D printer?

I am looking to make a 3D printer and I need a few questions answered.  A) How can I convert a sketchup or solidworks model to G-code B) how can I feed that to an arduino uno line-by-line C) how powerful does a laser have to be (when well focused) to burn wood or paper/thin plastic (black paper, of course)? Not cut the wood, just make a visable surface darkening, but cut the paper/plastic? D) what is the simplest method to make a miniature extruder? my printer will have very little torque and size, not enough for the glue gun one, not my arduino enough IO outputs for a stepper. Answers to any questions are appreciated.

AutoCAD for Mac Survey

AutoCAD was the first CAD package I really felt comfortable using and designing in. I've since realized that part of being an engineer is being familiar enough with dozens of different CAD packages so that you can recognize which one is the best tool for the specific challenge at hand. Since I use a Mac, I keep a copy of Windows running under Parallels primarily for CAD packages. This is actually a pretty common theme with people working at the various Squid Labs-related companies. I could probably walk just a couple of offices down and see SolidWorks on a MacBook Pro screen right now.So, I'm happy to read that AutoDesk is asking for input on a version of AutoCAD for the Mac:Mac Fanbois Get their Wish: AutoCADNearly two decades ago, Autodesk abandoned AutoCAD on the Mac. But now perhaps it is seeing too many sales lost to the likes of ArchiCAD to architecture clients, NX to mechanical engineering customers, and SketchUp to designers. Autodesk marketing calls it "trying to stay in tune with our customers," and are asking Mac and AutoCAD users to fill out a survey. ..."

Free CAD software

Back in college we used to work with SolidWorks, so I'm used to making some simple work in that. Problem is they do not have trials anymore, and I can't afford such a program. So I'm looking for a nice free CAD program to replace it. - It should have 3D capabilities, to make it easier for me to understand what I'm doing. - Constraints, so I can define dimensions and features and have the other features adjust to it - Boolean and Splines support, but no need for fancy tools. - Drafting, to make the finished blueprint. It doesn't need any simulation, rendering, analytics, or management tools, and should, before anything else, be easy to learn. Right now I have found a number of programs, but I have no idea about how to figure out which is "better" for me. I will be testing them while waiting for a possible reply, so maybe I'll be the one to find a nice one :) But PLEASE don't hesitate to reply if you have any suggestions! The ones I have found are: BRL-CAD, the US Army's open-source CAD Program PowerSHAPE-e Kompas 3D T-FLEX CAD Student Edition Anyway, hope we can get a dialog going and find the best free hobby starter's CAD software for tech and craft :)

could you use an tesla turbine to make an jet engine? Answered

I was looking around the webs, and i found that there was no information about an Tesla turbine-jet engine. i was wondering if a Tesla jet engine is possible. so i looked up jet engines and tried to figure out how they work, but i still dont know if it work. so i thought i would ask some smart peeps who would know the answer. also i did see a guy who made an pulse jet engine with an Tesla turbine on it but thats not the same as a jet engine. but it did gave me a few ideas(see picture made in solidworks by me (yes its not very pretty, made it in like 30 sec)) i thought of an Tesla jet engine but i dont really think it can work. plz give feed back and help me in my quest for jet Tesla engines. this jet engine sucks up air with the big Tesla turbine and adds fuel to the air  then burning it causing it to expand forcing it true the second Tesla turbine which powers the first thus the cycle is complete i guess. A = air inlet (yes i know the turbine in front is bigger then the turbine in the back idk why i did that XD ) B1&2 are the drive shafts you could connect b2 to b1, or b1 to extra fans or props to make a jet prop engine ¿? (XD) c is fuel inlet, i dont know how this should work

European Voluntary Service in Netherlands

European Voluntary Service (EVS) is an Erasmus+ program for young people (17-30 years old) who want to spend a long time living in a different country and with almost all the cost paid: apartment, wifi, transport, food... Bataviawerf (Lelystad, Netherlands) is a dockyard with special ambitions. Ships from the golden century which has been important in our maritime history, are reconstructed here. Our organisation is depending on the work of volunteers for some years already. Project Collaboration?

I'm REALLY bored at work at the moment and need a personal project to distract me. The problem with past projects is I often run into problems or lose interest and they fall by the wayside. I was thinking that if the project was a collaboration I'd be more motivated and could call on people with better skills than me. Anyways I'll propose a few projects, and let me know if you are interested. Or if you've got an idea, post it up. I'd love to do something robotics related, but m programming skills aren't great. I can use "wrapper" environments, like Matlab and Arduino, but raw C++ isn't a strong point. I've got access to all the CAD stuff that would ever be needed, Pro/E, Solidworks, AutoCAD, ANSYS, Strand7. I've got some skills in and access to composite manufacturing, like carbon fibre and glass but no vacuum baggin facilities anymore. My first project idea is a bargraph type watch - kind of like the awesome binary watches here, but the time increments on a bargraph. I think only one bargraph to show the minutes would be necessary - you pretty much know the hour most of the time, and you could work it out using the minutes if it's around the hour. A ten segment display would give resolution of 6 minutes - good enough for most purposes. I could do the hardware layout and manufacturing for this project, but I don't think I could do the programming. how about a homemade SMS device? not the most practical when mobile phones are so small and cheap and would be WAY more fully featured, but I think it would be cool to have a homemade device that could at least send SMSs. Open source, single sided PCB, would be awesome. obviosuly as small as possible but maybe aim for something the size of a blackberry of treo? Not stylish maybe but maximum hacker cred thumb keyboard ---> microcontroller ---> cellular module&LCD GPS based car locator - I know this functionality exists in modern cars but certainly not my 1994 feroza - a box that sits in your car that SMSs you GPS coordinates if your car alarm is activated. I've been looking for this for ages in a commercial product but the prices are outrageous. Other more outlandish projects are a CNC machine and single sided, through-hole, no (or very little) programming MP3 player Any ideas?

A Quest!

OK - first off, hello everyone!! I've not posted an Instructable for perhaps 4 years now, but I have done a fair few things in the intervening time (shortened life story to follow - if you just want details about the project, scroll down.) Not sure when, but in early childhood I started playing around with K'NEX. I'm sure you'll all agree thats acceptable for a kid of about 5. Several years progressed before I discovered the art of K'NEX weaponry - which led me to create my first ever (and widely crap) Instructable. My fascination for things that you have to put together to make them work has not faded - I have become involved heavily in the Greenpower Race Series for Schools (www.greenpower.co.uk, if anyone's interested - I'm Rob on the forum) and next year will probably be my last truly competitive one - I'm building the one for next year over the summer. Having looked for a couple months about what I can do next, I've come up with a bit of a foolhardy quest  that sevearl people have probably already done. The Project (hello, if you've just scrolled down) is to design, build and drive on the road an Electric, 2-seater, Hardtop Sports car with the following features: 85 MPH top speed (15 more than the Motorway limit), 500 mile range, flash charging capabilities, various mod-cons (e.g. a windscreen), some luggage spaces and a price tag of as little as possible. I'm probably going to be designing the chassis on a 3D CAD program (either Solidworks or AutoCAD) over the next couple of years, as well as getting enough money, sourcing parts, and designing the PWM (Pulse Width Modulation, controls how long the motor is on for in any given second) system. Here is a list of what I see as I need to do: Source electric motor Source batteries + charging system Design chassis Source parts for chassis - Welder, rear differential, steering components, bits of Aluminium/Steel (haven't decided which) box/tube. Build rolling chassis. Anyhow, I will be making an instrucable and will hopefully publish it once I'm done. The whole thing will consist of my entire design process and building processes. 123D Design tutorial for technical parts with accurate dimensions?

I'm an engineer with ~7 years of experience using Solidworks (professional CAD software). After hearing about Autodesk 123D Design here on Instructables, I tried to start using it to design and print things with my home 3D printer. However, I'm initially finding it very frustrating to use (more detail on that in a minute) - and I'm not sure if this is just because I'm stuck in my ways with the software I'm used to, or if I'm just trying to use 123D for something it wasn't really intended for. To try and give some concrete examples - I understand that you can create 3D shape primitives (rectangular prisms, cylinders etc) and assign them dimensions when you create them. I also understand that you can create 2D sketch objects and define their dimensions. What I don't find intuitive at all is how you can assign the dimensions of objects relative to each other. For example, say I want to make a 10x10x1mm bracket, with two 2mm diameter circular holes that have their positions on the face defined by the distance from their centers to the edge of the bracket. In a parametric CAD program, that is very easy to do in a 2D sketch and then extrude to a 3D solid. In 123D, I understand that I can create a rectangle primitive and then put holes in it using cylinder primitives - but it seems impossible to define the exact location of those cylinders relative to the edges of the rectangle; also impossible to create a sketch with two circles in it and a dimension defining the distance between their centers. To give another concrete example: at the 4:20 mark in this video (from this Instructable), he draws a circle on top of an existing rectangular part, and then "centers" it by just dragging it around freehand and eyeballing it. Would it be possible to define the center of that circle relative to an edge, corner, or center of that existing rectangle? Or can 123D just not do that? What I'd like to see, if anyone is up for it, is a step-by-step tutorial (preferably in video format) for making some sort of "technical" part where the dimensions matter and it isn't sufficient to just eyeball it and drag things around. e.g. a bracket like this (exact dimensions don't have to be what I drew here, but you get the idea). All of the tutorials I've seen so far - including the official Autodesk ones - seem to just focus on eyeballing it/free-handing dragging parts around.

Make HID (human interface design) beautiful

There are few ubiquitous household items as ugly in form and function as a computer keyboard. They're everywhere. They're an inefficient and archaic visual distraction, barely suited to stamp ink on dead trees, as they were originally designed to do. Computer components need to be elegant, form well married to specific functionality needs, if computers are to fade into the background of life and thus best support it -  and that is nigh impossible with the keyboard hanging out. I'm a hci software guy. I spent almost three years writing a library of code to enable a new generation of input devices… beautiful, simple  and efficient… closer to playing a musical instrument than typing on a typewriter. I need designs for a piece or two of hardware that shows off how beautiful and/or hidden a computer input device can be when you completely minimize its form… If you are an industrial designer or a mid level maker or even a just a for the fun of it 2d or 3d CAD nerd, allowing for the device functionality will be a trivial concern, with 90% of your attention paid to the form of the device… and that's what I'm looking for… a beautiful replacement for the horrible and outdated keyboard and mouse that shows off the features of the software and blends in to people's lives. The designs will be 5-key and 10-key. The electronics area to allow for will be pretty simple -  probably just an HID chip - as tiny as possible - with ports to wire to buttons, etc -  a power source, wireless connector (preferably low power bluetooth), and wires to connect the chip to everything it needs to connect to. While the designs can be created as completely conceptual, we would prefer to be able to physically prototype them using something like 3d printing, laser cutting or other maker accessible options and electronics components that would also be maker accessible. Preferably, the file format will be solidworks compatible. For now, this is an unpaid gig, with the compensation mainly being in the form of some really sweet portfolio designs, hope for a better HID tomorrow, and maybe a makey makey type gift for those times when nothing but a banana piano will do. We do have investor meetings lined up and will credit any prototype designs used to show off the software during those, as well. If we decide to sell the software in various configurations packaged with hardware variations, and everyone feels like a good time was had by all in this trial run, then we can talk about a production partnership. If that were to be a possibility, industrial design related experience or strong enough to heavily research it type interest - sourcing, packaging, etc. - would be a big bonus. (As a note, while the  HCI is all key input based now, there will later be support for things like 3d tracking options - So, the project could get even more exciting on the HID side.) __________________________________________________ If you are interested in learning more, please use the PM system provided through Instructables as first contact.
