The Sounds of Pi

This is a rather interesting website... It converts the first 10,000 digits of pi into sounds. Here is the website! It will come up with some keys. You then select a note for 1's, then one for 2's, then one for 3's, and so forth. It's hard for me to explain, just give it a shot. There are instructions on the website.

Sound sythesizing? Answered

I am making a robot, and want to make it say "mole-e." I want it to be a clear reference to "wall-e." There is a long story behind why I want "mole-e," so I won't go into that. I am planning on making a very simple mp3 player that is triggered by an Arduino. Basically, I know HOW to make the robot produce sounds, I just don't know how to make it say "mole-e." There are mp3s and oggs readily available of the "Wall-e" sound bite, but does anyone have a clue as to how I can sythesize it to say "mole-e?" Any software reccomendations or tricks? Can I record it and then edit it to sound like "wall-e?"

Sounds with electronics

So here goes, I am trying to figure out how to make basic sound generating machines. Preferably generating a sound that can be modified with a potentiometer or something of the sort. The principle is simple, these will be for messing around, possibly, if the result is good, using in some random recordings of mine, so most of the machines will have a jack out plug. Anyhow I was wondering, what, in a circuit, actually makes sound, what is the base of all sound generating electronic devices (synth, analog stuff, beepers) what actually creates the wave, the current that is sent to the speakers? Have I just answered my own question by saying current? Is it just the electrical current, and putting random resistors, capacitators, potentiometers and stuff changes the sound that is generated? Any help is more than welcome! and if anything good comes of it, I'll post some sound clips!

Safe and Sound

Hey homeboys and girls. This is Bilal checking in from Eric's dining room table. So it's true, I did have a bit of trouble with Airport Security. They made me miss my flight checking out all my crazy scary gadgets. It would be irritating but hey, I'm sure loads of people haven't seen a metronome before. Gasp! It ticks! Arriving in SF would have been quite unsatisfactory without a brief car chase so thankfully security obliged us with a short run with their tiny electric cars. Never fear, Eric, Christy and I made a swift getaway to the hills. Go Volvo go! -BG (thanks for breakfast Eric)

Replace sounds on greeting card sound module

Hello, I recently purchased this item from ebay. It's a "30s Light Sensor Record Device Module Music Box Sound Chip For Greeting Card" It comes with a pre-recorded happy birthday song. Now I want to change that song and I am pretty sure it can be done somehow, because I can see some connections available, except I am not sure what they mean and how to use them. The seller responded that there is no documentation and if I want certain sounds I have to send them the files and they will record them for me before shipping... which is ridiculous... I want to be able to change the songs when I please. The connections marked on the board say: TG1 TG2 TG3 GND VDD PW1 and PW2 Any suggestion could help.

Has anyone done this?!?

If you don't have it set up like this already, then try it. If you have a smallish room, try putting your subwoofer in the corner. In my room the bass lights up like the 4th of july compared to when the box is sitting in the middle of my room. I'm listening to it right now and it just sounds wicked. You the bass more than you hear the subwoofer itself moving and groaning at the low notes.

sound effects modules

Hello!! I am planning several Halloween props that will benefit bigly from sound effects. For instance...I'm working on a mantel version of the demonic grandfather clock in Disney's Haunted Mansion. It would be awesome to have the sound of the ominous ticking, backed with a chime, that the "real" clock has. This could be an audio loop of just a few seconds. Some of the other parts of my scheme would be enhanced with short loops of sound effects or mood music...a minute or two at most. I don't have a background in electronics, but I can follow directions. Any advice on constructing a few, small sound effects modules? Thanks!!

Speed of sound question !!

My friend and I were debating : If somebody sitting in the back of a plane cockpit going faster than the speed of sound ( the whole plane that is, imagine it was the SR71 ) insults the pilot at the front will the pilot hear it and turn around to punch the guy sitting in the back? This one might be more understandable: Can someone sitting in the front of a super sonic plane hear the guy in the back, without the help of microphone and all that crap. My friend thinks it is impossible becose the plane is going faster than the speed of sound and the sound from the guy at the back will not go fast enough for it to catch up. I think that is total nonsense Anybody knows the answer ????

Sound Activated LED's

Good Afternoon everyone, A friend of mine asked me to help him build something and I sort of hit a snag in the process. I know how to make LED's flash to the beat of music but what he wants is so that way when there are sounds around him the LED lights flash with the sounds around him (Such as if he was at a party, the LED lights would flash with the beat of the music even though they weren't connected to it.) Is this possible and if so what would I need to build or get? Thank you! Sincerely, Khris

Recording ultrasonic sound

I looked up at bat detector, a device that converts ultrasonic signals into audible sounds. Most bats produce high frequency calls which are often higher than a human ear can pick up. A bat detector picks up the frequencies and then converts the sound into a lower, audible frequency. I was thinking if I could get a bat detector, I use it to capture the ultrasonic sounds. While bat detector could pick up these high frequencies, it would be interesting to see how it will pick up the faintly heard, to human ears - sounds of the industrialised areas/city or even at isolated/quiet areas. The bat detector I want to use is this - http://www.magenta2000.co.uk/acatalog/B ... _Bat4.html I'm thinking of hooking up the bat detector to a digital recorder and a binaural microphone and capture the sound through those equipments. I would greatly appreciate your suggestions/opinions on this matter.

Computer not playing sound? Answered

Whenever I play music out of my computer, a thing keeps popping up called Realtek HD Manager saying that I've plugged something into the microphone socket! I've checked both of them (Front and back) and nothing is in them! So I disabled by going: Start > Run > 'msconfing' > Startup, then disabling it. It told me to restart my computer for the changes to work, and when I booted it up again it had no sound, so I turned it back on and rebooted the computer and it still dosen't work! And yes, I have checked all the obvious things like if the sound's muted. Thansk, Flannel UK

Sound Locator Circuit?

Hey all, Here's an idea maybe one of you solder-jockeys can help me out with: Ever have a sound that you'd like to find the source of, but your ears can't tell you where it's coming from?  I'd like to build a circuit to do that. I was thinking of something like three electret microphones with op-amps between them in differential mode.  That would give three signals that would be, presumably, the ratio of sound coming from each mic.  (And, therefore, an indication of direction.) Of course, I'd also like to get an adjustable bandpass filter in there somewhere to isolate just the sound I'm looking for.  That's the part that complicates all designs I've thought of. And then, if I could somehow figure out distance too, that would be the ULTIMATE! Here's one possible use case: A car makes a funny squeal noise a highway speeds. The mechanic takes out this device and magnets it inside the hood.  He runs a control wire back to the cabin. Once the car is in motion and making the desire noise, he adjusts the BP filter using potentiometer(s) and a pair of headphones. The device tells him where (relative to itsself) the sound is coming from. Your bill is less because the problem was diagnosed quickly without a lot of guesswork. Thoughts?

Experimental sounds/music

I'm just curious about the people out there who are interested in ambient/experimental music and creating their own. What programs/microphones do you use? What things do you find yourself often recording? Do you manipulate the way your recordings sound to achieve a certain sound? I've just started recording with Bi-Naural Mics. When I want to do field recordings, I use I mini disc recorder. I offer all of my works free to listen to on Jamendo (maybe I should make an instructable on that site)!
