Wild & Wicked Weapons

Popsci has an awesome compilation of some ridiculous weapons developed by the military. Some of them are old and discontinued, like the Gay bomb (yes, they were considering developing a bomb that turns you gay). And others that are pretty cutting edge, like the railgun that fires a 7 pound shell at 7 times the speed of sound and some remote controlled cyborg spy moths. Here's a link, check it out:Worlds Spookiest Weaponsvia: hack-a-day

Since We're on The Topic of Dreams...

Well, I've seen quite the lot of dreams being posted, and it just so happened I had one last night:Starting from when I can remember:Me and two of my friends got selected to fly into space to investigate mysterious disappearances of items from the Space Station..So we go through training, and tests, and finally comes the date of liftoff(I can't recall much though here)while were are in the space station, I notice something...this isn't the space station NASA sent us to, Its an exact replica of the parking lot at Macy's in my town...I look around..and my one friend (cody) says "Hey man, thats your car isn't it?""Wait a sec.. IT IS!"I walk up to the car, and reach into my pocket...my keys are chiming off each other as my hand shakes..I unlock the door, and sit inside..checking the sun visor, and to my astonishment, there is a picture of my crush (whom I wont mention)the picture is folded and faded..I get out of the car, and look around..I'm back in Cape Canaveral!in the parking lot of NASA...as I walk with my two friends in the doors, I am greeted by Eric Schmidt (CEO of Google)((which I never knew till i searched for it today after my dream))he says "It'll be great having you with us in our mysterious hunt for the missing items in the Space Station."My friend (cody) says "Wait a second, I forgot my travelers guitar" (in the trunk of his car)so we go to get his guitar and as he's pulling it out, I notice something in his car..A GUN!"Why do you have a gun in your car cody?"as I finished saying that, these two men ride up on a moped and demand (in broken English):"Best not make any sudden movements"as the two guys talk amongst themselves, I whisper to cody"Psst, grab your guitar, and get down"He grabs the guitar, and ducks down as I reach for the gun, which ends up to be a .22-250, and shoot the one guy in the leg, he falls, the other guy pulls from his pants a handgun, he fires three shots, and I fire two, they all miss,I load my second to last shell, and take aim...POWthrough the chin, into the throat, and out his neck my shot traveledhe lays motionless on the ground as his partner, hobbles on to his moped and rides away..I gather myself, and get my friend, as we walk by the entrance to the building I see these two gentlemen playing a tune, my friend sits down, and strums along..they were playing Boom Boom by John Lee Hooker...which incidentally was the song I awoke too this morning....prolly the weirdest, most vivid dream I have ever had...Sorry about the plethora of misspellings, non-capitalization and spotty punctuation.. its late, and I need sleep..

Not your grandma's crochet

I just discovered the artwork of Patricia Waller. She seems to mostly make stuffed crocheted items, but despite the bright cheerfulness of the first glimpse, the content is weird, spooky, gruesome, or otherwise unexpected. These are no lace doilies! Some of my favorites are the hermit fairy, man-eating tiger complete with bleeding arm, and the slightly annoyed-looking roasted pig. There are lots more. I can't decide whether I'm more impressed with the bizarre subject matter or the remarkable detail.

Seeking ideas for a haunted house! Pranks, gags and spooky stuff needed!

Hi all, My girlfriend and I are going to be making a haunted house and we're looking for ideas. We have access to an old abandoned house and we're going to pretend that one of us is a house inspector or a rat catcher or something and have friends set their friends up for a Halloween scare. We've got some ideas (right now we're trying to build an r/c servo that pulls the pin holding up a painting so that it suddenly falls off the wall.... Tina built an r/c prank flashlight that we can remotely turn off (so that the flashlight 'fails' in a dark scary room) and we have some old creepy porcelain dolls that we want to remotely activate (heads turning, arms moving, that sort of thing) but we're looking for more ideas. We will invite the guest to inspect the house with one of us while the other person controls the pranks and gags.  Anyway, if you have any great ideas or know of some good resources I would love to catch your feedback. Thanks! DAZU

Halloween Pinboard

Need a cheap and simple idea to decorate your home for halloween? I just swapped all photos on my pinboard with horror related ones. I just got them from Google Image Search and printed it in a photo shop. If you like, you could also have a look at my other halloween projects (see my profile). ;-) Spooky Halloween! Mischka

See quantum weirdness for yourself!

An article in ScienceWorld reports on a proposed experimental setup which would make quantum entanglement visible to the naked eye! Using stimulated emission (the same effect that causes lasing), a group led by Nicolas Gisin of the University of Geneva proposes to amplify one photon of an entangled pair to a level that is visible to the naked eye. Observers watching through polarizing filters would then be able to directly see the "spooky action at a distance" of quantum correlations.

Parys Mountain

General interest: I went there (surface) this year, it's pretty-much dead (due to heavy-metal contamination), a spooky "outer-space" sort of place. Near Amlwch on Anglesey (that's Wales) The site contains several mines worked since the Bronze age, it was once the largest copper mine in the world. This site has some great photos of the underground levels, recently drained: www.parysmountain.co.uk/ (I nicked an image) note that 1 fathom is 6 feet. Google Earth: W 4o20 '40", N 53o23'10"

This is what happens when you're on the frontpage

Here are graphs of the stats of two of my instructables. They clearly shows that being on the frontpage or featured in the weekly newsletter really gives you a boost. The Marble Clock (the graph with 0-5000 as the scale for pageviews) got in the frontpage as Popular in the afternoon the 14'th, you can clearly see the rate increase of pageviews. The Spooky Led Lamp (the graph with 0-10000 as the scale for pagevews) made it to the Weekly Newsletter sent to the subscribers in the eventing the 14'th. As can be seen on the graph the numbers of pageviews increased really fast at the next few hours then went back to the normal pace again. In contrast to what happened with the Marble Clock this instructable also got a real boost in the ratings due to the newsletter. Here's a link to the Instrugraph Instructable.

Cannot access PDF documents

Yo Membership people: Cannot access PDF documents. Click on PDF icon loops you back to login window, reinsert info loops all over again.  Can log into profile.  Profile showed I still a PRO member.  Pdf access worked until a few months ago when I changed banks and an automatic message sent to instructables caused an account cancelation. I sent a message explaining this and received a reply that I still had access until next year.  I really want the pdf for the Spooky Telsa Spirit Radio so I spent the money for another PRO Membership.  It now says I am a member until 2012!  So why cannot I access pdf files?  Also if I am a PRO Memeber how can I get rid of the ads? If pdf's are becoming a problem, will you make the instructables available via DVD disks or books like Volume 1? By the way how do I get a reply? The forum stuff stinks.  This is all frustrating since you have a darn good product! Thanks Tommyt

Halloween Decoration Contest Winners - 2012

With a whooping 365 Halloween Decorations entered, the competition for this year's contest was a tough one. The editors had a hard time narrowing down the finalists. However, with the help of 13 spooky judges, winners were chosen. I would like to congratulate the winners, and thank everyone who put in the time and effort to throw their hat into the cauldron. Anyhow… on with it… I am pleased to announce that this year's winning decoration is flaming_pele!'s build of a Giant Tentacle Monster. This project was selected by the judges because it was original, fun, well-documented and approachable. With easy-to-find materials, they demonstrated that anyone can menace their neighborhood with a giant cartoonish tentacle monster. Their technique was clever, and the results were great. I foresee this inspiring more large creations next year. Speaking of which, all of our second place winners put new spins on old classics. Noelportugal made a traditional Magic Mirror, but gave it a new spin with built-in candy dispenser. HaHaBird mashed Tetris and jack-o-lanterns together to make Pumpktris, which is unlike anything we have seen before. And of course, there is kcli's the Hearse-Style Carriage which resurrects old-fashioned horse carriage as a creepy and stylish hearse. The runner-ups show how eclectic this years entries were. From traditional grim reaper decorations, to stat-of-the-art glow-in-the-dark 3D-printed ghost mobiles, we ended up with some pretty interesting decorations this year. Be sure to not only check out all of the awesome finalists, but the rest of this year's entries. Now that Halloween is over, it means that you have a full year to think about what to do next year. I now that I already am. While installing the foam spewing pumpkin, I already figured out what my decoration is going to be for next year. Let's just say that it is going to be a blast. -Randy
