Start Rating!!!

A lot of people are complaining about the new Rating Sytem. Well, here's the thing, if you don't rate, these ratings won't become balanced, and they'll stay that way forever!Rating isn't hard, just choose how many stars an Ible or topic deserves!Even if its just a forum topic, rate it!It won't take your time! We need to get these ratings moving! If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.

Getting started!

Hello everyone, I just found this site last night and lets just say that i didnt get to much sleep! A quick introduction about me. Im 24y old guy from sweden. I loved taking electronic stuff apart as a kid (not so much putting them back together) and i did some experementing in school but it soon faded. I then went on to become an electrician(house/construction installations) and have been working as one for 6 years now but never really went back into electronics. The last few years LED's has been getting big as the main lightsource in our homes but the comercial solutions aren't always satisfactory, hence my renewed interest in this. Only thing i've done outside of work is built some computers but never really modding. As if i didnt  have enough to do in my spare time i now wanna get into this, so i have a few questions on how to get started: - What basic tools do i need? Soldering kit, precision screwdrivers, multimeter......more? -What store is best for getting supplies/tools? Is it ebay or do you prefer a specific company? Any site that is better/worse to use living in sweden? Also should i stock up on basic components or just get what i need for my projects? -Is there any other communities that supplements this one? Any Swedish sites perhaps? -Anything else i should know before buying some stuff and starting? Right know im mostly focused on mods involving LED and lighting in general. Suggestions about that? Sorry if this is posted in the wrong section but i didnt really find any better place. I know this might not be as exciting as the other questions in here but all input is greatly appreciated!  TLDNR: What do i need to know/have to get started modding electronics? Cheers!

New Start

I think at this point in time of my life, ive lost my ability to create well designed weapons with knex. But Ive always been fascinated by the ball machines, and I would like to pursue further into my knex hobby to make them. But my skill when it comes to this is at rock bottom. I have no experience, and no concept on how to design anything for these. I also need to buy more parts to get started on it and be able to finish it without worrying about missing some parts. I havent gone anywhere guys, just had some time off since I couldnt make anything good. I miss all of you guys, and hopefully, I can get something going and youll see more from me :) -SW-

Starting a country...?

Okay, basic rundown: I've always wanted to start a country, and have gone from varying degrees of seriousness on the topic (from declaring my bedroom the kingdom of shirts to writing a constitution for Travisland [seriously]) Now, obviously there are several issues as to the actual seceding process. I'm in Canada, and I am currently researching how Canada gradually broke off from England, and I am planning to apply the same concept. Does anyone want to help with the research of building a constitution, border laws, etc? Assuming it actually works, you will get a passport, likely a government position (or something to that degree) and will be able to come and go from the country at any time (although if it does work we legally need permanent residences). Is anyone interested, even if all we get out of this is some education?

Easier starting chainsaw?

Is it possible to make a pull-cord chainsaw (Stihl 029) easier to start?  I'm in my mid-seventies and have lost much of my former strength, as such, I have extreme difficulty starting the saw initially. Once it's warmed-up, no problema, but after sitting for a few days, well—.  Anyone have a suggestion (aside from buying an electric saw which will not be practical, because of the cord length)?

Trouble Starting in Electronics

I want to start getting in to making electronics, but I can't seem to know where to start. I recently bought an Arduino Starter Kit hoping to learn, but while I can understand and do all the listed projects, I can't comprehend why things are the way they are. For example, I don't understand how to choose the right resistors for lets say LEDs. Sure I could just pick the resistors I need for one of the projects, but that isn't going to help when I start my own projects. I feel that my main problem is that I do not understand electricity and circuits, but I can't seem to find good reference material to learn from.

Getting Started At DIY

Hi all I am a mechanical engineering by training. I've worked with Arduinos and loved them a lot. In college, I helped build two race cars in the Formula SAE competitions, and I worked in mechanical workshops doing milling, shaping, grinding, using lathes etc. I loved all of it. However, while I imagine my ideal self spending his weekends in his garage restoring his classic british sports car, I struggle to get excited enough to take on any projects at all. For instance, I have dreams of building my own go kart, writing a smartphone app, building a few home automation things that I have in mind etc, but I lack the courage to start, because I know I will leave it half done. The other thing is that, despite my training, I lack the engineering bent of mind to build things 'properly'. That streak where you choose the right option when designing something. It's hard to describe, but you can tell what was built by an engineer and what wasn't. I would like to ask you, what are your pro tips to getting started and having a long and successful unpaid, voluntary career in weekend hobby projects? Any and all advice is welcome, as are harsh words telling me to 'just freaking pick something and start'. What is your story? How'd you get into liking to build stuff? Did it come naturally to all of you, or did you have to force yourself at first until you started loving it? Thanks in advance.

Suggestions are also welcome! Thanks in advance! :p

How to start with Technology?

Like building things all by yourself, with batteries and such things. I'm a beginner in technology, I only know some programming on computers, and a bit about how computers are build, but that's all! I hope someone can help me! :) Thanks In Advance! :)

Start a makerspace in Tampa?

I have been trying to turn a 3bedroom house with a big yard into a makerspace but the only 2 interested groups wanted an exclusive agreement, despite FREE rent, and didn't seem to want to do much except collect fees from other people. How can I get creative people who want to collaborate, innovate, and learn and DO? It could certainly be an incubation for sustainable business that need a place to experiment, or a lab or anything, I just don't want it to be a constant power struggle with no plan, and no results.

Getting started with arduino?

So I'm going to purchase an arduino Uno soon to make some robots. I already know how to program so that shouldn't be a worry, but I'm not exactly sure what motors and motor controllers work together. I want to get a geared motor for higher torque. Can someone point me in the right direction for motors and motor controllers. Also wheels to fit on those motors would be good too. With the arduino and all I would like to keep this under $100 and I only really need 2 motors.

Capasitive start and run.?

I have build this circuit and works great for a 12v pc fan on the bench for PWM. When i hooked this into my ATX power supply to regulate the fan speed the fan doesn't like to run unless i touch some portion of the pcb i build the circuit on. I spliced the wires from the ATX power supply into the PWM circuit, then out of the PWM circuit back to the fan. I guess its a  capactive issue. What could be the fix for this? The other An EE suggested i add several diodes inline to slow the fan down....hhmm maybe

Leadscrew stops and starts?

I'm trying to make a cnc plotter similar to this: http://hackaday.com/2013/10/17/unorthodox-home-made-cnc-machine/ I have changed some things though: I'm using aluminum rod with washers super glued to the end, another washer, and two nuts instead of flange bearings (brushings) and two nuts, I'm using 3/8 rod, pololu steppers (#1209), and slightly different conduit clamps.  I'm using a wooden dowel with a half-inch hole, and aluminum and nylon spacers tapped and with a setscrew to act as a motor coupler.  The problem I'm having is that as the motors rotate, even continuously in one direction, the gantry stops and starts moving.  It moves 1/16th of an inch per rotation, as it should, but within each rotation it moves quickly, probably 5/6 of the way within the first 180 degrees, then moves just the remainder in the last 180.  The motors do not stall, miss steps, or change speed, but the gantry does.  There is almost no backlash, and little play.  Any ideas whats wrong?

Getting started for a beginner

Hi there, I hope this is in the right forum. So, I have always liked to work with my hands, seeing things people made and thinking "I WOULD LOVE TO GET INTO THAT" and I recently decided to make good on my wishes and wish to really get into the DIY scene. I'm looking for help on what tools I should get my hands on to start working on things. An example of something I wish tor re-create would be this: https://www.instructables.com/id/Portable-PC-project-inspired-by-Shadowrun-Cyberdec/ I'm not looking for help on what it takes to make up the end product but rather the tools one would use consistently to make everything fit and what not. Is there a sort of beginners toolbox or something of that sort I should look into getting? Sorry if this is confusing, I'm confusing even myself a bit, haha. On a side note, does everyone here have a garage they work in? I'm in NYC and as many of you know it's not the easiest place to have a workbench. Can anyone recommend me places you would go to work on projects? Thank you in advance.

Getting started with PICAXE? Answered

I want to get started using PICAXE microcontrollers after using both PICs and AVRs before, and I have already learned the BASIC language, it's pretty easy, as the name would suggest. My main interests with them are that they can be easily programmed with two resistors and a 3-pin serial cable, they are easy to program and have ADC inputs, and also audio functionality. What would be a good place to get started, I was looking at the 08M, but it looks like it was recently discontinued and replaced by the M2. The reason I don't really want to move on is because I have just learned the pinouts and functions for the 08M, and also a lot of projects here on instructables utilize it. I was looking at building the tic tac tunes.I also noticed that it has the markings "12F683", so does this mean I could just buy a pic 12F683 chip and use it as a picaxe? Are they identical or is there a subtle difference in them. I also noticed that the audio functionality seems to be very limited in that the smaller chips only do polyphonic notes, and the mid sized chips only do mp3 from eeprom, and only the very large 40 pin chips do audio. What is the smallest chip that supports a full range sound file. Memory shouldn't be too much of a problem as the clip is only about a second long, so one with 256k should be fine, as long as it features internal audio. My last question is what should I buy, as in chips (universal and common experimentation chips), and any other accessories I may need. By the looks of things, all I need is the chip, a headphone socket, resistors, and a download cable.

PDF Downloads Not Starting

I primarily paid for my pro membership to be able to download a PDF version of projects I would like to use later. I have tried to download several. I can usually download one without any problems. When I attempt to download a second, the PDF screen loads, a PDF loading "Circle" appears on the lower left. The PDF never downloads. Rebooting my PC seems to work.  I should not need to reboot my PC to get a second PDF from your site...  I can go to another site with a PDF download, and download just fine. On a related note, there appears to be an issue with my user staying logged in. It appears that I have to log in each time I wish to download a project. All in all, not a pleasant experience for a site that I paid money to access this particular feature.

Well, it's a start.....

Just as it got warm here, our dual fan, window fan gave up the ghost.....but I wasn't about to just throw it out without a fight..... First step, most likely suspect, since there was no strain on the cord, was the switch, an old OLD 4 position mechanical clunker that sparked visibly in the dark under the Bakelite case. That seemed ok (it was screwed together so disassembly was a snap).  Testing continuity gave mixed results.  So, I found the place where I has spliced a longer cord into the short wire to the switch and viola'!   After only 45 minutes of getting absolutely filthy with dust, I found the broken wire.   This time, instead of just soldering and taping, I put some heat shrink tube in line before soldering them back together.   Now I have my fan back......ok, so I guess I am not completely worthless yet :-)
