Story Type?

Okay, I really like the "How to ship a tiger to Canada" story, and I'd like to know if that type of story (genre, if you will) has a name). Also, I think it would be fun to try making my own, so if anyone (Guppie?) has any tips, I'd be grateful. Thanks!

A Story of Mine:

I've been a working on a tale for quite a while now. I've managed to finally write the proluge (like 1 page lol), and I'd appreciate it if you had a looksee and tell me what you thinkee. It's a fantasy/sci-fi story about a guy who gets himself drawn into an alternate universe full of elves, vampires, dragons, and tings that go bump in the night... Please excuse my rather poor story-writing skills, my brain runs on a graphics-based OS, not text-based.

Driving Stories

I got my permit a couple of days ago. Driving just feels right. Any of you new drivers? Got any white knucked parents screaming WE'RE GONNA DIE! digging their fingernails into the dashboard yet? Do any of the rest of you have good stories of back-in-the-day driving or now? Funniest thing a cop has said?

Continue the story!

A few days ago, in registration, our form tutor decided to play a game! She gave us an opening phrase, and we had to say a word each going one after another! so I decided to do this here.RULESYou are only allowed to say one word, and may not reply to your own posts. You can reply to an opening, or make a new 1st opening. That's it!So the starting phrase is...One day, my friend Jim and I...Have fun, and I hope we get some interesting results! The Jamalam

Have Any Good Stories to Share?

Got any interesting experiences you'd like to share? Scary? Happy? You get my point, right? Kind of like these:https://www.instructables.com/forum/Crazy-things-youve-done/https://www.instructables.com/forum/Driving-Stories/https://www.instructables.com/forum/Ever-saved-a-guys-life/Here's a scary experience I've had:. Some friends and I were bored so we took a walk to the fire station. We brought along some markers and cardboard and decided to kill time with some harmless Hijinks. We held up signs that said "Free Lemonade" with an arrow pointing in a random direction. People honked their car's horn or waved, it was all good and fun (We were in fifth grade BTW). About fifteen minutes in I hear screeching and my friend yells "RUN!". Not knowing what was happening, I look behind me and see a huge cloud of white smoke. We ditched the signs and booked it out of there. For a few seconds I didn't know what we were running from, but I could tell by the look on my friend's face it was bad. When I asked him later, he said that the guy driving the car looked pissed. He said the smoke was from the car pulling a hard U turn and accelerating towards us. We knew the car was chasing us so we ran into the bushes by the driveway of a cop's house. We heard a car coming up the driveway a few feet from us, and got really freaked out. We saw that it (thankfully) was the cop's patroll car. We ran up to him and told him about the car. He said he saw the smoke and called it in on the radio.

Crazy things you've done?

One of the crazy things I did was take nails out of the door hinges to a shed with my friend. Not too long ago the door fell down.... One of the not so smart things I have done is when we had a storm this winter I went bike riding. We probably shouldn't have done that but oh well...

Logic Problems

I changed the topic name because I think so people might think of logic problems as a programming question or electronic question, so some people wouldn't bother looking at the topic. Think you're good at logic? Here are some problems: Title: Gorillas Enjoy Ballet Gorillas are the only animal that enjoys ballet. All animals can fly to mars. Scotch brooms bloom every Thursday all over mars. Only those few animals that do not play solitaire are immune to hay fever. No animal that travels in leaky rowboat ever has the penultimate word in a verbal discourse. Scotch broom in bloom is what gives animals hay fever. Those that do not handle hot ice cubes travel to town in leaky rowboats. All animals that have the penultimate word in a verbal discourse play solitaire. No animal that enjoys ballet handles hot ice cubes. What conclusion can you draw from the above information? Logic Puzzle number 2 This one takes up 2 pages, so I'm going to skip the story and say the logic parts. Basically this one guy thinks he smarter than gods or something so they give him a trial. He's trying to go toward the treasure and not die. Split in the road number 1, at least one sign is false, one path leads to a serpent. Path A: "This path leads to the serpent." Path B: "The sign at path A is true." Which way should he go? Split in the road number 2, 2 signs are true, one is false Path A: "The sign at Path B is true" Path B: "Path A is not the one to follow" Path C: "This is the Path to follow" Which way should he go? Split in the road number 3, 2 signs are true, one is false Path A: "Path B is the one to follow: Path B: "Path C is the one to follow, unless it's Path A" Path C: "Neither Path A nor B is the correct Path" Which way should he go? There are now 3 houses, one containing the treasure, there's a sign infront of each house. 2 signs are false, but one is true. House A: "C is not the house to enter unless THIS house is not the one to enter" House B: "The sign at house A is false" House C: "Either house A or house B is the one to enter" Which house should he choose? Please write your answer in the form of the path/house in order, for example ABCB would be path 1 is A, Path 2 is B, etcetcetc. On a totally different note (I don't wanna make another topic), can you use the cable that you use with a boarduino to make an avr programmer? If so, can you post an example schematic of how to hook up a chip.

Horror Stories and Poems

Hey, everybody! I decided to submit a forum for scary stories and poems. Please post something scary, but nothing longer than a short story. I may add more scary things to this forum (in the comments), so you might want to check back on this every once in a while. To start, here's a poem I came up with. Please enjoy. Horror Work 1 He'll follow and chase, Slowly driving you nuts. Steal your mind from your brain Till you're only a husk.   You'll get sicker and sicker; It grows worse with the years. Then finally the man In the dark suit appears.   His garb is the blackest. His skin is quite white. The tendrils wrap 'round, You can't put up a fight.   He draws you close in, And begins with his work. As he removes you from life, You shake and you jerk. And then he is done, This thing with no face, And takes with him your body To some strange unknown place.

One of My Stories

I'm usually not one to write but...I don't know I guess I just had an idea for a story that might be good if I continued it. Right now the one below is still being worked on theres some parts that still don't sound right or are missing something. I also really shouldn't say "stories" because truly this is my only one. Anyway, just thought I'd share it. Any ideas for how to take the plot further would be greatly appreciated. Here it goes: My over-active imagination was running away with me again. I've woken up twice in the last hour to something...I can't explain the sound. I just want to sleep until morning and have been doing my best to ignore it, but it just keeps getting louder. Alright, thats it. I shoved off the covers and expertly dodged the piles of clothes that seem to grow bigger over night, to the door. Slowly, I turned the knob. It creaked. I breathed sharply through my teeth hoping nobody heard. Then again, who couldn't hear whatever that racket is? I nudged open the door and slipped into the hallway. It was dark but I wouldn't dare risk turning on the light. Luckily, the big bay window downstairs cast a light over the steps. Jeez, I never knew a house could have so many things that creaked. So I took the stairs two at a time to just cut down on noise. From where I stood, at the base of the stairs, It sounded like the noise was coming from the kitchen, though it was muffled. As I walked into the kitchen, I looked around. Nothing too out of the ordinary. Plates are still stacked up in the sink, waiting to be cleaned. The trash still needs taken out, but what's that sound? Wait, the trash...oops. I don't want that to still be here when Dad wakes up. I was supposed to take it out after dinner, well guess I'll take it out now... I bent down and jerked up the bag. It seemed heavier than normal but I didn't take that into mind. We did have a big dinner that night. I opened the back door to the night. The air was crisp and cool. It was the middle of fall and already it gets to be almost freezing at night. I shivered then walked quickly down the steps and down the sidewalk, careful to not let the bag scrape the ground. Heaving the heavy bag in the trash can, I looked around. It's been awhile since I've been up this late. I'm glad I'm usually not, it's eerie out here. Everything is quiet, there's not a person in sight, the road seems to just go on into the darkness. What makes it especially creepy though is that now that same sound is coming from the trash can in front of me. I just stood and stared. I have to see what it is. What if it is something alive and it needs help? Shakily I reached out and pulled off the lid. It fell to the ground with a loud clang, but I don't care. Now my curiosity was over coming the fear. Slowly, I reached up, untied the bag and looked inside. Then woke up. I reached down and unplugged my blaring alarm clock, not trying to even look for the button that would shut it up. Groggily, sitting up, I remembered the dream. I've been having weird dreams like that. Ever since we moved into our new...well new to us, but still old house. So I tried not to give it much thought. As I lumbered out of bed I could smell the aroma of breakfast come from the kitchen. I was hungry and the smell didn't help me whatsoever. I quickly pulled on a pair of jeans and the shirt I wore yesterday, then rushed out of my room, glancing at the mirror in the hall. Staring back at me was a kid who looked like he hadn't slept in years. My black hair was out in every direction and I had a looked like I was about to fall asleep right then and there. Well, good thing it's a Saturday! I was just starting to turn around to head downstairs when I saw my dad at the bottom of the steps holding a trash bag. "Crud", I said under my breath. I guess my dream was right... Silently I walked down the stairs. He didn't have to say a word. I took the bag out of his hands and headed out back. Lifting up the lid to the trash can I remembered my dream. What was in that bag? I looked around quickly. No one in sight. I undid the strings and looked inside the dark bag. Nothing but trash. Sigh. I almost wished there was something in there. Just to add some excitement to my week. With a dad being an ex-NAVY Sgt. He liked to keep everything on schedule and organized. for him everyday was nearly the same. Me? I'm anything but organized. Him being like that bugged me. I like change once in a while. Not just the same humdrum stuff everyday. But I'm used to it. "Matt?"-I nearly knocked over the trash can. "Are you OK?" My sister was standing beside me with a curious look on her face. I hadn't realized I had my head still in the trash bag for nearly five minutes. "Yeah, I'm fine." She still had that weird look, " Why did you have your head in the trash?" "I...uh...how 'bout you go inside and get some breakfast?" She didn't say anything. She just slowly turned around, still confused. For once she didn't keep asking me. Normally, If she asked something she wouldn't shut up until she got an answer. I shook my head. Why do I always do that? I get thinking about something and then sort of zone off. It's embarrassing sometimes, like just now. "Matt, get in here!" Bah, I did it again. I ran inside. It looked like I missed breakfast. All the plates were put up besides mine. I sighed, and then threw my plate in the microwave. “ Hey, Trash Sniffer!” I turned around , my younger brother Aaron was looking up at me grinning. “ What were you doing in the trash?” “ I was…um…thinking.” “In the trash?” “You won’t leave until you get an answer, will you?” He just stood there, still grinning. “ Fine, I was daydreaming again about a dream I had.” I glanced at him. He now had a more serious look. “ You said you didn’t have those dreams anymore.” Then I realized I shouldn’t have said that. Remembering how when I first told him about the weird dreams and how they about scared him to death. He would wake up every morning worrying about if I had a bad dream. I ended up lying to him that I didn’t have those dreams and that he helped make them go away. Now, I could tell he was already starting to worry. I quickly said, “ No, no, not one of those dreams. It was a nice one and I was just trying to remember it. “Really?” He said glancing up at me. I nodded. “Ok, I just didn’t want you to have bad dreams again.” And with that he turned and walked away. Crazy 6 year olds.

K'NEX war stories

In here we tell stories about past knex wars. For instance: What happened? How many people where there? Who won? (if any) What did you do? What did the other team do? Where did you do it? How was it all planned? Etc... And everything like that. So I hope that there are going to be some good stories.

help writing a story?

I know that this type of question has been absolutely done to death (where did that expression come from anyway?) but I have a premise for a science fantasy story. I have a skeleton of an Idea of what the story will be, but here's what I have so far. Time: unspecified. Disaster: sometime in the distant past, a disaster the likes of which hadn't been seen since the biblical day's of old was swiftly falling upon the land. Somewhere in in the middle of the pacific ocean, a poisonous green fog begins to seep off of an unremarkable island, volcanic in origin, about a square mile in size. This wouldn't have been a problem, since such a small amount of fog would have eventually lost itself in the vastness of the planets atmosphere, and the stuff it was made of was largely biodegradable through a variety of ways found in nature. So it was sensationalized for a while, with the usual kerfluffle, and then it was quietly forgotten as some new crisis arose, banished to the shady corners of science, with only the ocassional visit from some obscure science foundation sponsored trip. And that was that. That is, until, somebody noticed it was growing. And  sure enough, it seemed that, contrary to what the specialists said, it was slowly, steadily, patiently growing, getting thicker and thicker. Eventually, (about four years) an expedition was chartered to go into the now opaque cloud. Here is one adventurers account of what it was like. " After a looong and boring flight, we neared the destination. Looking out, all I could see was what looked like a big greenish-brown mound. the truly weird thing about it was that it's edges weren't very well defined and looked like what you would expect something like a giant cloud of steam would look like that was left to dissipate, but there was a definite edge to it that billowed like a great sheet of canvas in the wind" Note: this is not the end of the story and setting, just my present atention span. I promise to include more of the setting and premise in the comments, but for now i'm completely fried.

My mystery story

I'm in 8th grade and I have to write a mystery, please leave feedback and suggestions. I just want to make sure that this mystery would make sense to someone else, someone else who didn't write it. A rich man laid dead in his room with a will next to his body. He had many cuts and died from blood loss. As the police asses the situation they notice a knife next to him, the police thought suicide. Then they noticed a bloody will next to him, on the will it said that he would leave everything he owns to his butler. The inspector, inspector Higgins, found that it was odd the late Mr. Light left nothing to his wife, Mrs. Light who was sobbing next to the inspector. “Where were you when your husband was murdered?” asked inspector Higgins. “I was out shopping, I was getting him a Christmas gift.” Answered Mrs. Light “Do you have proof of this?” “Why yes, yes I do! Here’s a receipt from Kronix, the fancy watch store.” “Hmmmm. Here on the receipt you bought it about an hour ago, there would be have plenty of time for you to have commit this murder.” “How dare you say such a thing!?! I loved my husband, and I can explain about the time frame, Kronix is about an hour away, so it takes me time to get here!” “Ok, ok, ok, but what about this butler of yours, where is he?’ “I don’t know, he should be in the house.” The inspector and the police searched the house. The inspector came to a closet door and tried to open it, but it only opened an inch. “Officer, please help me open this door,” said the inspector. After much pushing they got the door open enough so that the slim inspector could slip into the room where he saw a shocking sight. “The butler’s in here, he was laying next to the door, and he appears to be dead from cuts.” Paramedics came rushing in . “He’s not dead, he’s merely unconscious, and we must get him to a hospital. A day later when the butler made enough of a recovery to talk. “Mrs. Light killed Mr. Light, she started slashing at me, but then I ran into the closet, which was foolish. She attacked me in there and I passed out, she must have thought I was dead.” Whispered the butler. “You’re under arrest for the murder of Mr. Light.” Announced the inspector towards the butler. How did he know the butler killed Mr. Light? The solution: When Inspector Higgins found the butler he was laying next to the door. According to the butler’s story he was being attacked in the closet, which means the murder would have to leave, which would have been impossible because the butler’s body kept the door from opening.

Your War Stories

Everyone who has played war simulation games probably has a story to tell, I know I have a few. I would like to hear about your past experiences. This being the internet, anybody can claim to have done anything. Please try to be honest in your stories. Paintball:I was pinned down behind a tree that was barely the width of my body. Three enemies were bunkered up behind a felled tree in front of me, all of them shooting. I could hear their bullets whizzing inches from my head, and I was getting covered in splatter from the paintballs breaking across the tree. If I moved even an inch, I would be exposed. I was completely helpless. One of my buddies ran up to help, taking cover on my right. He was gunned down in less than a minute. I was trapped behind that tree for what seemed like an eternity. Luckily, one of my teammates (we call him Rambo) flanked the bunker, ran up from behind, and shot all of them in the back. When I looked at the cover I was behind, the tree and surrounding area was completely painted. I was on a speedball course behind cover, exchanging fire with (of all people) my brother. I look up, and he is charging up the field directly at me. Panicked, I take some shots at him and nailed him in a very sensitive area. He immediately went down and stayed down for several minutes, rolling around in pain. I captured it on my Gun-cam, you can see the paintball hit it's mark.(I've got plenty of good paintball stories, but I want to keep this short.)Airsoft:We were playing Ambush: VIP, and I was the VIP (No gun. I die, we loose). The course consisted of trails in the woods which lead to an open field. I had to go through the woods and across the field to a designated endpoint. The first leg was uneventful, we saw no action through the trails. When we reached the tree line, we decided it was best to book it across the field. We ran to the tree line, my bodyguard about ten feet ahead of me. He was the first to break the tree line. As soon as he did, he was shot up the leg and chest from near point blank range by a full auto MP5 and toppled over. As soon as I saw this I tried to do three things at once (thinking Oh Spit!): come to a sudden stop from a full on sprint, change direction, and book it in the opposite direction. Let's just say I face-planted and got shot up on the ground. I was stalking a guy who was facing me, staying just inside his peripherals (at least ten feet away). I shot him and, knowing the noise would attract others, immediately went prone in my ghillie suit. I was right, his teammate showed up to investigate. I took him out easily. This attracted a third teammate. I waited a good five minutes and, thinking he had gone, stood up to flank him. Turns out I stood up right in front of him and was subsequently lit up like a Christmas tree. (All these stories may make it sound like I suck at paintball/airsoft, but the most memorable events are often your worst.)Edit.I actually ended up writing an English paper on one of these stories. The Clearing A ski mask pulled over his face, Robert steadied his AK-47. The surrounding shadows merged with his dark sweatshirt and jeans. Shifting his weight, he anxiously scanned the path ahead. Both of us were sitting ducks here, he knew it. We had come to a fork in the road, providing us with two options. We could continue down the well-worn dirt path, or divert to a small, overgrown trail. "Come on." Robert whispered, eying the smaller trail, "Let's go."The objective was simple; navigate a maze of trails through the woods, cross an open field, and reach an endpoint on the other side. There was just one small problem; I must make it to the endpoint alive. I was the designated V.I.P., forbidden to carry a firearm and it was game over if I died. It was Robert's duty to escort me to the endpoint in one piece. Robert disappeared into the overgrown trail. Waiting ten seconds, I continued after him. Pushing aside ferns and thorn bushes, Robert and I slowly advanced. We knew it would be safe, they wouldn't expect us to follow this trail. Nonetheless, we kept a wary eye on the trees and bushes ahead. It was unusually hot, and I was beginning to sweat under my stuffy ghillie suit. The surrounding woods were eerily silent, a calm before the storm. As if on cue, there was a rustle off to our right. Immediately, Robert raised and lowered his palm, swinging his rifle in the direction of the sound. Catching his signal, I crouched low to the ground, adrenaline seeping through my veins. Tense, we waited for the seemingly inevitable. More rustling, this time accompanied by flapping. Robert's finger tightened against the trigger. A form shot out of the bushes, rapidly ascending to the branches above. It is just a bird. Sighing with relief, we rose and continued down the trail. We arrived at the edge of the woods, beyond which lay a small clearing. A mere one hundred feet separated us from the awaiting endpoint on the other side. One hundred feet of open field, it might as well have been a thousand. Robert and I came to the decision that we run across as fast as possible. We would be completely exposed, our fate placed at the mercy of the clearing. Drawing a deep breath, Robert sprinted toward the tree line. I followed, maintaining a distance of ten feet. Approaching a full sprint, Robert burst into the clearing. He managed to complete five strides before a sharp rat-tat-tat shattered the silence. Time slowed, Robert cried out in pain and toppled into the tall grass. He had taken several hits up the chest and legs at point blank range. A dark figure rose from the bushes directly ahead, looming above the surrounding flora. I was sprinting, full speed, to my doom. My mind went blank, overridden by three instincts: stop, turn around, and run. I attempted to complete all of these tasks simultaneously: come to a dead stop from a full sprint, turn one hundred and eighty degrees, and run. Momentum sternly disagreed, sending me in an awkward flying flop to the ground. Stunned, I lay on the forest floor at the edge of the woods. Regaining my senses, I felt several bee stings crawl up my back. I was hit, game over.

Or just laugh at the annoyed faces of grammar pendants as you watch Steven fry shame them.  Now recently I made an instructable, it was named and "Breathe new life into an old computer" and being the grammar illiterate person I am, combined with the fact the article was written out of pure boredom, I misspelled the article title in two different places. Instead of "Breathe new life into an old computer" I wrote "Breath of new life into a old computer". The reason is, after writing the article, I felt the original title of "A breath of new life into a old computer" didn't really sound good. So I axed the A and called it a day (Rhyme not intended). It was late and without another thought I hit publish and eagerly awaited its appearance on the new ibles page. Nothing happened for 20 minutes, so I went to bed without a second thought. Maybe the database server just crashed or something :P The next day, after a long day of school, I eagerly sit down at my computer and watch youtube... After enjoying at least a few hours of Pwediepie screaming at disfigured goats and Linus (attempting) to colour a $500 motherboard I decide to check my Instructables page. A few clicks to my current Instructables page and WOAH. I see the featured banner draped proudly across the front of my project. My eyes dart down, desperately looking for a view counter and then they find it, "10 thousand views!" I cry. My mouse cursor automatically clicks, my world in slow motion, I scroll down... 3 comments greet me. I just sit there, mouth wide open. A crazy thought slams right into my face, my mouse cursor waddles over to the corner of the screen and suddenly the homepage sits there, my project stands in its little box, like an expensive toy, on display for all to see. My mind is racing, In disbelief. I look around, a hidden camera maybe, I shout upstairs to my brother "good prank". But all I hear is a surprised moan, "what?!" he shouts.  It took me a few hours for anything, whether it be ME being featured, or the chicken I had for dinner, to sink in. But eventually it did and I took a some rotting fleshes advice, Keep Calm and Carrion. The last thing on my mind at this point was spell checking, no one in the comments had pointed anything out, and well... I couldn't see anything wrong. It's like that thing when you're looking for something in that horrific mess you call a fridge, after spending what seems like hours looking at every little detail you still can't find the butter. Then your girl friend, Wife or Mum comes along and after giving you a lecture on tidiness they find that one thing you're looking for instantly... Anyway, I decide in the spirit of things I will go and enjoy some facebook, I take a trip to the Instructables facebook page and see my article, AWESOME! I open up the comments section and... Correcting my grammar Correcting more of my grammar I'm not an English professor Correcting my grammar Correcting my grammar Someone who doesn't understand that: 1. I am not American, 2. Americans are smart and awesome people Correcting my grammar Someone who uses such bad grammar that I can't even figure out what they are saying   Now at the sight of this I quickly ran back to my article and changed the picture and title, on facebook... It doesn't update. I have learned my lesson, proofread and double check your article, before you post!  What can you take away from this? What I have learnt:  Theres no 'Be Nice' policy on the internet Proofread your work! Admins are humans and might not pick up on a spelling mistake Write every ible like its the best one you have ever made, because you never know, your ible might be featured down the road and you will just wish that you double checked that title and fixed that little spelling mistake. Also dont ever use facebook because :( it dosnt update live :P lol The Facebook Post My Instructables

Are you interested in electronic companions such as Hasbro's Furby? Do you like storytelling? If so, I would like to extend an invitation to take part in my research study. The Stories Tell Objects Project aims to understand the role that storytelling plays in people’s interactions with electronic companions - such as Hasbro’s Electronic Furby - and the relationships we form with them. Participation in this study involves responding to scenarios depicting Furbys, and/or completing two brief questionnaires. If you would like to learn more, or are interested in participating in this study, please visit: http://www.storiestellobjects.net/ Thanks! MP3 Bedtime Stories ..... Battery supply???

Hi, new here so please bare with me.....long story cut short. My Grandson is five years old and I thought it would be great, and get him to sleep quicker at night, if I could come up with some method of playing MP3 stories. I know, CD player, etc. nope, at five years old they want to take EVERYTHING apart. So no mains leads, CDs, etc. What I came up with was buy a simple and cheap (£2.99) MP3 player off ebay, pair it with a small battery powered speaker (£5.99) and away we go.....doh!   Both items are amazing and just right for the job BUT both are battery powered (will go flat after he falls asleep and they are left on) and two, they both have on-off switches underneath which stops me mounting them on a surface. Sorry this is going on so long....... What I thought of doing is getting a loooooooong lasting battery source (would 9v last a lot longer) and bringing ing it down to 1.5v (x2 one feed for each device). Then it wouldn't matter if they were left on overnight a few times -  or am I deluded.  Or better still, can anybody please advise?

Road Rash

Alright, folks. It's story time. What sorts of crashes have you (or anyone else you know) been involved in while riding a bike? Has anything ever spectacularly malfunctioned with a motorcycle, scooter, or other two or three-wheeled monstrosity? Seen a big crash? Ever bought a bike that had been wrecked? I've got a couple of stories. Which one to tell first..... Oh, I know! One time our '39 Chief set the garage on fire. This was back in the '60s after my grandpa had bought it for my dad, for a hundred bucks cash. 20 year old collector's motorcycle for that kind of money? What was wrong with it, you ask? A lot of things. It needed restoring, and Gramps ran a hotel at the time, and, in his spare time, an Indian museum. Both of the Native American sort and of the American iron sort. Parts were found, damage was fixed, and the bike given a fresh coat of Indian Red before it was fired up. Ran like a dream. Happy, they shut it off and went to bed. Now at this time, that garage was heated by a gas heater. The cork float in the bike's carb swelled up and got stuck, continuing to let gas fill the float bowl, run out the intake, across the floor, and... you guessed it, over to the pilot light. It was a flash fire, but it destroyed the curtains on the door and put a solid layer of char on that brand new purdy paint. Not much else in the garage was flammable, so the fire died nice and quick. The next morning, grandpa and my dad got up bright and early to get to work on the finishing touches, like air in the tires and a test ride. The found quite a suprise, to say the least.

A good story with Halo stuff in it

Ok, I have an idea. What you do is you type up a story with Halo characters, weapons, gunfights, etc. You can make two different ones: 1. A story with an ending. 2. A story where you start the story, but don't finish it, like a short story. But then, some one else comes in and tells the story from where the other person stopped. To put it simple, lets use two random names, Zack & Dan. Zack starts the story, when he wants to stop, he types "FINISH THE REST", and Dan types "continued from Zack", then types the next part in the story and so on & so forth. Please do not try to tell the story like it goes Zack starts, then Dan, then someone else, then another person tries to tell the story where Dan left off after someone already did that part. Any questions? Then start writing/typing!!!!

Snowpocalypse! Share your stories and pictures!

Have you been buried by the American snowpocalypse? (Or is it snowmageddon?) We Brits thought we had it tough recently, but thirty-eight inches?  That's almost a metre! There are quite a few pictures (more pictures) and stories on the BBC, even another Washington snowball fight (no guns, this time). What about iblers, though?  Can you get to your workshops?

Tell a Story about the Instructables Robot

You might have thought that we built The Instructables Robot, but we actually just discovered it in a corner under some junk one day when we were first building Instructables. We weren't really sure want it was, but after charging its batteries overnight, it turned on, its fan started humming, and it offered to help out. So, we put it in charge of sending emails, and as you know, it has really taken to its job. We're pretty sure the Robot is quite old, but every time we ask it about its past, it always begs off to go send more email. So what do you think is the Robot's story? Who built it? Did it build itself? What do you think it might do in the future? Why does it like the things in its favorites list? Where does it goes every Saturday night at 10:22 PM when we can't seem to find it? Tell a story about the Instructables Robot!

A fisherman told me a strange story... Answered

Ok, a couple years ago I was trying to catch some worms for fishing. I tried looking everywhere, but to no luck. I finally went the easy route, and walked to the local fish and tackle store in order to purchase a dozen worms. I was at the counter, ready to pay for the worms, when the old man there said, "well, you're pretty young. Why don't you catch your own worms instead of buying them?". I said that I had tried, but failed.  At this point, he proceeded to tell me a ludicrous story of how he, as a kid, would stick a pitchfork in the ground after a rain, twang it back and forth, and the worms would all go to the surface (where he would pick em up and put them in a can) WTF? I figured he was just pulling my leg, but I tried it anyway. And what do you know? it works like a charm!  Why does it work?

Put a summary of your story here...

The person will type it in and the person below has to say if they would read it. Think back, think back to when you were younger and you spent every waking moment making up and playing games. What ever you wanted, you had free rein over your thoughts and you would never ever get scared of your fantasies because you had control over them. You would play cops and robbers, pirates, witches and wizards, ghosts, vampires and werewolves, and win just because you made up the rules. Absolutely everything you could think of. Imagine the day all that stopped..when you finally grew up, when you stopped dreaming those magical places you escaped to. Instead your were going to school and starting homework and going on proper outings with your family.Your dreams lay blank..only thinking of the next day. Your life was comfortable. But what would you do when you dreamed again? What would you do when your fantasies became real? Not knowing whether they were real or just a stretch of you imagination. This thrilling tale is about a boy aged 14 years old called Mike Groves, and this is his nightmare! Would you read it.

I saw this on Make this afternoon, and thought I'd pass on a direct link to the creator, Mike Foy.  He's got seven pages of variously brutal, brutish, or just post-apocalyptic Lego minifigs and scenes.  The couplet is especially chilling -- sort of a mashup of Shelley and Kayyam. Thousands of souls with faceless faces Roaming the world in desolate places.

Share your most embarrassing or funniest story.

Confess! You have been guilty of a faux pas at some point in your life. My "dope!" moment was when I responded one night to a work order to the campus police station. I went to the officer's lockers and saw what looked like a small cologne bottle. The bottle was painted black and had no label. I sprayed the contents directly on my face thinking that I was going to smell good. I did not know that it was mace and, that I just sprayed it in my face. I was incapacitated for a few minutes. I was found by my coworkers, blinded and disoriented, trying to find my way around! I was the butt of a joke for quite a while. Well, when you too stop laughing, you may start confessing.

The "truth" about climate change - a little story

Global warming, climate change, jelly fish attacks, changed ocean currents...We all know the highlights from the news but what is the real deal behind all of this?It can't be denied that burning fossil fuels with no regrets has an impact on our globe.CO2 and other gasses or elements have been trapped for thausands of years. We release them all into our atmosphere and while doing so keep adding more harmful stuff. So, of course it is easy to say that if we would have nver used our fossile fuels to this extent then our world would be unharmed and a happy place throughout.Even if we would ignore the impossible task of making it where we are right now without having used any fossile fuels: How much would it be different? If we trust the offical climate data that has been collected then it clearly shows a rise in so called climate changing emissions since our industrial revolution started.Be it data from the ice, core drillings or just sample taken from old canyons - the results are all the same.Since the late 1800's there is a steady rise in emissions, CO2 and all the other things we don't really want in our air.And for good reasons all these green advocates try their best to stop us from doing more harm.Since the 80's we started to actually care more, better engines, catalytic converters, cleaning mechanisms for our industiral waste and chimneys. But did it make any change or difference?About 40 years now some countries try hard to do it right, so this must show up somewhere?!Well it does not.You see countries like the US never really cared about climate or the enviroment if there was a cheaper and easier option.Just check how long it took them to even acknowledge that our climate is changing due to our interference...Then there is China and as we have seen with the olympics they literally have to shut down production so you can see for more than a few km...But the same is true for so many other countries.Like everwhere else the industrial revolutions comes sooner or later and as always the cheapest way is done first and for far too long. And with the delay in reactions and consequences it is now certain that the worst is yet to come.Of course there is also another side to the entire story - nature itself. We destroy it where we can to safisfy our need for being cheap.Ever wondered where all this cheap furniture is coming from?Or all the wood used throughout the world?Rainforests are disappearing, flora and fauna is destroyed. In most cases with a lot of fires as it is still the easiest way to clean up when done. Now add the vulcanic eruptions that increased over the past 20 odd years around the world. And if you dare all the bushfires or natural causes.Combined this causes a higher impact than all our burning of fossile fuels - and it adds to the mix.And this brings us back in time.Taking the records of climete conditions all the way back to before the dinosaurs showed us that we had periods of much higher temperatures than what we might see soon.CO2 level at some periods were so high that the earth literally was a green house. So why did we humans amke it anyway onto this earth if chance were so bad?Species adjust, evolve or go extinct, new ones appear...Well, unless you are a croc or so and really don't care about Darvin and evolution ;)Does that mean we are on the way to become a new species?Sadly no, because we are the cause of all our problems. We now use technology and science to adjust nature and the enviroment to our needs. It gets too hot? Well add an airconditioner, will you!?The ground water is too contaminted to drink? Well, why do you think we invented bottled water?!You need room for new homes? Don't mind the flood planes, just drain them and build, there was no flood in over 30 years...See, even if we would go fully green and honur nature around the world from today on.Even if we try to clean up the mess we already created. The effects of what we did over the last 40 or more years are still in progress and far from over.Like a good stew it keep cooking until it is ready to serve. But strenght comes in numbers!Like a virus we keep multiplying even in areas with very limited ressources. After all, we just import what we need..Natural selection is being eliminated so pharma companies can make a living too. From just over 40 years our "natural" life expectency increased now to well into the 80's.You are not fertile? No problem we have means to fertilise your eggs with the sperm from hubby!Already suffering badly from diabetes, asthma or other chronical illness? No problem, have some kids anyway. And just to top it always make sure to avoid natural foods in favour for processed and artificial ingredients. In nature the weak, the sick, the old, the malformed and incapable are a food source. We took this food source away, keet them around, care for them and make sure really everyone has the same chance in life.In life - but not in nature anymore!Social evolution meant that natural selection was no longer a requirement to ensure a strong "tribe" or hunting party. We compensated the drain on ressources and all pharma companies are still very grateful for this.No this is no weird rant on humanity or the idea of some mad person, it is just the naked reality we like to ignore.A horse breeder will not accept a weak and constanlty sick horse for his breeding stock.A broken leg, like for a cow usually just means the animal is put down. Some dog breeders still prefer to cull a few pups just because the color pattern is not nice enough or the ears are too short.Even if you just breed fish you o through all sorts of troubles to ensure you have the best genes available in your tanks. You think this is already going to far with the ideas, I know :(But we have real world examples highlighting the results of the exact opposite: Inbreeding and ignoring the defects in genes and health. The british royal family destroyed the italian and russin monarchies the same was the spanish and protugise, even impacted on the french. In times when there was no clue about genetic defects or deseases that can be dormant in females but very active in males, the british royalty simply kept providing tainted bloodlines to the other royal familes. No offsprings that are male and of good health meant the end of their monarchies. The british survived by allowing the common folk to join the blue blood lines and now it is common in all the monachrchies left in the world.Remove the carries, provide fresh genes to get a better diversity.Really no offence, but just look at Charles and Camilla ;)Jokes aside: the story of the european monarchies shows what happens if things go too wrong. From hunters a gatherers that either kept healthy or died out we eveloved to having a gene pool that is full of nasty surprises.Again no offence meant in any way or to any person! If we compare our world with a big aquarium than it might have eveloved like this:Once there was a bowl full of plants, guppies and lots of other fish and creatures living on each other.Over time the guppies learnt when the feeding times are and made sure they get most of the food.Slowly the other psecies had not enough room and food anymore, only the hunter had a good linving with the huge supply of guppies. Then the guppies managed to reduce the dangers from all predators around and started to really take off.Soon every guppy had only conerns about having a good life and enough food. The waste got more and more, the sick and ill too.The last hunter able to fight them died off as he too suffered from the wasten the changed enviroment and gnetic defects transfered. Now there is little plants left, guppies everywhere, crap everywhere and even those guppies only living a few months still manages to find a partner to ensure their tainted gene pool spreads into the general population. We have no tank owner getting the balance right again, removing the sick and weak, we humans just keep going strong and if the crap pile gets too high we put grass and houses on top of it....We humans don't like to be compared with fish, a virus or any other lower being for that matter. These hings just don't affect or concern us.And anyone who dares to do so anyway has a long list of nasty words thrown at them.Is it because we humans can't tolerate the truth?Or is because deep inside we all know but refuse to think about it?

Yellow Roses a fairy tale and horror story

I awaken in a place I'm not familiar with. Seems I am in some sort of hospital, the white walls, they look padded, could it be I am here because of something mental? I really haven't a clue. The only thing I really remember is the man, I recently met, what I would call the man of my dreams. I just don't understand why I am here. I guess I will figure it out eventually. In the mean time I will think about my new suitor, this will calm my nerves. We met inocenntly enough, by bumping into each other literally. He was coming out of the dime store as I was going in and we just collided. He was so good looking, with his dark hair, beard, and blue eyes. He looked so good, he actually took my breathe away. After bumping ino him I say," Oh my goodness, I am such a klutz. I am so sorry" He replies," No harm done. I should have been watching where I was going. But it's not every day I bump into some one as beautiful as you. Let's start over, hi, my name is Dillion." Blushing, I answer back, " Strange way to meet some one. I am so sorry. Thank you for the compliment. I guess I at least owe you my name. My name is Laura. Again I am so sorry for bumpimg into you." " No need to apologize, maybe us bumping into each other was destiny. Maybe it meant for this to happen, so we could meet each other. Anyway, I would be honered if I could take you to dinner. How about tonight? We could meet right here, if you like, at least until you get to know me a little better. I want you to be at ease with me, not to think I am Jack the Ripper", then he laughs. " You aren't shy are you? O.K., we will meet here say at seven? I guess the least I can do is give you a chance, so I will see you here at seven." Dillion agreeing, the we part ways and I go back to shopping, but I can't get Dillion off my mind. I am just so excited about our date tonight, I literally can't be still. Soon it is almost six, so I rush back to my apartment to freshen up before I go to meet Dillion. Almost being seven, I rush back to the dime store, I surely don't want to be late for our first date. Arriving I see Dillion is already there, nevously pacing back and forth like an expectant father. I notice he is carrying a bunch of yellow roses, my favorite color. I make sure Dillion sees me so I don't startle him, walking up to him I say," Hi, have you been waiting long?" Dillion says," I been here for a few minutes. May I say you look beautiful. Also, I got you these. I hope you like them. " I am very flattered by the roses. Thank you so much. How did you know I liked yellow?" " Remember when I first met you, you were dressed in all yellow, just like you are now and may I say the yellow looks great on you because of your dark hair. Anyway I figured you like the color because of how you were dressed and it appears I was right. I thought maybe we go out to dinner, then we catch a movie, how does that sound to you?" " Dinner and a movie sound really good. You lead and I will follow." Here in Lake Charles, Loisiana not that many things to do like you would in a big town. We are just Cajun folk. We choose the movie 2012, because I have been dying to see it. But first we settle on great Cajun food at a restaurant known as Hebert's. Before that we make a quick trip to my apartment so I can put my roses in water. We arrive at the restaurant and lead to a table by the hostess. Then we are greeted by the waiter. I order catfish and Dillion orders gumbo. Waiting on the food, we have a couple of beers as we talk. Dillion says," Have you thought since we meet that maybe it was pre-ordained? I think you are one of the most beautiful women I have ever seen, since we bumped into each other you have been the only thing on my mind. I feel privileged just to be in your presence." I look at Dillion feeling my face blush I say," Thank you for your kind words, you so flatter me. You could be right because since I met you I can't think of any thing else but you. There is definitely some kind of chemistry here wouldn't you say? I am always on guard because I have been hurt before, but with you I haven't even thought of this and don't really care. I just couldn't wait to see you again." " I must say I feel exactly the same way. I want to get to know you, do things with you and I hope this won't be our only date. You just leave me breathless." " I want to see you again also. You know I have lived in Louisiana a couple of years now and I have never been sight seeing. I have always had an interest in the supernatural and two places I wanted to see here is Magnolia Plantation and the Myrtles Plantation. The stories behind these places just fascinate me." " Well, we have something in common, an interest in the supernatural. I visited Magnolia Plantation once, all the voodoo practiced there, to think of it just gives me goose bumps. So if we agree to see each other this is something you would like to do? Soon our food arrives and we continue talking through out the meal, I love getting to know someone on this level. After we finish our meal we go to see 2012, after that Dillion drives me to my apartment, after arriving Dillion says," I was having such a good time, I hate for the night to end. Do you want me to walk you to your door?" " No, I will be fine but thank you for asking. I hate for the night to end also, so would you like to come in for a while?" " Are you sure it will be alright? I would love to come in." After we both reach the door, we walk in, the first thing I do is put on some music, then go to the kitchen to get a couple of beers. Dillion walks around the living room looking at pictures and things. Arriving back in the I hand Dillion his beer, but he puts it on the table, lightly grabbing me around the waist and starts dancing with me. This totally surprise me. I am totally swept off my feet. Then before I realize it we are sharing a very passionate kiss. Then he picks me up in his arms, us staring each other romantically in the eyes, and he heads toward the bedroom. I usually don't sleep with some one on the first date, but this I just couldn't help myself. We end up making wild passionate love all night. The next morning we wake up and after breakfast we decide to drive to and tour Magnolia Plantation, the plantation steeped in voodoo. After arriving here the feeling one gets , well there are no words for the depressive feeling one has. Dillion walks around like he is in a trance like he notices everything here. After that first date we become quite the the item. We are always together and do everything together. Dillion sends me yellow roses every week, to show his feelings for me and he knows these are my favorite flowers. After a couple of weeks things start to change as Dillion starts spending more time with himself and then claiming him not remembering where he was or what he was doing. But I love him and I trust him. One night we stayed together we get up the next morning and in the local paper is a story about a horrific murder. " It says here they think this murder was some how connected to voodoo because they found a mojo bag. The murder they think was some sort of sacrifice to the Gods. The mojo bag was made of red flannel which signifies love. They say the victim was a young male around the age of twenty. Now that will send chills up your spine. Now we have a killer that worships voodoo Gods. How appropriate." Dillion says, " It is probably just some nut after their fifteen minutes of fame. I don't think you have anything to worry about. Why worry? You will be safe as long as you are with me." Two weeks pass with no more incidents, until one day another murder reported in the paper with the same M.O. Dillion says," Are you still worried about this psycho? I can tell from the look on your face after reading the paper. No need to worry my darling. " I guess you are right but I would think any woman that lives alone would be sort of alarmed, don't you?" " I tell you what to ease your nerves why don't you come stay with me until they apprehend this nut. I promise you will be safe." " Perhaps you are right. I will stay with you for a while." Time passes about three months now and I am still staying with Dillion. This thing really scares me. We both go to work, go out sometime together, but there are times Dillion just disappears for hours and he has no explanation. One day I'm cleaning the apartment and there is a knock at the door. Upon answering it, it is the police wanting to speak with Dillion. I ask," Why do you want to see him? Has he done something?" The police say," We want to speak with Dilllion because we think he is involved in something." "Involved in what? He is with me most of the time." " All we can tell you is that we think he may be involved with the voodoo murders, I'm sure you have heard of. The mojo bags being red flannel, doesn't Dillion's work have something to do with red flannel?" It all starts to make sense now, the red flannel, the times he disappears with no memory, Then this thought just overwhelms my mind and my next moment I am aware of, I wake up here in this mental ward. According to the doctors here, Dillion was made up, just something in my mind. I was lonely so Dillion was a fabrication. The murders were real enough though and they bothered me so much I fit them in to my illustration. So they say I can't distinguish between reality and imagination. I see it is almost time for me to see the doctor again but first I hear a knock on my room door. I say," Come in." In comes an orderly carrying a bunch of yellow roses.

Forum topic or inble on a "story" written to illustrate Asperger's

I am looking for the post, forum topic, or Instructable, about a story to illustrate how Asperger's feels like; the illustration was for NTs, and was about a "crash landing, on a planet, where the language spoken was close enough to understand much of the time, but a lot of times things didn't "make sense".  The story may NOT have been about asperger's exclusively, but more about problems in communication. My reason is, I came across this episode of ARTHER and in part of the story, a very similar story line is used. I am not accusing anyone of anything, but wanted to let all parties know of this in case it was borrowed from the original writer for use in the show.

Make Ideas Real: Share your SketchUp Story

Today, the SketchUp team is launching a new project called Make Ideas Real. The purpose of this project is to showcase work from SketchUp users who (in some way) have made their models into something real. SInce so many of you are already discussing and sharing your projects here, I wanted to reach out and introduce the project to the Instructables community specifically. We think SketchUp users do amazing work, and that sometimes this work gets lost in the 3D Warehouse. If you're particularly proud of a model that you've turned into reality (using SketchUp somewhere in your workflow), we hope you'll share the project and the story with us here. And please, we also want to hear about the role that Instructables played in your project! Our plan is to collect the most compelling stories and feature them in a special showcase, so that people who are new to SketchUp can be inspired by the work of others. If you have any questions, I hope you'll respond to this post and let me know! Mark Google SketchUp, Community Manager

Zombie fiction: illegal in Kentucky.

A Kentucky student has been arrested under anti-terrorist legislationWinchester police say William Poole, 18, was taken into custody Tuesday morning. Investigators say they discovered materials at Poole's home that outline possible acts of violence aimed at students, teachers, and police.Poole told LEX 18 that the whole incident is a big misunderstanding. He claims that what his grandparents found in his journal and turned into police was a short story he wrote for English class."My story is based on fiction," said Poole, who faces a second-degree felony terrorist threatening charge. "It's a fake story. I made it up. I've been working on one of my short stories, (and) the short story they found was about zombies. Yes, it did say a high school. It was about a high school over ran by zombies."I originally found this story through Groxx. The article is here, and if you want to pass comments on to the relevant people, their contact details are here.

I vaguely remeber an interesting story about a town in Wisconsin...

I was surfing the web today and I can't remeber what it was, but something reminded me of this story I heard somewhere:  A small town in Wisconsin or somewhere else nearby simply disappeared for several hours.  Everyone and everything.  Then it reappeared and nobody knew the difference.   Can anyone tell me where this story might have come from or explain it further?  P.S.  I'm placing this in "Technology" because that's where all of the awesome fringe science is

Laugh a Little

Greetings!      Where I use to live my local paper posted some funny stories or or sayings titled "Laugh a Little" hence the name. I decide to post some of them to see what you think. None of these are ones that I made up, they're all from the paper. If you want me to post more I will. I have lots of them.      Enjoy.                                Questions that haunt me! Can you cry underwater? How important does a person have to be before they are considered assassinated instead of just murdered? Why does a round pizza come in a square box? What disease did cured ham actually have? How is it that we put  man on the moon before we figured out how to put wheels on luggage? Why is it that people say they 'slept like a baby' when babies wake up every to hours? If a death person has to go to court, is it still called a hearing? Why do people pay to go up in tall buildings and pay to look through binoculars at things on the ground? If the professor on Gilligan's Island can make a coconut radio, why can't he fix a hole in a boat? If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?                                 Church Bloopers  The fasting and prayer conference includes meals. The sermon this morning 'Jesus walks on water.' The sermon tonight: 'Searching for Jesus.' Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husband. Don't let worry kill you off - let the church help. Remember in prayer the many who are sick of our community.  A bean supper will be held on Tuesday evening in the church hall. Music will follow.
